Donc , cet été , nous serons deux amis à la découverte d'une partie de l'ALASKA , du 24/06 au 9/07 , c'est court , je sais , donc nous avons volontairement "réduit" notre ambition au "centre sud" si on peut dire ....
Au départ nous voulions seulement "marcher" mais la zone est déjà si vaste que nous avons choisi aussi de visiter plusieurs parties de l'ALASKA avec , si possible , des treks , de ci de là ....
Nous avons fait appel à un "organisateur" canadien qui nous fait du "sur mesure" , si l'on peut dire ..Nous espérons avoir réussi notre projet que je vous livre ici mais nous avons un souci sur DENALI NP pour lequel certains conseils seront bienvenus ...

Voilà notre trame , notre "conseil" devant nous indiquer le maximum de "treks" à choisir au long de notre itineraire .
Nos interrogations maintenant afin de PROFITER au maximum de DENALI NP :
le 30/06 : nous pensons faire de "courts treks " mais à partir d'où ?
SAVAGE RIVER ?
WILDERNESS ACCESS CENTER ?
ailleurs ?
le 1/07 : nous pensons prendre le 1er SHUTTLE BUS jusqu'à WONDER LAKE ...mais où doit on stopper pour faire un trek interessant (point de vue ? animaux ? ) en revenir , reprendre le bus jusqu'à un autre point ?
Ou bien est ce illusoire de penser cela et nous devrions aller au bout et faire "seulement" la boucle terminale pour REFLECTION POND ?
A quelle heure , au plus tard nous faut il quitter WONDER LAKE ?
Comme vous le voyez , c'est plutot "fouillis" , nous comptons sur vos conseils éclairés .............

Allez-vous camper ?
- Vous pouvez camper a Wonder Lake. Il faut reserver. Mon experience, toutefois, c'est que c'etait envahi de moustiques. Vous pouvez vous arreter n'importe ou sur la route en bus pour faire une marche de quelques heures. Sable Pass (Zone 6) ou le petit sommet de Thorofare au dessus d'Eielsen, par ex.
- OU BIEN vous pouvez faire du Backcountry Camping (camping sauvage dans la nature). A mon avis, mieux. Pas de reservation a l'avance, vous devez aller au bureau Backcountry a l'entree du parc quand vous arrivez.
Voici une première réaction brute à la lecture de votre trajet, compte tenu du peu de temps dont vous disposez.
Je supprimerai l'étape de SOLDOTNA (intérêt nul pour moi, mais je peux me tromper), et filerai donc directement (très longue étape) de Denali NP jusqu'à Homer.
En effet, je supprimerai aussi Denali State Park, quitte à me consacrer plus à Denali NP, et y randonner.
Par contre, entre Valdez et Glenallen, j'irai passer deux jours à McCarthy et surtout Kennicott (il y a un lodge), d'où de nombreuses randos magnifiques sont possibles, vers le Wrangell-St Elias NP, avec beaucoup de glaciers. Depuis McCarthy, des déposes en avion sont possibles.
Pour rejoindre Denali NP depuis Glenallen, vous avez choisi le 29/06 le Denali Hwy. Bof ! je trouve que c'est une piste pas très agréable, parfois pas bonne, et qui n'amène rien. Je préfèrerai rester sur la route goudronnée, où on roule vite, en passant par Fairbanks. Mais d'autres vous diront le contraire !
"le 25/06 : direction Whittier (couchage prés de PORTAGE )" :
C'est assez rapide, et il faut surtout éviter de dormir à Whittier (c'est sinistre).
Sur la route peu à faire (sinon à y consacrer pas mal de temps), excepté le glacier de Portage ; mais avec le réchauffement climatique celui-ci devient de moins en moins spectaculaire.
C'est encore à Ancorage que vous trouverez le plus facilement à dormir, et si je me souviens bien, on peut sans pb en partant tôt le matin attraper le ferry, s'il part bien toujours de Whittier en milieu de journée (à vérifier !!!!). Attention, pour rejoindre Whittier, tunnel à circulation alternée : il faut bien calculer son coup.
Ce n'est qu'une réaction à chaud. A vous de voir !

Nos hébergements sont bouclés ...pour SOLDOTNA , le but c'est de "marcher" dans ou autour des richesses de KENAI WILDLIFE RESERVE , de la KENAI...
Autour de PORTAGE , Potters Marsh et Moose Pass, le glacier à voir...
Nous ne dormons pas à WHITTIER , le ferry part à 13h45 et arrive à 19h30 à VALDEZ .
Nous avons déliberement laissé WRANGEL pour DENALI dans "tous les sens " en pariant sur des treks possibles dans le State Park....
Pour la route à partir de PAXSON , nous pourrions changer suivant la météo....

