Mainland Belize

Xunantunich, Belize
Xunantunich, Belize

Wedged between Guatemala and Mexico, this flat, marshy region with only a few elevations in its southwestern part is largely covered in forests. It’s here, partly inland, that you’ll find several Mayan sites worth visiting (Altun Ha, Caracol, El Pilar, Lamanai...), as well as the coast, which, like the offshore islands, offers stunning beaches and great opportunities for exploring the marine life.

Belize Cayes

Caye Caulker, Belize
Caye Caulker, Belize

The cayes are small, low-lying islands made mostly of sand and coral. Over four hundred of them, in all sizes, lie off the coast of Belize in the Caribbean Sea, surrounded by the second-largest coral reef in the world. True paradises for divers, with the added bonus of beautiful beaches, several of these islands—like Ambergris (the largest), Caye Caulker, Caye Chapel, etc.—have become major tourist destinations, some catering to the upscale market.
