I’m planning a trip to Turkey this summer and I’d like to get there by hitchhiking. I’ll be traveling solo, and I’ve already done a lot of hitchhiking (Brazil, Albania, from Paris to Romania with a companion, France, Vietnam, Cambodia, and short distances in India).

Has anyone here already made this trip by hitchhiking? How long did it take you? Which countries were the hardest to find a ride in? What techniques did you use to get rides in places where people don’t usually stop? Have you ever had to pitch your tent on a highway rest area? Have you ever run into any problems?

I’m not worried about hitchhiking in Europe, but I don’t know much about Turkey or its culture. Is hitchhiking something people do there? What about hitchhiking as a solo woman—do cars stop? What should I watch out for in this country?

I’m looking for stories from people who’ve actually had this experience—or at least part of it—not advice from those who’ve never traveled this way or in these countries. Thanks for respecting that!

My question: For entry into Thailand, my passport is valid for more than 6 months (6 months and 6 days). For my exit, my passport’s validity will be 5 months and 14 days. I’m trying to plan a short trip (just under two weeks) to Flores at the end of March, beginning of April, and I’ve got *so* many questions... - **Transport**: From what I’ve gathered, the only flights to Maumere are from Denpasar (or Labuan Bajo), right? Did I get that right? And for getting around the island, I was thinking of hiring a car with a driver for the main routes (we don’t ride motorbikes...). Any idea what the going rate is? And do you have any trusted contacts to recommend? - **Timing**: Even though the best season is later, is the weather still manageable at that time—especially for snorkeling with calm seas and good visibility? - **Komodo archipelago cruise**: I was considering a 3-day, 2-night cruise at the end of the trip, from Labuan Bajo to Komodo. Something comfortable (cabin with private facilities). I saw what Captain Komodo offers on the Alcira—has anyone tried it? Otherwise, any other recommendations?

Yeah, I know it’s a lot of questions! Usually, I travel a bit more spontaneously, but the transport logistics are making me a little nervous—we only have two weeks, so if it takes 5 flights and 3 days of travel just to get to Maumere, we might have to pick a more accessible destination...

In early July, we’re heading to Indonesia for a solid three weeks as a family (my partner and I are in our fifties, and we have two daughters aged 17 and 20). We’ll be arriving and departing from Denpasar. Our itinerary is still entirely up in the air, and we’d like to explore islands other than Bali (we’ve already been there a few years ago).

I’d love to gather your tips and great recommendations to help us plan our route. For now, we’re thinking of visiting Lombok, Flores, and the Komodo archipelago. Here are some of our questions: - I visited Lombok myself back in 1999. I loved it, but I’ve been reading very mixed reviews in recent travel journals. Some are as enthusiastic as I was back then, while others are much more lukewarm (due to the overly strict and visible influence of the island’s governor on the population and because of massive hotel projects—I’m not sure if they’re on hold, underway, or completed). What’s the current situation? Is Lombok still a must-visit? And do you have any tips (hotels, places to visit, health, etc.)? - Still on Lombok, I did the Rinjani trek back then. I remember the hike wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t as tough as what I’ve read in quite a few recent travel journals... My partner and I are in decent shape, but that’s about it, and especially, my partner and our two daughters really don’t like the cold. What’s your experience with this trek? And do you have a trekking agency to recommend? (If we do it, I think we’d want to make sure we have good support, including quality gear, tents, jackets, etc.) - Flores and Komodo would be a completely new experience for all of us. Any tips and recommendations are welcome (sightseeing, accommodations, transport, etc.)! In particular, we’d like to explore the Komodo archipelago with a trusted agency that will take the time to show us the archipelago’s treasures in good conditions (safety and "decent" comfort). Do you know of any such agencies? - Are there other nearby islands you’d recommend? Any advice on places to visit and where to stay?

We’ll have three weeks on the ground... and we like to mix sightseeing with downtime where we just enjoy the moment. So we’re not looking for an overly packed itinerary, but still something rich (no point traveling so far just to lie on a sunbed all day ;-))