Je viens de prendre connaissance de votre demande...
Globalement : votre trajet tient la route.
Quelques remarques de détail :
Soldotna : comme Trois 14 je pense que vous pouvez supprimer.
Car pour "marcher" ce n'est pas forcément simple, le paysage est assez plat, vous pourrez trouver quelques "trails", conduisant à des lacs, mais les boucles sont plus difficiles à trouver pour juste quelques heures. Et puis vous marcherez longtemps dans la forêt sans beaucoup de "fenètres" de vision.
Par contre du côté de Copper (et non COOper)Landing, le "resurrection trail system vous offre de belles possibilités de randos. Notamment Russian lake trail (attention ours fréquents le long de la Russian river).
"Autour de Portage : Potter marsh... ce n'est pas près de Portage ! (Moose pass non plus d'ailleurs...) C'est à la sortie d'Anchorage vers Turnagain Arm... Un marais auprès de la Highway, peu d'intérêt en dehors des périodes de migration des oiseaux. A faire pour une petite balade sur les boardwalks, le matin très tôt (Elans, voire un ours...).
La Denali Highway est pour moi vraiment somptueuse. Pas la route elle-même bien sur, mais les paysages à couper le souffle tout du long (pour peu qu'il fasse beau), des observations de faune assez fréquentes, et des possibilités de randos infinies sur la toundra. J'y ai encore "flâné" plus d'une semaine l'été dernier...Par contre - puisque semble t'il vous ne campez pas - peu d'hébergements, très peu même...
Denali NP : comme dit par Willemspie, pour la journée pas la peine d'aller au delà de Eielsen, sauf si le temps est tellement dégagé que vous pensez pouvoir faire à coup sur à Wonder lake la photo du siècle du Mac Kinley avec au premier plan un couple d'élans dans le lac...

Court et trek, c'est un peu contradictoire. En dessous de la journée, parlons plutôt de balades, voire de randos...
A partir du WAC, bof bof...
A partir de Savage River, oui : Depuis le parking au pont vous avez une boucle qui longe la rivière sur une rive puis l'autre au retour. Très fréquenté... Ou un trail qui monte sur la crête depuis l'aire de repos avant le camping. Moins fréquenté, plus varié (un peu de dénivelé) et très belle vue. Possibilité d'observation d'élans, mouflons de Dall..etc...
Denali State Park : attention je le rappelle ici une nouvelle fois : rien à voir avec le Denali NP. Pas d'infrastructures, juste quelques trails balisés, qui peuvent s'avérer très intéressants, notamment au départ de Byers Lake.
Homer : bear viewing : "Emerald Air Service", petite structure familiale, avec un "beaver" présente de gros avantages par rapport à l'autre structure utilisant des "Sea Otter". Malheureusement son manager, Craig, est décédé tout récemment, et je ne sais pas quel avenir aura Emerald Air Service...
Voilà également quelques pistes. Potassez bien, la préparation c'est déjà le départ...

Pour SOLDOTNA , impossible de supprimer l'hébergement ...mais il s'agit de notre but en revenant de DENALI STATE PARK et de là vers RUSSIAN RIVER et ses trails ...
OK pour la direction de PORTAGE , en fait peut être ferons nous des à cotés (FLATTOP ou CROW CREEK ) bien avant PORTAGE selon météo .
DENALI NP , OK pour EIELSEN mais nous devons réserver le shuttle à l'avance ...la solution est elle de reserver WONDER LAKE puis selon météo , tant pis , descendre à EIELSEN ..

Je ne vous conseillerai pas Flattop sauf si vous aimez la foule. Joggeurs, chiens et parapentes... Flattop est la sortie
type du samedi ou de la soirée en été quand il fait beau. La grimpette à Flattop est raide, voire dangereuse compte tenu de la fréquentation. Il y a quelques années l'endroit était tranquille, on observait des élans à coup sur, mais depuis 3/4 ans c'est vraiment "crowdy", le parking de Glen Alps a été doublé et un logement pour un ranger a été construit...
Depuis Anchorage même, retenez plutôt le sentier qui monte à Wolverine peak (environ 1000m de dénivelé). Le trailhead est plus à l'ouest dans Anchorage. Ou encore allez à Rabbit lake...
Crow creek mine trail : c'est au départ d'Alyeska. Beau trail, dont l'intérêt est surtout de passer le col et redescendre sur Eagle river (deux jours). Vous pouvez monter au col et redescendre du même côté dans la journée.
Kesugi ridge, oui, je ne l'ai pas pratiquée mais des relations l'ont faite et ont beaucoup aimé.

