Loy Krathong est une fête magnifique dans tout le royaume
Perso le + beau que j'ai vu est Sukkothai:
Effectivement Sukhothaï c'est sympa mais le plus beau pour moi c'est à Chiang Mai avec le plus grand lâcher de lanternes dans le ciel lors du Yee Peng Festival et de superbes cérémonie à la bougie notamment celle du temple Wan Pan Tao (voir ici).

Ce n'est pas un "festival" et cela ne dure que quelques heures , du coucher de soleil à +- minuit .
Les gens vont faire des "offrandes" , le plus souvent un peu de riz/quelques fleurs et une mini bougie sur une feuille qu'on dépose dans l'eau + de mini montgolfières de +- 20 cm avec aussi une bougie et cela monte dans le ciel .
Certaines femmes en profitent pour mettre leur habit de cérémonie , +- sari très flatteur avec coiffe compliquée et certains commerces exhibent de belles offrandes . Pour les lieux :
1) Nong Khai à l'extrême centre -nord , face à Vientiane : le long du Mékong , beau panorama nocturne .
2) Pattaya ( vous en faites pas , il y en a qui vont hurler ! ) avec de belles offrandes , de nombreuses femmes parées et énormément de ces lanternes le long de la plage
3) Bangkok bien sûr car en plus il y a un superbe défilé l'après-midi des barques royales (toujours retransmis à la télé) sur le fleuve : un monde fou !

Le lâcher de lanternes est devenu payant non?
Yi Peng est un peu en décalage avec Loy Krathong et pas de date officielle publiée pour 2015 pour le moment. Mon vol retour sera dans la nuit du 26 au 27 novembre donc pas sûre que je puisse y assister.
Pour Loy Krathong, j'hésite entre Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Sukhothai et Ayutthaya...

A Sukhothai c'est très sympa et l'occasion d'entrer dans le parc la nuit.
En fait, il y a moyen de faire les 2 car en général à Sukhothai, les festivités durent plusieurs jours donc on peut y être avant Loy Krathong et être le jour J à Chiang Mai.

Que faut-il voir à Chiang Mai pendant Loy Krathong à part le lâcher de lanternes?
Et pour le lâcher de lanternes, où faut-il aller? Mae Jo university?
Pour moi les inratables à Chiang Mai c'est le Yee Peng Festival à Mae Jo et la cérémonie du Wat Pan Tao (je vous avez mis les liens dans mon 1er message pour les infos pratiques et photos). Après, vous avez d'autres choses évidemment comme les radeaux mis dans les douves au le lac du parc ou la rivière et les lâchers de lanternes plus modestes devant Thapae Gate.
Des lâchers de lanternes il y en a un peu partout mais celui dont vous parler (si c'est le grand) est probablement celui que dénonçait Tokara

J'etais a Chaing Mai pour loy kratong en 2013. Mon avis est partagé.
Oui c'est magique de voir toutes ces lanternes dans le ciel. Par contre un monde de dingue (et particulièrement des chinois en masse). Si vous choisissez chiang mai, pensez a reserver votre hotel a l'avance.
Le lendemain, je suis partis vers Chiang rai, la j'ai enfin pu respirer !! un bonheur.
Donc si la grosse foule ne vous derange pas, chiang mai pourquoi pas, sinon evitez !

Pas du tout transparent Tokara, j'essaie justement de différencier celui payant que vous dénonciez de celui gratuit de Mae Jo (si je ne me trompe pas ça doit être ca?)
Je sais que c'est à Pathum Thani mais on souvent les gens font le raccourci de dire que c'est à Bangkok. Après des lâchers de lanternes, il y en a légion.
Vous avez entièrement raison, à Chiang Mai, il y a énormément de monde ! Après, sur la plupart des événements les plus spectaculaires, il y a du monde même si c'est probablement Chiang Mai qui détient le record pour Loy Krathong.
J'ai éliminé un peu, j'hésite donc à présent entre Chiang Mai et Bangkok.
Donc pour résumé :

A chiang mai, il y aura du monde de partout et des lâcher de lanterne de partout a chaque instant.
Comme je le disais, il y a énormément de monde, c'est donc impossible pour circuler (meme les 2 roues font du sur place). Soyez en ville avant 17h (16h pour avoir de la marge). Si vous voulez vous rendre a Mae Jo, qui est en dehors de chiang mai, prévoyez bien vos déplacement. Ca risque aussi d'etre galère pour le retour de Mae Jo vers Chiang Mai !

