Nous partons du 16 au 25 décembre rejoindre notre fils étudiant à Long Beach et souhaiterions profiter de ces 10 jours pour faire un circuit voiture au départ de LA .
Quel parcours nous conseilleriez vous , en rapport aux contraintes météo de cette période.
Pourrions nous envisager un circuit vers quelques parcs de la région tels Grand Canyon via LasVegas, Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon, Death Valley...)

Avant toutes choses, combien de temps disposez-vous pour faire votre circuit?
Il me semble que vous avez, en comptant bien que vous avez 9 ou 10 jours entiers?
Pensez-vous les consacrer tous a votre parcours?
dans les Parks, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Monument Valley il fera deja bien froid et les possibilites d'avoir de la neige sont importantes🤪
Peut-etre en si peu de temps, un petit voyage vers San Francisco et une visite a Yosemite NP serait pas une mauvaise option😎
Si cette option vous interesse je vous donnerai des infos pour visiter notre ville.
Mais votre premiere idee est faisable si vous y consacrez au moins 8 jours.

En 10 jours, c'est tout à fait possible de faire un circuit avec les différents sites cités,
si LA n'est pas inclue dans les 10 j.
Tracez le parcours sur google map, vous verrez les trajets des différentes étapes

Mis à part le froid et la neige que vous risquez de rencontrer, les parcs nationaux que tu cites peuvent effectivement se visiter en hiver.

J3: Las Vegas
J4: LV - Zion

J'avais effectivement , dans un 1er temps penser à rester sur la côte, mais l'urbanisation ne nous intéresse peu, et j'imagine que la lumière d'hiver et le peu de touristes au mois de décembre incite peut être à voir ces parcs d'une toute autre maniere qu'en été.
Qu'en pensez vous ?
Autre chose: mes connaissances en anglais se résument à un anglais scolaire, non pratiqué depuis... Est ce suffisant ?

Merci pour votre réponse. J'ai suivi vos conseils et visualisé le parcours sur Google Map.
Les étapes ne dépassent guère 400km sauf la dernière de 467 km entre Death Valley et LA.
Dans ma réponse à Durandale2, j'ai listé le circuit envisagé, mais je souhaiterai néanmoins rester deux nuits à LA.

Comme je l'ai dit précédemment aux personnes qui m'ont répondu, je souhaiterai rester deux nuit à LA, si possible...
Votre circuit est intéressant et je vais l'étudier ce week end , même si il me semble trop important par rapport au nombres de jours sur place. Nous atterrissons le 16 en début d'après midi. Le depart en voiture ne pourrait avoir lieu que le 17.
Le vol retour est le 25 à 15h50.
Je reste ouvert à toute proposition, car à part les guides traditionnels, je n'ai aucune notion " d' Amérique de l'ouest "

C'est bien ce que je pensais, votre circuit, ce n'est pas 10 jours, mais 6 !!!
C'est trop court pour le faire correctement,
car au temps de route il faut ajouter le temps de visite.
De plus il ne faut pas passer 2 fois à Las Vegas.
Le mieux serait sans doute de consacrer une journée pour rejoindre directement le Grand Canyon, ou une étape très proche, et faire la visite du GC le lendemain, uniquement la partie en voiture, puis de rejoindre Monument Valley pour le soir.

1) LV ou Vallée de la mort-LA est très faisable en une journée
2) Entre LV+LA et les parcs , il faudra choisir . Les parcs qui sont au-dessus du lot : Grand Canyon Monument Valley Bryce le survol de Page+Powell .
3) Soyez équipés contre le froid , surtout s'il y a du vent

