Hi everyone, We have a chance to stop in Hanoi on our way from Japan back to France. We arrive on Tuesday, May 12th around 2 PM and leave for France on Saturday, May 16th around 10 PM. I’d like to do a 2-day cruise in Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay, then either 2 days in Ninh Binh or 1 day. - 12/05: Hanoi - 13/05: cruise - 14/05: end of cruise and head to Tam Coc - 15/05: sightseeing - 16/05: early departure for Hanoi, day in Hanoi, then flight to France at 10 PM We don’t want to be overwhelmed by crowds of tourists and prefer to be on our own.

Do you have any tips for us—agencies, transport, sights, accommodation, or visits? Thanks so much for your feedback! Best regards, Isabelle

Hi, If you like running without taking in the sights, that’s fine. About your last point, if you want to be alone and avoid the "hordes of tourists," steer clear of tourist spots—otherwise, you’ll just be another member of those "hordes."

Hi there,

Four days is way too rushed for all that, and you won’t spend enough time in Hanoi—it’s a shame...

I think you can skip the cruise. The land-based Halong Bay is already enough.

After arriving in Hanoi, you could head straight to Tam Coc. Tam Coc for 2 days: boat ride (in the morning to avoid the crowds, at the Tam Coc pier), climb the 500 steps to Mua Cave, bike rides through the rice fields, temples...

Return to Hanoi on the evening of the 14th or the morning of the 15th. And the rest: Hanoi.

Hi there, Reading your message, you're focusing more on the bays than on the city of Hanoi. Of course, that’s quick, but in most agency tours, they follow the same pace. Cruises usually run from 12:00 PM to 10:30/11:00 AM the next day. So you can head to the pier on the morning of 05/13. There’s a highway, about a 2.5-hour drive from the city center. That leaves you the late afternoon and evening in Hanoi. On 05/14, after the cruise ends, you’ll head to Tam Coc (3.5-hour drive) for an afternoon bike ride and sightseeing. The next day, you can explore the terrestrial Halong Bay with different possible spots, like Hoa Lu, 10 km away—one of Vietnam’s ancient capitals. Then return to Hanoi (2-hour drive). So, either a second night in the city or a second night in the countryside, depending on your preferences. Enjoy your trip and happy exploring! Eric

I think it’s a bit rushed, even if it’s not impossible since some agencies offer it.

Example I found with a quick Google search: senteursduvietnam.com/...-4-days-and-3-nights/

You’ll likely have to go through an agency because the schedule is extremely tight.

Yes, it's a Vietnamese-style organized trip. The idea is to pack in as much as possible, but that leaves little time to really enjoy the visits. Personally, I’d keep Hanoi and Ninh Binh. There’s plenty to do and see, and you can actually enjoy what you’re looking at.

Hi, I know it’s last-minute, but this is an opportunity—we can make a quick stop in Vietnam on our way from Japan for the same airfare...

A big thank you for your reply—we’re definitely going with that option. Once again, this quick hop to Vietnam wasn’t predictable at all coming from Japan. I know it’s ambitious, but we’ll definitely have the chance to come back and stay much longer one day.

Any agencies or hotels you’d recommend in Hanoi and maybe Tam Coc?

thanks so much, I’ll check it out

Good evening Isabelle,

In September, I’m also heading to Japan for a few days in Tokyo, and on the way back, I’ll stop in Ha Noi—but for five and a half weeks, and only in the North. Yes, I’ve caught "the yellow fever," as some writers have called it since 1992 in this country. For this new trip, I’m once again using VietnamEvasion, an agency often mentioned on this forum. Be aware that many others are very good too, but since this is my 12th stay, I’m now looking for trips beyond the classic routes, which I find with this agency. Plus, they offer great flexibility, allowing the guide to adapt based on opportunities or unexpected events (weather or otherwise), with your approval. For hotels, in Ha Noi, I’m tempted by the Sofitel Legend Metropole. It’s not a luxurious hotel but a *Luxury* one—full of history, with colonial charm from the 1940s to today. Very well located. For Tam Coc, I haven’t been back since before COVID, so I don’t have an updated opinion. You’ll come back enchanted by this incredibly captivating country. Safe travels, Eric
