Hi there, We’re planning a trip in August 2025 with two kids (8 and 11 years old) in a camper van through the American West. Any tips for renting a van? (I’ve started looking, and it seems really expensive—August probably doesn’t help...) But it’ll still be cheaper and more nature-focused than motels... We’re considering this route: Salt Lake City - Great Salt Lake - Yellowstone - Grand Teton, then heading back down toward Lake Tahoe, Yosemite (Sequoia Park if we have time), and San Francisco. Do you think this is doable? Any suggestions for other sites to visit? Also, any recommendations for campgrounds in these areas? Thanks in advance!

Minivans, while super practical, usually aren’t a great idea because mileage isn’t unlimited. I saw a lot of Indie Campers on my last trip. I don’t know their mileage policy, but they seemed pretty good. That said, after chatting with a camper, he told me his van cost around $300 a night... so I’m wondering if it’s really worth it. Camping’s not bad either. Just buy a tent at the first Walmart and you can all sleep for the price of the campsite. Watch out! Yellowstone and Grand Teton in August—campsites are definitely already fully booked.

Just to confirm, Indie Camper has unlimited mileage, which is a big plus. And they have mini vans starting at $204 per night.

Hi there, Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately, Indie Camper doesn’t cover all cities, especially the ones where we’re landing. For bookings, I’ve already reserved the campsites—there was still space available. And for sights to see, do you have any additional ideas? Thanks!

Hi, I'm surprised because I typed "Indie camper Salt Lake City" into Google and it showed me some offers...

For more details, you’ll need to share your itinerary with us. Like Day 1 - SLC Day 2 Bonneville...

and a rough idea of what you’re planning to visit each day.

I’d also be curious to know which campgrounds you’ve booked. That interests me too ;)

At Bonneville, for example, I slept out in the wild at these coordinates: 40.77357997471644, -113.97972513369072