Sans hésitation je te conseille CHIANG MAI!!! C'est dans cette ville que je l'ai vu en 2013 et j'en garde un souvenir formidable... pétards, fusées, lanternes qui illuminent le ciel!!!
On avait commencé par acheter des lanternes et on les lancait d'un pont (il y en a des tas dans la ville) puis en se balladant le long du fleuve on était arrivé dans une sorte de place ou s'était installé des resto/bar ou les thai s'amusaient à lancer des pétards.
C'est l'une des plus grande ville du pays donc il y a énormement de monde à ce moment la, il ne faut pas avoir peur de la foule!!

Je rajouterais que c'est mieux si il n'y a pas de vent, quand j'y etais, il y avait un vent fort ce qui faisait que les lanternes s'eloignaient rapidement. Sans vent, ce doit etre encore mieux.
Mais a le refaire, j'irais a Chiang Rai, l'ambiance bien plus paisible m'a beaucoup plu (mais faut dire que j'ai deja vécu l'experience magique a Chiang Mai ;-))
A chacun de faire ses choix en fonction de ce que l'on recherche ;-)
Bonjour Asianmike, toi qui as fait pas mal de Loy Krathong j'ai quelques questions. Nous arrivons à Bangkok le 25/11/2015 donc malheureusement pas le temps d'aller jusqu'à Chiang Mai. Penses tu que le 25 et le 26 novembre 2015 il y aura encore ce festival à Bangkok? Peut on voir aussi des lâché de lanternes et si oui ou? J'ai lu que cette année c'était du 24 au 26 novembre mais les lieux exacts en Thaïlande sont très peu précisé et pareil pour les lâchés de lanternes. Difficile de voir s'il y a ça aussi à Bangkok?

Je trouve la question très intéressante, et elle concerne aussi loy krathong 2015. D'ailleurs la réponse m'intéresse le 25 je serais à Bangkok :-)
Des vrais gros lâchers de lanternes à Bangkok, je ne crois pas qu'il y en est d'organisé ? En tout cas pas à ma connaissance. Je pense même qu'un lâcher comme celui du Yee Peng Festival à Chiang Mai ne serait pas autorisé dans la capitale.
Par contre, les endroits où est fêté Loy Kratong à Bangkok sont toujours les mêmes.
Après, il n'est pas impossible que les autorités interdisent les lâchers de lanternes. Chaque année, elles déclenchent des incendies. Mais vous aurez au moins les petits radeaux avec bougie et bâton d'encens sur les rivières et cours d'eau.

C'est à priori le 24 novembre mais bien malheureusement nous serons dans le train de nuit chiang mai - Bangkok le soir du 24 novembre :/ Nous ne sais pas qu'il y avait ce festival au moment où nous avons réservé.. du coup, si cela dure plusieurs jours nous aurons peut être l'occasion de pouvoir y assister ailleurs..
Autre question, si toutefois nous loupons loy kratong, est ce que quelqu'un connait la date du yee peng festival pour cette année?

Alors non, ce ne sera pas le jour où nous arrivons en thailande mais c'est malheureusement le jour où nous quittons chiang mai.
Si ça tombe le 25 c'est super, nous ne serons plus dans le train :)
Bon, le seul inconcevennient c'est que nous serons sur phuket (pour partir à koh yao noi) mais à priori quelqu'un disait que c'est très beau la bas alors croisons les doigts.

Je part cette année pour Loy Krathong à Chiang Mai, je suis très intéressé pour savoir le parcours que vous avez fait à Chiang Mai pour le festival
J'aimerai beaucoup assister au lâché de le lanterne, le Yi Peng est ce que vous vous y êtes rendue? Est ce qu'il y a un lâché de lanterne lors de la cérémonie au Wat Phan Tao?
Pour loy krathong à chiang mai j'ai assisté à la cérémonie au Wat pan tao (qui a lieu 1 ou 2 jours avant les dates officielles de loy krathong), et j'ai assisté à la journée d'ouverture du festival avec une parade et le lâché des krathong sur l'eau.
Malheureusement vol retour oblige... je ne suis pas resté les autres jours de loy krathong.
En 2015 il n'y avait plus de lâché de lanternes gratuit. Les années avant il y avait un lâché gratuit et un lâché payant. L'année dernière il n'y avait plus que le payant, de mémoire très chèr et il faut acheter les places dès leur mise en vente car ça a un succès fou. Je n'ai donc pas d'avis sur le lâché puisque je n'y ai pas assisté.
Dans toute la ville il y a des gens qui lâche des lanternes, je l'ai fait pour ma part au niveau du pont kaeo narawat rd. Le soir il y avait plein de vendeur de boissons et de bouffe sur le quai et caché au milieu 1 ou 2 vendeur de lanterne en papier.
Concernant la cérémonie du Wat pan tao, pas de lâché de lanterne. C'est une cérémonie religieuse. L'arbre du temple est décoré et il y a des bougies partout au pied de l'arbre. Les jeunes moines en fin de cérémonie dépose des krathong. En fin de cérémonie il y avait un spectacle musique et danse traditionnelle. En bref c'était génial !
PS: on a faille se faire avoir, à 17h on est allé demandé au temple s'il y avait bien la cérémonie le soir même, la personne nous a répondu que non c'était une soirée privée et qu'il fallait revenir le lendemain...la nuit tombée on repasse devant le temple, la cérémonie publique était en cours...on a failli loupé ça !

