Après avoir ces dernières années privilégier l'Asie, nous allons découvrir l'Afrique en commençant par l'Afrique du Sud (espérons que ce n'est qu'un début!).
J'ai lu les guides (Lonely et Routard), les carnets de voyage et les discussion sur ce site. Mon itinéraire a changé sans arrêt à tel point que je suis un peu perdue. Aussi, je soumets à vos avis, conseils l'itinéraire sur lequel je me suis arrêtée à ce jour.
Vol pris - départ le lundi 27 janvier - arrivée Le Cap 6H45 le mardi 28 / Retour samedi 8 février à 8h30.
voici mon projet d'itinéraire :
Mardi 28 janvier - vol à destination de PE vers 11h - arrivée PE vers 12h30 - Arrivée à l'entrée d'Addo Park vers 16h. Découverte puis nuit soit dans le Park ou à proximité (avis souhaité)
Mercredi 29 janvier - matin découverte d'ADDO puis départ vers Schotia (arrivée 14:45) pour safaris et nuit
Jeudi 30 janvier - Safari à Schotia tôt le matin - découverte vers 10h pour la Garden Route - (activités à creuser)- Nuit à Storms River ou Nature's Valley
Vendredi 31/01 - Balade le long de la Garden Route - nuit à Wilderness (activités à creuser)
Samedi 01/02 - découverte Oudtshoorn - Prince Albert - Swartberg Pass - Nuit à Calitzdorp
Dimanche 02/02 - En route vers les vignobles - Déjeuner à Boschendal - nuit à Franschhoek
Lundi 03/02 - Babylonstoren - Stellenbosch et là dilemme soit nuit au Cap ou à Hermanus (si en février cela vaut le coup)
Mardi 04/02 au vendredi 07/02 - Le Cap. En commençant par la Péninsule si nuit à Hermanus. Mais il est aussi peut-être possible d'aller directement au Cap le lundi soir et de faire Hermanus la journée de découverte de la Péninsule. Pensez-vous que 4 jours au Cap c'est trop.
Samedi 08/02 - Vol à destination de la France à 8h30.

We’re planning our second trip to South Africa in July 2026. In 2023, we did a loop from Joburg, Golden Gate, Drakensberg, Hluhluwe, St Lucia, Eswatini, Kruger, Blyde River Canyon, and back to Joburg. This time, we’d like to go to Cape Town and do a road trip to Port Elizabeth, then fly back to Joburg to return to Kruger. At this stage of my planning, here’s what it could look like:
D1 to D4: Cape Town and Cape of Good Hope (Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, Waterfront, Bo-Kaap, Boulders, Cape Point, Chapman’s Peak Drive). I’ve spotted a few places to stay between Camps Bay and Hout Bay (3 nights). D5 and D6: Either Karoo NP or Hermanus and De Hoop. Any opinions to tip the scales? I’ll admit I’m already leaning toward Karoo (the "wild" vibe of the landscapes and wildlife encounters appeal to me much more than the seaside, which feels less exotic). If we go for Karoo, where should we stay? Inside the park or in Beaufort West? I’ve seen good reviews for Ko-ka Tsara Bush Camp, but maybe it’s better to stay in the Sanparks cottages to make the most of the park? (2 nights) Option B is to do Stellenbosch (though vineyards aren’t great in winter) and/or the Whale Route—Betty’s Bay, Hermanus, De Hoop (2 nights near Gansbaai). D7 and D8: Klein Karoo, Oudtshoorn. Staying at De Cango Guest Farm (2 nights). D9 and D10: Knysna, Robberg Nature Reserve, Tsitsikamma (2 nights in Plettenberg Bay and 1 night in PE). D11: Flight from Port Elizabeth to Joburg at 7 AM and drive to Marloth Park.
For Kruger, I’ve booked 2 nights in Marloth Park, 1 night in Skukuza, 2 nights in Satara, and 1 night in Talamati, which we loved. I’ll book the last night in Graskop later since we want to revisit the Blyde Canyon area.
I’d love all the feedback you can give on my itinerary, especially for days 5 and 6. If you have recommendations for accommodations for 4 people, I’d appreciate those too. Thanks! 🙂

