I’m planning our trip to Japan from March 21 to April 11, 2026. We’re planning to travel by plane for long distances (Okinawa) and by train for the rest. I’d like to know if renting a car is easy and, most importantly, if driving with road signs written in Japanese isn’t too complicated. For trains, are there any tips to save money?

Nous avons déjà beaucoup voyagé à travers le monde de cette manière mais, nous étions beaucoup plus jeunes et ''ce n'était pas au Japon''. Mes questions sont d'ordres pratiques, à savoir : Le Japon se visite de manière itinérante, donc refaire les bagages tous les deux ou trois jours et prendre le train ou le bus etc, ! Si l'on se trouve à Tokyo par exemple, comment fait 'on ? un taxi , un bus ou autre mais pour se rendre où et à quel endroit ? Il doit y avoir une multitude de gares ou d'arrêts de bus dans cette immense ville ou l'anglais n'est pas courant ? Ne perdons nous pas trop de temps à chercher ce que l'on doit faire et comment le faire ? Est-ce vraiment pratique pour des personnes de 70 ans , même si l'on est en pleine forme… C'est vraiment la chose qui me turlupine, c'est devoir être sur le trottoir sans vraiment être sur de trouver de l'aide et de se perdre . Le Japon, ce n'est pas New-York ou Paris voir même Bangkok, c'est vraiment un endroit des plus dépaysant qui ne ressemble à aucun autre endroit dans le monde. Je voulais ajouter que nous sommes très très visite, nous prenons tout notre temps pour chaque endroit donc les voyages en groupe ne sont pas notre tasse de thé ! Bref ... Après plusieurs jours en Corée du Sud, j'ai pris la décision de partir 3 jours complet à Tokyo sachant que c'est pas loin.

Je voulais savoir si pour les quartiers comme Sinjuku ou Shibuya on pouvait les faire en une demi-journée ou plus la journée ? Car je souhaite faire les deux quartiers ainsi que Asakusa, Akihabara et Odaiba, est-ce jouable ?

Day 5: 11/01/2024: Okawa, Omuta (forge), and Yanagawa for the Yanagawa Hakushu Matsuri. A bit ambitious for a single day?

Day 6: Arita / Owakachiyama / rice fields in the evening: Is it better to go from Fukuoka to Arita by car or train?

Day 7: Sasebo + Kujukushima Pearl + fireworks show Day 8: Karatsu (Yobuko market + cave + cape) + Matsuri Kanchi Day 9: Kashima + garden + Tara Day 10: Higashi Sonogi, overnight in Nagasaki. Is it better to return the car in Arita or Nagasaki? Day 11: Nagasaki Day 12: Nagasaki, overnight in Fukuoka, so departure by train from Nagasaki Day 13: Munakata and Oshima, and in the evening, Hanabi Kama

Day 14: Mount Hiko, Toho, Soeda. Is there a pottery village? With or without hands-on experience?

Nous sommes à finaliser notre voyage Taiwan - Japon en avril 2020 et il nous reste la portion de 5 jours à organiser à Ishigaki.

Nous désirons visiter Ishigaki, Taketomi et Iriomote.

C'est sur la planification que nous avons besoin d'aide:

Devrait-on demeurer toujours à Ishigaki et prendre les traversiers pour visiter les 2 autres îles ? Ou, demeurer 2 ou 3 jours à Ishigaki et réserver pour 1 ou 2 nuits dans les autres îles ? Est-ce facile de louer une auto à Ishigaki ?

Nous sommes un couple et préférons la randonnée et les visites intéressantes aux plages.

Nous allons tout de même planifier 1 ou 2 sorties de plongée en apnée.

Tout autre information est le bienvenue (suggestion d'activités, hébergements et restos intéressants, etc.

I’m reaching out to you because I’m planning our next big trip (Japan is really tempting us for the autumn!) and I have to admit, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed.

My husband and I have always loved traveling, and at 75, we have no intention of stopping... But I find that everything’s getting so complicated. I try to be "modern" by booking online, but as soon as there’s a problem, we hit a wall.

