Bonjour ! Je pars à Johannesbourg avec mon petit garçon de 8 ans 24 jours en Aout. Nous louerons une voiture et avons pris la tente. Notre projet : 6 jours au cap et alentours, retour avion Johannesbourg et circuit 17 jours Kruger/Swaziland/Zoulouland ou Kruger/Darkensberg selon le timing. Peut on camper en dehors des villes facilement ? Doit on réserver le campement dans le parc Kruger ou peut on trouver au dernier moment (voire 2 ou 3 jours avant ?) J'ai voulu réserver une auberge de jeunesse au cap (ashanti) et ils m'ont dit qu'ils ne prenaient pas les enfants de moins de 12 ans ? Va t-on avoir souvent ce pb ? Est ce que c'est sympa de camper dans les auberges ? Merci de votre aide !

1) Manyeleti Private Reserve (entre Timbavati et Sabi Sand - Le long du Kruger NP)

J'ai opté pour cette réserve privée, pour son faible développement des infrastructures touristiques et l'assurance donc d'éviter l'enfilade des 4 x 4 pour les safaris photos.

Y a t-il des Vfistes qui ont eu la chance de la découvrir et qui pourraient me faire part de leurs expériences en son sein ? Faune recensée ? Bush Walking - Birds Watching ?

2) St Lucia Marine Reserve :

Le safari bateau de nuit sur l'estuaire, à travers la Mangrove afin d'approcher les crocodiles et Hippos, vaut-il le coup ? Ou il n'apporte rien de plus que le même fait de jour ?

Est ce réellement intéressant ?

Je prevoit un sejour combine de 18 jours en Afrique du Sud et Namibie au mois d'aout 2005. Nous sommes 3 a voyager, nous arrivons le 15 aout a Johanesbourg et repartons le 31 aout. nous voudrions visiter le nord de l'Afrique du Sud, partir en voiture vers le Parc Kruger, aller au Drakensberg et visiter la Blyde River Canyon et retour a Johansbourg, tout cela pendant environ 10 jours, pensez vous que cela est faisable? Pensez vous que l'on puisse visiter autre chose, et si oui, que vaut il vraiment la peine d'etre vu?

Apres ce petit periple en Afrique du Sud, nous prendrions un vol Johanesbourg-Windhoek. Connaisez vous des compagnies aeriennes locales, eventuellement Low Cost entre ces 2 villes? J'ai verifie aupres de South African Airways et Air Namibia, mais les prix sont assez eleves.

A l'arrivee a Windhoek, on voudrait louer une voiture (pas de 4x4 puisqu'il parrait que ce n'est pas necessaire). Nous avons 7 jours a consacrer a la Namibie. Pensez vous qu'il est faisable de visiter Sossusvlei, le desert du Namib, le Parc Etosha, Swakopmund et le desert du Kalahari en 7 jours?

J'organise mon voyage de noces en Afrique du Sud.(nous partirons à trois : nous deux et notre fils de trois ans). Nous partons à priori le 21 octobre (je n'ai pas encore finalisé le dossier mais les options sont prises sur l'avion).

Nous avons prévu 4 nuits au Kruger (sur deux restcamps) puis Santa Lucia puis 4 nuits au Cap (vol intérieur Durban - Le Cap)

L'idée est de voir des beaux paysages et des animaux sauvages : je suis contre les zoos et j'ai envie de montrer les animaux "en vrai" à notre fils.

Pour les baleines j'ai du mal à trouver l'info : est ce que vous croyez qu'à Hermanus fin octobre on peut encore voir les baleines? des fois je vois que c'est entre juin et octobre, des fois entre juin et novembre..

Enfin est-ce qu'il vaut mieux faire le séjour dans l'autre sens (commencer par Le Cap) pour avoir plus de chances de les voir?? (Si on commence par Kruger on sera à Hermanus le 31 octobre ou le 1er novembre)

J'ai un doute sur le prix des entrées dans les parcs, notamment Kruger et Kalhari: Les prix indiqués sur le site de San Parks sont de 120 zars/jours. Mais si l'on regarde la Wild Card pour les touristes étrangers, ils indiquent qu'elle est valable pour 10 jours ou 10 nuits ! Cela veut-il dire qu'il faut payer 120Zar par jour et 120 Zar par nuit dans le parc?

J'aurai besoin de bons conseils pour un voyage d'un mois en Afrique du Sud et au Zwimbabwe.

L'itinéraire serait le suivant: arrivée à Johannesburg puis visite du Parc Kruger, puis Zimbabwe pour voir les chutes Victoria, puis retour en Afrique du Sud pour rejoindre le Cap en passant par l'intérieur des terres (upington pa exemple).

Mes questions sont multiples: tout d'abord le temps, a votre avis, un mois est ce bien suffisant pour faire tout cela et si oui à quel rythme? Qu'est ce qui est le mieux pour aller au Zimbabwe (voiture de location, blue train, bus...), est-ce que ca vaut le coup de loue une voiture pour tout ce périple (Zimbabwe inclus) et si oui à qui louer??

