The idea is no more than 2–3 hours of driving per day on average. Hi there, I’m planning a family trip (my wife and I, both 47, and our two sons, aged 5 and 12) to Malaysia for the last week of June and the first two weeks of July 2027. We used to love road trips as a couple, then as a trio, but since our second child arrived, we’ve taken a break with "camping village" style trips. We’ve been lucky enough to visit Thailand, Indonesia (Bali and Lombok), and Sri Lanka before. Friends have raved about Malaysia, so we’re definitely tempted.

My plan: - Take a boat from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales (4-5 days) - Torres del Paine National Park (2-3 days) - Bus from Puerto Natales to Ushuaïa (1-2 days) - Exploring around Ushuaïa (3-4 days) - Cruise from Ushuaïa to Punta Arenas (Oct 31 - Nov 4) - Rent a vehicle and head back up to Puerto Montt by around December 10, which is about 35 days total, via Los Glaciares, El Chaltén, Patagonia NP, Caleta Tortel, Villa O’Higgins, Puerto Río Tranquilo, Bahía Exploradores, Cerro Castillo NP, Coyhaique, Queulat NP, Chaitén, Pumalín NP, and Hornopirén NP.

My goal is to enjoy nature and do some hiking.

I’ll be in Torres del Paine around October 20—is the weather manageable for day hikes at that time?

30-35 days from Punta Arenas to Puerto Montt? That’s about 3,600 km. Is this timeframe doable to enjoy the scenery without rushing? If I arrive in the north earlier, it’s no big deal—I’ll just explore more spots above Puerto Montt.

Now, about the vehicle... I’m torn between a car + tent (regular car with a tent on top) and a small van. Is this enough for the Carretera Austral or unpaved roads? Or would a 4x4 be better? I’m not an experienced 4x4 driver—I’ve only driven occasionally to give the main driver a break on easy sections. A van is tempting for the comfort. Are there any rental options for slightly modified cars or ones where you can sleep, like a Kangoo?

Hello, We’d like to spend a week in Luxor and Aswan in February. I’d asked a tour operator to organize the trip for us, but I think it’s way too expensive for what’s included. So I’m going to try to plan it myself, and with your help if you don’t mind. We’re 76 and 77 years old and in good shape, but I doubt we’ll be getting up at 6 a.m. every day. I bought a paper guidebook, but I haven’t read it all yet. We arrive on a Saturday at 5 p.m. and leave the following Saturday at 6 p.m. Here’s what I’d like to do: The first three days in Luxor: - Valley of the Kings: 3 tombs + Seti I and Ramses VI, and Hatshepsut; see the Colossi of Memnon along the way. Ramesseum??? First question: How much time do we need for this? I can’t figure it out. Can we see anything else the same day without feeling overwhelmed or too tired?

- Karnak Temple: Should we start with it or with Luxor Temple? How much time for both? Sound and light show in the evening? Or just Luxor Temple illuminated? Can the Avenue of Sphinxes be seen separately?

- Valley of the Nobles (2 combined tickets), Artisans’ Village, and Medinet Habu: Same question—how much time? Can we see anything else?

No one ever talks about lunch or going back to visit in the afternoon. Is it too hot? I saw there are one or two small restaurants near the temples—do you know any? Or is it better to go back to Luxor?

What’s a fair price for a taxi for a day like this? We’ll probably stay on the East Bank.

- Day 4: Then we’d like to go to Aswan, stopping at Edfu and Kom Ombo along the way. I’ve seen prices around 140 € for a private car with a driver.

- Day 5: Unfortunately, no matter how I rearrange the days, we’ll only have one day for Abu Simbel. I’ve seen prices around 140–150 €. I don’t plan on getting up at 3 a.m.—what time should we leave so it’s not too bad? We won’t have much time to explore Aswan after two days on the road plus a third to return to Luxor.

- Day 6: Philae Temple—I’ve read a lot of comments saying it’s a madhouse to get the boat. How much should we pay to avoid haggling for hours??? How much time for the visit? Return to Luxor—I was tempted to take the train, but so far I’ve only seen options very early in the morning. The price is also around 150 €. - Day 7: In Luxor, since our flight leaves at 6 p.m., I thought we’d visit the Luxor Museum. Does this itinerary seem reasonable? Is there another way to organize it? Of course, if you know drivers who offer good rates, I’m interested—but I want a good driver who doesn’t drive too fast, a car with AC and in good condition for the long trips (we’re not 20 anymore). Back in 2002, we spent two weeks in Playa del Carmen. We did day trips to Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Chichén Itzá, Tulum, and Xcaret.

