Hello, if the off-the-beaten-path enthusiasts are still around 😉, I’d love some info on tackling these trails. I’m not super familiar with the rules, risks, or what to expect—I’m looking for firsthand experience from folks who’ve done it on their own once or multiple times.

For the road leading to Reflection Canyon, allow 3 hours each way. The track is manageable in an SUV up to point 37.32226, -111.04512 (near the intersection leading to the Hamblin Arch hike). Beyond that, up to the trailhead located around 37.25207, -110.97352, a 4x4 seems essential. There are a few tricky sections. The hike is doable (25 km round trip). I recommend sleeping on-site. Don’t forget to pick up your mandatory permit at the Escalante visitor center. I had planned to sleep there and got hit with winds of 80/90 km/h. Impossible to pitch a tent. So I did the round trip in one day.

For White Pocket, the setup is very different. Lots of deep sand in places. A 4x4 is also a must. Some sections were tricky, especially on the way back where there’s a steep slope to climb right after the parking lot. No real hike, just exploring the site. The parking lot is right by the site.

In both cases, avoid during heavy rain. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Thanks for the feedback. So it’s doable.

Yes, of course. You should pack the essentials. White Pocket is a bit more accessible despite the sand. There are quite a few tour operators that go there, so if there’s an issue, you’ll have a better chance of running into someone.

Reflection Canyon is a whole different story. I was alone, so in both cases, plan for at least enough water and food to last two or three days in case of a problem (though normally, there won’t be one ;)) Make sure you have a car with a spare tire (a Jeep Wrangler is ideal). Deflate the tires a bit for the trail, and bring an electric pump! A flashlight (I even always carry a whistle, a foghorn , and pepper spray just in case—I once ran into a mountain lion near Kanab, so I’ve been cautious ever since). Basically, I have everything I need to sleep, eat, take care of myself, drink, etc.

While you’re at it, also check out Toroweap Overlook. Long trail, 4x4 mandatory for the last few kilometers, and a permit is required for camping (around $11) plus a pass. But it’s an incredible spot, far from mass tourism ;)

Basically, gear up like you’re heading into the mountains to make sure you don’t run out of anything on-site.

Just remember: rental vehicles aren’t insured off-road. So if there’s an issue (again, which won’t happen), figure out how to get the car back on a road before calling the agency. ;)

We’re all set—this is how we’re proceeding and gearing up, and I’ve rented a Wrangler, the 4-door model with insurance. Thanks for the recommendations! I’ll also check out Toroweap, thanks.

Hi there And is the car insured for off-road tracks?

Good evening, this is my 10th trip to the US, I know the rules.

yeah, I figured as much... I know them too and I know we're not insured on the trails😉

It’s been like this for at least 35 years (since my first trips), but everyone drives on the tracks.... Besides, most people take out travel and repatriation insurance without knowing they’re often not covered when they do so-called "extreme" sports. The line is pretty hard to define on that point too...

Yeah, I know. Actually, I know there are rental companies for 4x4s with real insurance for off-road tracks. That was exactly my question.

For 20 bucks a year, we get an extra 144,000 € in family coverage with the gold card. That’s 300,000 € plus 156,000 € from the second card. When we’re in Utah, Utah Search and Rescue for 30 bucks. Not bad for what it can offer.

Yeah, I’ve never worried about that kind of thing. When I travel, I go with Heymondo—they cover up to 1M for extreme sports included for 60 €. The extra cost compared to a 3- or 4-week road trip isn’t much in the end. And for the car, a lot of people seem concerned... Stress just isn’t my thing.

hi I use the Visa Premier card for insurance (Mondial Assistance) it really helped us out in California last September. Everything was covered—doctor visits, hospital, hotels, taxis, and repatriation. You can combine multiple cards to increase the coverage limits
