Are we "bores" with our travel stories?
Reading an excerpt from "The Art of Boring People by Telling Your Travel Stories" by Matthias Debureaux first made me smile, then got me thinking… Are we "travel-bores" with our travel stories?

"Annoying is the one who, like Ulysses, had a wonderful trip. Because for every silver-tongued storyteller with marvelous tales, how many bores and nuisances… The traveler, drunk on grand images and magical encounters, has only one thing on their mind: pelting us with anecdotes, life lessons, and ideals. They’ll paint the most beautiful and distant Edens… the traveler has an endless pharmacy of stories. But nothing is designed to immunize us against travel tales. We should impose a quarantine on returning travelers. At least a dozen hours in a sobering cell. What’s the point? Months, years later, they’ll never miss an opportunity to reminisce. The evocation of their odyssey is a perpetual fireplace fire."

A provocative text, sure, but isn’t the person telling their travel story doing it mostly for themselves? Just to relive the joy of their trip? At friendly gatherings or with family, we sometimes have to endure the enthusiast… without necessarily sharing their passion for the destination!

The advantage of writing—and also of exchanges on sites like VF—is that only those who want to read a story do so… with the option to skip it anytime!

So, what do you think, authors and fans of travel stories published online?

Collaborative travel journal for lovers of the American West!
Hi everyone!

So, I’m putting into action an idea I had two years ago... I’m inviting anyone who’s interested to help build a beautiful collaborative project—a shared travel journal!!!

The concept: one post =

a photo you’ve taken in the American West that means something to you and your thoughts on that photo or about it: where and when it was taken, the story behind it, why it’s special to you...

Grab your pens!!!! (And I hope this doesn’t flop, but if it does, at least I’ll have tried!!!)

And I’ll kick things off in the next post!

Website with suggested visit duration for a country or city
Hi, I’d love to know if there’s a website that gives a rough idea of how much time you should spend visiting a particular city or country. I know my question is super general, but it’d be really great if such a site existed.

Thanks in advance for your help. Take care and happy travels.

Germany Eco Vignette Website
Hi everyone.

My family and I have decided to do a little 10-day road trip through Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. Practically all European countries require a vignette to drive on highways or in certain zones. For Germany, an Eco vignette is required to drive in certain areas, like downtown Munich. Would anyone know if this site: https://vignette-allemagne.fr/ is legit? It seems easy to use and quick, but it’s not referenced or mentioned anywhere.

Genuine site or scam? Thanks for your feedback. Best regards,

Stéphane.

Information site for visiting the Brest region
Hi, I’m Emile Le Jeune, a young IT student in Brest doing my BTS, and I’m currently on an Erasmus internship in Poland. I’m working with a classmate to create a website about our city. We’re covering various aspects of Brest—its history, activities you can do, nearby towns (Quimper, Concarneau, Morlaix, etc.), and we want the site to be really focused on tourism around Brest. It’s still under development, and we plan to make more changes. I’m posting here to ask for feedback—if you have any comments, criticisms, or suggestions for improvements, don’t hesitate! We’re still beginners in this field, so please bear with us  If you’re curious, our site is infobrest

Looking for beta testers for a travel planning website project
Hello everyone,

First off: before posting, I took the time to contact the moderation team to check if this message complied with the forum rules. Since I didn’t get a response and didn’t want to go against them, I’m posting without naming the site, including links, or any promotional intent.

For the past two years, I’ve been working solo on a website project designed to help organize a trip from A to Z, whether traveling alone or with others.

The idea is to make trip planning easier by bringing together all the useful elements in one place (regions, accommodations, activities, restaurants, hidden gems, etc.).

With development nearing completion, I’m now looking for a few people interested in joining a beta testing phase and giving me honest feedback on the experience, how clear the concept is, and what could be improved.

This isn’t a promotional effort: I’m not representing a company, I’m developing this project on my own, and I’m only looking for constructive input from fellow travelers.

A few details: — No payment is required; — No banking information is needed; — It’s simply a test to gather user feedback.

If anyone wants to know more or is up for testing, feel free to reply here or send me a private message.

Thanks so much to those who take the time to read this.

RandoCamping - Finding Accommodations During Your Bike Trek
The RandoCamping site is free for users and hosts.

Its goal is to help trekkers find accommodations (usually by the night) all across France and to promote hosts who welcome trekkers satisfactorily.

