Which destination to prioritize in Southeast Asia in June/July/August/September?
🙂 Hi everyone!

Hope you're all doing well! It's been a while since I last traveled, but I'm finally heading out again soon!

For those familiar with SOUTHEAST ASIA, I'm planning to leave in mid-June (with the trip ending at the latest in November), and I don’t have a precise idea of exact places or itineraries yet. The thing is, this period is usually the rainy season...

Any advice? I was thinking of Malaysia or Indonesia, like Sulawesi, for example (all countries and islands in Southeast Asia interest me except Bali).

Any recommendations? I’m doing my research online, but if anyone here has the time and knowledge, I’d love to hear from you.

Thanks everyone, take care and stay happy! ❤️

Feedback on a less touristy Thailand itinerary in February?
Hi everyone, We’re heading to Thailand from February 3rd to 24th, as a couple (37 years old). We love local cuisine, street food, small restaurants, and quiet bars for a drink in the evening. We’re also big fans of turquoise waters and white sand beaches. Our planned itinerary looks like this:

Chiang Mai: 4 or 5 days to rediscover the city, temples, and markets. We already visited the Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces a few years ago and loved it, so we’re heading back for a few days there :)

Bangkok: 3 days, with a day trip to Ayutthaya.

Then heading down to Trat province to enjoy the islands of Koh Chang, Koh Mak, and Koh Kood.

We’ve read that the southern islands (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Phangan, Koh Lipe, etc.) are often packed this time of year, so we’re looking for quieter islands but with some accommodations and restaurants/bars. For reference, we really enjoyed Koh Rong Samloem, Koh Rong, Phu Quoc, and the Philippine islands. 👍 Does this itinerary fit well with what we’re looking for? Or do you have other suggestions for routes or islands to prioritize during this period? Thanks in advance for your tips!

Various questions about Bangkok with kids
Good evening,

Our family trip (2 kids, boys aged 6 and 9) is coming up fast, and I have a few questions. I’ve seen that quite a few people on this forum are active about Thailand, so I hope you can help me out :-)

- I have a Free mobile plan with a good amount of data abroad (35GB). Do you know if the Bolt or Grab apps work well with a French SIM? I’ve read that the app might not work if the SIM isn’t Thai, but I’ve also seen French travelers using their SIMs in Thailand, so I’m not sure what to think.

- What tips do you have to avoid traveler’s diarrhea (especially for our 6- and 9-year-olds)? I’m already preparing them to wash their hands often and not put their hands in their mouths or brush their teeth with tap water (they’re still little and might not control the water well in their mouths). Are there certain dishes or food stands to avoid? Are ice cubes really off-limits too?

- We arrive in Bangkok at 9 AM, and we have a French-speaking guided tour scheduled for the next morning (all day). The itinerary isn’t finalized yet with the guide—I need to get back in touch soon. What do you recommend doing on that first day, which might be tiring after the long flight and jet lag? Our hotel has a nice pool, but I’d love for us to get out and explore a bit :-)

- Is the Grand Palace really best visited early in the morning to avoid crowds?

- I’d love to visit a night or floating market, but they’re all on weekends. Unfortunately, we’re in Bangkok from Wednesday to Saturday morning (then we take the train to Ayutthaya in the morning). Is there a market on Friday night? I saw Chatuchak, but Friday night doesn’t seem like the best time—is it still worth going?

I’ve looked for answers to these questions, but I’m either not finding a definitive answer or I’m overwhelmed by all the things to do/see in Bangkok. So, I’m hoping your advice or experiences can help me out!

Thanks in advance, and have a great evening! :-)

Traveling to the Philippines by Ferry or Cargo Ship
Hi there,

I’d like to travel from France to the Philippines without flying. I’ve found ways to reach the South China Sea easily, whether from China, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc. However, I can’t find a straightforward way to get to the Philippines by sea. There’s a cargo ship from Zamboanga to Sandakan, but getting to Sandakan is really complicated. Do you have any simpler ideas for ferries or cargo ships? I can arrive anywhere in the Philippines. Has anyone tried hitching rides on cargo ships in ports? From which port?