I’m starting to plan a great trip for the last three weeks of January 2027 (my first time in South Africa).
After spending a few hours (!) browsing this forum, here’s a rough first draft of my itinerary:
D0 Arrival at JNB D1, D2 Blyde River Canyon D3, D4, D5, D6, D7: Kruger D8, D9, D10: St Lucia and surrounding area D11, D12, D13, D14: Drakensberg + Lesotho
D15 A very long driving day to the south (hope the AC doesn’t break down!)
D16, D17, D18, D19 southwest coast (so far I’ve noted Oudtshoorn, Robberg Nature Reserve, Wilderness NP, De Hoop Reserve, and a bit of the wine route) D20, D21 Cape Town (peninsula and a bit of the city) + domestic flight and return flight (departure from JNB at 11 PM)
A few questions before refining this: - Do you see any major issues with this itinerary?
- We don’t have a choice on dates, and personally, I prefer green landscapes to desert ones anyway, but do you really see far fewer animals in January than in the dry season? Five days in Kruger should give us enough time to spot plenty of different animals despite the tall grass, right? As for the heat, we’re from Réunion, so we’re relatively used to it, even though I know it’s not the same type of heat.
- Can I trust the distances and driving times given by Google Maps?
- Picking up the vehicle in Johannesburg and dropping it off in Cape Town: how much might that cost us? I’m thinking it probably won’t be worse (in terms of time or money, since there are five of us—2 adults + 3 kids) than going back to Joburg after Lesotho, taking a flight to Cape Town, and renting another vehicle... but maybe I’m wrong.
- Finally, wouldn’t it be better to focus on just one of the two regions (either the northeast or Cape Town and the south coast)? If it were up to me, I’d stick to the first part and extend a few stops... but not everyone agrees! And we’re thinking that since it’ll be really hot, a second part of the trip that’s a bit """cooler""" would be welcome.

I’m reaching out today to gather some great tips for the second part of our trip to South Africa, which will take place from 03/21 to 04/11. We don’t want to rush too much either. We’ll start in Cape Town (tickets already booked) since it seems like a good time to visit this region—except for the whales in Hermanus, which we won’t be seeing. Oh, and I almost forgot, we’re renting a car for both legs of the trip for more freedom.
The first part is planned like this:
- 03/21: Arrival in Cape Town, staying until 03/24 - 03/25: Visit to the Cape, including a stop in Simon’s Town - 2 nights in Stellenbosch from 03/26 to 03/28 - 3 nights in Knysna to explore the area from 03/28 to 03/31 - 03/31: Flight from Port Elizabeth to Durban, where we’ll spend one night in Umhlanga
After that, I’m a bit lost 🙂. Next, I was thinking of doing:

First off, I’d like to thank everyone on this forum for their great tips—they really helped us plan this trip!
The trip: We spent 15 days between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, then a week around Kruger (including Blyde River Canyon). We found South Africans to be welcoming and always ready to help. We never felt unsafe (just followed basic safety rules). The police are very visible, especially on the roads.
Logistics: We’d booked our accommodations in advance but made a few changes on the spot based on how we felt at the time. We rented two vehicles from Firefly (Hertz). No complaints—recent cars, quick returns, and the deposit wasn’t charged. We’d gotten our international driver’s permits... which stayed in France! Luckily, no one asked for them. Driving on the left wasn’t an issue (it wasn’t our first time). The roads we took were in good, even great, condition. Only a few tracks to lodges or parks were rough and required extra caution. Lots of pedestrians on the sides of roads, even highways. And plenty of very slow trucks. But they pull over to let you pass. It’s also common for cars to cross into the opposite lane to overtake, even with white lines. We took two domestic flights: one early in the morning (Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth) and one in the late afternoon (Cape Town to Johannesburg) to save time.
We had some highlights and a few disappointments—all part of the journey! More details coming soon.