Check it out here: https://randocamping.touteslatitudes.fr

The site is collaborative and supported by associations like Cyclo-Camping International or AF3V.

It lets you plan a trip or trek (on foot or by bike) by searching for accommodations along a route. The accommodations come from the DataTourisme platform (which aggregates information from Tourist Offices) and from users (trekkers & hosts).

Train lines and passenger stations are also listed. Clicking on a station can show you (if the data is available) how accessible the platforms are with a non-dismantled bike. Bike and hiking routes come from Waymarked Trails (which is based on OpenStreetMap).

You can find more details about the site’s features on this page (version 1.0): https://randovelo.touteslatitudes.fr/randocamping-v1/

Ecuador itinerary with a 16-month-old baby
Hi there!

After scouring the forum, reading several guides, and browsing websites, here are a few questions about our upcoming trip to Ecuador this summer.

We’re planning to travel with our 16-month-old son (he’s already been to Russia, Argentina, and Uruguay in his first three months), and here are some questions we have.

The big question: What type of baby carrier would you recommend? (We have a JPMBB, but I’ve never really been able to use it—it digs into my shoulders and isn’t comfortable. For short walks or strolls with the baby, we need something solid!)

Roughly, we’d arrive in Quito and return from Guayaquil (with the end of the trip in the Galápagos). The route would be something like this: Quito, Quilotoa, Papallacta, Cotopaxi, Baños, Riobamba, Chimborazo, Cuenca, Guayaquil, and the Galápagos.

For the Galápagos, we were thinking of 8 days—does that seem reasonable?

Regarding transportation, what are the buses like in Ecuador? (More like Argentina/Chile or more like Bolivia/Nicaragua?) How manageable is it with a baby?

Does the itinerary seem doable, and how much time would you roughly spend in each place? It’s clear we won’t be doing any major ascents, but we enjoy walking—a 2-3 hour hike to see the wildlife and flora at the foot of Chimborazo doesn’t scare us.

Without a baby, what do you think of the Baños-Puyo route? Some recommend the Chimborazo descent instead. With a baby, is the Baños-Puyo route doable? Is it possible to have a baby carrier on the bike?

Thanks so much! :)

URGENT! No OTP - how to proceed without an IRCTC account? (India)
Hi there,

I need help creating my IRCTC account. I tried to create an account via the website (not the app), but I’m not receiving any OTP at my email address. It asks me to verify my OTP to confirm registration, but I’ve tried multiple emails and checked spam, trash, etc.—nothing. I’m not getting any OTP at all.

What should I do now?

I want to take the train from Delhi to Agra Cantt. What are my options without an IRCTC account? I have a trip from New Delhi to Agra and another from Agra to Jaipur.

FYI: I’d prefer to avoid the bus since it doesn’t seem to stop, and I don’t feel comfortable jumping off a moving bus. Too risky for my taste.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Questions about visiting the Pyramids and the Giza Plateau
Hi there, I’m making a quick trip to Cairo and plan to visit the pyramids... and I’ve got a few practical questions for those who’ve been before: - Can you buy tickets online before arriving? If so, what’s the official website? - If buying on-site, can you pay in euros? Or by credit card? Or do you absolutely need local currency? - Which entrance is best? The one up top, near the Great Pyramid of Khufu, or the one down by the Sphinx—probably less crowded but seems a bit "jumbled" from a video I saw? - During Ramadan, I think the site is open from 8 AM to 4 PM. Not keen on sharing the pyramids with busloads of tourists... Would you recommend arriving at 8 AM? What about the morning haze at that time? - Coming from the "New Cairo" area, is Uber the best way to get to the pyramids? I read there’s a metro not too far from the pyramids, but I have no idea if it goes to New Cairo. - How much do vendors hassle you on-site? Is it just at the entrance or also inside the site itself? Thanks so much in advance for your tips and experiences! !

Beware of CheapTickets
Oh wow, what a scam!

With a name like that, I should’ve been suspicious of this online ticket-buying site! I booked a ticket on their site. I received an invoice and an online booking confirmation.

"Thank you for your online reservation. This confirmation also serves as your invoice. You will receive a second email within 24 hours containing your e-ticket."

