55 days with the family in the Yucatán, including a side trip to Belize...
by Scot2021 · 2025-10-19 · 34 replies

Hi everyone!

That was about all the Spanish I could speak before we left... Luckily, Tom, 15 and in high school, gets by just fine! And Caroline did a year of Duolingo before we took off... Anyway, after 55 days in the American West three years ago, it’s Mexico’s turn for this second long adventure.

A quick intro to the crew:

- Oscar, 10, a sporty and lively little boy who loves swimming and basketball, - Tom, 15, a high schooler, sporty and tall, who loves swimming and American football, - Caroline, 47, a PE teacher, sporty , loves hiking and snorkeling, - and me, Sylvain, 50, a science teacher, sporty, loves traveling and always has a possible next trip in mind

We mostly travel by swapping our house to discover beautiful France and the world: 135 swaps over the last 13 years.....

Our itinerary is pretty classic since it’s our first time in the Yucatán, and we’ll make a little 10-day detour to Belize...

See you soon...
Warnings About the Vosges Massif Crossing with TopoGuide ref. 502
by Ludomero · 2025-09-22 · 3 replies
Hi there, This August, I hiked the Vosges section (Vosges massif) of the GR5 (Lauterbourg-Wissembourg-gr53-gr5-Belfort) using the TopoGuide "Traversée du Massif des Vosges" (ref 502, April 2024 edition). My experience was partly ruined by a few things I feel I should share here to help others avoid the same pitfalls—or at least disappointments.

Having used "TopoGuide" books before, I’d always trusted them for organizing treks lasting several weeks, or even months.

Beyond the satisfactory mapping (reproductions of IGN 1:25,000 maps), these guides include route descriptions that are usually enough to find your way. On that point, I have no serious criticism of the Vosges crossing guide.

In addition to the route details, the guide provides "average" time estimates for traveling from point A to point B—useful info for gauging effort and planning likely stages. However, I eventually realized I couldn’t rely on these time estimates. I’d assumed they were calculated by the FFRP, considering that 100m of positive elevation gain roughly equals 1km on flat terrain, with an average walking speed of 4km/h. So, I’d recommend anyone using this guide to recalculate all the time estimates to avoid nasty surprises on tight stages. 🤪

Another key feature of the guide, in my opinion, is its info on accommodation options—especially budget-friendly ones suited for long-distance hikers on a tight budget. A section called "préparation des étapes" includes a table with a column meant to highlight "refuges" and "gîtes d'étapes." That column had me feeling optimistic: these budget accommodations were listed as plentiful along the route. After all, we were in the territory of the famous Club Vosgien—it made sense there’d be plenty of hiker-friendly lodging options. The reality on the ground was quite different. The TopoGuide wasn’t really to blame here, except that a serious warning wouldn’t have hurt. First, regarding the "refuges," most were run by associations. With rare exceptions, the volunteers only opened them on weekends. You can’t really blame people for not volunteering on weekdays, but it makes things tricky when the info about weekend-only openings often turns out to be wrong. As for the "gîtes d'étape," I was mostly disappointed when I was told that a place was booked for weeks: the vast majority of what was listed as a "gîte d'étape" turned out to be "gîtes ruraux." The advice here? If you don’t want to—or can’t—camp, double-check all the accommodation details before you set off. It’s time-consuming and tedious, but if you can, camping is still the best option. 😐 On a brighter note, during the first part of my trip, I came across several cabins that offered alternatives to camping. 🙂

P.S.: Even the youth hostel in Saverne was closed in the middle of August... 😕
What tips for a 15-day trip to Zanzibar?

Facebook Travel Groups vs. Travel Forums
by Djackx67 · 2025-07-31 · 7 replies
Hi there, I’m not quite sure how to introduce this topic...

Let’s just say that since Covid—and the shutdown of VF—Facebook travel groups have exploded, while travel forums (VF or Le Forum du Routard) are much less active than they used to be.

And that’s where I realize (maybe it’s just my impression) that the average traveler seems to need assistance with *every* little detail... When I look at the questions posted in travel groups on social media—oh my goodness, we’re really not in the same traveler universe. You might think I’m being harsh, even condescending toward the overwhelming majority of travelers, but at the end of the day, travel forums still inspire way more and are much more geared toward long-term travelers, those who set off on adventures, who have the traveler’s soul—rather than those asking what clothes to pack for Bogotá or whether the weather will be nice in Mexico from April 18 to 30...

I’m just noticing that travelers who have the time and love to improvise their trips are becoming really rare...

For a travel aficionado like me, it’s kind of sad to see such a demand for hand-holding... but I guess it fits with our times.