Organized trips are pretty expensive $$$$, but the security aspect reassures me. I’d love to hear your thoughts on safety in South Africa and whether it’s easy to arrange activities like visiting vineyards, Cape Town, and going on a safari on our own. Which is better in terms of cost—booking an organized trip or doing it ourselves? It’s definitely less exciting to follow a group for 10 days. We’re a couple in our 50s who love nature. 😊🦁

Pour notre 1er voyage dans ce grand pays, nous avons choisi de ne pas courir et d'explorer l'ouest du pays : régions du Cap Occidental (péninsule du Cap, West Coast, Cederberg, Winelands, Garden Route, Karoo), du Cap Oriental (Côte, Addo Elephant NP, Amathole, Wild Coast, Highlands), et peut-être du Cap Nord (Kagalagadi Transfrontier Park, Augrabies Falls).
Nous avons des billets Paris / Le Cap aller-retour. Nous allons passer 2 à 3 jours au Cap puis allons louer une voiture pendant 30 jours.
J'ai plusieurs questions à poser à ceux qui connaissent le pays : 1 - Nous voyageons "lentement". Est-ce que nous aurons le temps d'aller jusqu'au Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park ? ou est-ce que vous nous conseillez de rester dans les régions du Cap Occidental et du Cap Oriental ? 2. Nous arrivons au Cap vers 23 h. Est-ce que vous nous conseillez de réserver un hôtel près de l'aéroport et d'y aller avec la navette de l'hôtel ou de réserver un hôtel dans le centre et d'y aller en taxi ? 3. Nous allons louer une voiture de type "berline moyenne". Est-ce que nous pourrons rouler sur des routes non goudronnées ou est-ce qu'il y a, comme en Australie, une clause qui l'interdit ? 4. Nous conseillez-vous d'emporter du matériel de camping pour dormir dans les parcs ? (tente, sacs de couchage, matériel de cuisine)

Day 2: Continue visiting Tsitsikamma NP early in the morning, then Robberg Nature Reserve, night at Ebb and Flow Rest Camp. Day 3: Visit the Wilderness area, night at Ebb and Flow Rest Camp. Day 4: Drive to Hermanus. Several options: Bontebok NP or The Hoop and Cape Agulhas; night in Hermanus. Day 5: Coastal trail, boat trip (?), night in Cape Town. Day 6: Table Mountain, Bo-Kaap, Waterfront; night in Cape Town. Day 7: Cape Peninsula, night in Cape Town. Day 8: Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden, Matjiesfontein; night in the area. Day 9: AM: Karoo NP; night in Beaufort West. Day 10: Karoo NP; night in Beaufort West. Day 11: AM: Camdeboo NP; night in Graaff-Reinet. Day 12: Morning: Camdeboo NP; drive to Addo Elephant NP; visit depending on arrival time; night at Addo Elephant Rest Camp. Day 13: Addo Elephant NP; night in Port Elizabeth. Day 14: Early flight.
Does this seem balanced and suitable for July? It’s quite packed, but we’ve already had to skip quite a bit. Initially, would it be better to spend 2 nights in Tsitsikamma and just one in Wilderness? Or just one night at each to free up a day for something else?
For the car, is a minivan enough, or should we plan at least an SUV for the parks given the season?

Does this seem balanced and suitable for July? It’s quite packed, but we’ve already had to skip quite a bit. Initially, would it be better to spend 2 nights in Tsitsikamma and just one in Wilderness? Or just one night at each to free up a day for something else?
For the car, is a minivan enough, or should we plan at least an SUV for the parks given the season?

Nous voilà repartis sur un nouveau voyage en perspective auquel on a pas pu résister. En effet, Qatar Airways avait lancé une offre de 10 000 billets gratuits (juste les taxes à payer) pour les soignants (je suis infirmière)
On n’a hélas pas réussi à avoir un code promotionnel mais quelques semaines plus tard on a reçu un code promotionnel à 50% et on a saisi l opportunité.
Sur le fil du rasoir, on a réussi à avoir deux billets aller retour et on s est décidé pour 15 jours dans la région du cap en Afrique du Sud du 16 au 30 novembre.
Il y a évidemment un risque d annulation si COVID-19 mais les billets seront alors reportés.
On part donc sur un road-trip en 4x4 avec matériel de camping pour alterner nuits en camping et hôtel. On va se concentrer sur la région du Sud et je suis donc preneuse de vos lumières...

