Bonjour à tous (c'est mon premier post même si je lis depuis un moment 😊)
Je me permets de solliciter votre aide pour des conseils pour un 1er autotour.
Avec mon mari, nous arriverons à SF le 16 août (soir) et repartirons le 30 (matin). Le nombre de jour est hélas assez restreint mais nous souhaiterions voir un maximum de choses.
Le souci : seul mon mari conduit mais jamais encore à l'étranger, nous sommes un peu inquiets 🏴☠️
Auriez vous quelques conseils pour la location ? (nous craignons vraiment les déplacement dans les grandes villes). Auriez surtout une compagnie à recommander ? – sans franchise si possible (ou avec rachat de) ?
Voici ce que nous aimerions faire : - 2 jours à SF - que Universal Studio à LA - une demi journée pour faire du snorkelling (on souhaitait s’arrêter aux Channels Island mais par manque de temps nous pensons en faire uniquement à Monterey) - Lac Powell avec un tour en bateau 2/3 h - Monument Valley – une nuit à LV- Grand Canyon et Bryce Canyon mais sans forcément y rester longtemps et faire de longues randonnées (nous ne sommes pas très sportifs, de courtes marches nous conviennet parfaitement).
Voici donc ce que j’ai imaginé :
J1 SF
J2 SF (louer voiture à l’aéroport) --> Monterey (snorkeling, aquarium...)
J3 Monterey, Bis Sur --> nuit à LA
J4 LA (Universal Studio)
J5 trajet LA --> LV
J6 de LV trajet jusqu’au Grand Canyon am et nuit sur place
J7 matinée au Grand Canyon puis trajet et nuit jusqu’à Monument Valley
J8 matin Monument Valley puis trajet et nuit à Page (ou au Lac Powell)
J9 Lac Powell (bateau) et nuit sur place
J10 trajet jusqu’à Bryce et journée et nuit sur place
J11 Bryce le matin puis trajet jusqu’à Yosemite (petite pause à )
J12 Yosemite visite journée puis le soir retour à SF (rendre voiture)
J13 SF
OU
J7 matinée Grand Canyon trajet Monument Valey puis nuit à Page
J8 --> J10 à la place de J9--> J11
J11 et 12 : 2 jours à Yosemite
Qu’en pensez vous ? Y voyez vous des incohérences.... ?
Nous nous demandons également à combien cela peut il bien revenir (location voiture + essence sans compter les hôtels)
Par ailleurs pensez vous que nous devons réserver les hôtels à l’avance depuis la France ? Auriez vous quelques hôtels à conseiller pour les parcs ?

Pour le circuit, pourquoi une boucle autour de San Francisco? Pourquoi pas une arrivée à San Francisco et un départ de Las Vegas par exemple? C'est pas plus cher.
Là c'est hyper chargé et comme journée emblématique je retiens celle-ci 😛: J11 Bryce le matin puis trajet jusqu’à Yosemite (petite pause à..). Si je prends Google Maps et que je tape un trajet de Tropic à Lee Vining (donc avant l'entrée de Yosemite), ça me donne 807km en 8h47. Cool! Ce sont des vacances! 😎. Avec une petite demi-journée si vous êtes pas vannés pour Profiter de Yosemite qui est un parc assez grand tout de même (comme un département français...).
Bref revoyez votre point de retour, autre que SF, là ce n'est pas tenable en 13 jours!