A friend nearly missed her departure last year because of a visa issue that wasn’t explained properly on a website... and no one to call for help, just automated messages.

It makes me a little nervous to be alone in front of a screen so far away, especially since at our age, we like knowing there’s real support if our health takes a turn while we’re there.

Anyway, I’m tired of seeing my file passed from one person to another without ever having the same contact... Do you know of any small, trustworthy agencies or people who still work the "old-fashioned" way and really look after their clients? I love my independence, but I need a real face behind my project.

Ojika: Would one night be enough?

Yakushima: Are two full days (plus two half-days) sufficient?

If we keep the schedule as is, we have one extra day to fit in somewhere—any suggestions?

Avez vous une adresse précise concernant le lieu de départ du BUS (plateforme-rue-station) ? Ainsi que la ligne ? Puis je m'arréter également à Shimoyoshida pour visiter la pagode avec vue sur le Fuji ?

Bonjour. Je suis en train de faire une réservation pour ma première visite au japon en juillet 2019. J'y vais avec ma fille de 16 ans et notre but c'est de découvrir plusieurs villes et régions. Qu'est-ce que vous pensez de l'idée de commencer à Sapporo (il y a de vol direct de Helsinki) et de retourner par Fukuoka (vol direct aussi). Pour nous déplacer on pense avoir des carte JR. Qu'est-ce que vous pensez? Est-ce que je devrai penser d'une autre manière pour un voyage d'une douzaine de jours?

Nous partons au Japon du 16 (arrivée le 17 au matin) au 30 Avril 2020 pour la première fois avec notre fils qui aura 16 ans.

Nous avons prévu de faire : - du 17 au 22 Avril : Tokyo (programme encore à définir) - du 22 au 24 Avril : Péninsule Izu (une nuit sur la côte est, une nuit sur la côte ouest) - du 24 au 29 : Kyoto (programme encore à définir) - du 29 au 30 : Kyoto / Narita pour partir le matin tranquillement en étant sur place

1/ Je suis en train de regarder les hébergements. Pour Tokyo et Kyoto : pas de souci Pour la péninsule d'Izu, nous envisageons d'aller de Tokyo à Atami en train le 22 au matin, puis de louer à Atami une voiture à rendre le 24 Avril. Pour l'instant, les sites de location de voiture ne me permettent pas de faire un réservation aussi lointaine

- Pouvez-vous me confirmer qu'il est possible de louer une voiture à la gare d'Atami ? et de la rendre à la gare d'Atami si on arrive par la route qui longe la côte ouest de la péninsule ?

- Si je pense avoir trouvé un hébergement pour la première nuit Côte Est, je galère beaucoup plus pour la côte ouest. Pouvez-vous m'aider ? ce que je trouve est : soit hors de prix, soit en japonais non traduit et inaccessible pour moi. Avez-vous de bonnes adresses sur la côte ouest à me conseiller pour 3 adultes et un prix aux alentours de 150 € la nuit, (pas en dortoir partagé)

2/ Pour Tokyo, nous avons un ado geek et gamer, qui voudrait trouver "des bons plans" et ne pas aller forcément dans les magasins courus par tous les touristes. où puis-je chercher ce type de "bons plans" ?

Il souhaiterait aussi qu'on accepte qu'il fasse un peu seul son shopping au moins une après-midi : même si je sais que le Japon est assez sûr : est-ce envisageable de laisser un ado seul dans un quartier (délimité bien sûr) de Tokyo ? Sachant que nous habitons dans une grande ville dans laquelle il sait aller seul... Mais Tokyo c'est différent.....la maman que je suis s'inquiète déjà.

3/ Pour le retour, nous pensons faire Kyoto/Narita le 29 Avril am, pour dormir à Narita ou alentours la dernière nuit et partir tranquillement à l'aéroport au matin (notre avion décolle à 12H55)

Je n'ai pas encore trop exploré Hyperdia, qui pour l'instant me paraît un peu obscur (mais je vais m'y mettre :) ) Quel temps moyen mettra-t-on pour faire ce trajet ? évidemment la question du JR Pass se posera, mais je reviendrai vers vous avec de prochaines questions à ce sujet, car j'en aurai évidemment plein !

