j'ai passé beaucoup de temps à parcourir les discussions sur ce forum, cela m'a énormément aidé à commencer la préparation de notre futur voyage (été 2009).
Nous serons trois (mon mari, ma fille qui aura 8 ans, et moi). J'ai tenté de tenir compte du fait que nous voyagerons avec un enfant, en prévoyant le moins de voiture possible entre chaque étape (du moins au début...)
Voici une première ébauche de circuit :

Jour 16 : excursion au Grand Canyon depuis Las Vegas (via un tour operator, ça nous changera de la voiture).
J'hésite, au vu des prix, à prendre un forfait avec hélicoptère, même si ça me tente énormément... De plus, acceptent-ils les enfants?
Ensuite ce n'est pas très bien défini, à priori retour sur Los Angeles (avec peut-être une étape s'il y a quelque chose d'intéressant à faire sur le trajet?).
Tous vos avis, critiques, conseils et commentaires sur ce circuit sont les bienvenus.
Nous avons passé 3 semaines dans l'Ouest l'été dernier et vraiment quel beau voyage, les paysages sont sublimes...!!!!!!!!!!!
Alcatraz vaut vraiment la peine d'être visité, avec l'audio guide, c'est génial.
Nous avons passé 2 jours au Lac Tahoe : superbe, notre hôtel ( et il y a du choix ! ) était à South Lac Tahoe : super et très agréable. Il faut absolument aller à Virginia City, c'est extra ( compter une matinée ) vous ne le regretterez pas.
Je trouve juste très très dommage que vous n'alliez pas à Bryce Canyon, cela a été notre coup de coeur !!!!!
A vrai dire au départ je n'avais pas non plus inclus le Grand Canyon, pour raccourcir les trajets. Mais après en avoir discuté avec mon mari, j'ai fini par l'ajouter au circuit car pour lui c'était le "must do", avec Las Vegas.
Quant à moi, mes "must do" sont San Francisco et la côte entre LA et SF.
J'ai peur que Bryce Canyon nous fasse faire un gros détour et beaucoup de route.
Par où êtes-vous passé ? Quelles ont été les choses ou paysages qui ont fait de cette étape votre coup de coeur? Avez-vous fait également Grand Canyon et préféré Bryce Canyon ?

