I’m heading to Thailand for the first time in early 2026 and I’m really struggling to pick a neighborhood to stay in Bangkok. Apart from being close to public transport (metro, skytrain, BRT), I’m torn between several areas. I don’t mind using public transport or walking long distances, but if every trip takes 45 minutes or an hour, it’ll quickly become a hassle given our relatively short time there.
We’ll be in Bangkok twice during our trip: first for a “short” 2-night stopover (arriving from France in the mid-afternoon, then leaving the day after next for southern Thailand by plane), and then again for 3 nights before flying back to France (arriving at the airport in the late afternoon, 3 nights there, then departing for France in the late morning).
I’ve seen so many different recommendations that I’m having a hard time deciding. I’ve read that staying near the river is great for sightseeing, and that taking the boat to get around is really pleasant. But I’m worried about being a bit isolated for evening outings (eating at a cheap little restaurant, having a drink—nothing too wild!).
Chinatown is tempting for the food—it looks amazing—and it doesn’t seem too far from the main sights with public transport. But I’ve read that it’s very noisy because it’s super touristy and there’s constant truck traffic. My friend isn’t thrilled about it, especially since another neighborhood interests her because she has a great discount at a hotel near Victory Monument/Phaya Thai (the Pullman hotel). Even though it’s close to public transport, I’ve seen that it’s mostly a shopping district? And even with transport, isn’t it a long trip to visit places like the Grand Palace?
We also had a plan to stay at an ibis near BTS Nana station in the Sukhumvit area, but again, I get the feeling it’s mostly a shopping district?
Anyway, I’d love to hear your thoughts because I’m really torn!
It’s also true that I haven’t really planned our Bangkok stays yet. I’d like to do the “classic” tourist sights like the Grand Palace and eat really well! Someone told me that the big shopping malls also have amazing food 🙂
Our flights are booked, and we’ll arrive in Thailand at the beginning of January.
Originally, we were supposed to spend 14 days there. But after booking the flights and seeing the prices, we’ll now be there for 20 days instead.
Our initial plan was:
2 days in Bangkok
1 day in Ayutthaya
4 days in Chiang Mai
6 days around Krabi
So we have 7 more days to fill. What do you recommend?
An extra day in Bangkok?
Adding more days in the north? If so, where?
Exploring another region, like Kanchanaburi or Cheow Lan Lake?
Traveling north in stages instead of taking the overnight train?
A few extra details about us:
For us, vacation isn’t about relaxation—we love walking, exploring, and packed days don’t bother us. Hiking for hours and doing active things is what makes us happy. That said, we also enjoy visiting villages and towns if they’re worth the detour. In Thailand, we’d like to visit temples too. We’re early risers, so our days tend to be long. 🙂 In short, we like to keep things moving during our trips. 😉
Unfortunately, seeing terraced rice fields isn’t possible in January. I read there are rice fields around Sukhothai. Are they green in January?
In the north, do you recommend Doi Inthanon, Huai Nam Dang, or Doi Chiang Dao National Parks? Which one is the most beautiful and best for January?

2 ème fois pour nous cette année sur la Thailande, l'année derniere nous avons été du côté de la mer Andaman, nous avions visité Phuket, Koh Phi Phi et Krabi! Nous avions trouvé une belle villa avec vue sur mer et nouss avions fait des excursions à la journée autour de Phuket! Nous avions eu la chance d'être tombé sur une agence francaise donc le guide pouvait nous expliquer en Français!
Cette année nous partons en février du coté de Koh Samui et son archipel ! j'ai entendu de tout
Nous voulons louer une villa, connaissez vous des adresses?
Quel quartier nous recommandez vous?
Nous cherchons aussi à faire des excursions sur Koh Samui et les îles aux alentours, nous cherchons une agence de préférence francaise car nous parlons très mal anglais, des excursions avec pas trop de monde, je ne veux pas être entourer de chinois comme a Koh Phi Phi!

Our itinerary is mostly set, and we’ve found quite a few new things to explore, but I’d still love to hear your recommendations for Bangkok.
Just so you know: we love this city, and every time we visit, we spend several days there without ever feeling like we’ve seen it all. So this year, we’re staying for 8 days!
Here’s what we have planned this year:
* Exploring Nonthaburi
* A day trip to Nakhon Pathom (to test out our basic Thai skills 😛)
* Khlong Lat Mayom floating market (we went 10 years ago—it’s probably changed a lot!)
* The Erawan Museum (we visited Muang Boran on our last trip)
* Finally taking the time to check out Wat Phra Sri Maha Mariamman and Wat Yannawa (we’ve planned to go several times but never made it—are they worth a visit?)
This is what we’ve picked so far, but I’d love to hear about the favorite spots and recommendations from travelers who, like us, adore Bangkok.

