Je pars dans 7 semaines en moto en solitaire en Mongolie par les routes et pistes. J ai deja une bonne idee du trajet. Maintenant je me pose la question de savoir si je fais ce voyage au gps ou avec carte et boussole. Le prob du gps est qu il faut acheter les cartes en plus et ca devient tres cher et les cartes j ai peur de ne pas oser m aventurer en hors piste.
Donc en gros je voudrai connaitre les avantages des deux methodes.
Il y a qq années, j'ai fais une boucle d'un an à moto en solo Paris - Asie Centrale - Paris. Je me suis débrouillé avec les cartes achetées au fur et à mesure de mon itinéraire qui lui mm se déterminait au fur et à mesure. Le souci de ces cartes était leur imprécision et une échelle trop grande : du coup je ne me sentais pas assez en confiance pour prendre une piste au pifométre. C'est con mais une fois sur place on est (peut être à tord) un poil trop prévoyant. Enfin bon, tout ca pour dire que si j'avais eu un GPS sous la main cela m'aurait aidé avec les infos collectées sur place (cartes et habitants du coin) de prendre des pistes encore plus "offroad" tout en connaissant des solutions de secours en cas d'accident seul dans la pampa.
Maintenant la question est : quel matos choisir ? Là-dessus une recherche sur le site te permettra de voir les solutions dispo sur le marché (forum moto et cyclo, tous pays confondus). J'attire ton attention sur l'une d'elles : le logiciel OziExplorer installé sur un PDA. Inconvénients : autonomie et fragilité mais quelques équipements périphériques de protection peuvent régler l'affaire. Avantage : tu peux y installer toutes les cartes que tu achètes sur ton chemin ou télécharges sur le web (gratuites ou presque). Je pense en particulier aux cartes russes (qui datent et sont rédigées en cyrillique certes mais qui sont utiles surtout dans les pays d'ex-union soviétique). Le principe est que tu géoréférences la carte que tu as scannée (ca prend du temps et c'est fastidieux) et OziExplorer te place sur la carte avec une grande précision. C'est tout. Ne compte pas sur un guidage à la Tomtom. Une série d'outils de création de route avec waypoints sont à ta dispo pour les afficher en surimpression sur l'image de la carte. En cherchant sur le web tu trouves parfois des cartes déjà scannées avec le fichiers de georéférencement Ozi (OziExplorer est un logiciel largement utilisé dans le monde entier et en particulier par les 4x4istes) : tu n'as plus rien à faire sauf de les copier sur ton PDA et roule !
Je rentre pas plus dans les détails mais c'est une solution à étudier (mais pas à la dernière minute !).

J ai regarde un peu les pages sur les pda. Mais j ai peur que cette solution ne convienne pas en offroad avec la poussiere et la pluie. De plus je viens de penser que l achat d un pda ne me permettra pas de me passer d un mini pc dont le disque dur pourra lui contenir les photos que je dechargerai dessus au fur et a mesure du voyage.
J envisage la toutes les possibilites , n hesite pas a me contredire ;)
Et en cas d achat d un gps classique, que me conseillez vous sachant que je n ai pas un budget de ouf et que j aimerai utiliser le gps en off road moto et quad et en alpinisme. J ai pense au garmin etrex hcx et au map 62
Puis dans le cas des pda, je suis perdu, donc s il y a un modele qui sort du lot je suis preneur
Ozi explorer s'installe aussi sur mini PC auquel il faut connecter une antenne GPS. L'écran est plus grand mais reste à trouver la solution d'installation sur la moto…

Pour se servir d'un pc + gps il te faut les cartes de mongolie. Tu peux les télécharger sur le net, elles sont fournies avec les fichiers de calibrage pour oziexploreur. http://en.poehali.org/maps
Maintenant deux solutions , soit tu roules avec un pc fixé sur ton guidon , et là il ne faut pas qu'il soit trop important et qu'il résiste aux vibrations, poussières, eaux etc ...Dans ce cas un mini pc avec dique dur ne convient pas. Il existe cependant ( pas très facile à trouver ) des minis pc de marque assus qui n'ont pas de disque dur, mais une mémoire flash, donc insensible aux vibrations, cependant pour un usage outdoor sur une moto je ne suis pas sûr du résultat.Et rouler avec un pc + un gps sur le guidon c'est peut-être un peu casse-G....!
La seconde solution étant de n'allumer le pc que de temps en temps pour faire le point. L'avantage du pc étant que tu peux tracer ton circuit sur l'écran et transferer les wp au gps, ensuite tu ranges le pc et tu te laisses guider par le gps.
Il existe également des gps grand écran dans lesquels tu peux charger les cartes de Mongolie car ces appareils sont vendus avec le logiciel oziexploreur. voir le site " Globe 4x4 "

