La peur de l'inconnu? English translation pending

English translation pending
😎
Travel companions for Brazil in November 2026
I'm planning a trip to Brazil as winter approaches, around late October to early November 2026. I don’t have exact dates since I recently retired, so I can stay until mid-December if needed. I’m looking for a travel companion (male or female) for this journey—think relaxed mode, pousadas with locals, parks, seaside, culture, and music.
I’ve already explored the north, like Recife and Fortaleza. What I found most challenging was communicating with locals since I don’t speak Portuguese, and not everyone speaks English. I’m trying to learn now, but the accent isn’t easy!!!! This country is huge, and I’d love to discover the south. The idea is to arrive in São Paulo (without staying long—I’m not a big fan of large cities) and take a flight to Iguazu, then a bus to Paraty and Ilha Grande to enjoy the spots. After that, a bit of Rio is unavoidable, but I’d like to explore off-the-beaten-path places with a guide. To finish, Salvador de Bahia, with a focus on Morro de São Paulo and Boipeba. Maybe a return via Salvador—TAP offers that route. Nothing’s set in stone; we can discuss everything together.
I just got back from Madagascar, where I spent the winter (a place I know well), and I’ve got quite a few trips under my belt. Feel free to email me so we can chat, then we can call or meet—I’m based in Toulouse and can host you.
patricia.wagner31@sfr.fr Have a great day! Vejo você em breve

Cape Verde island duo: which to choose based on my criteria?
Hi there,
I’ve been looking for a destination for a 2-week trip early next spring, and Cape Verde has been growing on me. (The flight isn’t too long, the temperatures are more than pleasant, and it’s an unknown country for me.)
The thing is, Cape Verde is pretty complicated when it comes to inter-island transfers, and I don’t want to spend my time in airports or on ferries—especially since those transfers aren’t exactly known for their reliability...
So, I’d like to limit internal flights to just 2, meaning the island I arrive on plus one other.
I’ve ruled out the all-inclusive islands: Sal and Boa Vista.
I’m torn between combining Santo Antão + São Vicente or Fogo + Santiago.
The goal of the trip is to see beautiful landscapes, go on day hikes (nothing multi-day), swim a little—though I prefer quiet spots—and enjoy 1 or 2 days in a city, but not much more than that!
In your opinion, which option would be the best, and why?
Thanks! :)

Which islands should we prioritize in Cape Verde?
Hello,
We’re two senior travelers and would like to visit Cape Verde in Feb 2027.
We don’t hike but love meeting people, culture, and nature.
Which islands would you recommend, and do you know of any local agencies?
Thanks a million!
Cananeia and PETAR Regions
Hi there!
I’m putting together my itinerary for Brazil, looking for beautiful natural spots with wildlife, flora, and great hikes...
I’ve come across the Cananeia / Super Agui / Ilha do Mel region and the PETAR / Intervales / Alto Ribeira area.
Has anyone here been to these places? If so, do you have any recommendations for accommodations and activities?
Thanks in advance!
Best,

Brazilian airline GOL announces European routes
Hello, some (potentially) good news for Brazil lovers—GOL airline is launching a route to Europe from Rio, starting in September for Lisbon, then Paris at a later date that hasn’t been announced yet.
They’ll be using their new A330-900 neo.
No prices have been announced so far, but hopefully we’ll find direct flights from GIG at a more interesting fare than AF or Latam…
Looking for birdwatching travel companions - Northern South America (Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Guyana)
Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip of at least one month in August-September in Northern South America, with the main focus being wildlife discovery, especially birds.
I haven’t set the exact destination or dates yet. It’ll depend on flight opportunities, my budget (3000-4000 €), and the people I decide to travel with.
I’m particularly looking into options in Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, and French Guiana. Some possibilities: - Ecuador: Mindo (cloud forest, foothills of the Andes) 🇪🇨 - Colombia: coastal forests of Santa Marta, Los Nevados National Park, Antioquia, coastal rainforest of Chocó 🇨🇴 - Brazil: Pantanal (budget permitting), Northeast (between São Luís and Salvador) 🇧🇷 - French Guiana: Kaw Marshes, Petit Saut, Mana, Matoury, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni 🇬🇫
I’m looking for: 1 or 2 companions to share this adventure. 🦉 Birdwatching enthusiasts or those interested in other taxa (all levels) and/or wildlife photography lovers; 🎒 a bit of a rugged, curious, and enthusiastic spirit. No age limit, but good physical shape for relaxed nature hikes.
The plan: mix guided birdwatching tours in small groups, lodges for intense nature observation, with periods of independent travel. Budget: 3500-4000 € per person, flights included. Proposed timeframe: August-September 2026
Everything’s still flexible. Important to get to know each other and chat before we go (in person or via Zoom/Teams). If you’re interested, send me a message! 🦉