Oui il y a moyen de faire votre parcours sans passer deux fois a Vegas.
Mais helas je vois que le nombre de jours consacres a vos visites a bien diminue😕
Si vous faites le parcours que vous m'avez soumis vous allez passer votre temps a conduire. Vous serez en hiver, les periodes de jour sont assez courtes, et pour peu que vous ayez du mauvais temps cela sera difficile.
Alors je supprimerai Monument Valley, qui est le plus eloigne.
1-Los Angeles/Williams et c'est un long parcours pour une journee d'hiver, le plus raisonnable serait de faire arret a Kingman, entre Kingman et Williams vous serez en montagne a pres de 2000 metres🤪 S'il a neige dans les jours precedents attention a la glace sur la route, De plus s'il neige, les chaines sont requises dans certains endroits, si vous n'en n'avez pas vous risquez une amende.😕
Depuis Kingman, vous allez au Grand Canyon, si vous partez assez tot le matin cela vous prendra au moins 3 heures sans faire arret a Williams, et je pense qu'un court arret a Williams est une bonne idee. Visites du Grand Canyon, ballade au bord du Canyon. Nuit au GC.
Matin route vers Bryce Canyon, environ 300 miles, pres de 500 Kms, vous avez le choix de passer par Page ou par Vermilion Cliffs. A cette epoque de l'annee vous aurez environ 10 heures de jour. Le soleil apparaitra vers 7:30 et la nuit viendra vers 5:00 PM. Si vous passez par Page une rapide visite est possible a Horseshoe Bend.
Entre Page et Bryce vous n'avez vraienment que Kanab ou Mt Carmel Junction pour passer la nuit.
Si nuit a Bryce, visite le matin avec possibilite de descendre dans le Canyon, 150 metres de profondeur, assez facile s'il ne gele pas.
Nuit a Bryce si vous le voulez.
Route Bryce Vegas, nuit a Vegas.
Et le jour suivant route vers Los Angeles. en passant par Death Valley.
Vous pouvez voir qu'il serait difficile d'inclure Monument Valley dans ce circuit sans passer votre temps sur les routes.

Il reste néanmoins une journée avant le depart ( le 25 à LA ) en restant pourtant 2 jours à Bryce . Où pourrais je la placer ?
De plus , vos remarques concernant l'état des routes ainsi que la durée d'ensoleillement en cette période de l'année sont pertinantes et , je vous l'avoue, je suis un peu perdu...
Les avis d'autres personnes du forum diffèrent . Nous y serions allés au début du printemps, cette question ne se poserait pas.
Ne devrais je pas rester sur la côte et monter jusqu'à San Francisco et Yosemite comme vous le proposiez dans votre 1ère réponse ?
Je vais me laisser un peu de temps pour digérer tout ça...

Finalement je ne resterai qu'une seule nuit à LA, je vais me plier à la majorité 😉
Conçernant votre circuit, contrairement à Durandale2 , vous incluez Monument Valley, et vous proposez de faire l'étape Grand Canyon-LA en une seule fois. 780 km sur autoroute.
Est ce faisable en tenant compte des distances et contraintes météo indiquées par Durandale2

Comme il vous est suggere par Olivier, l'autre option serait de ne pas passer par Bryce qui vous oblige a faire un long detour (Le seul) depuis le Grand Canyon. Peut etre alors Monument Valley et de trainer un peu en route. Ou encore, vous avex l'option de venir a San Francisco en faisant la visite de Yosemite. Vous pourrez revenir quand le temps sera meilleur pour faire les autres grands Parks.
Monter a Yosemite depuis Los Angeles, Yosemite Park, San Francisco et deux jourd tranquilement en descendant le long de la cote du Pacific.

Conçernant votre circuit, contrairement à Durandale2, vous incluez Monument Valley
Pas exactement 😉 La principale raison pour laquelle j'ai inclus MV dans le circuit que je t'ai proposé c'est parce qu'il fait partie des parcs que vous souhaitez visiter.
Pour parcourir la Valley Drive il faut compter 2-3h. avec les arrêts photos donc si vous arrivez sur place en début d'après-midi c'est possible.
et vous proposez de faire l'étape Grand Canyon-LA en une seule fois. 780 km sur autoroute.