- 2 nights in the Manyeleti private reserve (Honeyguide Montobeni)
- 2 nights in Kruger for a self-drive safari (which reserve, or where to stay?)
- 1 night at Blyde River Canyon (where?)
- 2 nights in the Balule private reserve (Imagine Africa Luxury)
Then heading to CAPE TOWN.
So as you’ve probably guessed, I’m not sure:
- where to stay for the BRC and need lodge names
- coming from Manyeleti and heading to the BRC, which strategic spot in greater Kruger to choose (I was thinking Satara, not too far) but couldn’t find any available places for October on Sandparc
- and which domestic flight destination for Manyeleti from JNB (Hoedspruit?) to arrive at Orpen Gate,
- And same question for which airport to fly out to Cape Town after Balule.

I’ve planned 2 days with long drives to minimize time spent outside the parks. These are Sunday the 18th: Johannesburg Airport to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Reserve, and Friday the 23rd: St. Lucia to Nelspruit (staying in South Africa) or as close as possible to visit the Canyon the next day.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary, especially these 2 days—are they doable or not? Should I book in advance, or will there be places to sleep along the way if we don’t make it to our planned destination? What’s the crowd level in South Africa in October?
As for Kruger, I’ve chosen campsites with camping facilities, prioritizing the "satellite" camps, at least in the northern part!! I’ve planned to change camps almost every day to combine travel and wildlife spotting, but is this the right choice?

Nous partirions de Johan. vers Graskop pour la nuit Traversée du canyon Blyde (la journée) Arriver dans le Kruger (Phalaborwa) Y passer 3 jours (dans rest camp question budget (lesquels ??)) Sortir par Giryondo et aller à Massingir pour la nuit Faire la route jusque Chidenguele et y dormir Faire la route jusque Tofo pour y rester plusieurs jours Aller ensuite à Vilanculos.
Etant donné que nous louons la voiture en AS, on ferait la route en sens inverse en s'arrêtant à Morrungulo, Bilene, Nelspruit.
Qu'en pensez vous ?
On aurait voulu relier le Mozambique par la porte tout au nord (Pafuri) mais la route jusque Vilanculos est longue et je ne vois pas de possibilités d'hébergement sur la route...

Je pense attaquer directement par le KTP pour 4/5 jours que l'on adore, avec si possible deux nuits en satellite camp, souvenir d'une expérience inoubliable à Garaghab. C'est là que ça se complique, on aimerais bien aller faire un tour en Namibie ou au Botswana avant de finir par le Kruger pour encore 5/6 jours. Vol retour le 13/08 au départ de JNB.

Bonjour, je prépare un voyage en Afrique du Sud.
Atterrissage à Johannesburg, direction Blyde River Canyon, Kruger, Swaziland, Santa Lucia, Lesotho et ensuite direction Cap Town en longeant la côte.
J'aurai aimé avoir plus de renseignement sur le temps de route entre Santa Lucia et le Lesotho. J'ai loué une voiture de type ford fiesta mais pas de 4*4. Peut-on faire la route en 1 jour entre Santa Lucia et lesotho (ou je n'ai pas de réservation pour le moment) ou faut il faire une pause entre les deux destinations ?

Voici le trajet que nous avons imaginé, qu'en pensez-vous ? - Vendredi 3: Arrivée au Cap en soirée. 1 nuit au Cap. - Samedi 4 au lundi 6: Le Cap et environ (notamment Cap Bonne Espérance). 3 nuits. - Mardi 7: départ très tôt le matin en avion pour Jobourgh. On loue une voiture à l'aéroport et nous souhaitions aller directement dans un hôtel à proximité du Parc Pilanesberg. 1 nuit. - Mercredi 8: Safari dans le Parc Pilanesberg. 1 nuit. - Jeudi 9: Safari dans le Parc Pilanesberg et/ou Sun City pour ma fille. - Vendredi 10: départ très tôt le matin pour le Parc Madikwe. 1 nuit. - Samedi 11: Safari. 1 nuit - Dimanche 12: Safari. 1 nuit. - Lundi 13: départ très tôt pour Johanesburg, on rend la voiture et nous avons notre vol retour pour Paris à 18h00. Pensez-vous qu'il soit possible de rallier Jobourgh de Madikwe en 5/6h ? Jouable ? Un autre moyen pour rallier le jour même l'aéroport plus rapidement (départ de Gaborone ? ).
Avez-vous d'autres idées ? Nous voulons éviter les parcs du NE, à cause du paludisme... Des erreurs à ne pas faire ? Des tips ?