Hi everyone, I’m Julien! This summer, from late June to late July, I’m planning a one-month solo trip to Japan—my first time! I’d love to hear your thoughts and advice on the itinerary I’ve put together to explore this amazing country.

Here are the routes I’m considering:

**Option 1: More mountain and nature-focused**

Tokyo: 8 nights, with day trips to Nikko and maybe the Izu Peninsula Kawaguchiko (Lake Kawaguchi/Mt. Fuji): 1 night. The place looks stunning, but I’m worried Mt. Fuji might not be visible due to the weather Kyoto: 6–7 nights (including a trip to Nara) Osaka: 1–2 nights, where I’d like to drop off my things to make the Kumano Kodo easier Kumano Kodo: 3 nights—an experience I haven’t seen much elsewhere, but I thought it sounded really interesting Hiroshima: 2 nights Miyajima: 1 night Takayama: 3 days Kanazawa: 3 days (From what I understand, the Osaka–Takayama–Kanazawa–Tokyo route is convenient for transport) Tokyo: 1 night (return)

**Option 2: More varied but a bit vague in parts**

Tokyo: 8 nights Kyoto: 7 nights (+ Nara) Osaka: 2 nights Kobe + Himeji: just passing through—I’m not sure if it’s worth a night Naoshima: 1 night—still pretty unclear for me Takamatsu: 2 nights. An interesting city, but I’m not sure how long to stay Shimanami Kaido: biking from Imabari to Onomichi, then heading to Hiroshima Hiroshima: 2 nights Miyajima: 1 night Kyushu road trip (Aso + onsens + Fukuoka): 5 nights (also pretty vague—I could fly from Fukuoka back to Tokyo) Tokyo: 1 night

**Option 3: More balanced/simplified**

Tokyo: 8 nights Kawaguchiko: 1 night Kyoto: 7 nights (+ Nara) Osaka: 2 nights Koya-san: 1 night Kumano Kodo: 3 nights Takayama: 3 nights Kanazawa: 3 nights Tokyo: 1 night

A few key points: I haven’t made any reservations yet, except for the flight tickets. I know my plans are too packed and will need to be adjusted. I’m specifically looking for advice on which stops to cut or shorten.

This coming October or November, we’re planning our first trip to Japan. The only downside is we’ll only have two weeks off.

For this first visit, I’m thinking of sticking to the Kyoto and Osaka area… saving Tokyo for another trip. Do you think that’s a good choice for a first-time visit?

I’ve put together a little itinerary below to get some feedback from those in the know. I’m only counting the days we’re actually there, not travel days.

Day 1: Kyoto Ginkaku-ji – Philosopher’s Path with stops at a few shrines temples Eikan-dō and Nanzen-ji visit to the Samurai Ninja Museum in the late afternoon

Day 2: Kyoto Fushimi Inari (allow 4 hours for the hike through the park) visit to Sanjūsangen-dō temple Shōseien garden participate in a tea ceremony

Day 3: Kyoto Kiyomizu-dera temple stroll through the historic district up to Kennin-ji temple visit Kennin-ji temple Yasaka-jinja shrine and Gion district in the late afternoon return to the hotel via Pontochō Street

Day 4: Kyoto visit Kinkaku-ji and Nijō Castle visit the Imperial Palace gardens end the day in the shopping streets (Shibkyogoku and Teramachi, among others)

Day 5: Kyoto Arashiyama area Togetsukyo Bridge, walk along the river, visit the Bamboo Forest explore the area up to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji temple

Day 6: Kyoto hike from Kibune to Kurama

Day 7: Kyoto day trip to Nara (full day)

Day 8: stroll around Kyoto before heading to Osaka

Day 9: Osaka Katsuo-ji temple, then head to Minoh Falls and hike back via the Minoh Trail end the day in the Osaka Castle area

Day 10: Osaka Himeji Castle and an afternoon in Osaka

Day 11: Osaka Osaka and return to the airport in the late afternoon for the flight home

Do you think this itinerary is doable? Are some days too relaxed or too packed? I was thinking of adding a trip to Lake Biwa and Uji, but in that case, I’d have to cut some things. Are those places worth dropping some of the planned spots? And if so, which ones would you recommend cutting or shortening?

