Why do we always think that "ELSEWHERE" is better than our own country?

Hello,

To refocus the discussion on the topic and accommodate everyone’s rainy constraints during this dreary, damp winter, I suggest we clarify the question:

Why is this tendency to see the grass as greener elsewhere so French? What does it stem from? A cultural atavism, a worldview, a type of society?...

Michel

Hello. Thank you for picking up the thread I started, Jupiteria. The French often take pride in defending their little patch of land, their region, their country, etc., believing—somewhat vainly—that the advantages of this societal structure will make their lives better, though not necessarily more enthusiastic, as we all know.

I’d like to move past the clichés and narrow-minded views of those who, too grounded in reality, only consider the purely material and profitable side of a DESIRE FOR ELSEWHERE. Let’s get back to what truly matters, but from a completely different perspective—one that suggests this ELSEWHERE could be a return to our roots, a stripping away of the self, a conscious way of living that recognizes the importance of what’s essential for the survival of the hu…man… species!!!! After all, we’ve come to understand the futility and absurdity of all the psychological prisons we’ve built, which are supposedly leading us to a "successful" life… yet few are truly convinced or convincing about this ideology when HUMANS NATURALLY IGNORE ONE ANOTHER in the most basic ways—starving, destroying, exploiting each other in a dizzying system designed for the wealth of a few! France or not France, it’s the same everywhere!

So yes! It’s a challenge to broaden our horizons in search of "something better elsewhere." By that, I mean countries where modernism and egocentrism haven’t yet corrupted people and cities—places where, though we might be poorer, we’d be freer in our minds. Where respect, simplicity, and sharing complete the circle in wonderful glances and smiles, even if we still have to go about our daily tasks, but with a lighter heart. Yes, I cling to this idea of elsewhere, even knowing they’ll envy me for having known France… and yet, I’d tell them that the sweetness of life isn’t where they think it is, that true values are found and passed on through authenticity, and that materialism has sown bad seeds.

Ah! What a utopia you must think… and how I understand you… but green grass—or less green grass—grows everywhere ELSEWHERE… and I’ll be content with little as long as I’m free. To wrap up, thousands of French people leave and live abroad, never to return! We’d love to hear from them on this forum.

Bonne Vacance!

Hello. And I still haven’t changed my mind......except that the idea of leaving for abroad is haunting my mind even more now! Oh, the most beautiful country in the world, France, well, not for me either. That would be a pretty narrow view of the world’s beauty. French-style chauvinism, I guess! It’s hard to make people understand that you can’t worship France, love it, and still want to stay—another odd and strangely limited perspective! A country rich in history, with undeniable heritage and cultural treasures, I’ll admit, and one that would do well to keep us hooked just like that! But no! I still dream of that *elsewhere*, and I fully intend to leave this arrogant one in its delusion of perfection.....because there’s so much to say about that too! Goodbye grayness and gloomy faces, hello to you, foreign lands, in your bright attire that makes life so simple and sweet.

Opinions can be negative... but that’s also because we step out of our comfort zone!!! Preferring other places isn’t about blind negativity or being anti-France—it’s about the experience that shows us there’s also good, beauty, and everything in between in different contexts that can absolutely charm us. Let’s move past French chauvinism...!!! and the stifling idea that you *have* to live in your own country to fit some "normal" mold. There’s nothing negative about it—it’s just the mindset of those who choose to believe it!

You’ve completely lost it...... Oh help.....!!!! Stop convincing yourself that you’re the only one who knows, who can do, who understands.... You’re "off-topic," and you’re teaching us NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that’s useful, intelligent, or helps move the conversation forward on a topic you’ve UNDERSTOOD NOTHING about! You’re stuck in moralizing judgment, stating the obvious, and a narrow-mindedness I don’t agree with, that’s all. I won’t respond to your messages anymore—"you’re not worth the time"—and also out of respect for those who actually wanted to share their thoughts on the original topic. THE END.

Hello everyone,

But yes, but yes... it's back-to-school time!!! My Chilean friend, I'd love to set my suitcases down again in San Pedro, or even in the Elqui Valley—there’s so much to say... and to dream about... by the shore of a lake. Best regards, Jupiteria

SHOCKED.....OH THE POOR THING!!!

I wasn’t wrong after all about what I sensed regarding your first ramblings... I never asked for anyone’s OPINION or advice—REREAD the original idea carefully... which, up to now, hasn’t caused any problems for anyone. On the contrary.... check the history and learn......!!!!! The "ELSEWHERE" that may not be familiar to you gives me a taste of freedom, curiosity, opens doors, and broadens the mind—we keep growing instead of just sticking to what we know and what’s certain. But that must be beyond you....!!! Grab your little backpack and explore our beautiful France.... and don’t think you have to dictate to others what they’ve already learned or done. I think you’re on the wrong FORUM—"travelers’ thoughts and philosophical reflections!!!" You’re a troublemaker looking for controversy. REREAD YOURSELF.... there’s nothing more foolish than someone who thinks they know but doesn’t.... BOOM! As for the psychiatric asylum—"very worrying that you used such a word! You must know about it...!" To conclude, calm your nerves, and if you’re shocked, too bad for your ego. I find it a shame that your attitude has polluted such a great starting idea for all travelers. I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU. A thousand apologies to everyone reading this. Jupiteria.

No need for your backpacking advice about France..... Who do you think you are...!!! And with your two-bit criticisms on this forum, it wasn’t even worth writing such long posts just to vent your frustrations on everyone’s opinions. We all have the right—and THE DUTY—to express ourselves freely, so keep your JUDGMENTS to yourself—WE DON’T CARE....... Why don’t you set down *your* backpack for a bit.... it looks heavy to carry...!!! Probably the weight of your stupidity.

Hey Pierre-Yv,

Even though I like your take, I still want to point out that there isn’t just one "elsewhere"—there are countless. As Le Chat put it, "elsewhere" is everywhere except here. When you live in France, for example, you just have to go to another European country to be somewhere else, without necessarily rushing off to the poorest countries on the planet. And why couldn’t things be better elsewhere? In some cases, the job market might be kinder, the healthcare system more efficient, the bureaucracy less overwhelming—sometimes all of that can even come together. And then, that "elsewhere" you visited for a trip can feel really appealing...

Totally agree with you...!!!! France isn’t "wonderland."

Hi, Moving abroad for sunshine! That’s one "ELSEWHERE" that makes sense....!!! Good luck to you. Still, I wanted to point out that in many other countries, women experience the same things we do in France—but there’s still a lot to improve regarding women’s conditions, even in France. Best regards.

As soon as I return to France, I catch myself thinking, "it’s better elsewhere." Wherever we’ve been, I feel this lightness of living—less restriction, less pressure, less sadness—and I start dreaming of somewhere else, of living somewhere else, a simpler life, more authentic, with colors everywhere: markets, clothes, homes...!!! Meeting kindred spirits, genuine people, gentle and kind, and letting go of all this modernism, this technological rat race, the indifference toward others, the confinement, the racism against the elderly in France, against the poor, the weak, the beautiful... fleeing the news, politics, jealousy, meanness, stupidity, greed... And in my moments of clarity, I tell myself that every country, every city has its pros and cons, and that maybe the best of all worlds isn’t down here. But I also remind myself that you have to know how to COME BACK in order to LEAVE again... yet still...!!! IS IT REALLY BETTER ELSEWHERE?😏😏😏
