Hello,

We’re planning a long-term trip starting in April with our 4x4, beginning in the USA. We’re still looking for car insurance that covers Canada and the USA.

We’ve read quite a few forums, but we’re hoping for some help (from fellow travelers).

Thanks in advance for your tips!

This topic comes up regularly on the forum with some leads, but I don’t think I’ve read about what THE solution travelers like you have actually found in the end.

It always used to be: you need an address (be a resident?) in the country.
Le vol est trop important dans un voyage pour ne regarder que le prix.

Hi, I’m currently in the USA with a French camper van that I managed to get insured through Pierre Girardi Assurances Sathers in Los Angeles. I wanted to rent a Smart car, but they couldn’t insure it. Only recreational vehicles like camper vans, motorcycles, or scooters can be covered. A Canadian insurer might be able to cover it, but no more than 6 months in the USA—and even then, only if they feel like it (La Capitale Insurance). Best, Vincent

Thanks so much, Vincent! We just sent an email to Sathers Insurance. We’ll keep you posted. Best regards, 🙂 Cendrine

Watch out for the temporary import deadline—no more than one year in the U.S. territory 🤪

Hi there,

We're planning a "quick" road trip in our camper van from Canada down through the USA to Mexico and beyond, staying within the 90-day limit for Canada + USA to avoid needing visas.

As we're budgeting, could anyone share what the monthly cost of vehicle insurance typically is?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, On one hand, you can stay 90 days in Canada + 90 days in the US or apply for a B2 visa for 6 months. On the other hand, Sathers insurance only covers you for a year, not less. For a camper van valued at $50,000, I have comprehensive insurance for around $900. Best regards, Vincent

Thank you so much Vincent, we’ve just sent an email to Sathers insurance. We’ll keep you posted. Best regards, 🙂 Cendrine

Hi Cendrine, 🙂 Could you share your experience with your vehicle insurance? We’re currently in Canada (Vancouver) in the middle of customs clearance, and we emailed Mr. Girardi at Sathers insurance but haven’t heard back. Should we call instead? How long should we wait for a response? Best regards, and safe travels while we wait for your update.

Hi,

I’m back now. Mr. Girardi gets a lot of emails from curious folks and doesn’t always reply. In the subject line of your email, specify "insurance request," and I think he’ll get back to you. Otherwise, call his office at (805) 644-8600, preferably in the morning around 9 AM (California time). As a last resort, in Canada, a local insurer can cover you by registering you at their office (like Girardi does), but you must not spend more than 6 months in the USA. An insurer from La Capitale had offered me this option. Best regards, Vincent

Hi, We're in touch with a Canadian insurer who claims they can insure our vehicle. We're meeting them at their office tomorrow... If it doesn't work out, I'll follow up with Mr. Girardi. In our case, we're planning less than 2 months in Canada and 3 months in the USA, for a total of under 6 months... Before heading to Mexico, where it's apparently easier to get insurance (at the land border crossing, like in Asian countries).

So here’s the feedback. The insurance agent we contacted backed out and kept referring us to ICBC... 😔 After an hour on the phone with ICBC—the British Columbia federal office that has a monopoly on vehicle insurance—we were basically told to contact an insurance company in the US. Translation: you can’t insure your vehicle if it’s not registered in North America... 😞 They clearly don’t know about the famous CPD... And the concept of "transit" was even more confusing than Chinese. I managed to reach Mr. Girardi by phone. He was really nice but confirmed he can’t insure foreign vehicles at the moment. However, he kindly gave me a contact on the East Coast of the US who might be able to provide insurance for foreign vehicles... Unfortunately, Ms. Blood wasn’t available, so I’m waiting for her to call me back... Fingers crossed!

Hi, It's good to know that Girardi no longer insures French RVs. For those who might need it after you, please share Madame Blood's contact details. Best regards, Vincent

Mr. Girardi is no longer temporarily insuring French vehicles. He’s currently in negotiations to be able to offer this service to travelers again. Please contact Ms. Blood, mentioning that he gave you the following details: Ms. Sue Blood, sue@thuminsurance.com Tel: (1)800 866 07 77 For now, she’s sent us a form to return, and we’re waiting for her response.