Merci pour votre réponse. Les billets d'avion sont déjà achetés (nous avons trouvé les AR à 670 euros TTC par personne, c'était le moins cher et en partant d'une autre ville cela revenait plus cher) et l'aller et le retour se font de SF donc on ne peut rien changer. De plus, comme toute la "boucle" nous interesse (LA, LV et les parcs, Monterey..) on ne voyait pas trop le problème.
En effet 807 km ca ne va pas du tout !!! merci pour cette précision je ne me rendais pas compte.
670€ TTC c'est très peu cher, en effet. Mais il faut voir aussi le carburant que vous allez dépenser en faisant des kilomètres supplémentaires pour revenir à votre point de départ, et surtout le confort de circuit et la qualité que vous perdez. Autant mettre 100€ de plus dans le billet d'avion! Mais ce qui est fait est fait, on ne peut pas changer.
De plus, vous ne voulez rien abandonner apparemment donc dur dur de vous proposer quelque chose 🤪...
Peut-être arrêtez votre circuit en voiture à Vegas (San Francisco - Côte - Los Angeles - Grand Canyon - Monument Valley - Bryce - Vegas) et de là prendre un vol intérieur qui vous ramènera à San Francisco pour redécoller vers la France. Cela permettrait de consacrer plus de temps à la partie parcs en Utah/Arizona et de ne pas faire en voiture la route Vegas - Yosemite - San Francisco. Bien sûr vous perdez Yosemite, mais pourrez-vous réellement en profiter?
.. et dans tous les cas on envisageait une journée complète à Yosemite (J12)
Non, pas vraiment... Le j11 vous dormirez dans le parc? Sinon Lee Vining est au plus près mais déjà éloigné. Et ensuite vous souhaitez faire la route jusqu'à San Francisco, donc ça ne fait pas une journée entière consacrée au parc de Yosemite. Vous n'aurez juste le temps que de le traverser. Aurez vous le temps d'aller jusqu'à Glacier Point ou à la forêt de sequoias de Mariposa? J'en doute. Attention, ce parc est très fréquenté, de plus la vitesse est très limitée dans la plupart des parcs nationaux!

Oui c'est vrai j'imagine donc qu'il y a moyen chez certains loueurs de voiture de rendre celle ci à LV en l'ayant prise à SF et que les billets d'avion sont abordables. Pourquoi pas... Sinon je crois aussi qu'il y a des tours depuis SF en bus à la journée pour Yosemite (type gotobus) que l'on pourrait faire en tout début de séjour même si hélas cela doit faire beaucoup de km pour peu de temps sur place

Oui tu peux faire LA - Grand Canyon direct. Et Vegas entre Bryce et Yosemite. Mais le trajet Vegas - Yosemite en passant par Death Valley sera quand même très important!
Sinon, bien sûr que tu peux rendre ton véhicule dans une autre ville où tu l'as loué. En général entre la Californie et Vegas tu n'as pas de frais de drop off... En tout cas c'était comme ça l'année dernière, mais les temps changent... 😕
Pour la visite organisée de Yosemite à partir de San Francisco, je sais pas j'ai pas testé, mais à mon avis c'est un peu du style la visite du Grand Canyon à partir de Vegas. Très peu ma tasse de thé ces visites organisées 🤪 sans avoir de liberté de mouvement et en étant minuté en permanence...

