Hi everyone,

We’re heading to Florida at the end of October with our 2- and 4-year-olds. I’d love to get your thoughts on the itinerary we’re considering.

Since we’re traveling with little ones, we’re keeping the number of stops limited to make things easier for them and avoid packing and unpacking every day.

Here’s the plan so far: Day 1: Land in Orlando at 6 PM Day 2: Orlando (rest day) Day 3: Disney World (Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party starting at 4 PM, so we’ll pick one Disney park for the day) Day 4: Orlando > Anna Maria Island (stopping in St. Petersburg) Day 5: Anna Maria Island Day 6: Anna Maria Island > Fort Myers or Naples Day 7: Fort Myers or Naples Day 8: Visit Sanibel and stay overnight in Fort Myers or Naples Day 9: Fort Myers or Naples > Miami (via Shark Valley) Day 10: Miami Day 11: Miami > Keys (stopping in the Everglades?) Day 12: Day trip to Key West Day 13: Keys Day 14: Keys and return to the airport in the evening for our flight

For the Keys, I was thinking Marathon or Islamorada might be a good base with kids—less driving on the last day, too. What do you think?

For the 3 nights in Fort Myers or Naples, where do you think is better to stay? We’d like to spend one day on Sanibel and the rest relaxing. We’ve only planned 2 nights in Miami. Is that a mistake? Should we cut one night from Naples/Fort Myers to add an extra night in Miami? If so, maybe skip Sanibel. Also, does ending in the Keys instead of Miami seem like a bad idea? We’d be staying in Marathon or Islamorada, which keeps prices more reasonable since it’s a weekday. Plus, it lets us break up the drive from Naples to the Keys without adding an extra stop near the Everglades, which would mean another hotel change for the kids.

Thanks so much for your help!

hi, I assume you're renting a car. Two days in Miami is enough to enjoy the Art Deco style, in particular. Otherwise, the city is very large and spread out, but the most interesting spot is still Miami Beach

Hi, thanks for your feedback! Yes, sorry I forgot to mention that detail. We’ll rent a car as soon as we arrive at Orlando airport and return it in Miami. Thanks for your thoughts on Miami ☺️

I have nothing but praise for your itinerary, except that it’s a real shame to go to Florida and not visit the rivers like Weeki Wachee Spring. Spending a full day kayaking down it is really enjoyable.

I also love the Crystal River and Homosassa area.

And the Rainbow River near Dunnellon.

This whole part of Florida feels timeless—very far from the bling-bling.

Hi Olive,

Thanks so much for your feedback and recommendation! I was thinking we could spend either our first or last day in Orlando at Kings Landing near Apopka Park. Is it better to prioritize Weeki Wachee Springs? How would you fit it into the schedule? I’m wondering if 3 nights in Naples might be a bit too much, and if Miami with young kids might also be a bit limited, so we could maybe take 1 or 2 nights from those two stops instead. Thanks for everything! 😊

Well, if you're asking for my opinion, with young kids, I'd recommend Weeki Wachee Springs and Homosassa Springs over Miami, or even Anna Maria Island... (Why Anna Maria Island specifically?) But I'm not sure about kayaking at 2 years old... that seems young. The trip lasts nearly 3 hours and it can get pretty bumpy. You can go to Homosassa Springs, where there's a state park that rehabilitates animals, including manatees. And at Weeki Wachee, in the park, kids can see mermaids, take a boat ride on the river, watch an animal show, and swim in the river.