12 hours later, I got this message:

"You booked a flight under reservation number 5TJ5HF on our website CheapTickets.be. Unfortunately, we must inform you that we cannot issue your ticket at the original price. After consulting the participating airlines, we were unable to find a solution to issue your ticket at the initial price. We can offer you an alternative that matches your request, which we have already reserved for you. The recalculated price is 161.33 €. (...) If we do not receive your confirmation by tomorrow at 9 AM, we will no longer be able to issue your ticket at the newly recalculated price and will have to cancel your reservation."

That’s nearly a 20% increase!

Is this even legal? What can I do about it?

I checked their site again—the ticket was still listed at the same price!

On top of that, calling their customer service costs 0.34 cents per minute. They keep you waiting for 20 minutes (that’s 6 €) before you get to speak to an advisor.

I’m devastated. I’ve never seen anything like this! Apparently, I’m not the only one: http://voyageforum.com/voyage/achat_billets_cheaptickets_D649310/

Are there others in the same situation? What can we do collectively?

Advertising banners on VoyageForum
Hello everyone,

Some of you may have noticed this morning that when you’re not logged in, advertising banners appear. We’re currently running tests, which is why they may show up in different formats.

A quick clarification: these ads will only be visible to users who aren’t logged in.

They’re necessary for the site’s survival. A website like VF incurs significant costs, whether for hosting or for the team working behind the scenes—we can’t keep it running on love and fresh air alone.

A member generously offered to help out after François’s departure, but we still need a new developer, and all work deserves fair compensation.

Hervé, from myAtlas, who took over VF, has no choice but to monetize the site to ensure it can continue to exist.

We sincerely thank you for your understanding and loyalty. Your support is essential to ensuring VF’s future.

Thanks to you, we can keep this site alive and continue sharing our shared passion.

Questions about Thailand's TM6 (TDAC)
Hi there, Just a quick question about filling out the TM6 (TDAC) for Thailand. I'm going for 2 months and 3 weeks (I bought a round-trip ticket) and I'll arrive under the 60-day visa exemption since I didn't get a visa. However, I bought an exit ticket to a neighboring country before the 60 days are up to avoid any hassle at Paris airport. For the TM6, they ask for the return date—what should I put? My actual return date? The website doesn’t give me the option to upload my exit ticket from Thailand. Thanks!

Short-stay visa convertible to long-stay for family reunification
Hello, We’ll soon be moving to Madagascar long-term. As a French national, I need to obtain a short-stay visa that can be converted to a long-stay one. To do this, I have to send the required documents to the Madagascar embassy in Paris. No issues with that procedure so far. If I get this visa, once I arrive in Madagascar, I’ll need to provide the same documents to the Ministry of the Interior in Anosy. I’m trying to find an email address or website for the Ministry to check which documents I need to submit (I think they ask for additional ones). If you have any info on this, I’d appreciate your replies. Best regards, M. Buisson Eric

Newfoundland - Hikes in the Western Part of the Island
INTRODUCTION

Trip taken in 2021, but still relevant for exploring the island of Newfoundland.

We went on multiple hikes in this Canadian province, which offers a unique and breathtaking landscape.

GPS coordinates: 46.20884, -60.24498 Marine Atlantic Ferry

To do this, we traveled to North Sydney, Nova Scotia, to board a Marine Atlantic ferry that took us to Port aux Basques in Newfoundland. The crossing takes about 7 hours.

The ferry *Highlanders* features spacious cabins for two or four people, a restaurant, a retail store, and a play area for kids.

The reclining seats are comfortable and include a headphone jack and a USB charging port.

We went out on the open-air panoramic observation deck several times to admire the Atlantic Ocean, hoping to spot some marine wildlife. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any.

This short video gives you an overview of the facilities. For more details, I invite you to check out Marine Atlantic’s website at the following address: https://www.marineatlantique.ca/.

Good place for one night in Delhi
Hi fellow travelers! I arrive in New Delhi on January 5th, and this is the third time I’ve come across what turns out to be a scam (after some research outside of booking.com): dirty places, fake reviews, etc. So I’m starting to distrust booking.com because it really doesn’t seem like a reliable site (at least when it comes to booking hotels in New Delhi).

If you have a good place to stay (max 1500 € per night, and I don’t want a dorm) in New Delhi, I’d love to hear about it! :)

Looking forward to your replies!