On loue une voiture à l'aéroport et nous souhaitions aller directement dans un hôtel à proximité du Parc Pilanesberg. 1 nuit. - Mercredi 8: Safari dans le Parc Pilanesberg. 1 nuit. - Jeudi 9: Safari dans le Parc Pilanesberg et/ou Sun City pour ma fille. - Vendredi 10: départ très tôt le matin pour le Parc Madikwe. 1 nuit. - Samedi 11: Safari. 1 nuit - Dimanche 12: Safari. 1 nuit. - Lundi 13: départ très tôt pour Johanesburg, on rend la voiture et nous avons notre vol retour pour Paris à 18h00. Pensez-vous qu'il soit possible de rallier Jobourgh de Madikwe en 5/6h ? Jouable ? Un autre moyen pour rallier le jour même l'aéroport plus rapidement (départ de Gaborone ? ).
Avez-vous d'autres idées ? Nous voulons éviter les parcs du NE, à cause du paludisme... Des erreurs à ne pas faire ? Des tips ?

Nous avons une idée de circuit pour juillet / août 2020, mais nous avons quelques questions sur des routes et régions que nous n’avons pas encore faites.
J’ai déjà fait un petit circuit sous BasCamp, mais ma version est un peu vieillotte, c’est pour ça que je viens chercher des réponses auprès des connaisseurs des régions sauvages du Botswana et de la Namibie !
1. Entre Ganzhi et la Gates Xade : comment est la piste et combien de temps faut-il compter ?
2. Qui connaît la piste qui va de Nokaneng au Khaudum National Park ?
3. Comment sont les pistes et les campings du Khaudum National Park ?
4. Quelles région du Khaudum National Park est la plus sympa en paysages et animaux ?
5. Naye-Naye Concession Area vaut-elle une petite visite ?
6. Même question pour le Mangetti National Park ?
7. Depuis Okaukuejo quelle est la meilleure solution pour rejoindre Purros ? Nous pensions faire Opuwo - Orupembe - Purros - Palmwag !
8. Pour faire des photos astronomiques quelle serait la région la plus propice : le NamibRand ou le Spitzkuppe ?
9. Au KTP dans la région de Kaa Pans, où dormir pour avoir la chance de voir la hyène brune 😜 ?

nous envisageons un safari en mode assez "luxe" en Afrique du Sud en septembre/octobre prochain 2020
tout d'abord, selon vous, votre expérience, est ce une bonne période ?
Nous aurons visiter la Namibie en juillet, mais sommes très attirés par le côté safari en ce moment.
nous envisagons d'attérir à Johansbourg, de passer 3 nuits dans la région de Blyde canyon ( je crois que la route y menant est sympa, cascades, grotte à visiter ?! ), nous aimerions aussi y faire qq randos si possible?!
puis 2 nuits dans le parc kruger ( ou 3 ! )
et enfin 2 nuits dans la réserve privé de Sabi ( ou 3 ! ).
je ne voulais pas trop me précipiter, mais en budgettant mon projet, je m'aperçois qu'il y a DEJA très peu de place dans la réserve privée de Sabi, et que si nous osuhaitons y dormir il faudrait réserver dès maintenant ...
du coup, avez vous eu la chance d'y être allés? que pensez vous du choix de notre itinéraire ? serons nous déçus par rapport à Etosha en juillet ?

