Air Austral soon worse than Air Madagascar?

April 5, 2017 The airline Air Austral announces the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Air Madagascar!

Darn it, I’d switched from Air M**ad** to Austral to avoid any more hassles (back in 2015: stuck for 4 days at Ivato, compensation offered was 150 € to use on the next flight—I threw their letter back in their faces and vowed never to fly with them again).

Today, it’s ruined—Air Madagascar’s problems are already rubbing off on Air Austral.

April 26, 2017 Air Austral’s plane leaves Roissy nearly an hour late, even though passengers had been boarded for ages. The captain announces: technical issues with the plane that would be resolved quickly.

April 27 We arrive in Réunion over an hour late, only to learn that the plane supposed to take us to Tamatave—coming from Mauritius—had technical issues mid-flight and is now under review. They promise to update us by 11 AM, which was the original departure time. 11:30 AM, still nothing—we go ask for news, and nothing! By noon, they decide to give us a "royal sandwich" for 3 € and a soft drink. A little later, they finally tell us the flight is canceled and rescheduled for 7 AM the next day. Off to the hotels—some of us won’t eat that evening because not all hotels have restaurants.

April 28 Up at 4 AM to catch the 5 AM bus back to the airport. The same ATR that broke down the day before takes off 20 minutes late for Tamatave—a ten-minute flight over the Indian Ocean before turning right back to Réunion due to *more* technical issues. Back in the airport, no one to greet us. The hall is packed, and we have no idea where to go, so we head upstairs to squat in a private, air-conditioned lounge with leather chairs. There are about twenty of us, so they can’t kick us out and immediately notify Air Austral that we’ve taken over a service provider’s space. We stay there for about 2 hours, but no one from Air Austral dares to come in and update us. We go back downstairs to demand to see a company manager. In private, some staff tell us about Air Austral’s recurring issues—later, we’ll learn that another flight to Mauritius was also postponed until the evening.

After an hour of back-and-forth, someone finally decides to talk to us—it’s already 11 AM. They inform us that a spare part is arriving from Paris tomorrow and promise a 1:20 PM departure. We all stand together and demand a new plane because we’ve lost all trust. They respond that all options have been considered, but unfortunately, the ATRs from Air Madagascar and Air Mauritius are also grounded—how reassuring! (FYI, large planes can’t land on Tamatave’s runway.)

The manager’s only goal is to break us up because as a group, we’re a force they can’t handle. Orders must have been given because 7 or 8 Air Austral staff circle us, handing out hotel vouchers. Unfortunately, everyone’s only thinking about themselves, and they manage to split us up. So, back to the hotels for another night in Saint-Denis.

9 PM: new message—the flight is now pushed to 3 PM, and it keeps going… To be continued tomorrow!

I find Air Austral’s management behavior absolutely unacceptable and shameful! They’re playing fast and loose with their passengers’ lives.

April 29th at 10 AM, an email drops at our hotel asking them to book an extra night without any further details. We weren’t even informed, and we still don’t know when we’ll be able to leave for Tamatave.

Does anyone have a solution to get back to Tamatave?

We can’t trust Air Austral anymore

Hi there,

Seems like you’ve had some bad luck.... I fly Air Austral often and I’ve never had any issues. Did you try routing through Antananarivo? It does add a day, I know, but it’s better than being stuck on Réunion....

Hi there 😉 Mixing brown with brown will never make pink! I was stunned when Air Austral "teamed up" with Air Mad. In my opinion, they must not have read Malagasy news for a very, very long time! 😉

Hi,

You’re entitled to a flat-rate compensation of 600 € per passenger. Check this out: http://retardimportantavion.unblog.fr But don’t take it upon yourself to buy a new ticket with another airline.

Regarding the 2015 flight, remember you have 5 years to claim your rights!

The airline must cover meals and refreshments "adequately." If they don’t, pay for them yourself (but don’t go overboard), keeping all receipts or restaurant bills. The airline will have to reimburse you. Same goes for hotel rooms and taxi rides to and from the airport—these are the airline’s responsibility.

Best regards,

Hi, Thanks for the tip, but once I get to Tana, I’ll still need to take a *taxi-brousse*, which I try to avoid as much as possible. That’s why I invested in a 4x4 after traveling all over Madagascar that way.

Hello, Yes, of course, we’ll go through the process, but it’s always long and stressful—especially since they outright ripped off 2 wheels and the removable handle of my suitcase, which now only has 2 barely functional ones left. I’ve filed a complaint and had the damage documented. I really seem to be having bad luck. But luckily, after 3 days in hotels, I had time to patch up the holes with a good roll of tape.