Une autre ballade: a l'entree de Whittier sentier vers Portage Pass puis descent a Portage Lake, beaucoup plus tranquille que les bateaux qui arrivent au meme endroit. Facile.
Pour le reste, a mon avis, des jours supplementaires au Parc National sont mieux que le Denali State Park. Mais pour eviter de refaire des heures de bus chaque jour cela implique de camper a l'interieur du parc. Plusieurs jours = plus de chances de vues degagees.

Je n'ai non plus jamais tenté de payer avec des dollars canadiens à Anchorage. L'inverse oui, mais ce n'est pas votre question...
Mais je ne suis pas certain que retirer des espèces au DAB soit la meilleure solution au plan pécuniaire. Pourquoi ne vous munissez vous pas de dollars avant de partir ?
Et puis... prendre un taxi ? vous ne prenez pas votre voiture de loc à l'aéroport ?
Nous arrivons à l'aéroport international .nous devons prendre un taxi car GO NORTH , chez qui nous avons loué , n'est pas à l'aéroport même ...mais ils remboursent le taxi sur présentation du reçu ...

De retour au bercail aprés notre court voyage dans ce grand pays et pour une premiere approche .
Nous sommes restés dans un "rectangle" PAXSON -DENALI-KATMAI - VALDEZ , comme prévu initialement .
Par contre suite à ma "bêtise" du 2/07 , mon copain , blessé aux pieds , un seul "hike" effectué ensuite au lieu de toutes les suggestions de mon "KENAI TRAILS" de l'Alaska Natural History Association /2004 / acheté pour l'occasion !
Mes impressions générales :
Tout s'est bien passé (voiture/ hébergements/ nourriture/ accueil des résidents ).
Comme SYLESSONE (Merci pour votre superbe récit) , j'ai perdu face à MURPHY (4 jours potables pour 12 sous la pluie ou le brouillard ), j'ai perdu pour les Baleines dans le PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND et j'ai perdu surtout à DENALI NP mais j'ai touché le jackpot pour la journée à KATMAI ...
Que de touristes des 48 "Lowers" avec leurs immenses RV et Camping cars !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tout est démesurément "grand" (je vis dans les Pyrénées Orientales , c'est "petit"!) , les villes sont déroutantes , ému par NINILCHIK et son artisan , les animaux partout présents , on imagine dans la profondeur du WILDERNESS ce que cela peut donner , j'ai observé la "pêche" ou plutôt le "fishing" comme ils disent , ce n'est pas la même chose qu'ici !
La bonne surprise pour TOUS les restos testés le soir , que du bonheur , vraiment !
Le constat , fait ailleurs (NZ /AUSTRALIE ), les laissés pour compte de la "civilisation moderne" sont toujours les mêmes :les représentants des 1eres civilisations piétinés par le "progrés" : alcool et pauvreté pour les Inuit aperçus en ville ...

Big Texas Ranch Steak 😏.

We’ll adapt day by day based on our mental and physical state (we’re not exactly spring chickens).
Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

I had planned a trip to Colorado in 2021 but canceled due to COVID, so with time passing and my eldest’s high school graduation approaching fast, I figured it was now or never!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?
Are there any other must-see spots or things we shouldn’t miss?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!

We just finished 9 days in the American West and wanted to share our experience because we had an amazing time.
I know some of you might ask, why use an agency? Honestly, we didn’t really feel like doing all the driving and planning, especially since we didn’t know the area at all. And since our English isn’t great, having French-speaking guides was a big comfort.
We found Emmanuelle and Isabelle, and wow, they were fantastic. It was just the two of us with them, so it was a truly VIP, ultra-personalized experience. They treated us like royalty from start to finish. These two live in Las Vegas and know the region like the back of their hand. The service was really personalized. They adapted to our pace and preferences, and we could stop whenever we wanted to take photos. It’s the luxury of being in a small private group—you’re not just a number on a big bus.
In short, we really felt like we were traveling with friends rather than professional guides. Everything’s included in the price (hotel pickup, meals, park entries, etc.), so the value for money is fair.
We loved it so much that we’re already planning to come back next year to explore other areas with them. I think we’ve caught the American West bug—it’s all we can think about, and we can’t wait to return.