Hi there, I’m planning a trip to Japan with my three grown-up kids, who aren’t exactly keen on rushing from one place to another with heavy luggage. I’ve tried to balance things so we can see as much as possible while still giving them time to enjoy the evenings. Here’s what I’ve come up with: - Arrival in Tokyo on May 17 - Staying in Tokyo from May 17 to 22, exploring the city, with a day trip to Nikko (round trip in one day): is it worth it, considering it’s a 2-hour train ride each way? - Sending our big suitcases directly to Osaka - Traveling to Kamakura on May 23: 1 night (with small luggage) - Traveling to Hakone on May 24: 1 night (with small luggage) - Heading to Osaka on May 25: staying from May 25 to June 2 in Osaka, where we’ll pick up our big suitcases Day trips from Osaka: - Kyoto: 2 days (round trip in one day) - Nara: 1 day (round trip in one day) My son would prefer to stay in Osaka for all 8 days, but I’m wondering if it’s a good idea to spend at least one night in Kyoto. What do you think? - Leaving for Himeji on June 3: is it possible to leave both big and small luggage in a coin locker to visit the castle, or is it better to do a round trip from Osaka? - Traveling to Hiroshima: 3 nights from June 3 to 5: - Hiroshima: 1 day - Miyajima: 1 day - Okayama and Kurashiki: 1 day: is it better to do a round trip from Hiroshima and return to Tokyo from there, or spend the night of June 5 in Okayama and head to Tokyo from there? - Back to Tokyo from June 6 to 9, with departure on the morning of June 9. For accommodations, we’re leaning toward mid-range hotels with good value rather than apartments. Any great tips? We’ve already been to Japan before, back in 2013 for 15 days in August, visiting the major tourist hubs: Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Himeji, and Ogimachi. This time, we’re taking more time—about a month—with the following points of interest: Start of the trip with a few days in Tokyo Osaka International Exposition on October 11–12, 2025 Jidai Matsuri Festival in KYOTO on October 22, 2025 Karatsu Kunchi Festival from November 2–4 Our goal is to blend into the crowd and make connections in festive atmospheres. Do these stops sound interesting to you? Is it a good idea to stay in a central location between October 10 and 23 to get to the Osaka Expo and the Jidai Matsuri Festival in Kyoto using public transport, and to explore the region in between? Between Kyoto and the KARATSU Festival from October 23 to November 1, we’re thinking of traveling by shinkansen with a stopover for a few days to visit Hiroshima and the surrounding area. I’m currently planning our first trip to Japan. We’ll be traveling with our two teens, aged 16 and 17. We’re doing a pretty classic loop, but I’d still love to hear your valuable input.

Here’s the itinerary we’re considering:

- Tokyo (5 full days) - Fuji Yoshida (1 night) - Matsumoto (1 night) - Kamikochi / Gokayama (1 night) - Kanazawa (1 night) - Ine (1 night) - Himeji - Kyoto (5 full days)

We’re thinking of renting a car for the Japanese Alps portion.

We’re planning a 3-week trip, so I still have a few days to allocate—maybe in the Japanese Alps.

What do you think of the itinerary? The detour to Ine might seem odd, but I really want to include a coastal part—any thoughts? Is renting a car in Japan a total hassle?

And finally, is it absolutely necessary to book all accommodations in advance if we’re traveling in August? Or can I leave some flexibility for the Kanazawa / Ine / Himeji portion? Maybe if we really love a place and want to stay longer?

en recherchant déjà sur booking, nous avons trouvé une petite villa de 80 m² très proche de la gare de Shibuya avec deux chambres, sdb, salon, cuisine, ect... le propriétaire nous en demande 100 € / nuit, pensez vous que ce soit une bonne affaire, ou est ce que nous pouvons encore attendre un peu, pour peut être trouver une meilleur affaire !

