Malaysia in August: question about number of nights in Penang

Hi everyone, My 16-year-old son, my partner, and I are planning a trip to Malaysia in August.

Here’s what I’m thinking so far:

- KL (4 nights): The first day is a write-off, so that leaves 3 full days. - Cameron Highlands (2 nights): 1 full day for Mossy Forest, etc.

Now, the big question. I’m planning to go to Penang—either 3 or 4 nights. If I do 4 nights, I’ll have 3 full days to explore. If I do 3 nights, I’m thinking of spending 1 night in Ipoh.

Is Ipoh worth it for a day? Is 3 full days in Penang too much? - Perhentians (4 nights).

To finish, back to KL and a visit to Malacca, or maybe Singapore—but if it’s just for a day, it might not be worth it.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hi, This partly reminds me of the route we took back in 2018! 🙂

For Penang, 2 full days is perfect: - 1 day to explore Georgetown and its old Chinese houses, check out the street art, and head to the Jetty. - 1 day for Penang Hill, then the Kek Lok Si temple (a must-see—don’t miss it, it’s one of the temples that stood out the most during all my trips in Asia), and back to Georgetown.

You can definitely add a day if you want to take it slower.

We did 3 days, but we also toured the island with a driver—honestly, there wasn’t much to see, so that day can be skipped.

Here’s the link to the blog we kept at the time 😉 Malaysia July 2018

Have a great trip!

Hi there,

Thanks so much for the feedback!

If you have any tips, I’d love to hear them. I checked out the blog—it looks amazing.

For the Perhentian Islands, is there anything to see besides snorkeling?

Hi there, regarding the Perhentians, it's mainly about snorkeling, but you'll see blacktip reef sharks of all sizes! It'll be an out-of-this-world experience. To see the sharks, you don’t have to go on an excursion—depending on where you stay, you might even spot some right in front of your hotel! However, if you want to see turtles, I think an excursion will be necessary. Feel free to check out these two articles—they might come in handy:

For the Perhentian Islands, are there things to see or is it just snorkeling?

Snorkeling, or even diving—a great spot for a discovery dive or an Open Water course. The reef in front of Tuba Bay Resort is nice for snorkeling with kids. Otherwise, of course, there’s the chance to see turtles.

Otherwise, bubbles on the beaches, trying out different beachfront restaurants. Don’t hesitate to cross over to explore the village—few people do. We spent about 2 hours there and were the only Westerners.
