Hello and happy to be back on this forum! We’re planning our trip to southern Vietnam in February. We visited central Vietnam two years ago. For now, based on reading various posts, we’ve drafted the following itinerary, keeping in mind that we travel by public transport and rent bikes or motorbikes when needed. We also like to take our time! So far, we’ve only booked our flight tickets: 1 Paris – HO CHI MINH 2 & 3 Visit HO CHI MINH 4 Day trip to Cu Chi 5 Transfer Ho Chi Minh / Cat Tien 6 & 7 Cat Tien 8 Transfer Cat Tien / Cai Be 9 & 10 Cai Be 11 Transfer Cai Be / Vinh Long or Binh Island 12 Vinh Long or Binh Island 13 Day trip to Sa Dec 14 Bus transfer Vinh Long / Can Tho 15 & 16 Can Tho 17 Transfer Can Tho / Chau Doc 18 & 19 Chau Doc 20 Transfer Chau Doc / Ha Tien 21 & 22 Ha Tien 23 Boat transfer to PHU QUOC 24, 25 & 26 PHU QUOC 27 Flight to Paris

Actually, we’re on a rhythm of 1 transfer day and 2 visit days, which doesn’t fully satisfy us. That’s why we’re wondering: Is it possible to stay in one accommodation for visits to Cai Be, Binh Island, and Vinh Long (including our day trip to Sa Dec)? Do you see any other ways to adjust the itinerary? Any oversights? We also still need to look into the transfer details. Thanks for your tips! fg

Hello, I think that’s a lot of time in the Mekong Delta. We stayed there for 2 or 3 days and found that was enough. Personally, I found this region less interesting than the others (southern and central Vietnam). Of course, this is very subjective. It’s best to wait for other responses from people who know the country better.

PS: Check out what’s being said here about Phu Quoc https://voyageforum.com/forum/delta-mekong-phu-quoc-ce-n-est-pas-coup-coeur-d8735776/

Hi, While planning the itinerary, I had a bit of the same feeling, but we’d planned 3 trips to Vietnam!! And since we’re pretty contemplative..........

Yeah, I get it... I’m pretty contemplative myself, but we’re all more or less interested in what the places we visit give us to reflect on. I didn’t find the Mekong Delta uninteresting, just a bit similar across the different areas, which led to a certain monotony.

On the other hand, even back when I visited Vietnam, what I’d seen of Phu Quoc (in photos) and what several travelers thought about it didn’t really make me want to go. Especially when you’ve seen other islands in Southeast Asia.

Hi,

If you only want to visit the south, it’s not a bad focus. An Binh is really nice for spending 2 days and relaxing. I preferred Con Dao Island—calm and peaceful—over Phu Quoc, which felt too built-up for my taste and like a big beach resort. But that’s just a personal preference.

Is there enough to do in Con Dao for several days?

Easy to find accommodation, even on weekends?

Thanks

for Phu Quoc, I agree with you based on what I’ve read on the forum since planning my itinerary. For An Binh, I was wondering if it’s easy to get from the island to Cai Be and Vinh Long.

Hi, We spent a week in Phu Quoc three years ago and didn’t like it at all—the beach was full of trash, there was a small oil slick near the port, and most of all, they were concreting like crazy to develop mass tourism. Maybe worth seeing once. For a beach vacation, I’d recommend Thailand or heading up to Hoi An instead. We were in northern Vietnam last week. 😉
Cordialement, Patrick.

It’s just because we wanted to stay in the south. We were around Quy Nhon three years ago, and it was a great spot. Though there were also a lot of concrete areas along that coast. I’ll check out Con Dao, but I think I read that the sea is rough there in February?

Vinh Long is really easy—there’s a ferry that crosses the Mekong.

It all depends on what you're looking for. It's a very peaceful island, but apart from the calm and the walks, there's nothing else. That's what suits me.

Good evening, I’m often in Con Dao in February or March, and the sea is calm during that time. I spend hours out at sea fishing...

Quy Nhon is also really nice, and with a motorbike, it’s easy to explore the surrounding areas. My favorite spot is the little fishing village of Bai Xep, where we stay at Haven Vietnam in the Hoa room facing the sea. On the hotel’s beachfront side, fishermen set up tables on the sand in the evening, and you can pick out shellfish or lobsters to enjoy. Grilled lobster with garlic butter, toes in the sand at sunset—pure bliss! 😋 I’ll be there next February! 😊

Hi Arnaud,

In Con Dao, we can recommend the very long and interesting hike in the nature reserve with its small museum at the entrance. But you’ve got to like walking. With a bit of luck, you might spot a dugong surfacing in the water, but you’ll need to be on a boat. They’re often found behind the small island where the turtles lay their eggs.

This is the fishing village we were in 3 years ago. From what I remember, they were building a resort at the end of the cove?

Good evening,

There is indeed a small, recent spring at the end of the little beach, behind the rocks, but last February it was empty—I passed by several days in a row on the bit of beach that might be private, but I never saw anyone. Everything was closed. However, Haven Vietnam was fully booked. I contacted them directly and booked very early to be sure I’d get the same room next February.

Best regards.
