Where to stay in the Cinque Terre?

Hi everyone,

We're heading to Genoa and the Cinque Terre in mid-October for a full week. We're planning to spend two and a half days—three nights—in the Cinque Terre. The idea is to hike between the villages and use the train (or boat) for the trip out (or back). We're thinking of staying overnight, and I was wondering which village to prioritize.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

I don’t think it makes much difference in terms of feasibility.

Here’s an idea: Pick the hikes you want to do and write them down. Count how many times a village is a starting or ending point. Choose the village with the highest score. This works well if you’re taking the train (moving between villages isn’t scenic—just tunnels). It might not be ideal if you’re set on specific boat routes (for the views). In that case, treat those specific routes like hikes and pick the village with the highest score. You’ll probably want to stay at the "hub" of your activities.

Hi there,

All the villages have charm, but the most photogenic (and visited) are Vernazza and Manarola. They’re also the most expensive... and price might just be what guides your accommodation choice. We stayed in Riomaggiore at the end of October, and it was a great compromise: a quiet room with a sea view, not far from the center.

For hikes, it’s easy to plan by juggling the frequent trains, boats, and starting points for the trails. The weather can also influence your choice of activities. At the end of October, we had a full day of rain—some trails were closed, and boats were canceled that day. And even at the end of October, it was still pretty crowded! As always, the early bird catches the worm! 😛

Genoa, which we visited for an afternoon and evening—just enough time to soak in the atmosphere—really won us over!

Happy planning.

Hi,

We don’t know how you’re traveling to get to Genoa, then the Cinque Terre, and back???

So after visiting Genoa, I’d go for LEVANTO—it’s a pretty little "town" (cheaper) and has both the train and boat!

From there, you can visit the five villages at a pace of 2 or 3 per day, with or without hikes.

Option to add Portovenere, which is really nice (a bit south).

Option to visit Santa Margherita Ligure + Portofino (between Genoa and Levanto):

Take a good look at each page, and have a great trip!

Let me know if you need anything.

Check the sunset times because the sun sets much earlier in the South AND in October...
