Questions about planning an itinerary in Lombok
by Lolodesiles · 2026-02-08 · 0 replies
I saw there's a local boat to Lombok—has anyone taken it before?

Hi! The public ferry leaves from Padangbai and arrives in Lembar, on the southwest of Lombok, so it’s perfect for heading straight to Gili Gede. That said, if you’re arriving at the end of June, I’d suggest starting with Gili Meno before the crowds arrive. There are direct speedboats between Bali and the three northern Gilis, but they’re way more expensive than the public ferry, which docks in the south.

For those who’ve been there around this time, do you know if Gili Meno and Gili Gede get really crowded, or should we focus on the coasts instead?

Gili Gede is quiet. Meno, on the other hand, might be busier since the three northern Gilis are much more well-known and touristy (though Meno’s still my favorite of the three because it’s relatively peaceful). From what I’ve heard, there’s now a speedboat route from Gili Meno to Gili Gede (via Trawangan).

To get between different spots, are there buses, or do we have to take private taxis?

The only bus on Lombok runs from the airport to Mataram—nothing else. It’s either private taxis or scooters.

For accommodations, we’re used to booking triple rooms for the four of us in Thailand. For those traveling with kids, do you know if that’s doable in Indonesia, or should we book two double rooms instead?

I don’t have much experience with that, but extra beds are definitely an option here.

Last question—maybe a silly one—but we’re going to Indonesia because our son dreams of seeing beautiful marine life while snorkeling. I think Lombok’s the right choice, but my daughter’s a huge fan of those "cheap trinket markets" you find all over Thailand. Do you know if Lombok has any day or night markets where we could check those out?

Gili Gede is *definitely* a great choice for marine life (the best spots are Gili Layar, Ringgit, and Asahan, which you can only reach by boat from Gede). I’ve listed the best snorkeling spots here (in my opinion):
https://www.lombok.fr/plus-beaux-fonds-marins/ If you have time, the southeast of Lombok is also great for diving. As for local markets, they’re mostly food-focused, but Indonesians love those same trinkets too, so you’ll find some—just not with a huge selection. I’m not a fan of shopping, so there might be better spots in Mataram or Senggigi that I don’t know about.
Issue with booking domestic flights on Lion Air
by Lolodesiles · 2026-01-22 · 0 replies
hi there I’ve been using the Traveloka app for years for all domestic flights, no matter the airline, and it works really well. Traveloka also has a classic website version, and it’s by far the most popular booking platform in Indonesia—they even have big billboards in the airports. Until recently, you could even check in through Traveloka, but lately, Lion Air has been pushing us to use their own app: Book Cabin. Last time (earlier this month), I had to download it to check in because nothing worked—neither on Traveloka nor on the Lion Air website. Lion Air and Wings Air are the same company: Lion for the big planes, Wings for the small ones. Loic

Your thoughts on Gili Gede for snorkeling and hotels
by Lolodesiles · 2026-01-20 · 0 replies
Hello

Gili Gede is a very pretty, very peaceful island, perfect for short hikes (or rather, strolls), but it’s not large enough to have waterfalls or rice fields—you’ll need to head to Lombok at the foot of Rinjani for that.

Also, snorkeling from the beach isn’t the best, so it’d be a shame to visit Gili Gede without renting a boat to explore the marine life around Gili Rengit and Gili Layar, which, in my opinion, are among the best diving spots in Lombok. Think of Gili Gede as a great base for exploring the archipelago on day-long boat trips, rather than a standalone destination.

Personally, I stayed at a small homestay (3-4 rooms), Homestay Pelangi: the owner could organize boat trips, and his wife was an amazing cook. I’m speaking in the past tense because this was about 5-6 years ago, but based on Google reviews, the homestay is still open.

Cruise around the Komodo Islands
by Lolodesiles · 2026-01-20 · 2 replies
Hi there, Thanks for this lovely story. I went to Komodo about fifteen years ago, and I also negotiated directly with a fisherman at Labuanbajo port. It was very basic—no comfort (nights on the boat deck or sleeping under the stars on the islands with no monitor lizards around), but I have great memories of it. However, back then, I didn’t know about Padar Island, and that’s one of the reasons I’m motivated to go back.

My concern is that this kind of "rough-and-ready" trip no longer exists, given how much tourism has developed in the last 15 years. It seems like you now have to go through local tour operators, with a very high budget.

So, I’d be really happy to get the link to that site—not because I’m looking to relive the exact same experience, but more in the hope of finding something financially affordable.

Thanks a lot! Loic

hi

I also found the announcement of François's passing a bit rushed, so this clarification is welcome. I completely understand your SOS and sympathize. What a shock to discover this terrible news... VF changed my life 20 years ago by introducing me to people who truly resonate with me—many have become friends I still see today. I also found François’s stance during the health crisis courageous and honorable, refusing to turn VF into a platform promoting coercive measures. Finally, thanks to François, I’ve gathered tons of information here to plan my trips. There are definitely destinations I wouldn’t have dared or thought to visit if VF didn’t exist.

Thank you, François, for everything. I hope a successor will be found to continue your work in the spirit you created it.

Safe travels. Loic

si votre vol part d'un aéroport situé dans l'UE à destination d'un pays hors UE et est assuré par une compagnie aérienne établie dans l'UE ou en dehors de l'UE;

Merci

Location de scooter Sulawesi, Toggians ou Banggai?
by Lolodesiles · 2019-12-26 · 1 reply
Bonjour