Day 1: Land in Orlando at 6 PM Day 2: The time difference works in your favor. You'll probably be wide awake at 5 AM and full of energy... I'd suggest a day split between the pool, International Drive (lots of attractions), some outlet shopping, and Old Town Kissimmee. Day 3: Disney World (Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party starting at 4 PM, so choose a Disney park for the day). For park choice with little ones, it’ll likely be Animal Kingdom or Magic Kingdom. Probably Magic Kingdom. Day 4: Orlando (still around Orlando, I’d recommend staying in Kissimmee on US 192) > Weeki Wachee (2-hour drive). Morning: mermaids and Weeki Wachee River; afternoon: Homosassa Springs. Stay overnight in Weeki Wachee—there’s a hotel right across from the park, if I remember correctly. Day 5: Drive to Tarpon Springs, stop for an hour or two (sponge-fishing village) (48-minute drive). Picnic on Honeymoon Island, then beach time in the afternoon (28-minute drive). I’d suggest driving straight to Fort Myers while the kids nap in the car (about 2.5 hours). Day 6: Sanibel and Captiva Island—picnic and explore Sanibel. I’d recommend heading to the very end of Captiva Island for the beach. Stay overnight in Fort Myers or Sanibel. If budget allows, splurge on a beachfront hotel in Sanibel for the kids. Day 7: Fort Myers > Naples (1 hour 20-minute drive). Evening in Naples. Day 8: Full day in Naples. Day 9: Naples > Miami Beach via Shark Valley. Be careful with very young kids—take the tram, not bikes. Keep an eye on them! (Total drive time: 2.5 hours without stops.) There are several possible stops along Route 41 in the mangroves. Day 10: Miami Beach. Day 11: Miami Beach > Keys (stop at the Everglades?). I’d suggest visiting the Gator Farm with the kids—alligator show, airboat tour, then drive to Key West. Day 12: Full day in Key West. Day 13: Drive back through the Keys > overnight in Key Largo. Day 14: Return to the airport in the evening for your flight. There you go, a quick rundown...

Hi, With young kids, Miami Beach doesn’t seem very suitable to me. Constant noise, music in shops and other establishments, traffic, sirens—even though South Beach has a certain charm with its wide beaches. Naples is expensive (just as much as South Beach), but it’s a little paradise. Very pretty, clean, quiet, with a gorgeous 5th Avenue South, nice marinas, and the beaches are beautiful, even if hurricanes have caused some damage, especially to Naples Pier. I think stopping halfway through the Keys is a great idea. The Everglades are a must-do as well.

Hi Olive,

Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to help me review my itinerary! The support on this forum is amazing

For Anna Maria Island, I’d read reviews saying it was really nice. Do you think Sanibel is a better bet?

Thanks for the schedule—it looks great! Splitting the Keys into two stays between Key West and Key Largo definitely makes sense.

And thanks for all these invaluable tips! !

Hi Jean-Louis,

Thanks so much for your feedback on my itinerary! I’m actually wondering whether to skip Miami or just stay near the Everglades and visit Miami for the day instead. It does seem less suitable for kids. Thanks again for the tips!

Hello,

I’ll admit I prefer Sanibel and Captiva, but it’s a matter of taste. The most secluded, wild beaches are at Lover's Key State Park, south of Fort Myers Beach.

In Key Largo, there isn’t much besides John Pennekamp State Park offshore (great snorkeling trips). It’s a huge marine reserve. It’s up to you whether you want to take your time on the way back, but Key Largo is closer to the airport and way nicer than Florida City.

If you’ve got some time, take one or two snorkeling excursions in the Keys—masks, snorkels, and floats for the kids—and go check out the coral and fish.

The best excursion I’ve done was "Danger Charter" in Key West. A bit pricey, but absolutely amazing! On a sailboat with not too many people, kayaks to paddle through the mangroves offshore, and snorkeling in turquoise water...

To add to what’s already been suggested, I’d say the Gulf Coast (Gulf of Mexico) is pretty much the same everywhere—long stretches of white-sand beaches. So, to make the most of it with two "little ones" and limit hotel changes, I’d only stop in one place.

Personally, I think Fort Myers or Bonita Springs are well-located with reasonably priced hotels. But at this time of year, it won’t be peak season, so you should be able to find good deals in plenty of spots.

My top pick, especially with kids, is the Ringling Museum in Sarasota!

Thanks so much for this tip! Even for Sarasota, do you recommend doing the visit as a day trip from Fort Myers? I’ll check out this museum more closely! Thanks again for taking the time to reply and for your advice! 🙂

Even for Sarasota, do you recommend doing the day trip from Fort Myers?

In my opinion, yes. It seems better than changing hotels, even if it means extra driving (but it's easy via I-75). Anyway, even without kids, that works for me. Or you could look for a hotel between the two, like around Port Charlotte.
