Which Greek island to visit with kids?

Hi there

I hope you're starting this new year with your head full of travel memories or plans!!

I’d love to spend a week in July on a Greek island with my 8-year-old son. I’m totally in love with Amorgos, but not all the beaches are accessible for him. I’ve been to Santorini and Naxos before and don’t want to go back. Would you have an island to recommend that’s not too crowded 😕, with a few accessible beaches and where we won’t have to fight to get around or park?

Have a great day Christelle

Hi Christelle,

Finding a Greek island in the summer that isn’t too crowded is a bit tricky! Paros and Tinos have lovely accessible beaches, but getting around can be tough in peak season. Other options are Sifnos and Milos, but again, transportation isn’t always easy.

Happy planning! Elenitsa

Hi and thanks Elenitsa for your feedback. Yes, I know the islands are popular. What about Syros and Rhodes?

Thank youuuuu Christelle

Syros isn’t very "Cycladic." It’s popular with families, so it could be a good option. Rhodes tends to have all-inclusive hotels and cruise ships. But it’s a big island, so you can always find quieter spots.

Hi there,

Serifos Island is lovely with its sandy beaches. Depending on where you stay, you can easily walk to them without any issues.

Hello,

Serifos and Livadakia Beach.

Paros and the coastal area from Piso Livadi to Drios (north to south). As well as Aliki at the very south.

All these spots are "kids-friendly," as they say across the Channel.

They have more or less developed dirt areas, some closer than others, serving as parking lots.

Hi there

Thank you sooo much for all your suggestions! I’ll check them out. It’s true there are so many islands to choose from. I really fell in love with Amorgos, but the beaches aren’t necessarily kid-friendly except for Kalotaritissa.

Have a great day! Best,

If it's about shallow waters and gentle waves, Aliki in Paros and Livadakia in Serifos are, in my opinion, perfect choices (and there are ice cream vendors too) 🙂

In Serifos, further west and a bit off the beaten path, you’ll also find Vagia, Koutalas, and Ganema—three sandy beaches that are pretty well sheltered in this bay:

In Paros, Piso Livadi is also relatively sheltered with shallow waters. Further south toward Golden Beach, it can get a bit rough with waves depending on the wind. You’ll find pedal boat rentals, diving clubs, windsurfing, and other activities ending in "surf." Golden Beach is about 1.5 km of sandy shoreline, with lifeguarded sections.

That said, Paros in July is especially crowded.

For calmer options, check out the south of Sifnos with Platis Gialos, Faros, and Vathi. In the north, Kamares port also has a quiet beach, but I’m not a fan of Kamares’ vibe.

Hi Christelle,

Even though I haven’t tried it (too cold for me in early June 😏), Aegiali Beach on Amorgos seemed pretty kid-friendly to me.

(The photo is taken at the very end of the beach.) Happy thinking!

Hi Muriel

Yes, that beach is indeed well-equipped, but it’s almost the only one on the island, and the water gets deep pretty quickly. Amorgos is a gorgeous island!! I’m still looking into the question with the previous messages. I’m not ruling out going back for a third time, though.

Have a great week! Best, Christelle

There are a few islands I have in mind that we visited as a family and the kids really loved. I remember they adored the beaches in Rhodes and Naxos (we went at different times). There are also some great blogs I used to find kid-friendly spots, like this one, here and here. Amorgos is beautiful but I agree, the beaches aren’t really suitable for kids... Hope this helps and have a great time! :)

Hi there

Thank you so much for your feedback! After looking into flights and ferry connections, I’ve decided on Tinos. I’ve booked everything there. Fingers crossed this island charms us. Amorgos remains my absolute favorite.

Have a great weekend Best regards

Tinos is a great choice, but when it comes to beaches that are good for kids, it’s not the best option.

You’ll get there faster if you leave from the port of Rafina, which is 20 minutes from the airport.

A car is essential in Tinos if you want to explore the island and see its many villages.

Hi there,

Thanks for your feedback. Yes, we rented a car—it’s a must. Oh, okay... good to know about the beaches. It’ll still be better than Amorgos, I think.

Thanks, and have a great weekend! Christelle

I made a little video of Tinos (trip in June) with some beach clips, even though it wasn’t our main activity.

It’s HERE

In particular, the ones at Panormos (in the north), Giannaki, and Agios Fokas