Need help organizing a trip to Cape Verde during Carnival
Hi everyone,
After a year where I’ve worked way too much and with a house under renovation, it’s become essential to take a breather. My contract ends on 01/30, and I’ll try to find a new client for early March, so overall, let’s go somewhere in February!
I thought Réunion with the full trek around the Mafate cirque for reconnecting with Nature would be perfect, but since it’s cyclone season, it wasn’t such a great idea. Then came the idea that Southeast Asia could fulfill the peace-and-beach vibe, especially Cambodia with its cultural past, but the flight ticket price and a chat with a friend made me change my mind—and boom, Cape Verde popped up, with Santo Antão for hiking and São Vicente for culture and the beach.
So I bought a ticket a week ago, and oh, what a coincidence—it’s during Carnival!
Except now, I don’t know if it’s reality or just exhaustion talking, but I feel like I’m making a mess of things.
I’ve traveled a lot without even booking the first night, but this time, I pre-booked 2 nights in Mindelo (though one of them ended up canceling itself).
But the main issue is that I arrive on Monday, 02/09 at 6 PM and leave on Sunday, 02/22 at 11 AM, and there’s a little hiccup in the logical organization—actually, several hiccups—since I don’t really have any organization right now, and that’s where I need help
Because Carnival is in full swing from 02/15 to 02/17, right in the middle of my trip, so the logic of my visit to Santo Antão isn’t clicking for me. Plus, I just checked, and there’s zero accommodation available in Mindelo from 02/15 to 02/18 😕
So I don’t know: should I skip Carnival, should I forget about planning and just wing it once I’m there, should I stay on São Vicente after Carnival (because I read Montaganrd’s trip report, and he made São Vicente sound like a rock !), or should I keep in mind the option of heading to Santiago afterward and buying a return flight to Paris from Praia?
I need help 🏴☠️
Family trip to Brazil: Paraty, Ilha Grande, or both?
Hi everyone,
We’re making a family dream come true: spending a month in Brazil from July 19 to August 20. We’ll land in Rio and spend 6 days there (we’ve finalized a home exchange for a lovely apartment in the Copacabana neighborhood). After that, we’re heading to Minas Gerais by rental car for 11 days (Tiradentes, Ouro Preto, and the Inhotim Institute), then the Costa Verde, and finally 2 days in São Paulo.
We’ll be traveling with our three kids, ages 17, 14, and 9, who are real travelers and good hikers. Goes hand in hand, right? 😄
For now, we’ve planned to visit Ilha Grande (4 days) and then Paraty and its surroundings (3 days). What do you think? Ilha Grande appealed to us for its hikes and beaches, but couldn’t we do that along Paraty’s coast? I’ve read mixed reviews about Ilha Grande...
Thanks for your tips, opinions, and anything else! !

What are the dates for the Mindelo Carnival in 2026?
Hi there,
I’m trying to find out the dates for the best parades at the Mindelo Carnival in 2026, but I’m having trouble figuring it out. When I search for "Mindelo Carnival 2026," I get different dates and no clear schedule. I’ve found the parade on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, and the one on Sunday, February 22, with the grotesque makeup, which seem the most interesting. On the other hand, some say the São Nicolau Carnival is more authentic than Mindelo’s. If you’ve experienced this firsthand—not just theoretically but actually been there—I’d love to hear your practical tips.
Thanks in advance!
Elisabeth

Feedback on 20-day Brazil itinerary in August
Hi everyone,
I’d love to get your thoughts on the itinerary we’re planning for this summer (August) with our three older teens. We’ve booked our round-trip flight from Lyon to Rio. Originally, we were thinking of heading down to Paraty / Ilha Grande... but after checking, the water temperature seems a bit too cool, so we’d prefer to go to Bahia state for a bit more warmth. Our interests: discovering the people and cities, enjoying the beach and relaxation, a few short hikes, etc.
What do you think of this itinerary? Too much time lost in transit?

What are some itinerary ideas for 15 days starting from Faro?

