Where to go in India in April/May?

Hi everyone,

This year, 2026, I can only get away in April and May. I never travel during these months usually, and from what I know, they aren’t the best for India. But in such a big country, there are always spots that are better than others weather-wise.

Which region would you recommend? Given that I’ve already traveled quite a bit in this country, and in any case, I’ll be discovering places I don’t know yet. No need for a major tourist hotspot or luxury comfort.

I was thinking of Meghalaya???

Up north?

Thanks for your ideas!

Hello! Meghalaya is likely to be very rainy—it’s one of the wettest places in the world. It’s best to visit in February or March. In April or May, head to Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand, two beautiful green regions and sites of many pilgrimages, like the source of the Ganges or Haridwar and Rishikesh. I also recommend Spiti, a remote Buddhist valley. You can get there from Manali (Himachal Pradesh) via the Rothang Pass. You could also visit the Darjeeling region and Sikkim.

Hi there,

It just so happens I’ll be in Rajasthan in April—right in the middle of the Thar Desert, no less. Not by choice, but for a wedding... which is bound to be scorching hot. I wouldn’t recommend it, though!

I was also going to suggest Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand, where the former colonial summer capitals were located for their milder temperatures.

Thanks for your reply. And Ladakh? Too early?

Thanks for your reply. Do you think it’d be too early for Ladakh in May?

And Ladakh? Too early?

You can visit Ladakh at any time of the year, even in the middle of winter if you don’t mind the cold. The climate is dry year-round, except in July and August some years when the monsoon crosses the Himalayan barrier. In April and May, temperatures are cool but very manageable, with a significant daily range (from 2°C to 16/17°C), but sunshine is guaranteed. I didn’t mention Ladakh because I’ve read many times that mass tourism is very present there. Personally, I’d lean more toward Zanskar and Spiti further south, which are probably less crowded. No guarantees though, as it’s been a while for me. In Spiti, you can go starting around April 15th, not before—the Rothang Pass (4,000m) is often still snow-covered. All I can say is that in Ladakh, you can fly there year-round, but for buses from Manali, you’ll need to wait at least until May 15th to cross the passes that are still snow-covered.