De combien de temps allez vous disposer ? Je serais assez du même avis que mes prédécesseurs : aller dans ce coin en zappant Bryce Canyon... ET Monument Valley .... ça me parait sur qu'au retour vous le regretterez !!
Deux remarques :
J 11 : entre SFO et Lake Tahoe il y a un arrêt assez recommandable à Sacramento : votre fille va aimer la "vieille" ville, et ton mari, qui sait le musée des trains ?
J13 si tu veux raccourcir J14... tu pourrais après la visite de Yosemite aller faire dodo à Mammoth Lakes, ça te rapprocherait !
J16 : attention à cette excursion à la journée : sauf nouveauté, les "packages " hélico de Papillon sont à destination de Grand Canyon OUEST (avec dépose et pic-nic au bord du Colorado) Ce coin est bcp moins spectaculaire que GC South Rim où vont 95% des voyageurs ! Pour aller à South Rim, il n'y a - à ma connaissance- que des petits avions de Grand Canyon Airlines assorti d'une balade en autocar tout le long des viewpoints.
Si par hasard... tu disposes de qq jours de plus, alors fais le tour en voiture (LV, GC, Monument Valley, Bryce et retour Vegas/Paris en gagnant ainsi le parcours LV-LA !
Tu as le temps d'y songer !!
Si vous ne réussissez jamais rien du premier coup, n'essayez pas le parachutisme !
Tout dépend de combien de temps dispose tu réellement ? Ton circuit me parait pas mal quand aux distances qui restent "lights" mise a part la fameuse grosse journée de voiture vers DV 😉 .... As tu la possibilite de rajouter quelques jours ? C est vrai que si tu tiens a faire la cote et que tu ne peux pas rajouter de jours ça sera tres difficile de voir + ...
Pour le Jour 9 à SFO, tu parles de faire la traversée en vélo du pont vers Sausalito pour revenir en ferry, cela fait quand meme 13 kms à vélo ( des "Piers" à Sausalito) est-ce que que ta fille pourras faire 13kms à vélo ( à moins qu il y ait un systeme de petite carriole ? )sinon je sais qu' ils louent des especes de "sidecars" motorisés qui peuvent changer un peu de la voiture : http://www.gocartours.com/ ca peut etre rigolo aussi !😉
Je suis de l avis de Jadorry pour la fin de Yosemite essaye déja de "grignoter" un peu de parcours en dormant a Mammoth Lakes c est une station de ski tres sympa .
C est ce que nous avons fait en septembre dernier : commencé à faire certains point de vues + dodo a Yosemite dans le parc + journée visite en le traversant et en ressortant par la Tioga pour finir la route et dormir a Mammoth et faire le lendemain le trajet jusque DV pour dormir à Las Vegas quant a nous ( pas a DV) . La route est belle cependant pour traverser DV, les distances se font tres vite car le paysage est superbe ..tout dépend si ton enfant supporte les longs trajets en voiture ...
Quant a Death Valley, on a pas " craqué" dessus car c' est très desertique et caillouteux au niveau paysage mais ça plait beaucoup a certains ! Alors tout depend de tes gouts 😛! Et penses aussi qu en juillet /aout il peut faire 45 C° facilement en journée a DV ( bref on prend une photo et on retourne vite fait profiter de la clim de la voiture !!) !!!! Je veux surtout pas déconseiller DV mais il y a tellement d autres parcs qui pourraient interesser un enfant avec un peu de chance pour y appercevoir pas mal d animaux sauvages ( je pense a Bryce ou au Grand Canyon...)
Il y a effectivement des incontournables qui vont surement gravement manquer a l appel : Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon et Grand Canyon. Essaye au moins de voir le GC, on peut se contenter de faire quelques points de vues meme à pieds... apres pour l helico c est vrai que cela a un certain cout ...si t as la possibilite d y passer une journée entiere plutot qu un tour en helico au depart le LV ça vaut carrement le coup de se ballader un peu le long de la "faille"...
C'est vrai que ce serait dommage de rater la partie UTAH (ARCH, ZION, BRYCE, voire la 12 jusqu'à Torrey et redescendre sur lac Powell et Monument Valley mais là on s'éloigne et il vous faudrait 5 semaines😛) mais déjà, pour un premier séjour, avec une petite fille, c'est suffisant...
Par contre, je conseillerai de repartir de Vegas (pourquoi revenir à L.A ?) et éviter ainsi une boucle inutile.
