nouveau sur le forum, j'aimerai partager ma passion du voyage à vtt. Mon crédo: le voyage léger, très léger (5 kg maxi) qui tiennent dans un petit sac au dos. Ainsi, l'aspect ludique du VTT est préservé et l'aventure prend tout son sens. Cette démarche me permet de traverser de vastes zones avec beaucoup de confort.

Mes terrains de jeux se trouvent un peu partout (France, Croatie, Tunisie, Mali) mais je ne vis que pour Madagascar.

Je rentre d'un séjour découverte du Burkina et me voilà sous le charme. Ma vie a enfin trouvée matière à réflexion. Je repart début Janvier, pour prendre des repères et espérer m'installer dans ce pays . Je viens de visualiser une cassette vidéo ayant attrait au Fossa, animal que les malgaches compare au Loup Garou. En fait, je voudrais positionner sur la carte de Madagascar ce village qui est le départ vers une réserve naturelle intégrale ou la faune et la flore sont exceptionnelles! Quelqu'un a t-il déjà été dans cet endroit qui se situe au Nord-Ouest de l'île.

Entrée depuis peu sur le forum, je passe de superbes moments à tous vous lire et que de choses intéressantes . Je voyage ainsi et je découvre d'autre portes pour d'autres sistes.

Nous escomptons partir mon mari et moi car notre fils trop jeune et pas du tout transportable en janvier 2004 pour MADA. Nous aimerions faire une mini croisière avec Daniel SOCONET qui détient une goelette en bois et bivouacs mais impossible de le joindre par fax qui connait l'indicatif dde MADA.

J'ai pu lire à plusieurs reprises que des gens avaient des astuces pour payer moins cher leur billet d'avion pour TANA! Alors j'attends vos réponses et qui aurait une adresse fiable d'un guide sur place avec voiture 4x4 puisuqe si nous y allons en Janvier ce sera la saison des pluies.

Je suis aussi à la recherche des coordonnées de la cocoteraie Robert tout en gaut de l'île de Ste Marie. Pas la luxueuse boîte à toutou, celle d'à côté. Qui aurait ça dans ces souvenirs.

Je suis allée consulter plusieurs carnet de voyage à propos de MADA mais ils datent tous de 97 ou 99.

Qui aurait la gentillesse de me faire parvenir par mail leur carnet de route, des idées pour faire la route du sud, des adresses infaillibles où la table est bonne même si c'est dans une case indigène' Je prends tout car j'ai soif d'informations sur toute l'île de MADA.

j'ai un petit garçon métis malagache, je l'elève seule mais garde un très bon contact avec sa famille patenelle.

Celle-ci me reclame de plus en plus d'amener mon fils a Mada pour le presenter au reste de la famille.

Bien entendu cela m'attire, mais je me pose beaucoup de questions!

mon fils à 2 ans, je pense attendre au moins ces 4 ans pour partir.

J'avais déjà inscris un message similaire mais la reponse obtenue diverge completement de l'avis dela famille, j'aurais donc besoin de plus d'avis!

Tte sa famille est porteuse sene du palu ils me disent doc que mon fils doit être immunisé!?

D'autre part, ils me disent que le palu est bcp pluis présent dans les îles que sur tana la capiltale.

D'après eux le virus est casi absent sur les terres!?

Je pensais commencer par emmener mon fils en Afrique pour tester avec lui comme il supporte les grands voyages, sénegal, burkina ou mali?

I’m diving into planning a trip I’ve dreamed of for a long time: crossing Africa from North to South solo, with a departure planned for October 2025 for about 8-9 months. I’m leaving from Paris with a starting budget of around 7,000 €, aiming to supplement it with work along the way.

My planned route: Senegal → Gambia → Sierra Leone/Liberia (if logistics work out) → Côte d'Ivoire → Ghana → Togo → Benin → Cameroon → Gabon → Kenya (Masai Mara) → Uganda (Bwindi gorillas) → Rwanda → Tanzania (Kili + Serengeti + Zanzibar) → Mozambique → Malawi → Zambia (Victoria Falls) → Botswana → Namibia → South Africa (Cape Town). Madagascar as a bonus if timing/budget allows from Mozambique.

I’m not a backpacking newbie—I’ve done several trips in Europe and I’m familiar with the lifestyle, hostels, local transport, etc. But Africa is my first big adventure on this continent, and I’ve got some very concrete questions I’d love feedback on from people who’ve been there.

🎭 My big dilemma: flexibility vs. pre-organized work

What matters most to me is NOT rushing through. If I feel good somewhere, I’ll stay longer. If a region doesn’t click, I’ll cut it short. That seems totally incompatible with having pre-booked work or volunteer gigs, yet I need that income to stretch my budget.

