Flying to Nicaragua
Location Map of Nicaragua
General Information
Of the dozen or so airports in the country, only the capital Managua’s has an international role. With 1.2 million passengers per year, it is one of the most important in Central America, even though its traffic is limited to around twenty destinations, all within the Americas. That said, Nicaragua’s "air travel landscape" could change in the near future, given plans to expand or internationalise some of its other local airports, starting with the one at the beach resort of Montelimar on the Pacific coast.
Nearby international airports in neighbouring countries—Liberia and San José (Costa Rica) and Tegucigalpa (Honduras)—can be a good alternative for reaching Nicaragua, especially Costa Rica’s capital, which is much better connected than Managua.
Types of Flights
Local Airlines
Until a new national airline emerges—Nicaragua hasn’t had one since 1991—the country relies on the local subsidiary of Colombia’s Avianca. Avianca Nicaragua is, in fact, the country’s only carrier... even though its flights are actually operated by La Costeña, an airline it absorbed some time ago but which has kept its name. Based in Managua (with Bluefields as a secondary hub), it only operates domestic flights, except for the route to Tegucigalpa in Honduras.
Charter, Scheduled, and Low-Cost Flights
Nicaragua is a destination served almost exclusively by scheduled flights.
Promotions and Special Offers
Promotions for Nicaragua aren’t unique to the country but reflect the specific deals airlines offer across their networks, which include Nicaragua.
From Europe
There are no direct flights from France or even Europe (including Madrid) to Nicaragua. All options—whether from US or (so-called) European airlines—involve one or two stopovers in Europe, the US, and/or Central America. As a result, the total journey time is long, sometimes very long, ranging from at least 15 hours to nearly a day and a half, including layovers. Prices: 600/900 €.
Choosing the Best Option
If price is a key factor, consider the total duration and, if opting for US carriers, the requirements of transiting through the United States. Compare US airlines (such as American, United, Aeromexico) with European ones like Iberia, Air France (via Panama), or British Airways, which typically appear in search results. Alternatively, a flight to neighbouring Costa Rica might be a better solution, depending on your travel plans.
From the Americas
Quebec
Air Transat offers charter flights to Managua, particularly for all-inclusive travellers heading to Montelimar, the beach resort near the capital.
United States
Unsurprisingly, the US has the best connections, not least because it is home to a significant "Nica" community. Atlanta (Delta), Florida (American, Spirit, Avianca), Los Angeles (seasonal Delta), and Houston (United, Spirit) all offer flights to and from Managua.
Central America
For flights to and from Managua:
- Costa Rica: Avianca + Copa + Nature Air.
- El Salvador: Avianca.
- Guatemala City: Copa.
- Honduras: Avianca.
- Mexico: Aeromexico.
- Panama City: Conviasa + Copa.
Other Destinations
Caracas is the only South American city with connections (Conviasa), while Havana (Aero Caribbean) is the sole Caribbean destination served.
