Nous souhaitons partir en couple au mois de septembre pour 3 semaines,
Visiter 2 iles au max afin de limiter les déplacements inter-iles (sauf bali que nous connaissons déjà),
J'hésite entre Flores et ? Sumatra ? ou autre ? Sulawesi ? pour tout le séjour ...
J'ai lu que le Sulawesi n'était pas trop top sécurité en ce moment ...
Cet endroit à l 'air magnifique mais n'est ce pas trop difficile à explorer (chauffeur obligatoire ?)
Nous aimons les endroits pas trop touristiques, les belles plages (possibilité de dormir sur la plage même sans électricité ou en tente), trek (pas trop difficile nous ne sommes pas randonneurs confirmés), éventuellement une petite croisière ...

Sumatra en sept n'est pas la bonne période a cause des feux
Pour Flores c'est une très bonne période : beau temps, pas gd monde (mais est-ce qu'il y a des mois "touristiques" a Flores ?)
Sulawesi je viens de prendre mes billets pour sept, je pense que c'est correct pour le temps ... et pour la sécurité il parait que c'est redevenu OK 😏
Il reste encore plein de beaux endroits : Lombok, Sumba
Puisque vous connaissez Bali, allez 8j a Sumba et le reste a Flores/Komodo
Possibilité de rando faciles aux pays Ngadda, Mangarai ou vers le Kelimutu, iles désertes en sept ( bp - en été) a Riung, croisière EXTRAORDINAIRE ds le détroit de Komodo avec snorkeling incroyable, grandes plages désertes a Sumba ouest
Je pense que Sulawesi offre les même genre de possibilités ... mais je ne le vérifierai qu'en sept 😛

Flores est encore peu touristique (jusqu'a qd ?), peu d'hotels sauf Labuanbajo, pas bp habitée non plus, a peine qq gros bourgs + 2 petites villes (Ende et Maumere) ...
Excepté a Labuanbajo ou bp font juste un A-R en 2-3 j depuis Bali pour aller voir les dragons de Komodo (les iles de komodo et Rinca ne seront bientot plus qu'un parc d'attraction !), le reste de l'ile est quasi vide. cela me semble bien correspondre a ce que vous cherchez

Pourquoi on a choisi Sulawesi ?
car a priori cela regroupe tout ce qu'on aime :
- îles aux récifs coralliens pour se reposer qq jour en admirant la faune sous-marine. Et surtout pas encore envahies par les hotels en dur comme en Thailande
- richesse culturelle et diversité ethnique (Toraja, Bugis ...)
- montagnes recouvertes de jungle et rizières avec possibilité de balades tous niveaux
- pas encore très fréquentée
Il manque peut-être juste qqs temples hindous, bouddhistes ou grecs !!!
Comme on ne réserve rien d'autre que l'avion, on a juste une ébauche (pas très originale) pour l'instant :
arrivée Makassar, peut-etre région de Bira, Pays toraja, Togians, région de Palu (avec parc Tore Lindu ) ou région de Luwuk (départ de Palu ou Luwuk)
ou ds l'autre sens : région de Luwuk, Togians, Toraja, Bira, Makassar

Du snorkeling partout : au sud Bira et Selayar, au centre les Togians et région de Palu, au nord Bunaken et autres, au sud-est les Bandas
Les iles paradisiaques ont l'air nombreuses : on a choisi les Togians, les + faciles d'accès (pas si simple que cela 🤪 d'après ceux qui y sont allé)

non il y a plein de bus a Java, Bali, Lombok (on les prenait pour le trajets de - de 2h). Pour les longs trajets sur Java ou Flores ou ça tourne abominablement on louait une voiture avec chauffeur a la journée. Pas mal de vieux rafiots entre les iles

On est allé a Java-Est, 2 fois à Bali, Gilis, Lombok, Flores et l'archipel de Komodo ... on a tout aimé (a des degrés <> qd même) car bp de diversités. Je conseillerais qd même de ne pas commencer par Flores, la + sauvage ... a garder après 1 ou 2 voyages ds le coin , a coupler avec 3-4j de croisière ds l'archipel de Komodo pour plonger ou "snorkeler" au milieu e milliers de poissons et autres raies, requins ou tortues .. 😏 😏 😏

Et en 3 semaines de Makassar jusqu'aux Togians (en passant par Toraja, Lore Lindu etc) ça ne risque pas d'être un peu sportif ? Je te pose la question parce que Sulawesi était notre idée initiale pour juillet prochain mais en 3 semaines (c'est tout ce qu'on peut prendre) ça nous a paru trop ambitieux, voire quasi impossible si on tient compte de la réalité du réseau routier, des jours de passage du ferry etc. Du coup on s'est rabattu sur Bali et les Gili mais on n'abandonne pas totalement le projet, il est juste remis à plus tard, une autre année...