Bonjour à tous je prépare mon deuxième voyage au Japon qui se fera fin juin/deux premières semaines de juillet 2020 pour un total de 3 semaines. Destination Kyushu et Okinawa - par précaution nous commencerons par quelques jours sur Okinawa. Nous atterrissons directement à Fukuoka (sur Finnair via Helsinki) et repartons de même (sur JAL via Tokyo). Je sais que ce n'est pas la période idéale il risque de pleuvoir et d'y avoir peut être des typhons, mais nous ferons avec :) Avez vous des conseils ? mon compagnon est plus âgé que moi (il a 71 ans) et je voudrais éviter de trop bouger sur les îles (je préfère faire des haltes en général de 3 jours pour profiter des endroits que nous visitons). En même temps pour Okinawa ne pas m'éloigner de l'île principale est dommage - mais j'ai du mal à mettre en place un itinéraire avec des vols internes par exemple vers Miyakijima qui ne coutent pas trop chers. Je pensais pouvoir partir de Fukuoka et revenir à Kagoshima (point de départ de nos visites de Kyushu) mais j'ai l'impression que ce n'est pas possible. Je n'arrive pas à voir si c'est possible d'arriver à Miyakijima en partant de Fukuoka, et repartir de Naha vers le Kyushu. Par ailleurs - sur le site de la compagnie Peach les vols ne sont déjà plus disponibles, est-ce que c'est parce que les réservations ne sont pas encore ouvertes ou qu'il n'y a déjà plus de place ? Ce sont beaucoup de questions qui recoupent certainement d'autres discussions, je suis désolée. Merci par avance et bonne soirée !

We’re thinking of spending 3 weeks in Asia this fall to visit some of the major capitals on this vast continent. We’d like to get a (very rough) sense of just how fast Asia is moving compared to what we see in the West (we’re from Quebec). For now, our very preliminary list includes Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Singapore. There are obviously plenty of other options—Seoul, Shanghai, etc.

In short, we want to go during Golden Week, see late-blooming cherry trees, and have the freedom to get around with a rental car. Here’s the plan: 18-day itinerary in Japan (April 25 → May 12) Goal: freedom, late cherry blossoms, culture & nature

Days 1–3: Tokyo (April 25–27) Arrival and adjustment (no car needed yet). Neighborhoods to visit: Shinjuku, Asakusa, Meiji Jingu, Shibuya, Odaiba. Suggested activities: Ghibli Museum, Sumida River cruise, izakaya meals. Late cherry blossoms (yaezakura) possible at Shinjuku Gyoen. Pick up the rental car on the morning of April 27.

Days 4–5: Mount Fuji & Hakone (April 27–28) Route: Tokyo → Kawaguchiko/Hakone (~2 h).

Activities: Lake Kawaguchi, Chureito Pagoda (Fuji views + late cherry blossoms) Onsen baths, Hakone Open-Air Museum. Stay: ryokan with onsen and views of Mount Fuji.

Hi everyone, So great to be back on this forum😉

I just lightened my wallet by 3000 € for 3 tickets: Paris > Tokyo > Osaka > Paris (well, not just mine—I’m exaggerating, there are two of us). For my daughter’s 10th birthday, we’re heading to Japan—it’s her "decade gift," though I thought she’d pick London🏴‍☠️. But I’ve been dreaming of going back to Japan since my 2013 trip, so I’ll admit this trip is (a lot) for me too. We’re traveling during school holidays, so the ticket prices are unfortunately sky-high. Maybe I could’ve gotten a better deal if I’d waited, but who knows... oh well, it’s done now. We leave at the end of October, so we still have a few months to prepare. That said, I’d rather start early to make sure we don’t miss anything (like the Ghibli Museum—I couldn’t go last time, and anyway, I’ll have to wait until September to book). Last time, there were three adults, so it was pretty straightforward. Eleven years later, well, now it’s two adults with a 10-year-old😛.