CAPE VERDE 2025: 3 weeks, 4 islands.
And we still haven’t seen everything!
Before setting off for new horizons at the end of this year, it’s time for me to share my trip to Cape Verde this summer 2025.
I particularly love these spontaneous trips, and our stay in Cape Verde is one of those because it was only at the beginning of April that we decided on this getaway, which had been catching our eye for a while, given our love for the mountains.
As always—well, when it’s open—I turned to VF, and I want to immediately thank Marie, aka ptitortue, who helped me a lot in planning this trip through her travel journals and our exchanges!
Because Cape Verde is both small and vast! We decided not to rush from one airport to another, to enjoy the places and the people, but also to relax, since the work backlog from being stuck in May (see my previous travel journal 😅) had to be caught up on in June.
So, 4 islands will be our winners from 06/28 to 07/19:
Santiago first for logistical reasons, as round-trip flights from the capital Praia were the cheapest (650 €/person from Lyon via Lisbon with TAP, still!)
São Vicente, because it’s the gateway to the next one but ultimately more than that...
Santo Antão, pretty much the main goal of the trip since Marie (and the photos) had really sold it to me.
And finally, Sal Island, for some rest—a non-negotiable condition for my other half—and we’ll see that I should’ve listened to Marie...
That said, what a chatterbox I am—buckle up, flight attendants at the doors, off we go on new beautiful escapes! (Thanks to Sophie for the easy loan)
Last note for my eager fan club 😏: yes, there will be alcohol—how could there not be in the land of grogue!

Travel buddy for Southern Africa this winter
I'm looking for my ticket to travel down to the African Great Lakes via Uganda and Rwanda (arrival). Who wants to share the trip? Maybe even head down to South Africa, Johannesburg—it's way more fun with two than alone. Sure, you can easily find hikers on treks, but I'm not too keen on paying $1500 just to see and bother gorillas!!
After first contact, I'll share my WhatsApp number. See you soon, Roger

Self-organized stopovers in the Canary Islands and Madeira

Visiting Northeast Brazil in January-February
hi there
I’m thinking of heading to northeastern Brazil in January or February—I don’t really have a choice with the dates.
Apparently, it rains a lot during that time.
Is it really a big issue for traveling? Are these tropical downpours—heavy but brief—or more of a continuous rain?
I’m especially curious about the stops in Lençóis, Atins, and Parnaíba.
For Lençóis, I know the lagoons are almost empty at this time of year.
I’ll also be passing through São Luís, Jericoacoara, Fortaleza, Olinda/Recife, and Salvador da Bahia, and before heading back to Europe, I’ll visit the Iguaçu Falls.
What do you think?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Best regards
Recommendations for a self-guided tour of the Cape Verde islands
Hi there,
We’re planning a two-week couple’s trip hopping between the Cape Verde islands at the end of November 2025.
Our arrival and departure airport will be on the island of SAL.
We’ve got some hikes lined up.
Based on your experiences, what recommendations and suggestions do you have?
Thanks in advance for your valuable tips!
Planning a circuit + flights in Brazil
Hi everyone,
Our travel plans to Brazil in October are moving forward. Now we're looking for the best way to put it all together. Starting from Montpellier, probably connecting through CDG, arriving in Salvador de Bahia, stopping in Belo Horizonte, then a flight to Rio, and the return trip. How can we manage to finalize such a circular flight? Thanks in advance for your tips.
Best,
Serge
Tips for a 15- to 20-day itinerary in Brazil in October
Hi everyone,
My partner and I are planning a trip to Brazil in October for 15 to 20 days. I spent some time in Brazil years ago while collaborating with the University of Lavras (MG). Now, I’d love to introduce my partner to the country. My initial plan is Rio (4 days), Bahia—which I’ve never visited—(4 days), Belo Horizonte to catch up with old friends and explore the surrounding areas (Tiradentes and Ouro Preto), then... and back. I’m really counting on your advice to help shape this trip. We’re not backpackers anymore!
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,

13-day Brazil itinerary: Rio, Iguazu, Ilha Grande, and Paraty in July
Hi there, we’ll have 15 days total, which means 13 days of travel on the ground. We’re planning to visit Brazil during the second half of July. I’m not naive enough to think we can see a huge chunk of Brazil in such a short time, so I’m focusing on a specific area to make it relaxed and enjoyable.
We’re flying out of Madrid. I was thinking of spending 3 or 4 days in Rio, 3 days in Iguazu (I initially thought one day would be enough, but I’ve read it’s highly recommended to visit the Argentine side as well), 3 or 4 days on Ilha Grande, and 3 days in Paraty. I’m not entirely sure about Ilha Grande in July, but I’m looking for a place to unwind and enjoy the sea (if the water’s good then).
I’ve noticed a lot of people fly into Madrid and return from São Paulo (or vice versa). What’s the advantage of that? It doesn’t seem problematic (based on Google Maps, though I’m no expert) to navigate from Rio. Is there a more efficient order for visits to minimize travel time?
As you can tell, I’m just starting to plan, but I’ll need to book the international flights soon. I’ll probably have more questions for those of you who are patient enough to help! ;)
Thanks!!