Oui pas de problème pour l'étape Grand Canyon - LA, ça se fait très bien dans la journée.
En ce qui concerne la météo, personne ne pourra te donner la bonne réponse car impossible de prévoir à l'avance le temps qu'il fera.
Bon, je vois que tu commences à avoir quelques doutes à ce propos😉 alors peut-être reconsidérer la proposition d'itinéraire d'Aquilegia incluant l'Arizona du sud.
Je trouve d'ailleurs que c'est une bonne idée car il y a également de beaux paysages à y découvrir.

J'ai choisi ces parcs parce qu'is sont tous a basse ou moyenne altitude, sauf le Grand Canyon. J'ai visite Saguaro NP en janvier et je pouvais faire des randonnees en shorts. La meme chose a Joshua Tree NP et Death Valley NP en novembre. On peut voir une variete de paysages desertiques et profiter des temperatures agreables en decembre.

Tioga Pass est ferme a cause de neige, et normalement restera ferme jusqu'au printemps. Donc on ne peut pas aller directement de Mammoth a Yosemite. Aux montagnes de Californie en hiver, les chaines pour les pneus sont obligatoires.
Comme déjà mentionné, la Tioga Road qui traverse le parc est fermée entre novembre et mai-juin, il vous faudra donc contourner la Sierra Nevada par le sud direction Bakersfield puis Fresno.
Pour avoir le temps de visiter, une 2ème nuit à Yosemite serait nécessaire car il y a au minimum 7h. de route depuis Death Valley.
Il faut penser à inclure les temps de trajet aux journées: Yosemite - SF c'est au moins 4h.30 de route ce qui ne vous laisse donc qu'1 après-midi sur place.... bien trop court, dommage 😕
Puisque ta première idée était de visiter des parcs, je te suggère Valley of Fire (près de Las Vegas) qui vaut vraiment le détour.

Je ne peux que rajouter a ce qui a ete dit.
Impossible de traverser le Park de Yosemite par la Tioga Pass.
Contourner par la Sud prend beaucoup de temps et en Decembre les journees sont courtes.
Remonter depuis Joshua Tree park vers Yosemite Park serait beaucoup plus sage et plus facile et rien que cela vous prendrait deja au moins 8 ou 9 heures de route. Toute la partie d'approche de Yosemite est en montagne. Comme il vous a ete dit, chaines dans la voiture s'il y a de la neige, sinon risques d'amende et de faire demi-tour.
Restez au moins deux jours a San Francisco. Nous devrions etre chez-nous en Decembre et heureux de vous aider dans vos visites.

Classic itinerary: arrival in Calgary, Banff, Jasper, Clearwater, Whistler, Vancouver Island, departure from Vancouver.
I know you can’t see into the future any better than I can, so I’m obviously not asking what the wildfire situation will be like in a month...
But if any of you could let me know if, CURRENTLY, there are major difficulties—not just for locals, of course, but for tourists as well?
We’re hesitating between taking the chance or canceling what we still can.
We’re not young anymore and don’t have the flexibility we once did...

See the Gulf of Mexico/America.
San Antonio and the missions.
Fort Stockton for an overnight stop.

El Paso and White Sands.
Tucson and the Pima Air & Space Museum:
Tombstone, Bisbee.
Phoenix:
Still working on the program.
Sedona:
Round trip around the area via Flagstaff and Williams, or the Grand Canyon (already done) – we’ll decide on the spot.
Albuquerque:
Santa Fe,
Turquoise Trail,
Los Alamos.
Amarillo via Route 66:
Old Route 66 in the city;
Big Texas Ranch Steak 😏.
Dallas:
JFK Museum;
Perot Museum;
West End district.
And through it all – the road, the road, and more road!!!
We’ll adapt day by day based on our mental and physical state (we’re not exactly spring chickens).

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. I had planned a trip to Colorado in 2021 but canceled due to COVID, so with time passing and my eldest’s high school graduation approaching fast, I figured it was now or never!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
