Hi there, We’re planning a trip to China from May 5th to June 3rd, 2025.

We’re traveling independently using local transport—this will be our third trip to China since the 15-day visa exemption and our first since the 30-day visa exemption in 2025. We’ve drafted an itinerary and would love to hear your thoughts on the destinations and the length of our stops. We’re also looking for hotel recommendations.

Day 1: Montpellier to Beijing with Air France, Beijing – 6 days, including a trip to the Great Wall at Badaling, Beijing to Datong, Datong – 2 days, Datong to Pingyao, Pingyao – 2 days, Pingyao to Xi’an, Xi’an – 3 days, Xi’an to Chengdu, Chengdu – 2 days, Chengdu to Chongqing, Chongqing – 2 days, Chongqing to Changsha, Changsha to Zhangjiajie – 2 days, Changsha to Shanghai, Shanghai – 2 days (we’ve already been to Shanghai in May 2024). Shanghai to Montpellier.

Thanks for your feedback and tips! Alod

I might not be the best person to give the best advice since I’ve only been to China twice, and that was nearly 20 years ago—things have changed a lot since then... But we’re planning a third trip of 30 days in October/November, and obviously, I’ve been doing a ton of research on itineraries! For us, we’ll mostly be exploring Gansu Province and the Zhangjiajie region. If possible, we’ll make a quick flight detour to see the Yuanyang rice terraces and Jianshui. So, I’ll share my humble thoughts... The first part up to Xi’an looks well-planned. 6 days in Beijing? Sure, why not. Two nights in Datong and Pingyao, and three nights in Xi’an—perfect. You might even have time for a day trip to Huashan. Then, two days in Chengdu. Chengdu is nice, but it’s not exactly a picturesque city. It’s worth visiting if you’re doing a broader trip through Sichuan—there are *so* many places to see there, but that’s a whole other trip. I don’t know Chongqing and don’t plan to go, so I can’t really say... 😇 Zhangjiajie: 2 days seems too short. It’s recommended to spend 3 days in the park. There’s also Tianmen Mountain nearby and the old town of Fenghuang (which is probably very touristy too). You can head straight to Shanghai from Zhangjiajie or Tongren, which isn’t far from Fenghuang. No need to go back through Changsha. By cutting back a little on the days in Beijing and maybe skipping the Chengdu extension (and Chongqing?), you could add more time in Zhangjiajie and the surrounding area, and even squeeze in a day or two at Wutaishan on your way between Datong and Pingyao.

Hi there, I really appreciate your feedback and comments. We’ll take them into account and spend a bit more time looking into the Zhangjiajie area. Nothing’s set in stone yet, but we’ll definitely need to sort it out before we leave—at least to lock in hotels and transport. Wishing you a year filled with travels and adventures! Alod

Anne-Claire is right about Chengdu: it’s a good starting point for visiting Sichuan, but as a mid-route stop on your trip, it’s not that interesting. Same for Chongqing—I’ve never read or heard anything that would make me want to go there. In my opinion, you can easily save days by skipping these two stops.

Hello!

Just a little reminder: just because we’re not familiar with a place doesn’t mean it’s not worth the detour. Right now, I’m seeing tons of videos about Chongqing, and I really think the city is absolutely worth the trip ;) (And it’s actually pretty well-known, by the way!)

I’m wondering how much time to spend there—2 days seems about right to me. If anyone has any firsthand experience or tips, I’d love to hear them!

Il y a aussi des vlogs sur Tokyo pour le moment... Enjoy ;)

That makes sense, but given the size of the city, you really need 4 or 5 days, not just 2. It’d be a shame to make such a detour for so little time...
