Je ne vais pas faire dans l'original mais j'ai besoin de l'avis de connaisseurs afin de valider l'itinéraire que je compte réaliser pour mon voyage en Birmanie en décembre 2011. Mes questions reposent surtout sur la faisabilité de cet itinéraire au niveau des transports et des temps prévus sur place (j'ai cru comprendre que les transports peuvent être très longs en Birmanie) !
Contexte :
Je pars avec un ami le 30 novembre à Singapour ou je reste 3 jours. Puis nous prenons le vol de 07h55 de Singapour pour atterrir à Yangon le 04 décembre à 09h20. Nous quittons la Birmanie le 23 décembre à 16h40 (ce qui nous fait 19 jours complets sur place plus le jour du départ). Entre temps nous récupérons un ami le 13 décembre (ce qui nous oblige à être ce jour là dans une étape avec un aéroport pas trop loin car notre ami ne faisant que 10 jours, il veut éviter d'avoir en plus une journée de transport en bus/train pour nous rejoindre).
Pour des raisons de timing essentiellement ainsi que de budgets (nous sommes 3 étudiants), nous avons décidé de ne pas prendre l'avion. Nous avons donc choisi de réaliser l'itinéraire "classique" afin de ne pas courir en permanence (Mrauk U, Kengtung, Ngapaly seront pour un autre voyage).
Itinéraire :
J1 : Arrivé à Yangon à 09h20 puis journée + nuit à Yangon
J2 : Journée et nuit à Yangon
J3 : Départ tôt le matin pour Bago, visite de Bago et nuit au Rocher d'Or
J4 : Montée au Rocher d'Or très tôt le matin, visite du site retour dans l'après midi à Yangon + Bus de nuit pour Mandalay.
J5 : Arrivée le matin à Mandalay puis journée et nuit à Mandalay
J6 : Visite de Amarapura + Saguing, nuit à Mandalay
J7 : Visite de Aiwa + Mingun, nuit à Mandalay
J8 : Journée à Mandalay (programme non défini) puis départ pour Monywa et nuit à Monywa (à moins qu'il soit possible de faire ce trajet dans un bus de nuit ?)
J9 : Rejoindre Bagan depuis Monywa en passant par Pakokku (je serai aussi intéressé par vos conseils pour optimiser ce trajet). Nuit à Bagan
J10 : Journée + nuit à Bagan (c'est d'ailleurs ce jour que nous récupérons notre ami)
J11 : Journée + nuit à Bagan
J12 : Journée + nuit à Bagan
J13 : Départ tôt de Bagan pour rejoindre Kalaw. Nuit à Kalaw
J14 : Excursion pour la journée à Pindaya et nuit à Kalaw
J15 : Départ du trek de 3 jours pour rejoindre le Lac Inle
J16 : Trek
J17 : Trek et arrivée au Lac Inle. Nuit à Inle
J18 : Journée et nuit au Lac Inle
J19 : Excursion à Kakku + Lac Inle et départ en bus/train de nuit pour Yangon.
J20 : Arrivée le matin à Yangon puis départ pour Paris dans l'après midi
Questions :
Je suis donc intéressé par différents aspects :
- le temps prévu pour chaque étape vous semble-t-il suffisant ?
- Certaines étapes "incontournables" situées sur notre itinéraire vous semblent-elles manquer ?
- Est-il plus intéressant de prévoir l'excursion pour Pindaya depuis Kalaw ou le Lac Inle (j'ai vu les deux possibilités sur ce forum) ?
- Le temps de transport nous laisse-t-il le temps de profiter des étapes (je pense notamment au J9, pourra-t-on s'arrêter quelques heures à Pakokku pour découvrir ?)
- Enfin quelles trajet pouvons nous effectuer en transport de nuit (à l'exception de Yangon/Mandalay et Lac Inle/Yangon) ?