Thanks a lot!

What budget should we plan for the Philippines and which payment method to use?
Hi there, We’re heading to Cebu, Bohol, Negros, and Siquijor soon. Our guide is handling hotel and ferry reservations, and we’ll pay day by day. Is it easy to pay for accommodations by card, or is it better to have cash? Also, any idea about the cost of living? Is 1000 € per person for 3 weeks enough for accommodation, food, and ferries? That’s the estimate he gave us. Thanks in advance! 😊

Which islands to visit in the Philippines?

Which islands should we prioritize in the Philippines?
We’re planning a month there, and there are definitely some beautiful—*very* beautiful—islands, but which ones to choose? Can you point me to the must-sees, the ones that are easiest to reach by boat, bus, or flight if it saves a ton of time and isn’t too expensive? Also, which island should we start our loop on, given we’re coming from Vietnam and our return flight to Paris is already booked out of Manila? Thanks in advance for all your tips. Philippe

Accommodation in the Philippines
Hi there,

While our next trip is still just an idea, I wanted to check out what accommodations are available in the Philippines. I’m a bit put off by what I found—I think it’s really expensive and it’s not exactly dreamy! We’re not into staying in dorms with shared bathrooms anymore, but in Asia and South America, we’ve always found charming little places for around 30 € a night. Is that impossible in the Philippines? Are there other sites besides Booking to look at? Thanks for your tips!

Which other island to visit with Luzon and Bohol?
Hi there, I’m planning a trip to the Philippines in January or February 2026. On top of visiting Luzon, I’m thinking of going to one or two other islands, but I’m hesitating—which one(s)? I’d like to do some snorkeling, enjoy a beautiful beach, and explore the interior of Bohol. Which island(s) can you recommend? Thanks in advance for your help! ceinture

Ocean Jet ferry schedules
Hi everyone, I’d like to check the schedules for Ocean Jet ferry tickets between Siquijor and Tagbilaran (Panglao) on February 23, 2026, but no times are showing up. I’m connecting to a flight afterward, so I’d really like to plan ahead. Is it possible there’s no route (even for several days around that date), or is it just too early for the schedules to be posted? Thanks so much!

Car rental in Luzon (Philippines)
Hi there, Another new idea! Given the travel times and the complexity of public transport to get from Manila Airport to Banaue (with a 2-day stop in Capas for a trip to Pitalito), we’re thinking of renting a car for the week. We’ve started looking around, but the booking sites aren’t offering much—can’t find a small vehicle for two. If anyone has any tips to share, we’d love to hear them! And if two other travelers are interested in our itinerary, we can share the ride! (February 19–26). Thanks again for your help.

Are Taal Lake and Volcano worth the detour?
Hello. At the end of my trip around northern Luzon, I’m thinking of checking out the Taal Volcano site: - the lake - the volcano I plan to arrive in Tagaytay in the morning to explore the lake and volcano. Should I stay in Talisay or Tagaytay? And leave the next morning for Manila. What do you think of this plan—are the lake and volcano worth the detour from Manila? Is visiting the town of Taal before heading back to Manila of any interest? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Hotel suggestions for the Philippines (Camotes, Bantayan, Malapascua, Bohol, and Siquijor)?
Hi everyone. As I’m planning my trip for next winter, I’m looking for hotel suggestions in Camotes, Bantayan, Malapascua, Bohol, and Siquijor. The ones I had in mind seem to be fully booked (unless it’s too early?). For those familiar with the area, is it easy to find accommodations on the spot in January/February? I’m specifically looking for hotels with a pool, beachfront, air conditioning, and easy scooter rental nearby. Thanks for your tips!

Bus from Cebu to Hagnaya
Hi there. Is there a bus from Cebu to Hagnaya port? (to get to Bantayan). I’ve read about it on blogs, but 12Go only shows me taxis.... I’d heard that buses leave from the North Terminal in Cebu, so I’m looking for accommodation in that area... Any up-to-date info would be great....

