Nous sommes deux et nous envisageons de partir deux semaines en Islande en Juin 2009. Comme nous avons un 4x4, on pense aller là bas en bateau : en comparant rapidement les prix de location de 4x4, on se rend très vite compte que bien que beaucoup plus long, c'est plus beaucoup plus économique. En plus, ca nous permettrait de découvrir également les îles Feroe !
Cependant, la question budget se pose quand même. Je sais que la question n'est pas évidente, mais à combien estimez vous le prix de deux semaines en Islande, hors transport, sachant qu'on pense dormir en tente ou dans la voiture et qu'on pense prendre un réchaud et de quoi cuisiner ? Il nous resterait donc que le cout des courses alimentaires, de certaines nuits en camping et bien sûr de l'essence. Je sais que la vie est chere en Islande, mais pensez vous qu'on puisse s'en tirer pour moins de 1000 euros?
De plus, nous pensons aller en Islande fin mai-début juin afin de bénéficier du ferry moins cher. Les routes sont elles alors ouvertes dans le centre du pays ? La neige bloque t-elle encore l'accès à des sites majeurs ?
Une autre question sur l'escale du ferry aux îles Feroe. Il semble que si on y s'y rend hors saison comme nous envisageons de le faire, on n'y fait une escale que de un jour avec arrivée vers 06h00 et départ vers 17h00. Est ce qu'on peut débarquer la voiture ou est-on cantonner au port ?
Et le prix du ferry ne semble comprendre que le transport et les couchettes. L'alimentation est elle chère à bord?

1000 euros pour 15 jours, tout dépend ce que vous faites mais sans trop d'extra vous y arriverez. Vous pouvez faire du camping sauvage partout (sauf dans les parcs nationaux mais il suffit de sortir du parc c'est généralement pas tres long).
Le prix du ferry ne comprend effectivement que le transport et les couchettes. Tu peux quand meme prendre de quoi manger sans acheter sur le bateau.

Pour ce qui est de partir avec son propre 4x4 pour 15 jours sur place, il faut calculer .
Entre d'un côté le prix du carburant pour aller jusqu'au ferry et retour, le prix du ferry et d'un autre côté le prix de 2 billets d'avion et la location d'un 4x4, il n'est pas sûr que la différence soit énorme .
Au delà de 15 jours sur place la question ne se pose pas .
Pour la nourriture :
Normalement il est interdit d'emporter plus de 1kg de nourriture lyophylisée mais à la sotie du bateau les douanes en controlent un de temps en temps !
Sur le ferry il est possible d'avoir sa propre nourriture .
Les dortoirs ont 6 lits . Ceux du haut n'ont pas beaucoup de place entre le sommier et le plafond . A part ça, c'est correct .

Pour ce qui est de la location du 4x4, on a un peu regardé les prix et ils nous ont semblé exorbitants ! Mais c'est effectivement à calculer vu les prix et le temps que prend le ferry... Surtout si on doit décaler notre projet à juillet-aout pour pouvoir accéder au centre de l'île.
On envisage également de partir après le 15 juin (les routes seront plus probablement ouvertes, non?) en prenant le ferry depuis l'Ecosse (moins cher et moins de temps à passer sur le bateau). En se renseignant, on a vu qu'il existait un ferry entre Zeebrugge et Rosyth (situé pas loin d'Edimbourg). Cependant, on ne trouve pas de site officiel à ce sujet et on a donc aucune idée du prix d'une telle traversée. Quelqu'un aurait il ce renseignement?

Nous préparons un voyage en Islande pour Juin 2009. 4 personnes en Toyota HDJ 80 perso.
Après avoir contacté Gallia, représentant de Smyril Line à Paris, je confirme que les liaisons par l'Ecosse ou la Norvège sont supprimées cet été. Seul départ possible par Hansthlom au Danemark, avec escale 2 nuits aux Iles Féroe et retour direct de Seyðisfjörður vers Hansthlom.
Les prix sont effectivement assez élevés (2 fois 827€ pour un 4x4 et 4personnes, + supplément cabine éventuellement).

En Aout 2007, le voyage au départ de la Bretagne -> Islande -> Bretagne, nous avait couté 1100€ par personne pour un équipage de 2 personnes par 4X4, tout compris, pour 2 semaines sur place (soit environ 3 semaines de voyage):
Autoroute (en france uniquement! après c'est gratis... bizard)
Carburant gasoil
Bateau aller/retour (en passant par le danemark)
Bouffe (que nous avions apporté depuis la france, autonomie complete)
Quelques (5 ou 6 nuits) campings/chambres d'hotes en Islande... le reste en bivouac.
Pas un seul resto. Achat sur place de quelques denrées alimentaires mais pas grand chose.
Bref compter 2200Euros par voiture avec 2 personnes. Contrairement aux départs vers l'afrique, pour aller en islande ils sont assez strictes sur la hauteur des véhicules... j'ai été obligé de dégonfler mes pneus car mon 4x4 faisait 1cm de trop!
Une grande tente-abri pour faire a manger au bivouac le soir ne sera pas de trop pour couper au moins le vent. Nous, nous avions meme apporté un chauffage à gaz qui a été très utile... au mois d'aout.
Un superbe voyage.
On peut toujours remettre le départ à demain... ou partir tout de suite.
Plus d'actualité dans ce poste puisque le départ d'Ecosse est supprimé, mais intéressant à savoir: Norfolkline reprend la liaison Zeebrugge-Rosyth 18/09/2008 La société de ferry Norfolkline va reprendre à son compte la ligne Zeebrugge-Rosyth que vient d'arrêter cette semaine Superfast, écrivent jeudi les journaux flamands De Tijd, De Standaard, Het Nieuwsblad et De Morgen. Norfolkline exploitera cette ligne à partir d'avril prochain.
Superfast avait annoncé en mai dernier qu'il allait abandonner cette semaine la liaison Zeebrugge-Rosyth en raison de l'augmentation des prix des carburants et des cours fluctuants de la livre. Cette suppression était surtout préjudiciable pour Rosyth (près d'Edimbourg) car elle ne disposait pas d'autre ligne en ferry vers le continent.