en Mars dernier, j'ai fait le trajet Monywa-Pakkoku-Bagan. Voilà comment ça s'est passé : à mon arrivée à Monywa, sur les conseils de mon chauffeur de taxi, je suis allé réserver les billets de bus pour Pakkoku à la gare routière. Départ le matin vers 8 heures. Petit bus archi-bondé. Trois heures trente de route environ jusque Pakkoku.
Du terminus à l'embarcadère du fleuve pour Bagan, on a pris une des calèches qui attendent à l'arrivée des bus. Le trajet est assez long jusqu'au bateau.
Le bateau pour Bagan part en début d'après-midi (13 heures environ). On prend les billets à bord. La descente vers Bagan dure à peu près deux heures et ne présente pas particulièrement d'intérêt, mais ça change du bus et ça fait voir autre chose que la route... On voit quelques barges transportant des grumes de teck.
A l'arrivée à Nyaung Oo, se préparer à voir plusieurs gamins envahir en une fraction de seconde le bateau par les fenêtres à peine accosté et se précipiter sur les bagages des touristes (on était 4 dans le bateau...), s'en saisir et les apporter au pied d'une des calèches qui attendent le client. Vaut mieux le savoir à l'avance, ça surprend moins !
Le trajet Mandalay-Monywa est assez long (au moins 4 heures) mais l'arrêt à la Paya Thanbodday très colorée puis au Bouddha géant de Bodhi Tataung est nécessaire. Ce dernier est impressionnant, de près comme de loin.
Les grottes de Monywa ne m'ont pas emballé et honnêtement, je m'attendais à mieux. Sincèrement, de mon escapade à Monywa, j'ai préféré Thanbodday et le bouddha géant. Je préfère de loin les grottes de Pindaya, très différentes mais plus marquantes que celles de Monywa.
Juste une impression, ton programme me semble très chargé sachant que tu ne prends pas l'avion et que tu as en plus un trek de 3 jours entre Kalaw et Inle... J'ai passé 24 jours en Birmanie en faisant sensiblement les mêmes choses mais avec Mrauk U en plus, sans faire de trek à Inle, sans aller au Rocher d'Or et en faisant toutes les liaisons en avion. J'ai fini le voyage bien crevé et en me demandant si je n'aurai pas du supprimer une des étapes.
Tout d'abord je voulais te remercier pour ta réponse rapide. J'ai quelques petites questions concernant ton itinéraire :
1) Si je comprends bien tu es arrivé aux environs de 11h30 à Pakkoku et tu as repris le bateau pour Bagan à 13h00. As-tu pu profiter un peu de Pakkoku ou bien s'agissait-il uniquement d'une étape pour changer de moyen de transport ?
2) Pour le trajet Mandalay-Monywa, quel moyen de transport as-tu utilisé ? Car j'aurai voulu savoir si tu avais visité la Paya Thanbodday et le Bouddha géant de Bodhi Tataung une fois arrivé à Monywa ou bien si tu t'étais arrêté en cours d'étape pour les visiter ?
3) Enfin concernant mon programme que tu trouves trop chargé, penses-tu qu'il risque d'être trop fatigant (mais réalisable) ou bien que nous n'accordons pas assez de temps à certaines étapes ? Car s'il s'agit de la première hypothèse, l'itinéraire n'est absolument pas gravé dans le marbre et si nous ressentons effectivement de la fatigue, nous adapterons en cours de route notre itinéraire. En revanche si tu penses que nous passons trop vite sur certains sites, il faudra peut-être modifié notre initéraire.