Qu’en pensez vous ? Y voyez vous des incohérences....?
ITAT t'en a déjà beaucoup dit.... mais j'en rajoute :
- Quand visites-tu San Francisco ? avec une arrivée le soir (minimum 12-13h de vol à ton tarif... plus 9 heures de décalage horaire...) qu'espères tu voir le 16/8 ? le motel ? Vu que tu le loues la voiture le lendemain-si je comprends bien- tu seras donc logée pas loin de l'aéroport !
- J2 sortir de ville, s'habituer à la voiture automatique, arriver à Monterey = la matinée. L'aquarium mérite au minimum 2-3 heures de visite. Quant au "snorkeling", je ne sais pas si tu as l'habitude de te "prélasser" dans une eau à 16°.... sinon, tu peux l'oublier ! le Pacifique n'est "baignable" en plein été qu'au sud de L.A ou San Diego😠
- J4 L.A : même si je suis loin d'être un adepte de L.A, je trouve que n'y consacrer qu'un jour, et à Universal de surcroît, relève du gâchis !😛
- J5-6 : passer juste une nuit à LV ?? même ceux qui détestent.. y ont consacré au moins 1 jour !!
- J8 : 2 nuits au Lake Powell sans mentionner Antelope Canyon ??
- J11 : le comble est atteint, comme te l'a dit ITAT ! C'est infaisable !
Pour le trajet Yosemite=> SFO, compte plutôt 1/2 journée... car pas trop de routes directes ni autoroute !
Location de voiture : il faut absolument la louer depuis la France, soit sur les sites des loueurs, genre Hertz, Avis, National, ou bien auprès d'un courtier du genre locationdevoiture.fr (N° vert sur le site) ou Autoescape.com qui , en général, ont des devis moins chers, et qui incluent les suppléments indispensables d'assurances (CDW et LIS pour l'essentiel). Aux USA, il n'y a pas de franchise sur les CDW (dommages au véhicule).
Logement : en fin août, la réservation d'avance peut être superflue, sauf pour la 1ere et la dernière nuit, et dans, ou à proximité des parcs tels que Grand Canyon, Bryce ou Yosemite en fin de semaine particulièrement.
Maintenant, tu pourras remarquer que la réservation directement sur le site des motels de chaine (genre motel6.com, super8.com etc) te permet d'avoir des tarifs spéciaux que l'on ne te donnera pas au comptoir !
Par ailleurs, en réservant par le Net, tu ne paies rien tant que tu n'y es pas arrivée... et c'est annulable jusque le matin même dans certains cas !
Carburant : environ la moitié de la France 😎😎😎😎. Compte environ 9L/100km selon la voiture louée... mais faut voir grand 😛 Petite voiture (genre "compact") est égal à inconfort total !
Si vous ne réussissez jamais rien du premier coup, n'essayez pas le parachutisme !

Juste une petite question je n'ai pas bien compris lorsque la voiture est louée aux EU (depuis la France ou sur place d'ailleurs ?) si il y a un souci mais qu'on est assuré il n'y a AUCUNE franchise à payer ??? C'est incroyable (et parfait !!!). En principe pour les hotels je passe par Booking car c'est annulable jusqu'à la veille mais je vais me renseigner pour les sites directs des hôtels si c'est vrai qu'on peut annuler jusqu'au jour même. J'ai beaucoup voyager mais jamais aux EU (Europe et Australie surtout et là inenvisageable annuler jour même en ayant réserver sur le site de l'hotel) donc à voir en effet
Le J2 et le dernier jour sont (d'après mon planning mais qui va donc devoir être modifié) les 2 jours pleins prévus pour SF. La voiture ne serait louée que le jour 3 et rendue l'avant veille du départ

C'est peut-être bien ça le problème! 🤪 Les gens qui font ce genre de voyage aux USA sont enfermés dans le bus toute la journée et n'en sortent que pour la pause pipi ou pour un bref arrêt photo!
Attention de ne pas lire et interpréter à l'européenne une carte routière US ! Sur le rand mc nally les distances sont marquées en temps. Les excès de vitesse sont en g��néral à proscrire, la police est assez efficace et souvent intransigeante même si les indulgences sont toujours possibles.
San Francisco mérite minimum trois jours pleins sans parler de la baie ! Monterey Carmel ça vaut le coup ! Grand Canyon prévoir la journée complète tout comme Bryce Canyon ! Las Vegas deux jours pleins minimum. Lac Powell je zapperai (j'ai pas trouvé ça super) ! Yosemite est pas mal bien sûr mais rien à voir avec Bryce, Monument Valley ou Grand Canyon.
Par contre si votre budget le permet, le tour en hélico peut vous faire découvrir Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam etc ... Las Vegas est le lieu de départ principal. Mon avis 15 jours ça fait court, vous allez être crevé et vous souvenir surtout des trajets sans parler du stress ! Vaut mieux en voir un peu moins quitte à revenir une autre fois !
pour la location, en général elle est moins chère en réservant de France chez les grands loueurs. Maintenant localement vous trouverez des petites agences qui louent des véhicules des fois un peu plus âgés mais à des tarifs moins chers. Par contre ils sont souvent situés dans des banlieues etc ... et bien sûr n'ont pas toujours une bonne réputation (du moins pas la notoriété des grands loueurs (hertz , Alamo , dollar , rent a car..)

