El Salvador is a Central American country bordered by Guatemala, Honduras, and the Pacific Ocean. Despite its small size, it is the most densely populated country in Central America. Its capital is San Salvador. The colonial cities of San Salvador and San Sebastián, Mayan archaeological sites, parks, and volcanoes are the country's main attractions. Most of the territory is volcanic; the country is crossed by a cordillera of volcanoes. The highest mountains are Santa Ana at 2,365 meters, San Vicente at 2,182 meters, and San Salvador at 1,943 meters. Due to volcanic activity, the land, covered by a thick layer of lava and volcanic ash, is highly fertile, particularly for coffee cultivation. The lowlands extend both north and south of the mountainous cordillera.
