Hi there, We’ve rented a 4x2 camper van in Iceland from June 8 to 28, 2025, and we’re planning to drive around the whole island. Do we really need the optional sand/gravel/tire insurance? Thanks in advance for your tips!!

Hi there,

If you're planning to stick to Route 1, which is paved and circles the island, insurance isn't mandatory—but you'll miss out on a lot of stunning spots. I’d recommend getting insurance that still lets you take the F-roads. If you're looking for some inspiration, you can check out our Iceland photos here (Photo Gallery - Travel).

Except: - Bellet 06 rents a 4x2 van, and F-roads are generally not allowed for non-4x4 vehicles. - Bellet 06 is planning to go to Iceland in June, when F-roads are usually still closed.

Yes, I understood that, but we’ve seen people who rented a 4x2 vehicle reach sites like Studlagil canyon, Landmannalaugar, Laki, etc. We even met some on the F910 road to Askja or the F249 to Porsmörk. 🚐

- Bellet 06 plans to go to Iceland in June, a time when F-roads are usually still closed.

The weather in Iceland can be unpredictable—sometimes in June, F-roads are open, while in summer, some can be closed due to snowfall. 🤔