je pense partir sur la solution du mini pc avec un gps à part car en off road, le pc ne tiendra pas et je peux réutiliser le gps pour d'autres activités qu'en moto. Si je fais la synthèse de ce que vous me dites je dois prendre un mini pc qui me permettra de décharger les photos, de faire le point lorsque j'aurai du wifi, je ne pense pas prendre d'antenne satellite car ça doit être cher et il doit y avoir un abonnement là dessus.
Pour le mini pc on m'a conseillé le samsung n210: vous en pensez quoi?
Pour les modèles de gps, que penser des garmin etrex et map 62 pour utilisation en moto off road et pédestre en montagne?
Pour info, tu n'as pas besoin d'abonnement pour une antenne externe.
Sinon, je pense aussi que la solution mini-PC + antenne externe est risquée. La solution la plus compatible avec ton programme est de prendre un GPS qui prend les cartes OziExplorer (écran plus petit mais plus solide et plus d'autonomie). Va faire un tour sur la discussion dont j'ai donné le lien plus haut, dans laquelle un forumeur donne la référence de deux GPS robustes qui correspondraient à tes besoins (moto, rando, …).

je pense que tu fais une confusion antenne satellite et gps. Si tu prends un mini pc ( samsung ou autres ) et que tu as le logiciel oziexploreur chargé dedans , tu n'as pas besoin de wifi pour faire le point. Tu connecte ton gps ( etrex par exemple ) au pc (port usb) et le logiciel te situe sur la carte que tu aura préalablement chargée dans le pc et ceci au milieu de nulle part. Pas besoin
d 'antenne sat ni de connection internet, c'est ozi+le gps qui communiquent entre eux.
Donc le pc tu le sorts uniquement de temps en temps si tu es perdu pour qu'il te donne ta position sur la carte et le reste du temps tu navigues avec le gps sur le guidon de la moto. Ozieploreur te permet de créer des wp à l'écran en suivant par exemple une piste et ensuite de les transferer sur le gps.
Pour info je serai en mongolie vers le 30 juillet, déplacement en 4x4 après avoir traversé le kasackhstan direction Mer d'Aral et je compte me rendre vers Oulan-B. pour ensuite remonter le désert de gobi avant de rentrer par le nord du Kasackhstan.

Beau voyage en perspective. J'ai fait l'aller retour à moto l'année dernière France, désert de Gobi, France. 20300 km (laurent07.canalblog.com)
J'avais un petit GPS magellan 320 sur lequel j'ai rentré préalablement une cinquantaine de points à partir de google earth, et ce en fonction de mon itinéraire. Pas d'étrier, les 3 fois où je l'ai utilisé j'ai arrêté la moto et marché quelques dizaines de mètres le GPS dans la main le temps d'avoir l'azimut.
Je m'en suis servi 3 x 5mn en tout et pour tout pour confirmer ce que je pensais être la bonne piste. Une boussole m'aurait suffit je pense mais le fait d'avoir le GPS donne une petite sécurité psychologique.
Donc si tu ne fais pas de hors piste, ne te lance pas dans de gros investissements. Cela ne sert à rien.
merci du tuyau, finalement j'ai pris le vista hcx de chez garmin. on peut naviguer a l'azimut et avec une carte 16 GB je devrais rentrer deux ou trois waypoints ;)
En tout cas j'ai tout le matos, la versys ne devrait pas tarder à arriver, et aprèsplus qu'à la préparer pour le voyage et faire du TT et c'est bon.
D'ailleurs je cherche une marque de pneus style pirelli mt 21 pour faire du touterrain mais existant en 17 pouces pour l'avant et l'arrière, si quelqu'un a une idée car je galère :)

Je prefere de faire un tour a moto en juin ou juillet. Je n ai pas encore defini l itineraire. Quand a la moto je vais louer une chinoise, qu en pensez vous vu l etat du reseau routier.

