Hi, I was wondering if it's possible to rent a vehicle in Melchor de Mencos (Guatemala-Belize border)? Are there any rental agencies there? If so, thanks for any info!

First question: where do you want to go with the 4x4? In Melchor de Mencos, the options are really limited—you can only drive to Flores or cross the border into Belize, which is right at the end of the Pan-American Highway.

Alternatively, you can head to the El Naranjo site northwest of Melchor; that road’s doable since it’s in decent shape. Otherwise, the other options are deep-jungle tracks, and if it rains, you risk getting completely stuck. And if that happens, no one will come looking for you unless you’ve left your itinerary somewhere. With the vehicle stuck, you could be stranded for days in the middle of the jungle. From what I know, there’s also a dirt road from Melchor de Mencos heading north toward Rio Azul, probably passing near Laguna Yaloch.

But again, if you’re planning to drive on those tracks, let someone know your route.

2. To answer your question: Melchor de Mencos is a tiny village—there’s barely a hotel, I’ve never seen a tourist there, and I can’t guarantee you’ll find a rental place. It’s not much better on the Belize side either; San Ignacio doesn’t have many options. So your best bet is to rent in Flores.