Est-ce que ca peut valoir le coup de faire une escapade au Bostwana (delta de l'okavongo notamment) pour revenir du Zimbabwe vers Cape town?

Nous repartons une fois de plus en Afrique Australe! Je prépare un circuit un peu tordu et j'aurais aimé avoir quelques tuyaux: Je veux aller dans le Kalahari gembok NP passer 4 jours, mais en même temps comme nous enmenons des amis qui ne connaissent l'Afrique du Sud, je veux leur faire découvrir la Cap et le Kruger, et tout ça en 15 jours! Pour la 1ere partie du trip je pensais partir de Jo'Burg en voiture vers le Kalahari via une halte à Kuruman et ensuite remonter directement sur le park: Est-ce raisonnablement faisable. Combien de temps entre Kuruman et le Park? vaut-il mieux faire Jo'Burg- Upington en avion et continuer en voiture ? La suite est plus simple car nous descendons sur le Cap avec 2 petites haltes et prenons un vol pour le Kruger. Merci pour vos conseils.

My trip to South Africa is getting closer (still 2 months to go 😏), and I’m diving back into my itinerary: from Saturday to the following Sunday around Cape Town, then from Sunday to the following Saturday in Kruger.

For Cape Town, the plan was to avoid changing accommodation every day (we’ll do enough of that in the second part) but still see different landscapes. I know, I’m missing out on a lot, but you’ve got to make choices, and after all this time, I know what I like—and especially what I don’t (or like less) 😉

Here’s the breakdown:

Arrival Saturday at 11 AM: heading to Hermanus (2 nights). The idea is to stroll along the cliff path in the afternoon, and possibly drive to the Klein River Lagoon. Sunday: Stony Point, then depending on time and weather, a hike in Kogelberg Nature Reserve or Fernkloof Nature Reserve (which seems less scenic but has shorter walks). Monday: drive to Franschhoek (1 night). If everything lines up, a hike in Jonkershoek NR and a visit to a wine estate. Tuesday: drive to Mountceder Lodge in the Cederberg (2 nights). I’m thinking of visiting the Stadsaal Caves and the elephant paintings, and maybe one of the hikes listed on the lodge’s site or Maltese Cross. Thursday: heading to Hout Bay for 3 nights. In no particular order: a classic day trip around the peninsula, half a day at Kirstenbosch Gardens, and half a day at Lion’s Head. Sunday: flight to Johannesburg.

My questions are mostly about (short) hikes: Has anyone here done hikes in Kogelberg, Fernkloof, or Jonkershoek? At Mountceder Lodge (Michel, if you’re reading this… 😉), has anyone tried the hikes (guided or not) offered by the lodge? There’s still half a day to fill when we’re in Hout Bay—any ideas (not necessarily hikes)?

Lastly, regarding safety: the French foreign ministry (always alarmist, but still) recommends hiking in groups. Is it really risky in broad daylight? (I’m not sure a group of two women counts as a "group"…)

I’d like to return to Africa and stay in a lodge where I can see animals—not necessarily the Big Five—without needing any transport once I arrive at the lodge, and at a price under $250 per day for two people with full board. Hi there, In two months, I’m heading off for 4 weeks with three backpacker friends to South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini. We’ve got our round-trip flight tickets from France to Johannesburg and plan to drive from Johannesburg to Cape Town and back to Johannesburg in an SUV or 4x4. For other city trips, we’ll use local transport or Uber. That’s the plan for our transportation.

For the car rental, I’d like to know which company to book with. Can anyone give me some tips on renting a vehicle and crossing into Lesotho and Eswatini?

Next, I’ve put together a rough itinerary that seems good to me, but could you share your experiences and maybe point out any mistakes I’ve made?

It's official—I've got our flight tickets for next October! Two weeks with my 16-year-old son, aiming to see plenty of big animals and birds.

After going through a good chunk of the forum and travel journals about South Africa, I think my itinerary is ready...

I’ve planned 2 days with long drives to minimize time spent outside the parks. These are Sunday the 18th: Johannesburg Airport to Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Reserve, and Friday the 23rd: St. Lucia to Nelspruit (staying in South Africa) or as close as possible to visit the Canyon the next day.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary, especially these 2 days—are they doable or not? Should I book in advance, or will there be places to sleep along the way if we don’t make it to our planned destination? What’s the crowd level in South Africa in October?

As for Kruger, I’ve chosen campsites with camping facilities, prioritizing the "satellite" camps, at least in the northern part!! I’ve planned to change camps almost every day to combine travel and wildlife spotting, but is this the right choice?

Last year, I stumbled upon a "nature reserve" in the Waterberg by sheer luck. Just one night, but I was so thrilled that I went back this year for three nights. It was perfect for breaking up the trip between Marakele and Mapungubwe. The Waterberg is the Limpopo of game farms, hunting farms... and places trying to attract clients from Joburg and Kruger, with varying levels of ethics. The roads aren’t always great, potholes are everywhere, and Google Maps is pretty unreliable. But in my case, I found exactly what I was looking for...