Miscellaneous info for a few days in Brazil
hi,
We’re planning to spend a few days in Brazil and would love some tips. What are the easiest transfer options between Rio airport and our hotel? Where’s the best area to stay in Rio for 3 days? Has anyone used the domestic air pass, and how does it work? How do you visit the waterfalls, and which hotel is best there? And what’s worth seeing around Salvador de Bahia? Thanks in advance for your replies. Best,

Visiting Brazil as a family with mom in a manual wheelchair (standing impossible)
Hello,
we’re planning a three-week trip to Brazil.
What sights and accommodations would you recommend, given we’re a couple with mom in a wheelchair and two older teens, and we’d like to visit:
-Iguazu Falls
-Rio de Janeiro (Sugarloaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer, old town... and a beach)
-Salvador de Bahia
-if possible, another city further north like Recife or Natal
We’ll arrive in São Paulo, where we’ll visit the young Brazilian woman we had the chance to host during her high school year in France.
It’s hard to gauge hotel accessibility from France (bathroom photos aren’t very telling and worry us...) Another concern: domestic flights in Brazil.
Thank you so much for your tips and advice! :-)

Brazil Trip – 19 Nights Through Agencies
Hi there,
I’m planning a trip to Brazil in October and decided to go through an agency to organize our itinerary. I asked two agencies to put together a circuit with transfers, hotels, organized visits, and one domestic flight. I don’t speak Spanish or Portuguese. 6 nights in Rio 3 nights on Ilha Grande 3 nights in Paraty Domestic flight to Salvador for 3 nights 3 nights in Morro de São Paulo 1 night in Salvador before flying back to France. For this itinerary, I’m going with Tourlane, but I’m still waiting on the second quote from Comptoir des Voyages. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the itinerary and especially on these agencies—thanks for any feedback! 😊

Where to exchange money in Cape Verde?
Hi everyone,
We’re traveling at the end of February with two little kids. Everywhere I read that payments are made in escudos. For exchanging larger sums, what’s the best place to do it?
Thanks for your tips!
Visit to Madeira in late March
Hi everyone, we’re thinking of spending the last week of March in Madeira. What do you think? Is the weather nice? Isn’t it too cloudy? Are there already flowers? We’re mainly going to explore the island and do some hikes. We don’t plan on swimming. Thanks for your suggestions!!
A week in the Algarve
Back from a week in the Algarve.
The goal was to get some fresh air, walk at a relaxed pace (80 km in 6 days), and visit friends.
Transavia flight: No issues YorCar rental: No issues (and cheap) B&B 1: Quinta do Mocho Turismo Rural in Estoy: Good, even if a bit remote B&B 2: Casa Luma B&B in Lagos: Disappointed (and really disappointed with room #3)
Day 1: Flight, rental car, stop at São Lourenço in Almancil, and visit to Loulé Day 2: Olhão, walk at Praia do Barril, Tavira, and evening in Faro’s old town (park at São Francisco parking lot) Day 3: Walk on the boardwalks at Quinto do Ludo, Falesia beaches, Carvoeiro Day 4: The boardwalks in Alvor, Praia da Rocha in Portimão, Ferragudo, and the boardwalks around Algar Seco Day 5: Ponta da Piedade in Lagos, walk to Praia de Luz from Praia Camilho Day 6: Burgau, Cape Sagres, Cape St. Vincent, Carrapateira, and Praia da Bordeira Day 7: "Sete Vales Suspensos" hike from Marinha Beach
Our highlights: - The Vincentine Coast (Carrapateira), much nicer than the concrete of the southern coast - The fish restaurants and Cataplana (A Barrigada in Lagos, Ribeira do Poço in Vila do Bispo...) - The boardwalks everywhere (Quinto do Ludo, Alvor, Algar Seco...) - The sun on the cliffs and Falesia Beach (it’s the local Bryce Canyon) - Chatting with the fishermen perched on the cliffs of Carrapateira - The weather (we were lucky for early March)
Our disappointments: - The towns and villages (Tavira and Lagos stand out) - The traffic off the highway - The English, the English, and more English everywhere

Questions about an 11-day Brazil itinerary in February
Good evening,
We're leaving from January 26 to February 7 with our two kids, aged 23 and 27. I'm hoping to visit Iguazu, Rio, Ilha Grande, or Cabo Frio. I have a few questions.
- Should we visit Rio with a guide, considering we want to explore favelas and hike to reach the main sites? And how many days should we plan for it?
- How many days for Ilha Grande, and is the weather favorable during this period? Is it a must-see?
- What do you think of Cabo Frio?
In terms of organization, is it better to visit Iguazu at the beginning, middle, or end of our stay, departing from São Paulo or Rio? We haven’t bought our flight tickets yet, so I can arrange to arrive or depart from Rio/São Paulo.
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences and opinions!