I’m torn between two approaches:

Option A: The mixed rhythm: 3-4 weeks of volunteering in a country (free accommodation, full immersion), then 1-2 countries in classic backpacker "vacation" mode, then another mission somewhere, etc. This gives a breathing rhythm and avoids burnout from non-stop volunteering.

Option B: The continuous flow: finding gigs as I go, from the previous country, contacting hosts 2-3 weeks in advance with a flexible date range. Keeping maximum spontaneity but never arriving anywhere without a safety net.

Have you tried either? What actually works on the ground in Africa?

🌍 What I’m really looking for in this trip

Not just the classic tourist spots. I want to see the country as it is—eating at local joints, taking local transport (bush taxis, minibuses, sept-places), staying with locals when possible. The big reserves and safaris are part of the plan (Masai Mara, Serengeti, Okavango), but just as much as hanging out in a residential neighborhood in Dakar, understanding how people really live.

Volunteering or work interests me for that reason too (not just for free lodging, but because it’s the deepest way to dive into a country). Working at a school in Ghana, a lodge in Kenya, a permaculture farm in Mozambique—I see it as an immersion that classic tourism can’t offer.

🎒 My concrete questions

About Workaway and Worldpackers: I’ve read a lot but would love on-the-ground feedback, especially for West and East Africa. Are hosts really flexible with dates for long-term travelers? Do the advertised gigs match reality? Are there alternative platforms you’d recommend for Africa specifically (I’ve heard of Help Exchange, WWOOF Africa, local networks…)?

About "off-platform" jobs: Is it really doable to find informal work on the spot (bars, restaurants, lodges) without prior contacts? In which countries/cities is this most accessible for a French speaker without a local work permit?

About logistics between countries: For those who’ve done the West Coast (Senegal → Ghana → Benin), how did you cross borders? Direct buses or local shared taxis at each border? And for the jump from Central Africa → Kenya, is a flight mandatory, or are there feasible overland routes?

About Madagascar: I’m considering adding it from Mozambique (flight Maputo or Beira → Tana). Those who’ve done it backpacker-style on a tight budget—is 3-4 weeks doable, or is it too short to be worth it?

I’m open to all tips, experiences, warnings, and pleasant surprises. And if you’ve got trusted local contacts (Workaway hosts, associations, community lodges), I’m all ears!

We’ll either drive for part of the trip or take flights. We’ve heard all sorts of things about required vaccines and medications (is anti-malarial mandatory?). Hi everyone, After a break of a few years, I’m heading back to Madagascar this October. I’d like to travel from Diego to Maroantsetra via Cap Masoala as much as possible by bike—it’s my favorite way to travel. My questions: for the return trip to Diego once I’m in Maroantsetra, is there a possibility to take a flight, since the road option only starts much further south than Tamatave? Or where can I rent or buy a decent bike between Diego and Cap Masoala? For this bike trip, I’m open to any info—I love traveling rough. Someone might even want to join me on this adventure.

After that, I’d also like info on the northeast part (Mozambique Channel side) of Diego, which I’d like to explore by bike as well.

I was caught off guard when the Malagasy consulate in Scandinavia informed me they don’t issue entry visas for Madagascar—what’s the point of a consulate, I wonder! They advised me to apply at the Malagasy embassy in London. So, I started filling out the online form, but the price for the visa made me do a double-take: nearly 200 €!

But apparently, you can also get it on arrival! Has anyone tried this before? I’d love to know if the process takes a long time (I’ll be landing in Nosy Be, exhausted after nearly 15 hours of travel), what the cost is, and—since corruption isn’t just a word—whether you absolutely have to grease the palm of the official(s). This is because I almost took the next flight back when I arrived in a country I won’t name. Even though all my documents were in order—passport, visa, vaccinations, hotel reservation—the immigration officer initially refused to stamp my passport. I later found out I was supposed to slip at least $10 into the document when presenting it... Thanks! /d

Is it better to apply for an e-visa (and if so, which official website?) or just queue up on arrival? It seems there are "unofficial"—and therefore fraudulent—sites out there, and that you’ll have to queue either way (which I’m not thrilled about since I’m arriving at 11 PM). What do you think?

Hello, We’ll soon be moving to Madagascar long-term. As a French national, I need to obtain a short-stay visa that can be converted to a long-stay one. To do this, I have to send the required documents to the Madagascar embassy in Paris. No issues with that procedure so far. If I get this visa, once I arrive in Madagascar, I’ll need to provide the same documents to the Ministry of the Interior in Anosy. I’m trying to find an email address or website for the Ministry to check which documents I need to submit (I think they ask for additional ones).
