Question about gorilla permit agencies in Uganda

Hi there,

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the agencies you used to plan your trip to Uganda.

There’s the whole issue of gorilla permits, which need to be booked in advance and involve a significant financial commitment. That’s where I’m at with my trip planning. Between checking lutb.go.ug/ and reading online reviews, it’s hard to move forward with confidence.

I contacted the French Embassy, but they don’t provide any recommendations. I almost booked with an agency that had a really bad review from February specifically about the permit process.

How did you go about choosing your agency? Given the large sum involved, I’m this close to booking through a travel agency in France for this part.

From what I understand, no matter which agency books the permit, you’re ultimately guided by professionals trained for gorilla trekking based on the permit itself? I’m assuming that’s how it works.

Thanks for your feedback, and I’m really happy to see the forum’s new energy—it’s been super helpful to me in the past.

Hello David,

For the permits, I went through the agency I rented the 4x4 from (Roadtrip Africa). It’s a Netherlands-based agency. Everything went really smoothly (we took the trip in January this year and I’d secured the permits back in May 2025). We received all the permits when we picked up the vehicle they delivered to our hotel in Entebbe.

I had $4,000 worth of permits, so you can imagine I scrutinized every detail when buying them 😉

Have a wonderful day, Pascale

Thanks.

I’m in touch with Self Drive Uganda now.

Good reviews, properly licensed.

Thanks for your feedback.

A question.

After paying this agency, did they send you documents related to this gorilla permit?

Best regards,

Hello David,

We received the permits when we picked up the car upon arriving in Entebbe.

Here’s how it went:

I made a list of the permits I wanted (type, location, and number of permits) with a preferred date and a second date just in case The agency checked availability based on what I’d requested (since we booked well in advance, all my first-choice dates were available) I confirmed my request, after which I received a link to proceed with payment Once payment was made, the agency purchased the permits I got an email from them confirming the permit reservation and notifying me that I’d receive the documents when I arrived in Entebbe