J11 Bryce le matin puis trajet vers LV (en passant sans s'arrêter vraiment par ZIon) nuit à LV
J12 journée et nuit à LV
J13 départ en avion tôt pour SF puis journée et nuit à SF

Monument Valley s'apprécie surtout au coucher du soleil. Partir à 17h du Grand Canyon pour MV, c'est beaucoup trop tard... surtout si vous investissez dans le The View ! 😉

Pareil que Virginath! Il faut à tout prix être à Monument Valley à 17h, donc partir de Grand Canyon vers 14h. Le coucher de soleil est sublime et le circuit en voiture dans le parc est plus joli en fin d'après-midi.
Antelope s'apprécie surtout entre 11h et 13h lorsque les rayons de soleil pénètrent dans le canyon, donc partir de Monument Valley assez tôt ou reporter Antelope au lendemain matin!
Partir de MV tôt ca peut le faire ou sinon on échange : si on arrive trop tard : Lac Powell l'après midi et Antelope le lendemain matin.
Par contre s'il faut repartir plus tôt de Grand Canyon, peut être on aurait intérêt à ne pas dormir à LA le 2e soir (J6) mais avancer sur le chemin (2/3 h de route) jusqu'à... ??
Pour le snorkelling oui c'est bien réputé et on adore ça mais il faudrait réduire à 2/3 h le pense pour que tout tienne.. pas facile quand même !

Et oui, c'est à regret, mais tu as bien fait, ton circuit est beaucoup plus tenable maintenant.
Comme on te l'a dit arrive à MV vers 17h, donc oui si tu as le courage de faire qq heures de route apres Universal studio, cela vaut le coup, cela te permettra d'avoir deja une vue et un coucher de soleil sur GC.
Si tu arrives à pousser jusqu'à Barstow, cela te fait plus que 6h de route le lendemain, donc un bon moment sur GC. Par contre essaye de ne pas partir trop tard de LA car si Barstow n'est en theorie qu'à 2h de route, il faut compter avec les embouteillages.

J'ai un peu de difficultés à trouver des renseignements précis là dessus et comme le temps va nous être compté... Etiez vous par exemple passé par une agence locale pour sortir en mer et laquelle ?

Classic itinerary: arrival in Calgary, Banff, Jasper, Clearwater, Whistler, Vancouver Island, departure from Vancouver.
I know you can’t see into the future any better than I can, so I’m obviously not asking what the wildfire situation will be like in a month...
But if any of you could let me know if, CURRENTLY, there are major difficulties—not just for locals, of course, but for tourists as well?
We’re hesitating between taking the chance or canceling what we still can.
We’re not young anymore and don’t have the flexibility we once did...

And through it all – the road, the road, and more road!!!
We’ll adapt day by day based on our mental and physical state (we’re not exactly spring chickens).

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

After years of hoping, waiting, planning, then changing, saving, and searching for the best possible route... we're FINALLY off this summer for a 5-week road trip in the West.
I had planned a trip to Colorado in 2021 but canceled due to COVID, so with time passing and my eldest’s high school graduation approaching fast, I figured it was now or never!
Anyway, the itinerary has been modified and extended to please everyone (I’m no longer the only one making decisions!!)
Here’s our final route:

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

My 16-year-old son is flying to Grand Rapids with other kids his age. There’s a layover in Detroit. There’s no unaccompanied minor service available. Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?
Are there any other must-see spots or things we shouldn’t miss?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