Here’s the latest info on insuring a foreign vehicle in the USA/Canada: First off, we just finalized ours online and by phone. In the end, it only took us 24 hours. We didn’t go with Ms. Blood’s offer—$1,500 for 6 months in our case. Meanwhile, the former nomads gave us two other contacts: Mr. Jens Haselhuhn, Lions Group International. - Phone: (1) 239 368 55 32 - Email: jens@lionsgroupinsurance.com This is the solution we chose—super responsive, all exchanges were done within 24 hours via email and phone. Total: $444 for 1 year, with a refundable balance if you show proof of new insurance (after 6 months).

We also contacted Mr. Aaron Thun from Norshor Agency Inc. for a quote. He got back to us quickly, and we sent him all the documents requested by the agencies (passport copies, international driver’s permit, vehicle registration, and photos of the vehicle). Unfortunately, he wasn’t as fast as his colleague mentioned above in providing a quote. - Email: athunontop@aol.com

Really nice of you to share the info. I’m also planning a trip with my own vehicle in the US. Did you handle all the paperwork in French, and did the insurer list your address as theirs? Also, is this insurance renewable for several years in a row? If so, how do you handle the authorization to leave a vehicle in the US for only one year?

Could you tell me what vehicle you insure? I'm looking into how to insure a Roda Trek bought in Canada for 4 months in Canada and 2 months in the US? Even Alessie told us yesterday that she no longer insures and that, since each US state has its own legislation, it's currently very complicated. Thanks so much for your reply
OL Oliwsz ·
Hello, Mr. Gerardi is French-speaking, but everyone else communicates in English. We didn’t ask them if they spoke French. Our vehicle is a Renault B110. This insurance is valid for 1 year, presumably renewable, but since it doesn’t concern us—we’re only staying in North America for 6 months total—we didn’t look into it further...
OL Oliwsz ·
From what I understand, they insure vehicles based on the documents provided, so if the vehicle is a registered brand, there shouldn’t be any issue. That said, our B110 definitely isn’t a standard model—and on top of that, it’s been customized...

Thanks so much for all this valuable info! We’re also looking to insure our vehicle: a fully converted Mercedez Sprinter 40S ;)

We’ve been struggling from forum to forum and have already contacted tons of insurers... so far, the results: Sather's stand by Allesie sent us forms (we filled them out + documents) and no response since... SeaBridge gave us a quote for $1700 for 9 months (ouch!)

So we’re keeping at it—I’ll keep you posted as soon as I have updates with Oliwsz’s contacts. Happy prep and safe travels! :D

My camper van arrived in Baltimore on April 20th, and I found a broker in Miami who offered me insurance through Progressive. The rate was very high—$2,500 for 6 months—but it was fully comprehensive for a declared value of $110,000. My camper van is a 4x4, and I didn’t face any of the restrictions imposed by Seabridge. The contract could only be finalized 4 days before departure. Since then, this broker is no longer able to offer contracts to Europeans.

Here’s the broker Seabridge works with: Thum Insurance Agency LLC Sue Ellens In the USA: 1.800.866.0777 Outside the USA: 001.616.957.2400 Fax: 1.616.957.1204 3140 3 Mile Rd NE Grand Rapids, MI 49525 USA sue@thuminsurance.com For my part, I’ll see if I can extend my contract for another 6 months or if I’ll have to return to France...

I'm digging up this post because I'm also struggling to find insurance for a 6-month road trip between the USA and Canada in 2027.

I've already sent quite a few emails, and the responses aren't great: For example, Thum Insurance offers coverage at $4,000 for 6 months, but it excludes Canada, and the deductibles are insane.

I'd like to know what the best options are currently for insuring vehicles registered abroad for both the USA and Canada.

Thanks for all your tips!