The plane should land on Saturday around 11 AM. After collecting luggage and the car, I think we’ll leave the airport between 1 and 2 PM. Question #1: Where should we stop along the way, allowing some buffer time so we don’t end up driving at night if the flight is delayed? (The idea isn’t to sightsee but just to take a break while making progress toward Kruger.)
We’ll spend part of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (a little over 4 days) in Kruger. Questions #2 and beyond: What route should we take? I’ve considered two options: either enter from the south (Malelane Gate?) and head north up to the Olifants area to exit at Orpen Gate. How many accommodations should we book in this case, and where? Or enter at Orpen Gate and exit near Hazyview (or the other way around, and near Hazyview, should it be Paul Kruger Gate or Phabeni?). In this case, it would allow us to spend 2 nights in one place and 2 in another, but we’d skip the south (or is it possible to visit it in a day?) Well, for accommodations (accessible by sedan), all suggestions are welcome… but I’ve checked October availability, and there aren’t many left 😕 I plan to spend Thursday in the park and exit before it closes to sleep outside, which would save time the next day for the drive to the airport. I was thinking of Hazyview (again, no sightseeing since we already visited the area in 2009), but do you have another/better idea?
For clarity, here’s a summary of the Kruger part: Day 1: Arrival in Johannesburg and drive to ? Day 2: Enter Kruger (likely late morning or early afternoon) Days 3, 4, and 5: Kruger with exit at the end of Day 5 Day 6: Drive to the airport for the Cape Town and surrounds portion
Regarding Kruger bookings, it seems (I lost my old notes when my hard drive crashed—I backed up work documents but not vacation ones, what a mess!) that you can monitor reservations, and if a preferred accommodation becomes available, you can book it and cancel the old one. Is that still the case? (And is it easy to do?)
Thanks in advance for your answers. I’m off to reread travel journals about Cape Town and will probably be back with more questions (the accommodation availability issue seems less urgent there, so less of a priority).

Hi, we’re planning to take the scenic route back from Kruger Park (Orpen Gate) but we’ll have our two travel bags in the trunk. In some countries, there’s no rear shelf to hide the trunk. I don’t know how it works in SA—what do you think?
We have the same concern because we’d like to do the Leopard Trail, but we’ll have our stuff with us too. We’re wondering if leaving the car in the parking lot where the trail starts is somewhat monitored or not. Thanks for your feedback!

Bonjour, j'aimerais avoir quelques conseils d'optimisation d'itinéraires .
Nous, grands parents et "voyageurs" (72-68 a) emmenons 2 petits enfants ( 13 et 9a), passionnés par la nature et les animaux , fils d'homme des bois et chasseurs à l'arc !
Nous arrivons à Johannesburg le 15 Mai 2020 et repartons de Joburg le 26 Mai. Nous louons à l'arrivée et pour tout le séjour un 4x4 avec 2 tentes sur le toit , nous dormirons donc dans des "emplacements"et seront autonomes pour la "cantine" .
12 jours de dispo.
L'objectif premier est d'aller au Kruger park et d'y rester 5 ou 6 nuits. Mais quel circuit ? ensuite, pour les emplacements j'ai compris que je trouverais sur "sanpark"
Il n'est pas gênant de changer de camp chaque soir, sachant qu'avec ce genre de véhicule, il faut tout de même replier la tente chaque jour pour se déplacer. Nous ne voulons pas faire des milliers de Km avec les enfants, donc nous n'irons pas jusqu'au cap !
Pour l'instant, je retiens comme autres spots, Blyde canyon et Swaziland .
Si vous avez des idées conseils pour occuper au mieux mes 2 futurs "crocodiles dundee" ce serait avec grand plaisirs!

Pour profiter plus longtemps, nous pensions partir de mi-juillet à début août ( 3 semaines). L'idée serait de traverser le Kruger du nord au sud, de descendre jusqu'à Sainte-Lucie. En avril nous avions fait graskop, Blyde canyon, kruger, shewula mountain camp, hlane et Mlilwane.
Auriez-vous une idée d'itinéraire sympa avec des randonnées faciles, j'avais aussi pensé au Drakensberg mais j'ai peur qu'il fasse trop froid. Merci d'avance pour vos précieux conseils :)