We’re heading back at Christmas with our two daughters, aged 15 and 19. I’m sure it’s changed a lot with the booming tourism.

Flights are booked: Paris-Cancún on 19/12 (arriving at 8:20 PM) and Cancún-Paris on 01/01 at 1:30 PM. We’re still finalizing the itinerary because we want to explore but don’t want to switch hotels too often. We’ll be there for 13 nights and 12 days, so we’re choosing among: - Playa del Carmen - Cozumel - Holbox - Valladolid - Tulum - Mahahual

We won’t do everything, so any tips would be great! I’m also unsure if renting a car is the best option.

I’m in the middle of planning our trip to Croatia. We’re arriving in early September for a week in Split and leaving from Split as well. We’re a couple with a 20-month-old little girl. We’re renting a car directly at the airport, which I still need to book (I have a GOLD debit card). I hope that won’t be an issue because, logically, with this card, I shouldn’t need to take out extra insurance from the rental company. If you have any recommendations on that, I’d love to hear them.

As for the itinerary I’m planning, I’ve already ruled out Plitvice and Zadar because we don’t want to spend too much time on the road—this is a vacation, after all—and some travelers told me Zadar can be seen quickly and isn’t worth the long drive. For the nights, someone already suggested we spend the last two in Trogir to consolidate.

I particularly love beautiful towns, historic centers, ports, taking photos, shopping, beaches, and seeing stunning places. We’re not big on museums, and hiking with a little one makes long or steep hikes tricky, especially with the heat we might encounter.

Here’s the initial plan I’ve come up with:

Day 1:

Activities: Arrive in Split in the morning, pick up the car, explore the historic center, Marjan Hill... Klis Fortress, and see what else we can add before evening. Night: Initially planned near Plitvice (2 min away).

Day 2:

Activities: Day at Plitvice—check out Entrance 1 or 2 with the baby. Night: Lozovac (2 min from Krka, 16 min from Šibenik, and 1 hour from Zadar).

Day 3: Activities: Zadar and Šibenik. Night: Lozovac (2 min from Krka, 16 min from Šibenik, and 1 hour from Zadar).

Day 4: Activities: Krka National Park (someone recommended going after 4 PM and seeing the "circular" waterfalls) + Primošten. Night: Lozovac (2 min from Krka, 16 min from Šibenik, and 1 hour from Zadar).

Day 5: Activities: Hvar (exploring the island). Night: Jelsa.

Day 6: Activities: Omiš + Starigrad Fortress. Night: Omiš.

Day 7: Activities: Trogir city center, Čiovo Island. Night: Trogir.

I haven’t updated the plan yet because I’m still looking for the best way to optimize it. Someone suggested Makarska and Brač as alternatives to Plitvice.

Given that I’m already planning to visit Hvar with an overnight stay, is it worth adding Brač? If so, maybe taking the ferry without the car—would we still be able to enjoy the day without being too limited? Did I forget anything essential? Thanks in advance—I know answering all these questions can be repetitive, but it’ll save me so much time and help optimize our vacation. I also like to take my time and enjoy being there rather than stressing over preparations, which is why I’m planning just enough. What’s most important to me is optimizing the route and staying in places that let us explore easily. I think we’ll come back another time to enjoy Dubrovnik, which we didn’t include in this itinerary because it’s over two hours away with a border crossing.

We’re heading to Sri Lanka for three weeks in July with two kids (ages 6 and 13). We’ve drafted a rough itinerary but would love to hear from those who’ve already been there 😊 Of course, we want to see everything, but we have to make choices—even though three weeks on the ground lets us do quite a bit. We originally planned a schedule that felt too packed, so we had to cut one stop. We decided to skip Tangalle, even though we were really tempted. The monsoon won’t let us swim there, and the weather in the south is too uncertain, so we preferred to keep our stops on the east coast. Plus, we don’t think it’s reasonable to cut nights from other places. We’ve added a stop in Batticaloa, which we think will be a nice break between Arugam Bay and Sigiriya. What do you think? We’re also debating between Batticaloa and Passikudah. Does the itinerary seem logical to you?