There, I said it!
What are some good trekking routes in the Vosges?
by Saispasmoi · 2025-07-18 · 8 replies
hi there I live near Dole, so not too far away, and I sometimes go hiking (Camino de Santiago, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, etc.), and I’d love it if someone could suggest a trek in the Vosges—I really don’t know the area well. (Yeah, I know, I’m a little embarrassed about that.) If you could recommend a nice route. Arrival by car or train, doesn’t matter. Thanks so much!
1 month in Indonesia with kids: which beach and snorkeling-focused island?
by Angeange · 2025-05-27 · 9 replies
hi fellow travelers I really need your help to plan our trip. A little background: we’re a family of 2 adults and 2 kids aged 11 and 12. We’re used to traveling independently—no guide. We’re planning a 1-month trip this summer (August) to Indonesia, but we’re unsure which island would suit us best. We’ve already been to Bali and don’t want to go back. We land in Jakarta and plan to fly to one or two islands the next day. We especially love the sea and snorkeling. We’ve already visited plenty of temples, mountain hikes (I can’t do those anymore after a serious fracture), and seen orangutans. As you’ve probably guessed, our thing is the big blue and waterfalls. So, what to choose between Lombok, Sulawesi, Flores, and Sumatra for a month? Which island is the most beach and snorkeling-focused based on your experience? We can take flights, boats, and rent a car—no guide needed. Thank you a thousand times for your valuable tips!
Questions about visiting Egypt with kids
by Kinou73 · 2025-05-19 · 5 replies
Hi everyone, We’re two families planning a trip to Egypt with our kids during the autumn 2025 holidays. Our youngest will be 5 1/2 at the time. Do you think this is a good idea? Is a guide absolutely necessary? We were hoping to travel independently (4 adults and 4 kids).

Here’s what I had in mind—let me know if this seems doable or if I’m way off 😉 - Day 1: Cairo (Khan el Khalili souk, Saladin Citadel, and maybe a museum if possible) - Day 2: Saqqara necropolis - Day 3: Giza Plateau - Day 5: Fly to Luxor and visit Luxor Temple in the evening - Day 6: Visit Karnak Temple early in the morning, relax in the afternoon, and a felucca ride in the evening - Day 7: Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut Temple - Day 8: Hot-air balloon ride and Medinet Habu Temple - Day 9: Bus to the Red Sea for diving and chilling until our return flight.

I tried to leave some downtime for the kids, but I’m not sure how realistic the visiting times are. Thanks so much for your thoughts!!

Route 66: Is it better to do it in an SUV or a camper van?
by Kate08000 · 2025-05-12 · 15 replies
Hi everyone,

We’re planning a road trip on Route 66 in 2027 with our two kids, who’ll be 7 and 4 years old.

My husband would prefer to do it in an SUV, while I’d rather go in a camper van.

What are the pros and cons of each option?

Thanks for your input!
What type of car for a trip to South Africa with 5 people?
by Shanty · 2025-04-23 · 11 replies
Hi everyone, we're planning a trip for August (Drakensberg, St Lucia, Blyde, Kruger, Marakele). There will be 4 adults and an 11-year-old child. That’s the intro!

Our issue is choosing the right vehicle. With luggage plus food for picnics and breakfasts, we need space. And since we’ll be driving for several hours, I’d prefer not to be squished with 3 in the back.

So, what would you recommend? An SUV? A van? And where should we rent from if you have any great tips—I’m all ears.

Thanks everyone

9-Day Itinerary for Borneo
by Garazi64 · 2025-02-04 · 12 replies
Hi there! We’ll be in Singapore for a few days and have 9 days off from there. We’d love to visit Borneo, obviously not everything since we only have 9 days. Ideally, we’d like to spend the last 2 days near the sea in Sabah. Of course, we know we’ll only be able to see a small part of Borneo, but the logistics seem a bit tricky in such a short time.

There’s so much to do that I’m feeling a little overwhelmed. Any feedback from people who know the area (I imagine not many have been there for such a short trip...) would be great! Thanks!
White as snow: February 2025 friendly photo contest
by Attila · 2025-02-02 · 87 replies
I could just as easily have written white as marble, white as salt, white as coconut milk...

This month’s theme is white in every way imaginable.

Not just a little touch in the top right corner of the photo!

Nor a white square on a white background...

Also, black and white won’t be allowed.

For the rest, I’ll let the voters be the sole judges of whether the theme is respected!

I’m now borrowing Ragamuffin’s wording for the rules:

Every VF member can submit up to 3 photos, until Sunday, February 23 at 11:59 PM, Clermont-Ferrand time.

Each photo must be posted in a separate message, with its number (1, 2, or 3).

Don’t forget to add a little explanation (comment, location, etc.).

Voting:

Every VF member can vote for the 3 photos they think are the best, based on their own criteria and the theme.

Voting will take place from Monday, February 24 to Friday, February 28 at 2:00 PM, Clermont-Ferrand time.