After that, we’re planning to visit Gorongosa National Park before flying back to France from Beira. We’re planning a 4x4 trip from Belgium to Central Asia, passing through Georgia, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
For these countries, our national insurance obviously doesn’t cover the vehicle, so we’ll need to get local insurance.
Will it be a problem if the vehicle is registered under person A and the national insurance is under person B? Both A and B will be in the vehicle, and both will be listed as drivers on the insurance.
When we get the local insurance, if we again list A and B as drivers, does the order matter? Could we get stuck at the border for this reason?

Were they All Terrain tires or more "standard" ones like all-season tires, for example?

I’m planning a trip to Iceland for next July-August, with a car and tent, and I’m wondering about booking campsites.
From your experience, is it necessary or even essential to book campsites in advance, or do you always manage to find a spot to pitch your tent?
We’ll also have the option to sleep in the car without pitching the tent.
Does that give us the flexibility to stay outside a campsite for a night here and there?

Last year, we had a fantastic road trip in the Anti-Atlas and High Atlas using Erfahren maps, but unfortunately, they don’t cover the area we’re interested in this year.

We’re planning a 13-day family road trip in Morocco this July, with six people in a Toyota Prado 4x4 (renting in Marrakech).
We’ll alternate between bivouacking and small hotels/riads depending on the stops.

Our goal:
Atlas Mountains + desert + dunes + plateaus + valleys + a bit of coastline.
We’ll cover about 1,700 km in total.
We’re planning:
Bivouacking in the Chegaga/Iriki area
Flexible for the rest (booking the day before or same day)
Sand gear: traction plates, compressor, tow strap, roof rack
Questions:
Is the Zagora → Chegaga → Iriki → Foum Zguid crossing in July doable on our own (single vehicle, no guide)?
Are there any truly technical or risky sections between Chegaga and Iriki?
Does the overall itinerary seem manageable in 13 days without rushing?
Any suggestions for great bivouac spots or particularly interesting stops along this route?
The points on the route are provisional overnight stops. Some spots will include two nights in the same area.
We’re used to off-road driving, but not yet in the Moroccan desert.

We’re struggling a bit with timing and choosing activities for the part of the trip between Sesriem and Brandberg.
Day 1: Sesriem to Mirabib
Day 2: Mirabib to Swakopmund – visit Swakopmund, overnight in Swakopmund
Day 3: Sandwich Harbour – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 4: Kayaking with the seals + the living dunes – overnight in Swakopmund
Day 5: Moon Landscape, Henties Bay + Cape Cross – overnight at White Lady Lodge in Brandberg
Does this itinerary seem realistic to you? Is Cape Cross really worth the trip? If I had to choose between Cape Cross and kayaking with the seals, which would you recommend?

However, the rental agencies we’ve found prohibit driving on the tracks to Omalo (Tusheti) and/or Ushguli (Svaneti).
Do you know of any agencies in Tbilisi (local and reliable) that allow rented 4x4s to drive on these tracks? If so, which ones?

I’d love to visit Gonarezhou National Park—I see there are two sectors: the Mwenezi Region in the south and the area around the Runde River in the north. Should I cover both sectors or just focus on the northern region?
For the parks along the Zambezi River, is it better to visit Mana Pools on the Zimbabwe side or Lower Zambezi on the Zambia side?

I’m leaving in November for about a month with the goal of reaching Senegal via Mauritania. I’d love to share this trip with someone who wants to discover Mauritania and a bit of Senegal... and also experience life on board a 4x4 in the desert or bush, sometimes sleeping in the vehicle or in hostels/small hotels for comfort. I’m looking for a rental company (or several) that offers single-cab 4x4 pick-ups with a fitted camper cell for two people. I’m specifically after a vehicle with an indoor shower for extra comfort ;)

While browsing the forum, I came across the Chilean rental company Holiday Rent. But do you have any recommendations for Argentine rentals?
Because, if I can’t return the vehicle in the same city as pickup, I’d prefer—and it’d likely be cheaper—to at least return it in the same country.

My trip to South Africa is starting to take shape.
However, I'm struggling to figure out the route through Kruger Park. I can't seem to find the information I need about getting around.
Coming from the south, I plan to arrive on Day 1 in the early afternoon at Malelane or Crocodile Bridge.
Do some shopping in Malelane (or Crocodile Bridge main area) and stay overnight outside the park.
Leave on Day 2 at 5 AM for the park. Explore the southern part of the park.
Stay overnight around Skukuza or Lower Sabie. (We don’t want to stay in one of the park’s big camps. We’re looking for a lodge around 200 €.
Head out on Day 3 for a self-drive safari, maybe as far as Orpen.
We’d like to stay in a private reserve on nights 4 and 5.
We’re not sure which one or how to get into a private reserve. Do we need to exit Kruger Park?
On Day 5, we’d like to leave to visit Blyde Canyon (on Day 6).

When I arrive in Divundu, I’d like to head straight to the Khwai area early in the morning to one of the campsites in the Khwai Development Trust. Is the drive doable with a good 4x4 in a day?
We’ll spend 2 nights in Khwai, then 2 or maybe 3 nights in the Moremi area (Third Bridge/Xakanaxa/Mboma) before heading back to Maun to wrap up our journey.
Is that too much time to spend in each place?