Hi everyone, I’m reaching out today to gather some great tips for the second part of our trip to South Africa, which will take place from 03/21 to 04/11. We don’t want to rush too much either. We’ll start in Cape Town (tickets already booked) since it seems like a good time to visit this region—except for the whales in Hermanus, which we won’t be seeing. Oh, and I almost forgot, we’re renting a car for both legs of the trip for more freedom.

The first part is planned like this:

- 03/21: Arrival in Cape Town, staying until 03/24 - 03/25: Visit to the Cape, including a stop in Simon’s Town - 2 nights in Stellenbosch from 03/26 to 03/28 - 3 nights in Knysna to explore the area from 03/28 to 03/31 - 03/31: Flight from Port Elizabeth to Durban, where we’ll spend one night in Umhlanga

After that, I’m a bit lost 🙂. Next, I was thinking of doing:

2 nights in St. Lucia 2 nights in Eswatini 4 nights in Kruger Park (2 nights in Skukuza and 2 nights in Balule to visit a private reserve) 1 night at Blyde Canyon 1 night somewhere to get closer to Johannesburg (Graskop?) since we’ll need to return the car by around 11:00 AM on 04/11.

It’s great to be back on the forum and reconnecting with fellow travelers... even though it’s true there’s a big gap in recent trip reports, making it tough to find up-to-date info, POST-COVID....

So, I’m jumping in... We (a couple in our forties—yikes, when did that happen?!) are heading there for 21 days in March. I’ve put together a rough itinerary based on what I’ve found here and elsewhere, and most importantly, our shared interests. We travel pretty low-key with backpacks, aren’t big on beaches or surfing, and prefer hiking, nature, and meaningful human connections (which means we don’t like to rush too much).

We love snorkeling/diving, but we’ve already seen some incredible spots around the world, and Corn Islands seem beautiful... but not necessarily *more* beautiful than what we’ve already experienced. Plus, the round-trip flight + boat was pretty far and expensive, so we’re probably skipping it for now.

Here’s where I’m at: Day 0: Arrive in Managua late at night → stay near the airport Day 1: Private taxi from the hotel to León. Explore León Day 2: Hike and surf Cerro Negro + El Hoyo, camp overnight Day 3: Return to León and explore more Day 4-5: Telica (probably stay near Managua on Day 5?) Day 6: Travel to San Carlos + El Castillo Day 7-10: El Castillo + Indio Maiz Day 11: Travel to Ometepe (this day looks like a real challenge... going around the north side of the lake is super long, and via the south and Costa Rica seems much easier, but I can’t figure out how to do it... any tips or ideas are welcome!!!) Day 12-17: Ometepe: volcano hikes, Charco Verde Reserve, waterfalls, scooter tour, and *pura vida* relaxation (this is the main reason we’re coming to Nicaragua, after all...) Day 18: Travel to Granada Day 19-21: Granada (stay near Managua airport on the 21st) Day 22: Return flight at 11:30 AM

7 days in OMAN Day 1: Muscat for a few hours to gather info on diving near the Dimaniyat Islands. Then a tour of the souks and the corniche. The next day, we dropped our diving plans to focus on a "landscapes" vacation.

Day 2: Headed to the mountains with a picnic stop at Nakhal Fort (so renovated it feels like Disney, but really beautiful). In the afternoon, Maps led us astray on rocky paths—we got a flat, and by the time we fixed it, it was dark. We slept near WADI DAMM. Luckily, we stumbled upon a farm stay in the middle of nowhere, right by the wadi for the next day. We found a café selling amazing dhal with bread—but no utensils!—and a small shop for tea and pastries for the next morning. Day 3: WADI DAMM, a long hike up a canyon—gorgeous but very dry. On the way to Oman’s highest mountains, JEBEL SHAMS! But what Maps said would take 1.5 hours turned into hours on off-road trails. We arrived at the top at 4 PM—stunning, but the sun was already low. We hiked for 30 minutes along the corniche and turned back (Balcony Walk). We drove down to Al Hamra as night fell and found a cute hotel where the guy cooked us an incredible chicken. Day 4: Visited MISFAH, an old mountain village. We descended into the wadi and climbed up the other side for the view—absolutely breathtaking! *** Headed to NIZWA for its fort and souk—nice! Apparently, you should visit Friday morning for the camel market (to be confirmed).