Hello, My husband and I are traveling to South Africa in April on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Paris, which means a layover in Ethiopia! Unless I'm mistaken, I just saw that Ethiopia is one of the countries affected by yellow fever. My husband is turning 60, and I also read that the yellow fever vaccine isn't recommended after 60! Could you let me know if I need to collect my luggage when I arrive at Terminal 3 to depart from the same terminal? My travel agency is telling me to pick it up, go through customs, and then check in again for my departure with my luggage. That seems odd to me. Could you confirm whether this is correct or not? We traveled between Christmas and New Year’s to visit our son in San Francisco. We’d already seen the parks during a 2008 vacation but hadn’t had time to drive Highway 1 between San Francisco and Los Angeles, so we decided to do it this time. At this time of year, the days are short—it gets dark by 5 PM, which limits sightseeing time. Weather-wise, we had temperatures between 11°C and 20°C (52°F and 68°F) during the week, so it was pretty pleasant. There was a bit of rain one day and some gray skies or fog in the mornings. Financially, California is *very* expensive! Prices listed don’t include tax or tips. Taxes are automatically added to restaurant bills or supermarket receipts, but *you* add the tip. Americans always leave a tip, no matter if they’re happy with the service or not (except at self-service places). The absolute minimum is 15%, but 20% is more common. Here’s how it works: First, the server brings the bill with the tax already added, then takes your card and the bill. They come back after charging your card, leaving you a new bill and a pen. You write down the tip (tips) you want to leave, add it up, and sign. You leave the paper and pen on the table and go. In some restaurants, the server brings the card reader to your table, and there are preset tip percentages to choose from. On your bank statement, the total amount (including tax) shows up as “pending.” A few days later, the transaction is finalized with the tip included. The 9-hour time difference isn’t trivial, especially as we get older 😉. Keep it in mind when planning—don’t overdo it in the first few days.

Here’s our itinerary: 12/25/2024: Flight from Lyon (7 AM) to San Francisco (11:50 AM): 1-hour layover in Amsterdam—way too tight. The airport is huge, and flights to the U.S. are at the far end. You also have to go through customs. We had to run! Luckily, there’s a special line for tight connections, and our flight was delayed! Reunited with our son and walked to the Painted Ladies (Victorian houses) and then through Alamo Square. Return trip via Waymo—a driverless Uber. Surprising, but the ride was super smooth, and we felt safe.

12/26/2024: San Francisco Walking tour of the city: Lombard Street, Pier 39 (sea lions), Coit Tower via the Filbert Steps (great view of the city), Chinatown, and Union Square (ice rink and Christmas tree).

12/27/2024: Monterey It took us about 2.5 hours to drive straight from SF to Monterey (to save time, we skipped the start of Highway 1). The goal for this stop was visiting the aquarium. It’s in an old sardine cannery, and there’s an interesting room showing the machinery and explaining the process. The aquarium features all the local fish and plant species, plus a stunning jellyfish exhibit. We spent about 2.5 hours there. Entry is pricey at $65, and it was packed when we went. For parking, you can use meters or day lots. The cheapest we found was $25 for the day, with in-and-out privileges. We saw some closer lots charging $80, so it’s worth shopping around before parking and walking a bit more. Afterward, we stopped by the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary—a small, free park where these butterflies land, along with some wild deer. We ended the day at Lover’s Point, a park with an ocean view and surfers. That evening, we tried clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. Stayed overnight in Monterey.

12/28/2024: Big Sur Parks The Big Sur area has many state parks. Entry is $10 per car for the day (valid for any number of parks visited that same day). Pro tip: If you park outside and walk in, you don’t pay. We chose to visit Point Lobos Reserve. We hiked the trails along the ocean. Two must-do (short and easy) trails: “Sea Lion Point,” where massive waves crash onto the rocks, and “Bird Island Lookout,” where you can see thousands of pelicans and cormorants on the rocks, plus a few elephant seals. It’s truly stunning. We spent about 3 hours there. After driving along Garrapata State Park and crossing the famous Bixby Bridge, we went to Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park to do the short Valley View Trail + Pfeiffer Falls hike. It was nice being among the redwoods, but the waterfall was underwhelming. Maybe it’s more impressive in the summer when the river is flowing better. We ended the day at McWay Falls, a waterfall that flows directly into the ocean—super photogenic, especially at sunset. Returned to Monterey for the night.







12/29/2024: Drive to Morro Bay Highway 1 is currently closed near Gorda, so we had to take the inland route from Monterey, adding extra miles. It was raining, so we skipped the planned stop at Carmel-by-the-Sea. Instead, we detoured to Mission San Antonio de Padua, the 3rd mission (out of 21) built by the Spanish in 1773 to evangelize the region. It’s less famous than others, so there were fewer people, and it felt more “authentic” (free to visit). With fog adding to the rain, we headed straight to Morro Bay, our stop for the day, instead of continuing up Highway 1 to San Simeon. Took a short evening walk to Morro Rock—saw a few otters in the harbor. Stayed overnight in Morro Bay.