I didn’t plan to return to Thailand this year, but my health conditions mean it’ll be the best place for me to stay between two trips to India. The tourism setup there is so well-organized that it’s the most "comfortable" country for a short visit. Thailand feels too sanitized for my taste, and there’s too much religion, Buddha, and the King, but it’s still the best option given how my health has been evolving. I’d considered two weeks in ThaTon for hiking, but I got too sick from the burn-offs during my trips to the mountains around Chiang Rai. So I’m not sure where to go this year. Definitely not the sea, touristy spots, or the mountains with burn-offs...

In 1996, we crossed Vietnam from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike—Minsk bikes we bought in Saigon. I haven’t been back since, and it seems like a lot has changed.
- We’re heading to the south (well, the north and center) with the family in July-August (3 people).
- Is the road network more developed now? Back then, there was only National Route 1 from south to north. I’m thinking of renting a car this time (no motorbike with the family—though in ’96, they had a Jawa sidecar for sale, and we hesitated… maybe it’s for the best).
- Is Halong Bay really something to avoid because of overtourism? Even back then, it was pretty crowded. Is there a less touristy alternative?
- We’ll be traveling from Hanoi down to Danang (the only city we didn’t stop in back in ’96). Even though it’s a bit overhyped in a Chinese-tourist kind of way (from what I’ve read), we’re only going for the beach—pure relaxation for 7 days. The beaches are stunning, and I know the South China Sea is warm like coffee.
- Then, we’ll visit Hoi An, where I stopped in ’96. It was already popular with backpackers back then, but no glowing boats or all the touristy fuss!
- After that, Hue, where I have great memories—it’s a beautiful city.
- And also the nature around Ninh Binh, followed by 2-3 days in Hanoi.
That’s the plan. I’d love to hear any tips to avoid mass tourism, and if anyone’s done this before:
- Is it possible to rent a car in Danang and drop it off in Hanoi?

I’m struggling to wrap up the end of my itinerary, even though it’s pretty straightforward (long but simple).
Last year, we did Malaysia (KL and the mainland + around Kuching).
Day 1 – Arrive in Kota Kinabalu early, stroll around town and hit the must-sees.
Day 2 – Excursion to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, snorkeling at 3 islands.
Day 3 – Hike around Mount Kinabalu without summiting (450 per person, no way).
Day 4 – Poring Hot Springs + evening flight to Sandakan.
Day 5-6-7 – Kinabatangan River (still looking for the right guide).
Day 8 – Sepilok for the orangutans, the Sun Bear Centre, and Rainforest Discovery Centre.
Day 9 – Selingan, turtle island.
Day 10 – Head to Semporna.
Day 11-12-13-14 – Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai.
Day 15 – Bohey Dulang.
Day 16 to Day 25: I’M STUCK.
I looked into Danum Valley, but for 3 days/2 nights, they’re quoting 650 € per person—come on, that’s ridiculous.
I checked out a detour into Indonesia (still East Borneo), but I’m having trouble deciding what would be amazing.
I read about Sangalaki + Kakaban (2 islands, 1 base) / Mahakam Delta - Kutai (orangutans and river) / Sungai Boh (Dayak Kayan) – jungle & culture.
But honestly, I’m struggling to finalize this itinerary.
If we venture that way, we’d head back to KK from Balikpapan.
For a 4-month stay in Egypt, I had ENORMOUS problems. The regulations are very bureaucratic and extremely nitpicky there. For a 4-month stay in the Philippines, I was wondering if the procedures are just as complicated? I’m bringing my cell phone with an eSIM. Should I choose a plan from Canada for use in the Philippines, or should I get a plan only once I arrive? After 30 days, do I renew with the Canadian provider I chose before leaving, or do I switch to a local company? Do I need to register my phone with the authorities in the Philippines? (That was the case in Egypt.) For the 3rd and 4th months, will it be just as simple—renewing with a Canadian or local provider—or should I expect problems?