As often happens, old farms have been grouped together to create a nature reserve that doesn’t sell you "wild" lions, has no rhinos (protecting rhinos is complicated), no elephants, and no buffalo. So, antelopes, elusive leopards, hyenas (didn’t see any), peaceful giraffes, warthogs, etc.—just general game! What’s the point? Well, you go for walks or hikes with game drives... you bike... you chill. You get out of the car. For us this year, a gorgeous "house," fully equipped, on the edge of the forest, with wood for the fire and a plain as the view... An unbeatable quality-to-price ratio in a natural setting! A little photo dump for the vibe. You’ve gathered that part of the exploration is by car (it’s big) and part on foot...

I’m planning a Tanzania trip combined with Zanzibar for 15 days (8+6 days). The setup: a private trip for two, in July or August.

We’re heading to Tanzania primarily for the safari experience—the animals, photography, and stunning landscapes. The classic Northern Circuit for beginners is Arusha / Tarangire / Ngorongoro / Serengeti.

But that’s a lot of driving if we do the full loop... and I’ve read it’s better to take your time in the parks rather than spend all day in transfers (saw that in Lonely Planet).

So, beginner’s question... Do you think Arusha / Tarangire / Ngorongoro is a good alternative? We’d skip the legendary Serengeti but could spend more time in the parks and avoid long stretches of rough roads (prioritizing paved routes instead)... Maybe adding Lake Manyara to the mix.

For context, we did Kruger about ten years ago (5 days self-drive).

We’re booking local providers for safaris and excursions, but we don’t want to rent a car (airport shuttle, safety concerns, driving on the left). We’d love to get around by bike or another way inside the park (we have young kids). What solutions would you recommend? We’ll be at Jabula Hotel, about 6 km from the bike rental shop—is there another option? Inside the park, there’s no vehicle rental available.

We’re back from our 3-week trip to South Africa in July. It was a family trip with our four grown-up kids (ages 18 to 25).

First off, I’d like to thank everyone on this forum for their great tips—they really helped us plan this trip!

The trip: We spent 15 days between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, then a week around Kruger (including Blyde River Canyon). We found South Africans to be welcoming and always ready to help. We never felt unsafe (just followed basic safety rules). The police are very visible, especially on the roads.

Logistics: We’d booked our accommodations in advance but made a few changes on the spot based on how we felt at the time. We rented two vehicles from Firefly (Hertz). No complaints—recent cars, quick returns, and the deposit wasn’t charged. We’d gotten our international driver’s permits... which stayed in France! Luckily, no one asked for them. Driving on the left wasn’t an issue (it wasn’t our first time). The roads we took were in good, even great, condition. Only a few tracks to lodges or parks were rough and required extra caution. Lots of pedestrians on the sides of roads, even highways. And plenty of very slow trucks. But they pull over to let you pass. It’s also common for cars to cross into the opposite lane to overtake, even with white lines. We took two domestic flights: one early in the morning (Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth) and one in the late afternoon (Cape Town to Johannesburg) to save time.

We had some highlights and a few disappointments—all part of the journey! More details coming soon.

Hi there, We’ll have about 7 hours (11:30 AM to 6 PM) to do the Panorama Route with an overnight stay near Graskop. My question is: - Is that a bit tight, and would it be better to head back up toward Hoedspruit to do the route in the opposite direction before our flight, maybe revisiting some spots we might’ve rushed through? - Or is it smarter to take a route we haven’t done yet, like heading down to Nelspruit via Hazyview? But here’s the thing—are there things to see or new landscapes on that road, considering we’ll have already done Kruger, Blyde (Ballule), and Manyeleti? Hi there, We’re heading to South Africa in August 2025 and planning a classic loop that I’d love to finish with the Drakensberg (I’m a big hiking fan) before returning to Johannesburg to catch our flight. I’ve got 3 nights for this part of our trip. But I’m wondering if it’s actually a good idea to hike in the Drakensberg in August, since it’s the Southern Hemisphere winter (I’m from Réunion and we hike year-round there, but I don’t know what the climate’s like in South Africa, especially the Drakensberg). I’m particularly worried about getting stuck because of snow and missing our flight... ;) I’ve read so many different things that I’m totally confused! My partner and I are planning a 21-day self-drive trip from Victoria Falls to Cape Town, flying from Montreal to Victoria Falls and renting a 4x4. I’d love to hear members’ thoughts on our itinerary and its feasibility, along with your recommendations for must-see spots, essential parks, lodges, etc.

Our ideal is to start our stay at the falls and head south to South Africa, finishing in Cape Town by the sea for two days of relaxation before returning to Canada. Hi there, Everything’s in the title. For those who’ve already been to South Africa, I was wondering if our French type C plugs work with the sockets you’ve encountered in your accommodations there. Apparently, South Africa uses types D, M, and N, and type C plugs are only compatible with type N sockets. Do accommodations mostly have type N sockets? Or are they mostly D and M, which would mean buying an adapter? Thanks for your replies!