12/30/2024: Elephant Seals at Piedras Blancas The sun came back! We took a quick walk on the pier to see the otters in daylight, then drove back up Highway 1 to Piedras Blancas (near San Simeon), a famous spot for elephant seals. It’s birthing season, so there were lots of pups, plus males fighting for the females’ attention—what a show! We couldn’t get enough. We walked to the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse, with a few viewpoints of beaches where elephant seals were lounging (though far fewer than at the beach near the parking lot). We continued to Santa Barbara, our stop for the day. Stopped in San Luis Obispo for lunch and a quick city tour (Bubblegum Alley, the theater facade, and the mission). Since it was getting late, we skipped Los Alamos and went straight to Solvang, a charming Danish-style town (windmills, typical Danish houses) with lots of holiday lights (it’s their Julefest). Stayed overnight in Santa Barbara.

Bonjour, je suis heureux de vous accueillir à bord de ce nouveau carnet de voyage. 2020 est décidément une année bien compliquée et ce voyage est à 1000 lieux de ce qui était prévu à la base pour cette année.



A la base, un voyage était prévu début septembre, dans le Wyoming. Il a été reporté à 2021. Un voyage qui avait été annulé en mai en Slovénie a donc été placé à ces dates. Hélas, une semaine avant le départ, la Slovénie a imposé une quarantaine aux français et un test covid à réaliser dans les 36 avant le départ, donc : report à mai 2021.



Je cherchais donc une nouvelle destination… Danemark, Pologne, Suisse ? Ces 3 pays ont restreint également la venue des français. Il me restait donc la Suède, pays qui a eu une ligne et une stratégie stable face à la crise du covid.



J’ai donc acheté 3 billets flexibles sur Air France 3 jours avant le départ en cas de report de dernière minute. Seule la 1ere nuit a été réservée. Les autres l'ont été au fur et à mesure.



Nous avons décidé de nous concentrer sur le nord, plus sauvage. Notre besoin de grands espaces vierges nous avait poussés à réserver le Wyoming. La Suède nous offrira-t-elle la même chose ?

It’s been a while since I last wrote a travel journal, but this recent trip to Iceland reignited my urge to write—both for the breathtaking landscapes we discovered and our adventure full of twists and turns!

This Iceland trip is part of our world tour, which we started back in August 2019. We (Sandrine and Flo) left by plane with our baby, Lena, who was barely 5 months old at the time. We backpacked around the Pacific for 5 months before returning home for a short break to see family. That was just before COVID hit, in late January 2020.

What followed was a bit chaotic... For the second part of our world tour, we were supposed to pick up a new vehicle: a brand-new pickup with a camper cell we planned to live in for several years. Due to lockdown, we received the cell weeks late, and with borders closing, we had to rethink all our plans.

So, we postponed our Iceland departure by over a month and a half, jumping on the first ferry accessible to French travelers after lockdown! Our goal is to spend 3 months there, from early July to late September, in our new camper cell. Our base vehicle is a Toyota Hilux we bought new, fitted with a flatbed where the cell sits, and we’ve prepped it for this trip (reinforced springs + airbags, snorkel, chassis protection, and off-road tires...). The aim is to tackle as many off-road tracks in Iceland as possible, knowing this is already our 3rd trip there (3 weeks in summer 2016 with a Durango, then 1 week in winter 2018).

La date approche, mais j'ai peur que le voyagiste (O'Voyage) annule. Je m'explique nous partons de Lyon le 11 septembre avec Emirates, or il n'y a aucun vol de prévu, Emirates part uniquement de Paris pour le moment...

Avez-vous eu déjà eu le cas d'un changement d'aéroport de départ ? Car si pas de vol, ils vont annuler et je vais me retrouver avec un avoir (j'en ai déjà deux)... Je le ai contacté par mail et messenger, mais aucun retour.

Car depuis plusieurs mois avec mon conjoint nous nous sentons seuls dans la galère puisque nous avons réservé nos vols et hébergements pour septembre 2020 en Polynésie sans passer par agence. Etat des lieux à ce jour : -nos vols inter îles Air Tahiti sont annulés. Nous devons en re-programmer des autres. Il faut que je les rappelle. Pas sûrs d'avoir les mêmes vols les mêmes jours -nos vols long courrier Paris-papeete Air Tahiti Nui sont confirmés mais nous apprenons ce matin que l'escale à Los Angeles va durer 2 jours...! Je vais devoir également les rappeler pour avoir plus d'info (sachant que j'ai appelé hier et qu'ils ne m'ont rien dit) Si vous êtes dans le même cas que nous et avez des infos concernant cette escale de 2j à Los Angeles nous sommes preneurs ! 15/08 trajet Vérone --> Croatie N2/3 à Funtana vers Rovinj Visite de cette Cote ouest de l'istrie (Novingrad, Roving, Porec) Nous hésitions avec Pula mais rien d’excitant d'après les commentaires que nous avons vu passer

17/08 trajet Funtana --> Labin N4/5 Visite de la cote Est de l'Istrie (Rabaj , Duga Luka)

On est preneur de vos idées de visite en istrie surtout en intérieur des terres. Le parc de Brijuni est il digne d'interet ?