Day 5: Headed to the desert, but first, a stop at WADI BANI KHALIL (great hike, even with crowds). The sandwich on the rocks and the swim before leaving were awesome. We reached the sand desert, left the car, and were taken to camp—just us and two young guys serving tea and meals. So beautiful! The walk around the camp in the dunes was fun, the photos were amazing—overall, a fantastic experience!

Day 6: Walked around the desert near camp after breakfast—gorgeous! They drove us back to the car, then we stopped at a shop for a picnic at WADI SHAB. Crossed by boat, but the hike afterward was great—had to swim in some spots, so bring a dry bag. Found a nice guesthouse by the sea nearby and a restaurant in Tiwi since it was already late.

Day 7: After a failed swimming attempt (the waves were too strong), we went to WADI TIWI—nothing special. Then WADI ARBEIEEN as we headed up the coast to the airport, where we crashed for 6 hours at a hotel before flying home!

Hi everyone, I’m a die-hard fan of India, but it’s time I discovered Thailand too to broaden my Asian horizons. I’m heading there on January 19, 2025, for a 46-day trip (no visa needed as I’m French). I’ve pored over a few guidebooks and travel blogs. Based on what caught my interest, I’ve put together a rough itinerary and list of sights. But since I know absolutely nothing about Thailand, I’m kind of flying blind here. Since I’m not exactly a spring chicken anymore, I’ve opted for a few bases where I’ll stay several days in the same place. That way, I won’t have to change locations and hotels every day or so, packing and unpacking my suitcase constantly. Instead, I plan to explore the surrounding area each day, within a maximum radius of 50 to 70 km. So, first question: Is that kind of round-trip distance manageable in a day in Thailand? In India, renting a car for a day—with a driver—currently costs around 35 to 40 € per day. Knowing that 1,300 to 1,500 THB would be my absolute max, and even then, only if I don’t rent a car every single day. Which brings me to my second question: Am I being unrealistic? Otherwise—third question—once I’m settled in the city I’ve chosen as my base, can I get around within that 50–70 km radius using public transport? I’ve already booked all my hotels—with free cancellation—on booking.com at an average price of 950/1,000 THB per night. Does that put me in a good range for value for money? Or am I dreaming?

I’m planning our upcoming family trip to China in August 2025—two adults, two kids (11 and 13), and a one-year-old baby.

As I organize the trip, I’d love your advice. Here’s my itinerary: - Arrival in Beijing on 02/08, staying until 07/08 (five days) to visit the city’s must-see spots without rushing too much with the baby. - After that, either by train or plane, we’ll head to Shenzhen for four days to explore the city and enjoy some attractions with the kids. - Then, Yangshuo for three days to relax a bit from the city hustle and visit the Li River and its surroundings. I haven’t looked into transportation from Shenzhen yet, but I think it’s easily accessible. - Our last day in China will be in Guangzhou (Canton). If possible, I’d like to visit the Huangteng Gorge Skywalk on the same day, or add an extra day for it. I don’t want to do a private tour because it’s extremely expensive, so any great tips combining train/taxi are welcome.

My partner and I are heading to Japan for the first time from mid-December to mid-January for 31 days. It’s a long-held dream we’ve been saving for over two years, and we want to enjoy ourselves while also being mindful of our budget for parts of the trip. We’d love to explore Tokyo, but we’ve chosen to spend more time in nature. My partner plans to get his driver’s license translated locally so we can rent a car. We’ve heard from friends who’ve been that Japan isn’t the best place for improvisation, so we’ve tried to allow plenty of time in each location to avoid rushing. Still, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary we’ve planned—whether it’s feasible in terms of travel and how interesting it seems. Given the recent increase in the JR Pass price and the fact that we’ll spend about ten days on Goto, Ojika, and Yakushima (where the JR Pass doesn’t cover travel), we don’t think it’s worth it for us. Instead, we’re planning to take the train from Tokyo to Fukuoka and then use buses and ferries for the rest of Kyushu. Here’s our itinerary:

1- December 13 / Arrival in Tokyo, one night in Tokyo, then departure for Fukuoka by train on the morning of the 14th.