Booking ferries and buses from Cebu to Panglao and from Coron to El Nido
Hi, Which site can I use to book ferry tickets (from Cebu to Panglao and from Coron to El Nido)? Everyone recommends 12Go, but they only offer 2 companies and 2 schedules for this route, even though I assume there are more... Same issue with buses... For short trips, I’ll check on the spot, but these are in high demand, and I think booking in advance is a must. Thanks for your tips!

Arriving at Caticlan Airport at 5:30 PM and taking the boat to Boracay the same evening
Hi there,

We’re flying into Caticlan Airport on March 22, 2025, at 5:30 PM. Is that too tight to hope to catch the boat to Boracay the same evening? I’ve read that the regular ferries only run until 7 PM. Also, we want to book a round-trip airport transfer package from Caticlan Airport to the boat for Boracay and drop-off at our hotel with Klook. Has anyone tried this before? What’s the difference between all their different options on their site? Thanks so much! Celine

Interesting activities and spots in Palawan
Hey everyone! I’m landing in Puerto Princesa with my best buddy in 10 days. I’d like to explore the island a bit, probably by scooter. We’re planning to head to El Nido for a tour, but not right away, I think. Any great spots you’d recommend in Palawan? Must-sees? Any tips for the southern part of the island? Thanks in advance for your awesome suggestions, and safe travels to all!!

5-day visit to Palawan: your thoughts on this itinerary
Hi there, We’ve never visited Palawan before. This time, we’d like to spend a few days there. We’ll be there from the evening of October 30th until the early morning of November 5th (our return flight is at 7:20 AM). We’re arriving in Puerto Princesa and leaving from there as well. While ChatGPT gave us an itinerary suggestion, I’d still love to hear other opinions—don’t want to rely on it blindly.

Here’s ChatGPT’s proposal:

Saturday, October 31: Pearl farm + local waterfalls • 9:00 AM: Private car to Brook’s Point pearl farm (1.5–2 hour visit). • 1:00 PM: Local lunch + drive to Nagtabon Falls (1-hour jungle hike). • Overnight in Puerto Princesa. Sunday, November 1: Tabon Caves (Quezon) • 8:00 AM: Private car from PPS to Quezon (3 hours). • 11:00 AM–3:00 PM: Visit Tabon Caves (2–3 hour hike, unique archaeological site). • Return to PPS late afternoon or stay overnight in Quezon if you prefer. Monday, November 2: Puerto Princesa → Port Barton • 8:00 AM: Private car from PPS to Port Barton (3–4 hours). • Afternoon: Stroll around the village, small market, acclimatization. • Overnight in Port Barton. Tuesday, November 3: Private boat from Port Barton • 8:30 AM: Private boat for island hopping (snorkeling at Twin Reef / Fantastic Reef + peaceful Maxima Island). • Return by 4:00 PM. Wednesday, November 4: Hike in Port Barton + return to PPS • Morning: Hike to Pamuayan Falls or local jungle (1–2 hours). • 1:00 PM: Private car from Port Barton to PPS. • Overnight near the airport in PPS. Thursday, November 5: Flight from PPS to Dumaguete • Early morning flight from PPS to Dumaguete (direct or via Cebu, with plenty of buffer time).

What do you think? Where can we find trustworthy private drivers without getting ripped off? Any recommendations for typical hotels or guesthouses? Our flights are already booked—arriving in PPS at 6:30 PM and departing at 7:20 AM.

Thanks for your advice!

TAGTHAI Easy Pay for tourists?
Hi, I just read an article announcing the launch of a "tagthai easy pay" app that lets tourists pay with their phone, just like Thais do in shops by scanning the merchant’s QR code. Has anyone got more info? Are there any foreign-exchange fees or other charges? Can you top up this account with a simple transfer from our French bank account, or do you have to use cash? I guess it’s handy for avoiding too much cash while on holiday.

How to handle large expenses in Thailand?
Hi everyone, thanks so much for all your great tips! Now for expenses: should we pay "big expenses" by card, the rest in cash, or exchange a large sum at the airport (with the risks that involves)? We’re staying for a month, mostly in the countryside rather than the city. Thanks a bunch!