pour répondre à tes questions :
- Je suis effectivement arrivé à Pakkoku en fin de matinée et nous avons immédiatement pris une calèche pour nous rendre à l'embarcadère. Nous n'aurions pas eu le temps de "visiter" la ville car il faut déja compter une bonne demie-heure pour rejoindre le bateau. Donc, ne compte pas trop passer un peu de temps dans Pakkoku même.
- J'ai fait le trajet Mandalay-Monywa en voiture avec le chauffeur que j'avais pris pour tout notre séjour à Mandalay. Nous nous sommes arrêtés au Bouddha géant et à Thanbodday en chemin, juste avant d'arriver à Monywa. Une fois à Monywa, nous avons déposé nos bagages à l'hôtel Monywa et nous avons été dans la foulée aux grottes. Visite de deux heures environ puis retour à Monywa en début de soirée. Journée bien remplie (un peu trop même...).
- Pour ton itinéraire, au vu de ma propre expérience, je pense qu'il est trop chargé, sachant en plus que tu ne prends pas l'avion mais le bus, ce qui va rajouter encore à la fatigue liée aux visites, à la chaleur, etc... Tu prévois aussi un trek de 3 jours entre Kalaw et Inle. A mon avis, tu pourrais le racourcir pour séjourner une ou deux nuits supplémentaires à Nyaungshwe ce qui ne sera pas de trop pour profiter du lac et des environs... Ou aussi passer une nuit à Pindaya.
Je vois que tu prévois à la fin du séjour d'arriver à Yangon en bus le matin et de prendre l'avion l'après-midi. Je te conseille d'y arriver la veille car on n'est jamais à l'abri d'un problème de transport ce qui te ferait louper ton avion. A toi de voir.
Voilà mon opinion. D'autres sauront peut-être mieux te conseiller.

1/ Un taxi Mandalay-Monywa te coûtera dans les 100 USD car la distance est importante. Compter environ 3 bonnes heures plus les arrêts à la Paya Thandodday et au Bouddha géant. Tu peux aussi négocier dans le prix le trajet pour aller de Monywa aux grottes.
2/ Je n'ai plus souvenir des horaires de bus Monywa-Pakkoku. Le seul qui m'intéressait étant celui du matin, je n'ai pas cherché à savoir s'il y en avait un autre dans la journée. Le bus du matin partait entre 7H30 et 8H00. Ces bus ont l'air toujours plein et mon chauffeur de taxi a eu la bonne idée de me faire réserver les billets la veille dès notre arrivée à Monywa.
Il n'y a apparemment qu'un seul départ de bateau pour aller de Pakkoku à Bagan, vers 13 H. Il met deux heures pour rallier Nyaung Oo.
3/ Je n'ai pas d'indication à te donner sur le prix du taxi Monywa-Pakkoku.
Au vu de ce que tu dis, si tu veux passer la matinée à Monywa, tu ne pourras être à Bagan le soir qu'en prenant un taxi Monywa-Nyaung Oo.
Pour avoir plus d'infos, tu peux essayer d'aller sur le forum "Myanmar" du Lonely Planet en anglais. J'y avais trouvé pas mal d'informations pour organiser mon voyage.
Je reviens vers toi pour une petite question. Tu as soulevé un point, important à mon avis, concernant mon retour en bus. Ayant de ton côté utilisé des vols intérieurs, penses-tu qu'il soit plus raisonnable de finalement rester dormir la nuit du 22 décembre à Nyaung Shwe et de prendre un vol Hého-Yangon le lendemain matin (mon vol Yangon-Singapour décollant à 16h40 et de plus je serai directement à l'aéroport donc je gagnerai du temps) ?
Si je choisis cette solution, as-tu une idée (même approximative) du prix d'un tel billet ainsi que de la meilleure manière de réserver ce billet (depuis la France, directement en Birmanie en passant par une agence, directement à l'aéroport de Yangon en arrivant...) ?

personnellement, je passerai la dernière nuit à Yangon, histoire d'être certain de ne pas louper l'avion pour le vol international. Cela dit, les vols HEHO-YANGON sont fréquents et ça ne devrait pas poser de problème en prenant un vol tôt le matin.
En Mars dernier, j'avais payé le vol HEHO-YANGON 90 USD. J'avais réservé tous les vols intérieurs par l'intermédiaire de l'agence White Lotus de Yangon (Mme WIN et son mari parlent bien le français). Cela n'a posé aucun problème et ils m'ont remis les billets à mon arrivée.
Tu peux aussi les prendre sur place à YANGON auprès d'une agence.

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...

I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).
I need some expert advice on these two destinations for a 15-day trip. We land in KL and plan to stay for 2 days before heading to Borneo and finishing with an island for snorkeling.
For those who’ve been, what are your must-sees?
We were thinking of spending the last 3 days on the Perhentian Islands, unless you’ve got another island to recommend near Borneo.

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before.