par rapport à mon guide (routard 2019) il y a des changements :
accès en camion, même avec bagages, jusqu'en haut, arrêt général à environ 700m de l'esplanade. prix 2000.
les camions s'arrêtent à 3/4 de chemin pour laisser sortir les voyageurs souhaitant prendre le téléphérique (il n'est qu'à la dernière portion du chemin) pour le reste du voyage.
Voyage pas très impressionnant si on a déjà fait les Alpes ou Pyrénées :)
Je pars à Bangkok en voyage d'affaire le 2 décembre (la semaine prochaine donc) et mon vol retour est le 9 décembre. A partir du 5 décembre au soir, je n'ai plus rien à faire niveau affaires et j'envisageais donc d'aller visiter une ile Thailandaise pour me prélasser un peu jusqu'au 8 au soir (mon vol retour étant le 9 au matin).
Quel endroit me conseillez vous ? Facile d'accès et rapide depuis Bangkok donc et qui se fait facilement sur 3 jours.

Avec ma compagne, nous organisons un voyage d'environ 20 jours en ThaÏlande. Cuba, fin Février/ début Mars et nous cherchons à définir le "meilleur" parcours en tenant compte des distances, de la durée du voyage et bien sûr de la pertinence des différentes choses à visiter.
Pour le moment nous avons seulement notre aller-retour:
Départ de Paris :J1
Arrivée à Phuket: J2 à 18h20
Départ de Phuket : J19 à 20h20
Arrivée à Paris: J20
Donc nous disposons de 18 jours / 17 nuits sur place.
Après une rapide recherches, nous avons pensé à l'itinéraire suivant :
- Passer 3 nuits à Phuket
- Aller à Koh Lanta le J5 y rester 4 jours
- Aller à de Krabi le J9 y rester 4 jours
- Aller à de Koh Yao Noi le J13 y rester 4 jours
- Retour à de Phuket le J17 y rester 2 nuits, avant de rentrer à Paris
Nous cherchons un séjour accès sur le soleil et la plage. C'est pourquoi, nous avons volontairement "zappé" Bangkok, et le nord de la ThaÏlande que nous avons déjà visité il y a deux ans. Cependant, un minimum de visite culturelle nous déplairait pas.
Nous aimons particulièrement les sorties en mer et le snorkeling, ce qui semble être l'activité principale de ces iles.
Que pensez-vous de ce début d'itinéraire ? Est-ce que les durées, et les enchaînements semblent cohérents ?
Nous sommes volontiers preneurs de toutes informations concernant les activités et sorties à faire sur chaque lieu ainsi que des conseils concernant les déplacements ; ou encore le choix d'une autre île à la place de celles que nous pensons visiter.
Toutes vos remarques seront les bienvenues et nous seront d'une grande aide.

je pense que mon message sera peut être identique à d'autres mais je n'arrive pas à trouver toutes mes réponses alors voilà....
Voici ce que nous aimerions faire de nos deux semaines à 2 en Thaïlande:
Arrivée le 17/04 directement sur Chiang Mai, 3 nuits sur place
Départ le 20/04 de Chiang Mai pour Krabi, 4 nuits sur place
24/04: je me posais la question de partir sur Koh Lanta qui n'est pas loin et facile d’accès depuis Krabi mais on me dit aussi que Koh Tao vaut le détour (nous cherchons une destination plongée). L'idée serait de perdre le moins de temps possible dans les transports mais je me dis que Krabi = Koh Lanta et que Koh tao aurait peut être un paysage/atmosphère différents...ce serait pour 4-5 nuits et 2 jours de plongée.
Nous aimerions ensuite être sur Bangkok à partir du 29/04 pour 2 nuits, notre vol retour étant programmé pour le 01/05.
Pourriez vous me donner vos avis tant sur le planning que sur la destination plongée?

De Phuket nous devrions aller en Australie, mais malheureusement je pense que c est mal parti, si nous annulons nous pensons faire quelques îles en Malaisie avec de belles plages

Mon épouse et moi désirerions trouver un endroit en bord de mer facilement accessible de Bangkok. Nous sommes déjà allés en Thaïlande 5-6 fois, mais jamais en bord de mer. Bien sûr, Pattaya est proscrit. Nous ne recherchons pas particulièrement la plage, mais plutôt des balades. Cela fait 45 ans que je bourlingue, aussi je sais très bien que les endroits hors sentiers battus se font de plus en plus rares, néanmoins, j’espère trouver un endroit paisible et sympa en faisant appel à votre expérience.