Quant à la Death Valley, j'y suis retourné pour la seconde fois cette année (partie Nord cette fois, Scotty's Castle) et ce fut un nouvel émerveillement ....en résumé, tout est à faire:Zabriskie peut-être en priorité, palette, badwater, furnace, sand dunes, les paysages lunaires autour de scotty' s castle...deux jours minimum et une bonne gourde mini 40 L 😉
Bonne idée Tahoe Lake ( Emerald Bay très jolie, fait en bateau, en bon Français j'avais amené les sandwichs à bord, verboten! 😎) YOSEMITE bien aussi pour ses lacs et animaux ...
Sinon, à côté de Vegas(si vous avez le temps, Valley of Fire un state park très sympa à sillonner), et de Vegas, vous pouvez survoler le Grand Canyon (gain de temps, de fatigue, mais pas d'argent😛)
Votre circuit semble correct, neanmoins l'organisation des journees 4-5-et 6 ne semble pas tres logique.
Bien que les distances ne soit pas enorme, je vous proposerait
J-4 : route cotiere vers le Nord / Big Sur / Carmel + visite - nuit a Carmel
J-5 : point Lobos / kayak/ 17 miles en direction de Monterey pour la nuit
J-6 : Monterey + aquarium + plage et direction vers SF
Cela a fait parti de notre voyage cet ete dans l'ouest, pour info, par exemple nous avons mis 2h30 pour faire la cote entre Monterey et Carmel, via les 17 miles, avec un arret au Pebble Beach Golf. Les points de vues sont nombreux avec de tres nombreux lions de mer un peu partout, votre fille va adore ! Ca peu paraitre un peu long, mais je me suis arrete partout, je suis fan de photos ......
pour le reste du circuit, vous pouvez zapper la death Valley, sauf si vous etes fan, au profit des canyons et pourquoi pas organiser votre voyage dans ce sens :
arrive par Las Vegas -les Canyons -Yosemite-San Francisco - direction le Sud pour finir votre sejour par LA ?
Nous avons également fait Grand Canyon : stupéfiant, au delà des mots pour le décrire. C'est juste que Bryce a vraiment été notre coup coeur peut être parce que l'on sait que Grand Canyon est un incontournable et que pour Bryce on ne s'attend pas à tant de beauté .....C'est un incontournable aussi !
Nous avons fait Bodie aussi : très sympa et impressionnant, et il est vrai que Sacramento nous a bien plu ( en particulier le vieux quartier ).
Nous avons préféré Los Angeles à San Francisco, mais je sais que sur ce sujet nous sommes en minorité !! Peut être parce que le temps n'était pas super .....
Le Yosémite est superbe mais mérite plus que la journée que nous y avons passé.....
de mon côté, je ne vous dirais pas "dommage que vous ne puissiez pas aller à !" ou "mais pourquoi sauter tel endroit ?".
De toute manière, vous ne pourrez pas tout voir et même si vous le complétiez pour aller plus à l'est, il y aura ensuite la bataille de ceux qui diront qu'il faut allez à Bryce Canyon, d'autres à Arch, d'autres à M.V., d'autres au lac Powell...
Votre trajet me semble super détaillé (ça change de ce qu'on peut parfois voir sur le site) 🙂 et on voit que vous avez pensé aux pbs de distance et de temps dans la voiture.
Mais "...Jour 13 : visite de Yosemite Park...". Vous savez que c'est "un peu plus" grand que les studios Universal ? 😛
Je pense qu'il faut vraiment que vous décidiez de ce que vous voulez y voir pour planifier cette partie de manière plus précise. Une petite rando me semble indiquée (c'est magnifique). Jour 14 : A mon avis, il faut absolument que vous coupiez cette journée en deux. D'abord parce que c'est très long. Mais en plus parce que sur le trajet Yosemite-> DV, les paysages sont très beaux.
Je sais que certains vous conseillent de vous arrêter à Mammoth Lakes. Je privilégie plutôt Lone Pine avec des vues superbes sur la Sierra Nevada d'un côté et sur la DV de l'autre.
Pour la fin, s'il vous reste du temps et que vous voulez revenir en voiture sur LA (et pas repartir de LV en avion), alors je vous conseillerai d'aller au GC en voiture (en admirant le Hoover Dam en passant) et de revenir par l'Arizona.
En faisant cela, vous n'aurez alors qu'un "petit détour" à faire pour visiter Monument Valley...qu'il serait dommage de manquer (Ah zut, j'avais juré de ne pas écrire ce type de phrase 😇😊🙂)