2 - December 14-16 / 2 nights in Fukuoka, sightseeing, then departure on the evening/night of the 16th by ferry to Ojika Islands.

3 - December 17-21 / 4 nights on Ojika, cycling and exploring, then departure on the 21st by ferry to Fukue on the Goto Islands.

4 - December 21-24 / 3 nights on the Goto Islands, renting a car to explore, maybe a trip to Hisaka. Departure for Nagasaki by ferry on the morning of the 24th.

5- December 24-26 / 2 nights in Nagasaki, visiting the city and memorials, possibly the hot springs in Unzen. Departure on the evening of the 26th by bus or ferry (?) to Kumamoto.

6- December 26-29 / 3 nights in Kumamoto, sightseeing, day trip by car to Mount Aso and surrounding areas. Departure on the 29th in the late afternoon by bus to Kagoshima, overnight in Kagoshima.

7- December 30 to January 2 / Morning departure by ferry to Yakushima for 3 nights, hiking and exploring the island. Departure on January 2 on the only ferry (?) in the early afternoon back to Kagoshima.

8- January 2 to 5 / Uncertain leg... We’d like to spend the night of the 4th to the 5th at a ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen and then head back to Fukuoka and Tokyo by train on the 5th. From the 2nd to the 4th, since we’ll arrive in Kagoshima in the late afternoon, we thought we could head back up to Kumamoto by train or bus—going to Yufuin or Beppu would take much longer and leave us with very little time. But is it worth staying another 2 nights in Kumamoto to explore the area, given we’ll already be there for 3 days from December 26-29? Or should we stay in Kagoshima and head up to Kurokawa Onsen on the afternoon of the 4th for our overnight stay?

9- January 5 to 13, Tokyo and its endless things to do and see, then back to France!

samedi 17 : route tôt vers orta San Giulio. Lac d'orta (5h30) 493km, dejeuner tardif ;parking à l'entrée de la ville. visite village face isola San Giulio. Ascension sacré monte Di orta. . Puis route vers Stresa.30 min, 26 km. nuit à Stresa.

dimanche 18 : iles Borromées, lac Majeur – prendre des tickets pour visiter l'ensemble des îles villas et jardins. Isola Bella puis isola superiore (déjeuner) puis isola madre. nuit à Stresa

Lundi 19 : route vers Menaggio avec visite en route de la ville de Côme. 1h15 de route. Visite de Côme 3h et déjeuner sur place. Puis route vers Lenno 45 min. Arrêt à villa Olmo. Visite du bord du lac. Proximité de l'hôtel. ( ou passage par lac de Lugano avec arrêt shopping store Factory fowtown)? Vous connaissez ce leur de shopping ??

mardi 20 : visite lac de come ( villa del Balbianello. Accès en bateau ou à pied par sentier ) puis villa Carlotta. visite Menaggio en fin de journée.

mercredi 21 : transfert en bateau vers 9h30 vers Bellagio le matin pour visite et dejeuner ( jardin villa melzi, quartier de pescallo et ruelles de Bellagio) , puis l’après midi à Varenna ( village et villa monastero).

jeudi 22 : le matin, route vers Vérone. 3h de route. 200km. Visite Vérone. Puis route vers Sirmione. 40 min. Nuit à Sirmione

vendredi 23 : visite de Sirmione le matin et début après-midi puis retour maison 6h30 de route . 580 km.

Bonjour , je commence a réfléchir a en voyage en Asie Centrale en 2021 ...avril , mai jusqu’à la mi juin soit 2,5 mois . Je pense donc a l’Ouzbékistan , le Tadjikistan , le Kazakhstan et le Kirghizistan ( le Kirghizistan je connais donc secondaire ) Je suis preneur , pour des idées d’itinéraires et d'autres idées si vous en avez . Je recherche une certaine logique dans mes déplacements. merci

pour moi cela dépendra surtout d'un phénomène bien particulier : la possibilité de réserver sur yellowstone sachant, si j ai bien compris, que ceux qui ont du annuler cette année seront prioritaires pour 2021