ETA Thailand (Electronic Travel Authorization)
Hi, does anyone know the status of the ETA that’s supposed to go into effect in December 2024 (and needs to be requested on the e-visa portal www.thaievisa.go.th)? Is it officially starting on December 1st? I’ve got my flight on the 7th of December and I’m on a Non-O Retirement visa with a re-entry. From what I understand, it’ll only apply to visa-free entries and should allow a 60-day stay in the kingdom with the option to extend for 30 more days. So I’m wondering if I need to apply for this since I already have a valid visa. Thanks in advance for your answers! 😊

All-Inclusive Stay on Roatan Island
HENRY MORGAN HOTEL AND BEACH RESORT

Transfer (half an hour) from the airport to the hotel by minibus. We drop off our suitcases at the airport exit. They are loaded onto another vehicle and transported directly to the hotel, where we pick them up upon arrival.

We’re given our wristbands, two key cards for our room, a remote for the TV, a remote for the air conditioning (ours was already in the room), and a document with a detailed site map and information on restaurant, bar, and other service hours. Reception is open 24 hours.

We got room F3, located on the ground floor of a two-story building. It’s very well situated since it’s in the central part of the resort.

The room has two large beds with super comfortable mattresses, two nightstands, a coffee table with two chairs, two wardrobes, and plenty of storage space.

There’s also a large flat-screen TV. Netflix is included free of charge by the hotel—no subscription required. The safe is also provided at no extra cost.

There’s a mini-fridge, and the housekeeper provides bottles of water. However, it’s suggested to refill the bottles at the water stations by the bar, which we did several times.

The bathroom has a shower, toilet, sink with storage space, a large mirror, a towel rack, a hairdryer, soap, shampoo, and several rolls of toilet paper.

The hot water temperature in the shower varied during our stay. The air conditioning works perfectly.

We have a terrace with a chair and two hammocks.

The room uses 110 volts, and there are a few power outlets in the room.

The buffet restaurant is air-conditioned and open from 7 AM to 10 AM for breakfast, 12 PM to 3 PM for lunch, and 6 PM to 8:30 PM for dinner.

The buffet selection is very varied, and the food is delicious. The wine, both white and red, tastes great. The service is exceptional.

There’s also an à la carte restaurant ($), the Gastro Bar & Winery, open from 11 AM to 10 PM. We didn’t go there.

There’s a snack bar open from 11 AM to 1 PM and 3 PM to 5 PM, but I can’t comment on it since we didn’t visit.

We only went to the lobby bar near the showroom, which is open from 9:30 AM to 11 PM. The staff is very friendly, and the service is excellent.

Beer is served in cans but poured into a glass, and a wide variety of cocktails is available.

Beach towels are placed in our room upon arrival. There’s a kiosk near the main pool where you can exchange them.

There are two pools on-site. Many lounge chairs are arranged around both pools. If you prefer tranquility, I suggest heading to the pool between blocks A and B.

This hotel is located on the stunning public West Bay Beach, which is long and very pretty. It’s great for walking, and the sea color is remarkable.

There are plenty of lounge chairs on the beach, but there’s very little space between them.

There’s a long coral reef near the beach where you can observe beautiful corals and several species of tropical fish, lobsters, squid, leopard rays, turtles, etc. You’ll get a glimpse of these in an upcoming video.

Activities are offered throughout the day, but we didn’t really participate. I can’t comment on them, but the entertainment team seems very dynamic.

During our stay, there was only one evening dance show. Other days featured activities like bingo, karaoke, and games.

We didn’t go to the nightclub.

Wi-Fi is available for free throughout the resort. There are two networks you can connect to, and the passwords are listed in the brochure given to you upon arrival.

There’s also a gym, a spa ($), a boutique ($), and a winery ($).

Check-out is at 11 AM. If you lose or damage equipment or misplace key cards, you’ll be charged fees.

For the most part: the stunning landscapes, the natural kindness of the locals, their cuisine, and their culture—you’ll get to enjoy all of that once you’re there... Flight (arrival and departure to/from Cochin) Avoid Air India and opt for flights via the Middle East: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, etc. Price: between 500 € and 600 € Accommodations Average price: 20 € per night for a couple (max: 40 €, min: 10 €, often including breakfast), via the usual booking sites. Toyota sedan (e.g., Corolla) for 4 travelers (1 in front, 3 in the back): 50 € / day, Toyota SUV (e.g., Innova) for up to 6 travelers: 60 € / day DM me if you’d like more details.