On a un aller pour Jakarta (on repart direct ss stop), car il y a bp + de vols pour Makassar que depuis KL
Pour le retour, on prend tjs un jour de battement (pb de vol ou autre) alors on repart de KL ou on peut passer une journée agréable, contrairement a Jakarta (deja testé 2 fois). Le prix du billet était le même, A-R pour KL ou Jakarta ou panacher les 2.
3 semaines a Sulawesi ? j’espère que ça ira .. de toute façon on fera comme toujours, on ajustera sur place en fc de la fatigue, des coups de coeurs, des pb de transports .... POur les courts trajets on prend le bus, mais au dela de 2h on loue une voiture avec chauffeur, c'est + cher mais tellement + confortable et rapide
A la louche on pensait : 1j pour aller au pays Toraja, 4/5j sur place, 1j pour lac Poso, 1 j sur place, 1j pour Ampana (ferry Togian), 6/7j Togian, 1j pour retour Palu, 0,5j Palu-Balkpapan-KL ou Palu-Makassar-KL, 1j a KL ==> total 15/16j
On zappe le nord .. pas le temps
Il reste 3/4j pour faire coincider les trajets avec les bateaux et pour avoir un peu de mou. Si une halte ou un trajet est + long que prévu, on raccourcit la suite. S'il reste finalement 2-3j, on se posera a coté de Palu d'ou on repart : parc Tore Lindu et faire du snorkeling a Tanjung Karan (a coté de Palu), il parait que c'est magnifique (même après les Togians)
Mais on fera peut-etre le trajet ds l'autre sens JKT-Palu (ou Luwuk)-Togian-Toraja-Makassar-KL : rien de fixé pour l'instant
Recontactes-moi après ce voyage (septembre c'est loin .... snif), je pourrais faire un CR détaillé avec ce qui est possible ou non

En fait si je comprends bien vous ne réserverez rien à l'avance, ni pour les guesthouses ni pour la loc de voiture/chauffeur mais vous aviserez sur place ? C'est vrai qu'on aurait pu le faire comme ça aussi mais en plein mois de juillet et avec notre fils ça nous paraissait un peu tendu. 🤪
Moi le truc qui me faisait le plus flipper c'est de rester coincés sur les îles vu que ça a l'air assez folklo les transports et du coup râter notre vol retour pour la France.

Je dis ça mais je sais ce que c'est que d'attendre un départ avec impatience. Dès que je reviens d'un voyage, a peine le pied posé sur le sol français que je pense au prochain départ (11 mois a chaque fois...).😊
pas de regrets a avoir : Flores et le reste sont magnifiques ... Sulawesi sera pour la prochaine fois, il faut tjs avoir un projet en tête 😏
Non on ne réserve rien (sauf exceptionnellement), mais depuis qqs années on part en sept et il n'y a pas gd monde a cette période. On trouve tjs un logement du 1er coup ds la catégorie recherchée en arrivant qq part ... et sans stresser 😊
Qd aux voitures, on prend au jour le jour , on en trouve partout et au pire on demande a l'hotel de nous en trouver. De +, qd on fait de l'itinérant avec arrêt de plusieurs jours (pour Flores, 3 j a Riung, 2j a Bajawa, a Sulawesi on fera idem au pays Toraja), ça évite de payer une voiture qui ne roule pas !
Tanjung Karan ? j'ai vu qq part qu'il y a des fond marins magnifiques a 1h de Palu (a Donggala) sur la cote (pas une ile) : ça permet d'avoir 2j de battement a un endroit sympa
On ira 1j ou 2 si on arrive en avance pour l'avion du retour, et si on reste + longtemps que prévu aux Togians a cause des dates de bateaux, on n'ira pas 😏
Et non ce ne sera pas Flores non plus cette année mais Bali, les Gili et un stop aux Perhentian avant le retour en France, on commence par le plus classique et le plus touristique pour notre 1ère fois en Indo.
Pour le prochain voyage on fera comme vous, au jour le jour... Flores, Sulawesi, Sumatra...on verra bien ! Tout nous fait envie !

