Budget
Overall, Central America is not too expensive to travel in, although it's true that the many nature and sports activities (diving, surfing, canopy tours, etc.) can quickly inflate your budget. Outside of hyper-tourist areas, Costa Rica and Mexico remain the most expensive destinations.
Daily "backpacker" budget per person based on two people:
- Belize: 35 to 50 €/day.
- Costa Rica: 35 to 50 €/day.
- El Salvador: 25 to 35 €/day.
- Guatemala: 25 to 35 €/day.
- Honduras: 25 to 35 €/day.
- Mexico: 40 to 50 €/day.
- Nicaragua: 25 to 35 €/day.
- Panama: 25 to 40 €/day.
What can be expensive:
- Staying long in beach resorts, especially during peak season.
- All-inclusive organised excursions.
- Flights from Europe in high season.
- Admission fees to sites if you plan to visit many.
What can be inexpensive:
- Eating local food.
- Local transport and Mexican low-cost airlines.
