Is it risky to walk around Rio alone?
Hi Cannelle,
In October 2025, we took a trip to Brazil that was somewhat similar to the one you're planning. We stayed in Rio for 6 days in the neighborhood near the Cathedral. We didn’t feel unsafe despite all the warnings we’d heard. We got around by bus, tram, metro, and Uber.
After that, we took a bus to Ilha Grande, Paraty, and São Paulo.
We also flew round-trip from São Paulo to Iguazu and don’t speak Portuguese either.
Have a great trip!

Storm in the Canary Islands
Hi,
Thanks for your travel journal about the Canary Islands. I really felt the vibe of El Hierro, where we’ve stayed twice already. Gran Canaria is supposed to be our next destination—hopefully we’ll have better weather!
Best,
Aline
Gran Canaria... a trip that wasn't really exciting
Hi,
Thanks for sharing your travel journal. You didn’t have much luck—what a shame. Gran Canaria is the only Canary Island we haven’t visited "yet." But it won’t be long now.
Best,
Aline
A week in Lanzarote at the end of September
Hi,
Thanks for this report on this wonderful island.
Self-sufficient stopovers in the Canary Islands and Madeira
Hi Martine,
We spent two weeks in Madeira this summer. Exploring downtown Funchal is easy on foot: the Sé Cathedral, the Mercado dos Lavradores (Monday to Friday), and the Fort of São Tiago (also open on weekdays). Two cable cars provide access to gardens, the Jardim Botânico and the Monte Palace Garden. Camara de Lobos port is easily reachable by bus. A bit farther, about twenty kilometers away, the small coastal town of Ribeira Brava is served by bus 7, and its ethnographic museum is fascinating. Depending on your interests, in Funchal you can also discover the Sacred Art Museum and the museum dedicated to Ronaldo.
As for the Canary Islands, where we’ve stayed several times on Tenerife, La Palma, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, here are a few suggestions:
Santa Cruz de Tenerife, you can explore the city center on foot, including the municipal market (Nuestra Señora de África), the auditorium, and Plaza de España. But the real highlight is visiting La Laguna. In just half an hour, the L1 tram takes you to this UNESCO World Heritage city.
Santa Cruz de La Palma is also easy to explore on foot. For getting around the island, here’s a link to the public transport website: https://www.tilp.es/cogerlaguagua/?fwp_origen=santa-cruz
In Puerto del Rosario, there isn’t much to see in the city itself. However, the salt flats to the south, Las Salinas, offer a lovely setting and can be reached by bus: https://tiadhe.com/en/line-03/. On the west coast, the village of Puertito de los Molinos is picturesque but isn’t served by public transport, so you’ll need to rent a car.
Finally, Arrecife is very pleasant, with the Charco de San Ginés, the Castillo de San Gabriel, and the charming streets and squares of the historic center. But on this island (my favorite), there’s so much to do and see—the Timanfaya Park, everything related to César Manrique, the lava fields, the caves...
What time of year will you be traveling?
Best regards, Aline

Your opinions on the ARANUI 5 cruise to the Marquesas Islands
Hello Marie-Chrisine,
We had acupuncture-point bracelets. We didn’t get sick.
It’s true that sometimes things move around. One evening at dinner, our table was "cleared" in the blink of an eye, and the bottles from the refrigerated cellar turned into bowling pins.
Best regards,
Aline
Your reviews on the ARANUI 5 cruise to the Marquesas Islands
Hi Marie-Chrisine,
We had our own masks and snorkels. But I think it was possible to borrow them on the boat.
As for the excursions, we only took part in the ones included in the package—nothing optional was offered, as far as I remember. There were only about a hundred passengers.
Best regards,
Aline
Your thoughts on the ARANUI 5 cruise to the Marquesas Islands
Hello Marie Christine,
We took this cruise 4 years ago. It was in July 2021. French Polynesia had just reopened after the lockdown that had halted navigation open to tourists.
Passengers were roughly divided into three groups: 1/3 Polynesians or residents, 1/3 from mainland France, and 1/3 foreigners. The atmosphere was very relaxed and warm. In French Polynesia, using first names ("tu") is the norm.
We took part in all the excursions and hikes and had packed the right shoes for them.
For landings, we usually docked directly, but we also used longboats and once a barge to reach a beach. For that outing, we had water-friendly shoes.
I’m happy to share more details, even though our trip took place during a unique time.
Best regards,
Aline

Budget for Tanzania with a safari
Hi David,
We visited the parks in Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Natron, Manyara, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, and Ndutu.
And in Zanzibar, we spent four days in Stone Town and four days in Jambiani.
I’m happy to help if you need anything else,
Best regards,
Aline
Budget for Tanzania with a safari
Hi Amandine,
How old are your kids, and how long would your trip be?
We went to Tanzania in February 2024—two weeks in the northern region around Arusha and one week in Zanzibar.
We flew with Kenyan Airlines with a layover in Nairobi. We extended that layover to a full day and hired a guide for 8 hours to visit Nairobi National Park as a little preview.
I’m happy to share more details about our trip if you’d like.
Best,
Aline