mais commencer par le + classique Bali-Gilis est très bien (c'est ce qu'on a fait avec Java-Est en + et on a pas été déçu), c'est magnifique et il vaut mieux aller aux Gilis avant Komodo, Flores, Sulawesi les Perhantians, car ce sera crescendo pour les fonds marins
Les Perhantians sont un très bon choix (a condition de ne pas perdre trop de temps en venant de Bali), on a adoré 🙂

Si oui vous pouvez combiner Bira et Selayar dans votre itinéraire
Vous avez un bus qui part de Makassar a Bira et ensuite un ferry qui se rend à Selayar qui est une ile authentique , très belle plages de sable blanc , préservée du tourisme
Vous avez egalement un aeroport sur l ile et 3 vol par semaine de Makassar

Pour Sulawesi le mieux est d atterir a Jakarta et ensuite vol interne pour Makassar si vous voulez aller dans le sud ou Manado pour le nord ....
J'ai pris mon billet chez Emirates :
- aller Lyon-Dubai-Jakarta pour avoir une correspondance rapide pour Makassar
- retour par KL.
- acheté 470€ (il est a 500€ aujourd'hui tjs pour sept période creuse). J'ai pris 2 fois Air France pour KL au même prix qu'Emirates ... mais ils ont supprimé le Paris-KL
Pour Jakarta-Makassar, il y a 20 vols/jour je n'ai pas encore acheté et le retour pour KL avec Air Asia (45 a 55€ suivant la période d'achat)
Prix des voitures avec chauffeur : ce que je sais, c'est que c'est + cher qu'a Flores ou je suis allé en 2013 (et donc encore + qu'a Bali ou Java) 😊 .... on verra sur place.
La plupart des vols partent du même aéroport que l'international (Soekarno)
Air Asia et qqs autres partent d'un terminal a l'écart (3 il me semble), prévoir un peu de temps, mais il y a un bus gratuit jaune qui met 15 min environ
Attention Batik Air a des vols pour Makassar depuis les 2 aéroports 🤪 , ne pas se tromper car Jakarta Halim est a l'est de la ville( Soekarno a l'ouest) donc de 1 a 3h de bouchons a prévoir !
Combien prévoir pour changer ?
30mn de retard est courant, 30 a 60 min pour sortir (la derniere fois on est sorti en 20 min , mais ce n'est pas la norme) , éventuellement le chgt de terminal avec la navette + le temps de retirer de l'argent ... totale de 1h min a 2h
et comme suivant les compagnies, il faut enregistrer au + tard 1h avant donc ==> 3h n'est pas de trop
Avantage : il n'y a plus de visa a prendre a l'arrivée pour un voyage touristqiue de - de 30 jours depuis juillet 2015

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

I’m struggling to wrap up the end of my itinerary, even though it’s pretty straightforward (long but simple).
Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).

The ones I had in mind seem to be fully booked (unless it’s too early?). For those familiar with the area, is it easy to find accommodations on the spot in January/February? I’m specifically looking for hotels with a pool, beachfront, air conditioning, and easy scooter rental nearby. Thanks for your tips!

For those familiar with SOUTHEAST ASIA, I'm planning to leave in mid-June (with the trip ending at the latest in November), and I don’t have a precise idea of exact places or itineraries yet. The thing is, this period is usually the rainy season...
Any advice? I was thinking of Malaysia or Indonesia, like Sulawesi, for example (all countries and islands in Southeast Asia interest me except Bali).

My girlfriend and I booked our tickets with Saudia Airlines for a trip to Thailand this summer, from July 5th to August 3rd. Given the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, we’re keeping a close eye on the news.
I was wondering if anyone here is in the same situation as us?
• Have you heard anything about possible mass cancellations or if the airline is still maintaining its routes to Asia?
• Are there any travelers who’ve recently returned who could tell us if air corridors have been changed (longer flight times)?

Thanks for all your contributions on the forum—they’ve really helped me plan my trip. There are four of us friends heading to Sulawesi for 20 days. Based on all your advice, I’ve put together the following itinerary:
July 30: Makassar – sightseeing
July 31: Makassar – sightseeing + overnight bus to Rantepao
August 1–7: Tana Toraja with a guide
August 7: Tana Toraja to Tentena + visit Tentena
August 8: Early departure with a private driver to Ampana, then ferry to the Togian Islands
August 9–15: Togian Islands (2 different resorts)
August 15: Depart Togian Islands for Luwuk
August 16: Flight Luwuk to Makassar
August 17: Rammang Rammang
August 18: Stroll in Makassar, then return home
Overall, what do you think?
I also have a question about the connection between Tentena and the Togian Islands: Is it doable to leave early in the morning as planned and still be sure not to miss the ferry?

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...