J'ai bien retenu l'excursion à Virginia City pour la matinée du jour 12, ça me tentait déjà, et loveday, tu m'as tout à fait convaincue.
Je vais suivre tes conseils, enkakrl, et revoir les jours 4-5-6 comme tu le suggères, c'est vrai que c'est plus logique.
Ta suggestion de faire le circuit dans l'autre sens a aiguisé ma curiosité. Y a-t'il une raison particulière à choisir un sens plutôt qu'un autre?
De plus, étant donnée la magnifique unanimité des avis concernant Monument Valley et Bryce, je vais étudier l'ajout du circuit LV, GC, Monument Valley, Bryce et retour Vegas, en envisageant un retour en France depuis Las Vegas.

Il est vrai que j'ai plus travaillé la première moitié du circuit que cette partie, qui reste encore un peu floue pour moi. Une randonnée à Yosemite Park, c'est une bonne idée, avec un tout petit bémol: ma fille, qui aime beaucoup faire du vélo (d'où la journée vélo à SF), devient un peu flemmarde quand il s'agit de marcher "pour marcher". Il va falloir que je trouve une randonnée à sa portée, pas trop longue et avec des points de vue motivants pour elle. Ca doit pouvoir se faire, je pense.
Je vais peaufiner ce projet un peu plus, surtout la deuxième partie, et revenir vers vous lorsque je serai à peu près contente du résultat.
je rentre juste de san francisco, où j'y ai passé une petite semaine.. et pense dejà à repartir pour faire un circuit avec nos ados cet été !! (d'où ma présence encore sur ce fameux forum !)
pour tes journées à SF, voici mes conseils :
alcatraz avec les audio guides, top ! tu dois reserver tes places car c'est bondé, surtout l'été. nous avions le bateau à 10h et à 12h30 nous etions revenus. ton petit tour ensuite au pier 39 ne va pas te prendre toute l'après midi mais tout au plus deux heures avec le déjeuner, tu peux sans aucun problème repartir dans d'autres quartiers.
prends surtout le pass pour les transport en commun (cable car, bus, tramway, metro) 24 dollars les 7 jours, je ne sais plus pour trois, mais c'est vraiment très interessant, un trajet cable car seul est vendu 5 dollars !!!
pour changer et varier une fin de journée, nous sommes montés boire un verre au 52étage de la bank of america (financial district) vue sublime, et pris corrects. nous l'avons fait au bout de quelques jours, ce qui nous permettait de "comprendre" la vue et de nous repérer facilement. tu ne peux le faire que les jours de semaine quand les bureaux sont ouverts.
pour le vélo nous l'avons fait !! mais le brouillard (le fameux) s'est invité, et incroyable (et très frustrant) à 20m du golden gate nous le voyions absolument pas !!!! donc on s'est fait un bon tour direction le pacifique, puis le golden gate park. mais attention aux gambettes de ta fille : SF ça monte et ça descend, c'est donc assez sportif ! lorsque tu loue ton vélo, tu as une carte qui te permet de voir un peu ce que tu peux faire, mais ne serait ce que l'accès au pont est déjà super fatigant coté grimpette !
sinon, sausalito est une ville mignonne avec ses boats houses. on a loué une voiture pour y aller, ainsi qu'à muir woods (sequoias géants) et une belle ballade jusqu'à napa valley..

I know you can’t see into the future any better than I can, so I’m obviously not asking what the wildfire situation will be like in a month...
But if any of you could let me know if, CURRENTLY, there are major difficulties—not just for locals, of course, but for tourists as well?

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:
- Mormon Rocks
- Desert Discovery Center and visit the Old Woman meteorite
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

My 16-year-old son is flying to Grand Rapids with other kids his age. There’s a layover in Detroit. There’s no unaccompanied minor service available. Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

**Parking:**
We’d like to walk to Eagle Falls and then Eagle Lake. I’ve spotted two parking lots that seem close to each other and give access to the trailhead. Where and how do we pay for entry to Emerald Bay State Park and Inspiration Point?
**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’ve read there are trails to access the trailheads for Cinder Cone (11 km) and Warner Valley. Are these easy trails for an SUV?
Are there any other must-see spots or things we shouldn’t miss?

I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

Travelers to the United States | Photo Now Mandatory Upon Entry and Exit | La Presse
I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