The chosen photos should be listed in order of preference: - 1st photo: 3 points - 2nd: 2 points - 3rd: 1 point

The winner is the author of the photo with the most points.

Results will be published on February 28 in the late afternoon. In case of a tie, the number of first-place votes will decide. The winner will have the honor of organizing March’s contest.

Photos that have already been nominated (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) in another contest are not eligible to participate in this one.

The off-topic contest discussion is happening here
Tips for a 9-day itinerary in southern Morocco
by Pofomax · 2025-01-31 · 54 replies
Hi there!

As mentioned in a previous post, we're heading to Morocco in April for 9 days instead of the originally planned 7.

Here's the itinerary I've mapped out to ideally have a complete trip, but I think it might be too ambitious. What do you think? Here's the itinerary (click)

For those who can't open the link: Marrakech (the afternoon of our arrival + 1 day, we’ve already been there without the kids, the goal is not to stay too long) – night Aït Ben Haddou Ouarzazate Skoura – night Oasis de Fint Dadès Gorges Tinghir – night Merzouga – night Zagora – night M’hamid – ideally a night in the desert Agdz Marrakech – night (itinerary via Telouet)

What do you think of this plan? Will it feel too rushed, or is it manageable? Since we don’t know the places, it’s hard to tell if we’ll want to stop everywhere along the way or if there’s enough time to spend at each spot. I’ve included some night-stop assumptions (1 or 2 nights).

We’d love to hear your thoughts! We’re traveling with my wife, a 13-year-old teen, and a 10-year-old. We’ll have our own rental car.

Thanks! !
Biking Across New York State on the Empire State Trail
by Sarana · 2024-11-08 · 19 replies
From Buffalo to New York City, the Empire State Trail is a 900 km route specifically designed for biking, with 75% on dedicated bike paths.

A special train with bike spaces runs almost the entire route. First along the Erie Canal to Albany, then through the Hudson Valley all the way to the tip of Manhattan. This lets you skip sections and also return to your starting point without having to take a flight. Just be aware that bike spaces need to be reserved and can fill up during peak times. In June, no problem though.

This aspect really appealed to me, since my last trip had kinda put me off biking in the US. But here, 75% on dedicated paths, plus that legendary finish in NYC with your bike—I couldn’t resist celebrating my 70th birthday this way.

https://empiretrail.ny.gov/map Two branches to reach NYC: from Buffalo (mostly on dedicated paths) or from Montreal (mostly on roads) The route was developed in just three years. While it’s popular with cyclists on certain stretches near cities, those who bike the whole thing are still pretty rare. It’s true that the scenery isn’t exactly breathtaking, and some sections—especially along the Erie Canal—can feel a bit tedious, though they’re very easy since there’s no elevation.

The trail starts in Buffalo, but since my bus from Toronto goes straight to Niagara, I’ll be starting at the falls instead. Plus, that’s where the direct train to NYC departs from (and arrives at).
MSC Lirica Cruise in April 2025 with stops in Kotor, Mykonos, Santorini, and Ancona

Hello everyone, So happy to be back on this Forum! We’re heading off on another cruise—our 7th—after a 5-year break... We’ll be leaving from Venice on April 26th with stops in Kotor, Mykonos, Santorini, and Ancona. Could you help me plan the stops by sharing tips, tricks, and advice? For those who already know me, you know we prefer not to take the cruise line’s excursions but instead organize everything ourselves. Thanks in advance to everyone, and looking forward to chatting with you all!
Your thoughts on my 14-day South Africa itinerary for a senior traveler
by Soulfull · 2024-10-11 · 51 replies
Hello, I’m taking advantage of the forum reopening to ask this question:

For her 70th birthday, my mom will receive—as a gift—a trip to South Africa at the end of May 2025. We’ll arrive and depart (13 nights later) from JNB on Air France AF990/AF995. We’ll obviously rent a car for certain parts of the trip. I’ve been to the Cape Town area and as far as Agulhas twice, but she’s never been to South Africa before. She might enjoy a day or two of safari, but it’s not a priority for her. I’m well aware that trying to pack in too much is risky, which is why I’m looking for your advice on itineraries, safety, and health (status of the Marburg virus). So far, which combinations of these visits (in no particular order) would be doable and most enjoyable for her at a reasonable pace:

1-day excursion to Pilanesberg Park (+ Hartbeespoort on the way back if possible), self-drive or with a tour guide? 2 nights around the Panorama Route self-driving Garden Route from/to George/PLZ for 5 nights (what are the must-sees for a first-timer with so little time?) Wine region for 2 nights (is it worth doing both the Stellenbosch bus tour and the Franschhoek Wine Tram the next day, or vice versa)—she loves good wine! Cape Town for 2 nights (is it worth stopping at the Cape of Good Hope if—only if—you’ve maybe already been to Agulhas?).