19/08 trajet Labin --> Plitvice N6 Un classique avec la visite du parc. J'ai lu qu'il était plus intéressante de faire une randonnée de 4h que de faire la rando d'1h pour voir les chutes. Est ce gérable en plein été avec des petits même en venant à l'ouverture ?

20/08 trajet Plitvice --> Split N7/8/9/10 Visite Split, Trogir, Omis, Krka 1 journée sur l'ile de Brac en voiture Nous avons choisi Brac car c est la plus pret pour faire un aller/retour dans la journée mais cela a t il un sens. certaines iles sont elles plus sympa ?

24/08 Trajet Split --> Zadar N11/12 Visite Zadar, Sibenik, Primosten. Est ce sympa d'aller sur l ile de Dugi Otok en Journée sans la voiture ou faut il etre véhiculé ?

Voyage organisé d’1 semaine en 4x4 et bivouacs

Samedi 26 janvier 2019 : Grosse frayeur avant de partir, dû fait du visa. Le site officiel pour obtenir ce foutu visa n’est pas super top. Il fallait indiquer tous nos prénoms. Comme mon troisième prénom est Robert, j’avais inscrit R, comme sur ma carte d’identité. J’avais envoyé la demande 3 semaines avant de partir. Au bout de 3 jours, j’ai reçu une réponse automatique « no valid » sans préciser le pourquoi. Après 3 mails de demande de renseignements, je me suis rendu au consulat qui ne comprenait pas pourquoi ils me l’avaient refusé, mais ne pouvait pas intervenir.

Seul un coup de fil à la police douanière Omanaise a pu m’aider. Encore fallait ils pouvoir les joindre à des heures acceptables, cad localement entre 8 et 9h du matin d’après le consulat, sinon ils ne décrocheraient pas. Ok mais avec le décalage horaire ça fait entre 5 et 6h du mat. Sachant aussi qu’entre le vendredi midi et dimanche c’est off pour les administrations. On est à 4 jours du départ. Le mercredi essai mais aucune réponse. Idem le jeudi. Ca commence à me stresser. Et miracle le vendredi, soit la veille du départ j’ai enfin un interlocuteur. Je ne comprend qu’à moitié son Anglais. Il me dit que la photo est ok mais après des minutes interminables, on tombe sur l’erreur. Je dois réenvoyer une demande sur le site. Ouf j’ai pu obtenir le visa à 11h, à 1h de la deadline…

Départ de Bruxelles à 12.30 vers Mascate avec transit par Istanbul. Arrivée à 1h du matin à Mascate. Bonjour à tous, La Géorgie a annoncé l'ouverture de ses frontières aux touristes internationaux pour le 1er juillet, il y a un moment déjà, mais depuis : plus de nouvelles. En savez-vous plus ? On trouve des articles parlant d'une liste de pays à paraître, mais pas grand chose de plus.

Bonjour, nous avons prévus d'aller aux USA du coté des grands parcs (Yellowstone, Grand téton et Mont Rushmore) pour un départ le 3 juillet à destination de Denver (via Montréal par Air canada affrété par Brussels airlines) et un retour le 22 juillet (idem par air canada-brussels airlines). Nous avons acheté nos billets sur gotogate et nous ne savons pas si nous allons pouvoir partir ou pas, nous n'avons aucune informations quand aux fermetures des frontières qui évoluent de jours en jours ! Sur le site de gotogate nous n'avons pas beaucoup d'infos et sur brussel airlines comme nous n'avons pas acheté directement chez eux, ils nous disent qu'il faut se tourner vers le prestataire qui nous a vendu les billets à savoir Gotogate, j'ai lu que plusieurs personnes essayaient déséspérement d'avoir un avoir ou un remboursement en vain ! Que devons-nous faire ? vers qui se retourner ? Faut-il encore attendre le 15 juin, car le gouvernement ne sais pas encore s'il vont réouvrir les frontières jusqu'à cette date. Nous sommes perdus nous aimerions reporter notre voyage d'un an si possible. Nous espérons récupérer l'argent mis dans les billets (plus de 2200 euros). Merci par avance de votre aide ! poutsouch60