Nous partons en Birmanie dans 4 jours. Arrivée prévue à Yangon, nous prevoyons par la suite prendre la route vers le golfe du bengale, plus précisément dans la région de Rakhine (ex Arakan), plus particulièrement Mrauk-u, Ngapali. Une seule incertitude : la sécurité. Peut-être l'un d'entre vous pourrait nous apporter plus d'informations sur la sécurité actuelle et les conditions d'accès dans ce coin. Bonjour, J'ai vu sur le site «Trip Advisor» une excursion à Chiang Rai organisée par « Yada travel Chiang Rai » pour 1000 Baths. Visite du Temple Blanc, Black house, et surtout, Long Neck village qui m'intéresse particulièrement. J'aimerais savoir si cette agence est fiable. Habituellement, je passe par Expédia pour mes excursions, mais ce n'est pas offert sur leur site. Y a-t-il d'autres activités intéressantes à Chiang Rai en novembre. Merci.
After a successful first trip in 2025, with the help of forum members, we’d love to return to this amazing cultural melting pot in 2026 for three weeks (2 adults, 2 kids aged 13 and 16).
We’d like to explore new places in the Northeast: fly into Khon Kaen and explore the region—Loei, Nong Khai, perhaps? A detour to the center to visit Sukhothai would be a great addition.
I’ll admit, planning this itinerary is a bit trickier for me since I’m less familiar with these areas and what they have to offer. The distances also seem longer than our previous transfers (BKK-Kanchanaburi-Kaeng Krachan-Sam Roi Yot...).
Do you have any suggestions or hidden gems to explore in the Northeast and Central regions that keep travel time between stops reasonable (3-4 hours)?

I’m reaching out because we’re planning a trip to Thailand next year (around March/April), and we’d like to visit Chiang Mai and then Krabi, plus a few islands near Krabi.
We’ve been to Thailand before, 10 years ago, and this time, we’d just like to focus on 5 days in Chiang Mai and 10–12 days in the Krabi area.
I’ll admit, I’m really struggling to pick an island near Krabi.
We hated Phi Phi: dirty, noisy, and the food was gross… such a letdown!
Which island would you recommend for snorkeling, nature walks, and beautiful beaches?
Maybe we could also make a stop between Chiang Mai and Krabi—perhaps Sukhothai?
Is it easy to travel between these three cities?

Well, yes, it'll be me, the one, returning to our travel or vacation site about this destination.
A site still imitated, never equaled, and by far.
A country that, when you discover it, charms you. Then comes the time for nostalgia, followed by one or more returns to the Land of Smiles. It's almost inevitable.
It's a real gut punch when you've met and grown fond of locals, only to learn about all the hardships the Covid sequence brought upon them.
Broken careers, shattered hopes, disrupted lives.
Like after the tsunami, life and activity have bounced back, sometimes in different forms.
Many things haven't changed much: the exchange rate, the quality of the food, the politeness and kindness of the Thai people.
As for us, we've lost members of our VF Thailand community along the way, to whom we pay our respects, but we're now happy to reconnect with both old and new faces.
Sometimes in life, it's a chance to start over, forget old worries and squabbles, and be able to exchange thoughts again on one of our favorite topics.
A quick shout-out to Monsieur François Boucher, without whom, as the saying goes, none of this would have been possible. The growing success of VF over the years silences any criticism on that front.
He kept his word on both the maintenance and sustainability of the site.
Finally, he can be congratulated for his courageous stances during this troubled period, which, in hindsight, we must admit he got right.
On a personal note, it did me good to hear voices like his speak up.
Soon, for the Thailand destination and all others, the word Covid will finally stop appearing, and long live the new era!

Confinement oblige, j'essaie d'organiser tranquillement mes vacances de l'année prochaine (et oui faut bien s'occuper!). Nous aimerions faire la Thaïlande car par un gros budget mais envie de rêver. Nous avons prévu de partir 15 jours en mars en arrivant à Bangkok, y rester 2 jours puis faire 1 île et revenir sur Bangkok encore 2 jours. Je précise que nous serons 2 adultes et 1 enfant de 5 ans. J'ai fais beaucoup de recherches et je n'arrive pas à me décider sur une île ! Nous aimerions ne pas être gêné par une musique assourdissante, des plages magnifiques mais aussi faire des visites car pas la peine de faire tout ce voyage si c'est juste pour glandouiller sur la plage... Voyageant avec un enfant l'idéal serait de pas trop galerer afin d'accéder à cette île! Je sais j'en demande beaucoup mais il doit bien y avoir une île qui regroupe la plupart de ces critères !
Du coup je voudrais bien un peu d'aide s'il vous plaît 🤗
Dans deux heures à minuit heure locale, Phuket sera quasi totalement confinée. Plus de sortie possible par la route ni par bateau, sauf exceptions : ambulance, ravitaillement, etc
