Thai Malaria Warning
Early rains and flooding have increased the risk of malaria and dengue fever in Northern
Thailand, including areas bordering Burma, Thai health authorities warned today. Of the 70 cases recorded so far this year, most are in the districts of Chom Thong and Fang, bordering Burma’s Shan State. Fang is an agriculture area where several thousand Shan migrant from Burma are employed. In
Chiang Rai Province, bordering the Burmese frontier town Tachilek, 32 people have contracted malaria so far this year, compared with 28 in the same period last year. Most had contracted the disease in Burma or
Laos, a health official said.
Dr Thepnaruemit Methanawin, head of
Chiang Rai’s public health office, said health controls had been stepped up in border areas of Northern
Thailand’s Mae Fa Luang district because Burmese people with dengue fever were crossing to
Thailand for medical treatment, according to the Thai news website Manager.