This would give a final itinerary like this:

Day 1: Morning arrival in JNB—rest day/to be defined Day 2: Guided game drive excursion to Pilanesberg Park Day 3: Flight JNB–Port Elizabeth, pick up rental car, drive to Tsitsikamma Day 4–6: Garden Route: activities to be defined Day 7: Transfer to Franschhoek: Wine Tram in the afternoon Day 8: Taxi to Stellenbosch for the Vine Hopper bus tour Day 9–11: Transfer to Cape Town: activities to be defined Day 12: Flight from Cape Town to Hoedspruit or Nelspruit Day 13: Visit the Panorama Route Day 14: Flight from Hoedspruit or Nelspruit to JNB, then evening flight back to France

Given the time spent on the Garden Route, what are the must-sees? Same question for the Panorama Route? In general, she prefers beautiful walks with incredible landscapes/views and cultural visits over big cats, but it would be a shame not to see some local wildlife like meerkats, whales (I doubt it in May), or penguins during her stay! There you go—feel free to critique (not too harshly, though😛)/advise/improve. Thanks in advance! 🙂

Mexique fin janvier 2021 English translation pending
by Sheneneh · 2020-08-17 · 20 replies
Salut a tous,

Merci :)
Ouest américain (voiture puis RV) juillet 2021 English translation pending
by WahaSabine · 2020-06-14 · 31 replies

by Athenais1012 · 2020-05-14 · 8 replies

Costa Rica: Two Incredible Weeks
by SwissKiwi · 2020-04-21 · 17 replies
Hi everyone,

Taking advantage of the quiet days that Covid-19 has brought us, I thought it was time to share my experience in Costa Rica. Once again, I found a lot of helpful information on this forum, so if I can help in return, I’d be happy to!

Here’s some general info: - 2-week trip in a 4x4 during the dry season, from 01/27 to 02/10 - Two 27-year-old travelers, no kids And here’s our itinerary: Day 1: Arrival in San José Day 2: San José - Tortuguero Day 3: Tortuguero Day 4: Tortuguero - Arenal Day 5: Arenal Day 6: Arenal - Tenorio Day 7: Tenorio - Monteverde Day 8: Monteverde - Quepos Day 9: Quepos Day 10: Quepos - Uvita Day 11: Uvita - Sierpe - Bahía Drake Day 12 & 13: Bahía Drake Day 14: Bahía Drake - San José Day 15: Flight back to Switzerland...

Of course, we had to make choices—it’s impossible to see everything in two weeks—but honestly, we’re *really* happy with our route. We even saw more than we expected!

So, ready 😉? Here we go!

DAY 1 – Arrival in San José

After a smooth Zürich-Frankfurt-San José flight, we finally made it to San José 😎!! After months of planning and excitement, we’re here! Since we’d booked a 4x4 with the ToutCostaRica agency for the next day, we stayed at one of their hotels, the Melrost. One of their agents was there to pick us up at the airport and take us to the hotel, which is really close. It was early evening, and it was already dark, so no exploring the city tonight. We treated ourselves to a first local beer on the terrace, listening to the birds, and then headed straight to bed.

Hotel Melrost: A simple little building, but super convenient for just one night in San José (well, Alajuela) before moving on. The room was great, and breakfast was excellent!

DAY 2 – Off to Tortuguero

This morning, we had a meet-up at the hotel with ToutCostaRica, where we’d rented our 4x4. They held a briefing in small groups for all the car renters to discuss our routes, tips, the country, and other advice. We found it interesting, but *way* too long! They could’ve kept it shorter—reminding us to wear sunscreen in the sun and not to leave valuables in the car seems pretty obvious... Anyway, after a while, we thanked them for all the advice and set off in our brand-new Toyota Rav4! The rental went perfectly with TCR—everything was great. After leaving the traffic jams of San José behind, we hit some pretty little roads (some in better shape than others) until we reached La Pavona. There, we left our car in a guarded parking lot and took a boat (departure at 3:00 PM) to Tortuguero on the Caribbean coast. Just the boat ride was amazing—we were lucky enough to spot a basilisk, iguanas, and tons of birds. After 40 minutes, we docked right at the pier of our hotel, Casa Marbella. After dropping off our stuff in the room, we headed out to explore the village via its one main street. Lively, colorful, and hot! Since we didn’t have anything else planned for the day, we went back to the hotel terrace to enjoy a juice by the canals. Then, a quick dinner and off to bed to be fresh for tomorrow morning!

Casa Marbella: Really nice, with a convenient pier/terrace for arriving and leaving by boat. Breakfast was absolutely delicious! The room was good, though the AC wasn’t working.

More to come soon!

Bonjour,
