Tips for a first cruise

Hi everyone! I’m used to sailing on a sailboat with two or three people—it’s amazing. But I’d love to try the experience of a cruise. Just to clarify, I’ll be going alone. My first question: are there other solo travelers on these cruises, or is it mostly couples and families?

For a first cruise, I’d prefer a short one (maximum 8 days). Do those exist? And on the smallest boat possible. I live in Marseille, so a departure from Marseille would work, but I’m open to other ports too. If you have a cruise line to recommend and a destination you’ve enjoyed, or if you’ve had a great experience on a more intimate-sized ship, I’d love to hear about it!

Thanks a million for your replies! Marie

Hi Marie, With COSTA/MSC cruise lines, there are usually meet-ups organized on board for solo travelers in the late afternoon. The ships range from 3,000 to 6,000 passengers, with couples, families, young people, and solos. The solo supplement is high. C-F-C, a ship with 1,100 passengers, also offers solo meet-ups and cruises departing from Marseille, some of which have no price supplement for solos but may be a bit more expensive upfront than MSC/COSTA. The ship is "older" but pleasant due to the French-speaking environment on board and interesting Mediterranean stops. Mostly "seniors" on board. Just check the cruise lines' websites and compare. C-F-C has promotions every Wednesday—just sign up for their newsletter. Hope I’ve answered your question. MUM49

Thanks so much, Mumm, for replying and giving me answers. I’ll look into all of that. I’m going to rule out the boats with Costa/MSC since there are between 3,000 and 6,000 people on board. I already know I won’t be comfortable on that kind of ship. I’ll check out the two other companies you mentioned, thanks. I also hope that if I find something that suits me, there’ll still be last-minute spots available for this summer, since I’m not the type to plan my vacation projects too far in advance, and I’d like to leave in July or August 2025. Have a good evening.

Hi there, I’m using this thread to ask a few questions since I’m planning to take a long cruise—it’ll be my first, as I’ve never been on one before.

During this cruise, my goal is to spend as little money as possible. How does it work with stops? Is the passenger free to explore the place alone? Generally speaking, across different operators.

Another question about food: Are passengers entitled to three meals a day? Are they all-you-can-eat buffets? Since I’m trying to save money, I won’t be getting a drink package—water is more than enough for me.

Hi Jonzun,

For layovers, you can arrange them yourself. There’s plenty of advice on this site depending on the ports. Just make sure to get back to the ship at least 45 minutes before departure—it won’t wait for you.

Meals: all-you-can-eat buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can have breakfast at the restaurant listed in the daily planner during specific hours. Lunch at the restaurant is the same. For dinner, you’ll be assigned a table and times, which will be noted on your cabin card. You can choose to eat at the restaurant or the buffet. Watch out for drinks (cold or hot) on board—there’s a 15% tax added to the price. At the breakfast buffet, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, fruit juice, and water are free. For lunch and dinner at the buffet, water from the dispensers is free. Most days, there’s an afternoon snack offered at the buffet between 4 and 5 PM.

There’s no cash on board—everything is paid with your cabin card. At embarkation, they’ll ask for a credit card imprint or you can deposit a cash amount at reception (usually 250 €), which will be loaded onto your cabin card. If you don’t spend it all, you’ll need to stop by reception or the "totems" the day before disembarkation to get your balance back. Don’t hesitate if you have any other questions. Have a great day! Hi Mum49, Thanks for such a detailed reply.

Planète-Croisière is offering me a one-passenger cruise on the Costa Favolosa for 21 days from Le Havre to Pointe-à-Pitre this autumn, for 1200 €. That’s a really attractive price for me, even though there’ll be 6 consecutive days at sea and my cabin will be inside—but for a first cruise, it sounds just fine.

What do you think? As for the site, I’ve read online that it seems reliable.

Hi there, Personally, I’d strongly advise against this agency. Did you read the terms and conditions carefully? They charge hefty cancellation fees if anything goes wrong. I’d recommend checking out LOGITRAVEL, CROISILAND, or MONACRUISE instead.

Hi Jonzun,

I completely agree with POUPOU about the agency you mentioned. Several users on this forum have had problems with them. No matter which one you choose, make sure to read the cancellation terms carefully—they’re on top of the cruise line’s own fees. Go with an agency based in FRANCE, since legislation outside France isn’t at all traveler-friendly for French folks. Have a great day! Mum49

Okay, thanks, I’m glad I asked. ;)

Otherwise, do you recommend getting travel insurance (or more than one policy)?

Hi Jonzun,

For insurance, it all depends on the level of your credit card that you’ll use to pay for the cruise. Check with your bank about their terms and reimbursement rates in case of cancellation, illness, flight delay, lost luggage, assistance, etc. Sometimes taking out insurance is redundant. If you pay by check or bank transfer, I think taking out insurance would be necessary. Other users on this site can add to my answer. Have a great evening! Mum49
JO Jonzun ·
Thanks! Since I’m paying by credit card, my bank’s insurance should be enough.

Another question: about the expiration date for cruise quotes from agencies—does the price go up if I don’t book through that first quote? In this case, it’s for Croisiland.

Hi Jonzun, Normally, Croisiland gives a deadline for the quote's validity (usually 48 hours). You can ask for an extra 24 hours if you need more time to think. You can also request a quote directly from the cruise line, as I think their quotes are valid for longer (5-7 days). Regarding your credit card insurance, the coverage depends on your card's level (basic, gold, premium, or higher). I know Croisiland offers an insurance policy that covers what your credit card doesn’t. Have a great evening! :) mum49

hi cruises are like the stock market—the price can swing at any moment. A reputable agency will always place a hold at the same time they give you the quote to lock in the price. Often the hold period is short, as mentioned earlier.

Hi, thanks to all of you.

Between a Costa Cruises cruise and an MSC Cruises cruise, do you have a preference? Because there’s also this other MSC cruise heading to Guadeloupe but departing from Marseille, same duration (and slightly cheaper).

COSTA is now on the LOW-COST track and charges for a lot of things on board, which isn’t as much the case with MSC, even though their services are similar. You can still get a fridge, pizza, ice cream at the restaurant, burgers, and fries at the buffet without having to pay with MSC, and as far as I know, they haven’t removed tablecloths either.

Okay, I think I'll book with MSC. By the way, is it better to book through an agency or can you do it just as well online? Especially in terms of price.

Hi there, You can request quotes online to compare. With MSC and LOGITRAVEL, you can run online simulations and see the price directly. It’s always cheaper going through an agency, but sometimes the cruise line will match the price.