If you’ve had the experience—and since I’ve read (though it’s not very clear) that these two islands get quite crowded during this period—would you recommend booking accommodation well in advance, or is it easy to find something on the spot?

We’re heading to Vietnam as a family on July 8th for a little over 3 weeks (north and center). We’ve only booked the first 3 nights in Hanoi, and nothing else after that. We like to decide things on the spot and go with the flow, without rushing everywhere. But I’m still a bit unsure: when heading down to the center (Hue), is it better to book the overnight trains in advance? We don’t want to take any flights while we’re there—just use the overnight train for the long trips. But I’m worried we won’t get seats if we buy the tickets on the spot, say, 2 days before. What do the experts here think? And which website can we use to book the tickets? Thanks in advance for your tips!

I’d love to get some feedback on our itinerary—it’s probably pretty basic! This is our second trip to Asia and our first to Indonesia. We have three kids aged 20, 18, and 12. We land in Jakarta at 4 PM, spend 3 nights/2 days there, then take the train to Yogyakarta for 3 nights/2 days, followed by the train to Surabaya for 2 nights/1 day, then the train to Bromo for 1 day/1 night, a private driver to Ijen for 2 nights/2 days, then on to Bali (Ubud) for 4 nights/3 days, followed by Gili Air for 3 nights/2 days, Senggigi (Lombok) for 2 nights, and finally 5 nights in Kuta. I’m considering cutting the 2 nights in Senggigi to just keep Kuta and extend it to 7 nights. In Lombok, I’m not sure how to get around since I’m not comfortable with scooters... Your thoughts on all of this, and any advice, are more than welcome—don’t hesitate!
For those wondering why cities like Jakarta and Surabaya: we don’t often get the chance to visit big Asian cities, so we wanted to include that discovery in our trip. The trains between Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Probolinggo are booked. The return flight from Lombok to Jakarta is also set. Accommodations are booked but flexible (same for the trains).

No app for this one—you just hop on bus #14 at the local terminal (pay cash on board). But where do I catch it, and where’s the stop??

From what I’ve heard, it’s the Sida Express company (great name, right? 😄).
Can’t book online, but apparently, you *have* to because there’s only one bus at 8 AM.

My girlfriend and I booked our tickets with Saudia Airlines for a trip to Thailand this summer, from July 5th to August 3rd. Given the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, we’re keeping a close eye on the news.

• Have you heard anything about possible mass cancellations or if the airline is still maintaining its routes to Asia?
• Are there any travelers who’ve recently returned who could tell us if air corridors have been changed (longer flight times)?

July 30: Makassar – sightseeing
July 31: Makassar – sightseeing + overnight bus to Rantepao
August 1–7: Tana Toraja with a guide
August 7: Tana Toraja to Tentena + visit Tentena
August 8: Early departure with a private driver to Ampana, then ferry to the Togian Islands
August 9–15: Togian Islands (2 different resorts)
August 15: Depart Togian Islands for Luwuk
August 16: Flight Luwuk to Makassar
August 17: Rammang Rammang
August 18: Stroll in Makassar, then return home

I also have a question about the connection between Tentena and the Togian Islands: Is it doable to leave early in the morning as planned and still be sure not to miss the ferry?

I’m currently working on a 30-day itinerary for May/June 2027.
10 days in eastern Java (Malang, Bromo, waterfalls, Meru Beriti Park, Banyuwangi, and Ijen), a short transit in Ubud for a few days, then Flores before heading back to Jakarta.
We’ll spend 15 days in Flores (the classic route: Moni, Bajawa, Riung, Ruteng, ending in Labuan Bajo).
I’d love some firsthand feedback on flights to Maumere or Ende from Bali Denpasar. I know there are no direct routes and that you have to connect through Labuan Bajo or Timor (I think), which isn’t an issue in itself.
But I’ve read here and there that flights to these destinations can be delayed—or worse, canceled—and that it’s better to fly in and out of Labuan Bajo, which isn’t exactly ideal...