What I find disappointing is the flat-rate compensation of 600 €, when some people completely lose their vacation or full workdays. For 3 lost days, I think that’s a bit low.

Hi, Air Austral is back in the news—finally giving an update. The flight has been rescheduled to the 30th at 8:20 AM. It’s also changed its name: until now, it was called UU555, but now they’re calling it ZD555. What’s that all about?

Hi there,

Long and stressful procedures?

According to the templates provided here: http://retardimportantavion.unblog.fr, it involves sending one or even two registered letters with return receipt, then filling out a form to send to the Local Court Judge, and waiting for the airline to forward the file to their lawyer, who almost always gives in on behalf of the airline just before the hearing...

That’s it!

Best regards

Hi again,

It’s actually pretty simple. This means the original flight was officially canceled, so it’s no longer just a delayed flight.

So, you can claim your flat-rate compensation for the canceled flight. Don’t forget to also request, as a secondary option, the same compensation for a significant delay (arrival at your final destination 3+ hours late).

It might be a good idea to let the other passengers know about their rights… and share this link: http://retardimportantavion.unblog.fr

And remember, you can still claim the same flat-rate compensation for your 2015 flight since the statute of limitations (5 years in France) hasn’t expired yet! But you’ll need a separate registered letter for each case.

Thanks for the info—I’ll definitely pass all this along to the passengers.

It looks like the letters ZD are now assigned to EWA, the new Mahoran airline and a subsidiary of the Air Austral group, so it’s a new plane!

The big boss who didn’t have the guts or time to come see us—did they finally cave to our pressure? We’ll never know...

None of this matters given the definition of "actual air carrier" in European Parliament and Council Regulation 261/2004: "an air carrier that performs or intends to perform a flight......."

So your action should be directed against the airline that was supposed to transport you, even if they have you fly with another carrier.

April 30 Another 5 AM wake-up for nothing—we got to the airport only to find out the flight was pushed from 8:20 AM to 9:55 AM... fingers crossed!

Hi there,

Well, looks like you’ve beaten my record of 49 hours of delay arriving at my final destination for a Santo Domingo–Brussels flight!

Good evening, In 2015, we (14 adults) stayed 3 days in Roissy, which meant we missed our flight to St Marie and lost the 3 days we were supposed to spend there. We returned to France after our trip. After several registered letters, we all contacted our multi-risk insurers. They did the same as us without success, so they gave us the address of a lawyer. After 6 months of discussions between lawyers, we won our case, and the lawyer’s fees were reimbursed by our insurer. Good luck going forward, and don’t give up. Best regards, JP

Hi there,

Much simpler, more efficient, and faster: Follow the "how-to" guide here: http://retartdimportantavion.unblog.fr

In short: - A registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt (AR) using the provided template, then, if needed, a second registered letter with AR to demand PROOF of the "extraordinary circumstances" mentioned - And finally, a form for the local magistrate to fill out. In almost all cases, as long as you fit the criteria, the opposing lawyer will back down on behalf of the airline and contact you a few days before the scheduled hearing...

And that’s it!

Best regards

Hello, and I’d add that it works with AA—I tried it a few months ago... 🙂

Hello, it's indeed simpler for flight-related issues only. But when it comes to reimbursing hotels and miscellaneous expenses, it doesn’t work. Have a nice day. Best regards, JP

Hello,

It all depends on what you're talking about!

The flat-rate compensation (250 €, 400 €, or 600 € per passenger) in cases of denied boarding (not just overbooking), flight cancellation by the airline, or significant delay (3 hours or more upon arrival at the final destination) is indeed FLAT-RATE, and therefore is supposed to cover all expenses you had to incur due to the three aforementioned events, without needing to provide receipts. So, you can't claim them on top of that!

However, the airline is required, while you wait for your re-routed flight and beyond a certain time depending on the distance to be covered, to provide you with sufficient food and refreshments. If you have to spend an overnight waiting, they must also cover the hotel and taxi (or other means of transport, round trip). If that wasn't the case, you can get reimbursed for these expenses if you kept your receipts and invoices, following the same procedure—just as easily.

Hi everyone, Our EWA flight got us here safe and sound—end of the ordeal. Now we’ll have to file a claim. That said, we’ve got to admit Air Austral really did things right with the accommodation and taxis—nothing but 4- or 5-star hotels with excellent meals. Bravo!

After another misadventure with AA (which I recounted today), I realize I never shared the outcome of my complaint.

AA had offered me compensation of 200 € instead of the regulatory 600 €.

I turned to "Air...und" online, and after two years, they made Air Austral cough up 900 €! !