So I’m wondering how many days to spend in Tokyo. My daughter idealizes the city (that’s why she wants to go to Japan), and she’s really drawn to Japanese culture and food. Actually, what first got her interested in Japan were all the *kawaii* character products... Tokyo is such a fascinating city, but it can also be exhausting—especially for a kid, and I’m not sure what to expect. Beyond Tokyo, honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I was thinking of Hakone and maybe stopping by Fujikyu Highlands. Then heading down to Osaka for a few days in Kyoto before flying home (our return flight is from Osaka). We only have 11 days there (not counting the arrival day, and since our flight leaves at 11:30 PM on departure day, we’ll have the whole day), so it’s not a ton of time. I already spent a week in Kyoto on my last trip (huge crush on it), and I’d love to have two months there, but... well, you know how it is.

For example: 5 days in Tokyo 2 days in Hakone 4 days in Osaka/Kyoto

What do you think? If you’ve done this trip with kids, do you have any tips for family-friendly accommodations in Tokyo and Hakone? My daughter would love to try an onsen. We have a decent budget, but it’s not unlimited. We’d like to book as we go to spread out the costs a bit.

What a joy to be back on this forum that I’ve browsed for so many years :-)!

I’m heading to Japan with my partner in November 2025. This will be my second trip there and his first.

I was planning to go from Tokyo to Matsumoto, which I haven’t visited before, and from there, check out Shirahone Onsen and then hike from Magome to Tsumago. However, after reading several travel journals, I’ve realized that the village of Shirakawa-go and its surroundings look amazing. Back in 2006, I visited Takayama, which I loved, but I don’t want to stay there again.

To visit the places mentioned above (Shirahone Onsen, Shirakawa-go, Magome, and Tsumago), I’m thinking that a car might be more convenient than public transport, especially for getting from Shirakawa-go to Magome. Could you confirm if that’s the case? If so, is it easy to rent a car for a few days to do a loop starting from Matsumoto?

Logiquement, nous avons prévu de partir avec ma femme au Japon mi Mai 2021 (On verra si cela est possible étant donné le contexte actuel). J'essaye tant bien que mal de préparer un itinéraire sympathique mais cela s'avère beaucoup plus complexe que prévu étant donné le nombre de choses incroyables que ce pays propose. Sachant que nous sommes intéressés par pratiquement tout (ville, nature, gastronomie...) et surtout on aime mixer et varier les journées.

Honnêtement, les choix a réaliser sont compliqués. Etant donné que ça sera notre premier voyage au Japon, nous souhaitons faire les incontournables bien entendu (mais je sens bien qu'il va falloir choisir les incontournables des incontournables 😉 )

Du coup, je suis intéressé par vos avis et conseils concernant une première ébauche que j'ai prévu.

Du coup, j'ai quelques questions : _Que pensez vous de l'itinéraire ? Des choses à modifier ou optimiser ? Je me pose la question pour Osaka notamment (3 soirs) et Kyoto sur 4 jours complets ou j'ai un peu peur d'une "lassitude" concernant les temples même si ils ont l'air magnifique (sachant que ces 4j sont à Kyoto même).

_Il nous semble possible d'ajouter une journée dans le circuit mais je ne sais pas ou cela serait le plus judicieux (Tokyo, Nikko, Nara, Uji, Himeji, Kyoto, Miyajima ou autres)

Hi there, I’ve got a few questions about Kyoto for our trip in early November (we’re staying 5 days): 1) Is it worth spending a day in Kurama/Kibune from Kyoto? Has anyone tried the onsen in Kurama? 2) Visiting Fushimi Inari for sunset and wandering around in the evening—good idea? 3) Going to the Gion Corner show in Kyoto? 4) Skipping the more touristy temples in Kyoto (Golden Temple, Silver Temple) to see less crowded ones like Shinshogokuraku-ji and Tofuku-ji? 5) Any recommendations for a kaiseki dinner (under 10,000 yen)?