I just realized I’ve been registered on VoyageForum since... March 28, 2012 😊. Yet, I’ve barely participated until now.
August 1, 2026, will mark a somewhat special milestone: 5 years on the road.
We left Switzerland on August 1, 2021 with a simple idea: let chance decide our direction. We placed a bottle of wine on a world map, spun it... and it chose our first destination.
A year later, when we arrived in Morocco, we faced a new choice: continue toward Africa or head to Asia. This time, a tarot card game made the decision. Since then, we’ve tried to keep this journey as open to the unexpected as possible.
Today, that adds up to about 120,000 km, 46 countries, and over 1,800 days on the road—mostly by motorcycle, but also by sailboat, train, bus, hitchhiking, or on foot when adventure calls.
Our guiding thread isn’t just the motorcycle, but service exchanges. Instead of simply passing through countries, we try to stop regularly to lend a hand to the people we meet. So far, that’s about 600 days of volunteering.
Over the years, we’ve:
renovated a house in Croatia
made earth bricks in the Moroccan desert
helped sail a boat through the Greek islands
looked after houses, dogs, horses, a camel... and lots of other animals
worked at a street art festival in Morocco
created videos for local associations and projects
worked the grape harvest on the Tibetan plateau
been accredited as "media" for the World Nomad Games in Central Asia
Some of the moments that have stuck with us the most include six months in China, a night spent on the Great Wall, the Pamir Highway, the Silk Road, three months in Taiwan, and the incredible encounters in the mountains of Central Asia.
We travel on Falkor, our lucky dragon—a 2014 BMW F800GS that’s been with us since the start and is starting to have some great stories of its own.
While we share our adventure on Instagram, Polarsteps, and YouTube, that’s not why we’re here. The forum’s rules about promotion are clear, and I totally get them. If I’m finally taking the time to write, it’s mostly because after five years on the road, I thought our experience might be useful to other travelers.

I’m planning a motorcycle road trip to Armenia and Georgia in September 2026 or May 2027. I’m looking for one or more riders (male or female) who’d like to explore these countries with me.
Along the way, we’ll visit Cappadocia, the capitals Yerevan, Tbilisi, Sofia, Skopje, and other cities—we can finalize the route and roadbook later.
This trip requires experience with long motorcycle journeys, as we’ll cover around 7,000 km over 5 or 6 weeks (or more, depending on sightseeing and time spent).
I don’t expect dozens of applicants, since motorcycle riders are few and far between on this forum, but I’m putting this out there anyway.
I’m starting to think about a trip that’s really close to my heart: Algeria by motorcycle, specifically the southern part of the country. It’d be for January 2025, and I’ve got two main questions:
Is it possible for an individual on a motorcycle to travel freely, outside of any organized tour, or does the regulation require some kind of supervision in the Algerian Sahara region?
Is the Hoggar massif accessible by road or by (rideable) tracks?
Beyond the official recommendations, I’m really looking for your firsthand experiences.

Why not explore the Peloponnese!
I’m not particularly drawn to museums, ruins, or monuments.
I want to experience local life—small villages, seaside spots, beaches, and the interior if the landscapes are extraordinary.
Ideally, coming from Athens, I’d take a bus or train to get as close as possible to a starting point, then rent a scooter (125cc) to explore by taking secondary roads or even coastal paths. I’d stay in 2-3 places for a few days each to discover their surroundings.

What do you think would be the ideal itinerary?
From Athens, the best option would be to take either a flight or a bus to Kalamata. Rent a scooter and head either west or east. Is there a tertiary road (very lightly trafficked) or a path where I can ride slowly, take it easy, and enjoy the scenery without being bothered by traffic? I’d like to go all the way to Monemvasia, still hugging the coast. I need to find a way to avoid returning to Kalamata to drop off the scooter and catch a flight—maybe a small town where the train stops so I can head back to Athens.

How do you get visas for the countries I’ll be crossing: Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, and Chile? Are they e-Visas, obtained at the border, or through embassies?
Where can I get vehicle insurance?

I’ve got 15 days off in June and I’m pretty undecided about where to go for a motorcycle road trip. Two strong desires are pulling me in different directions: Corsica or Norway.
Corsica has been a dream of mine for a long time: legendary roads, stunning landscapes, a unique vibe, and the perfect mix of sea and mountains. At the same time, I’m wondering if 2 weeks might be *too much* for Corsica—risking feeling like I’ve seen it all too quickly, especially on a bike.
Since I also have an extra week free in May, I could use that specifically for Corsica. Maybe splitting it into two trips would make more sense? If so, which routes or regions would be the most interesting to plan for a 7-day trip?
On the other hand, Norway is *super* appealing. The landscapes look incredible, totally different from anything I’ve experienced, and it’d be a real “wow” trip. I know 15 days is still short for such a vast country. Getting all the way to the North Cape seems pretty much impossible in that time, but I’m curious about what realistic routes could be planned.
So I’m wondering:
Is it better to save Norway for next year, take 3 weeks off, and do it *properly*?
Or are 15 days enough for a first amazing taste of the country?
I’d love to hear about your experiences—whether it’s Corsica (ideal duration, routes) or Norway (what’s realistic in 2 weeks on a bike).

Hello! We’re planning a motorcycle trip that will include a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau in June 2026.
We’re unsure (still debating) whether we should stay at a hotel on-site and get to the memorial with an Uber (leaving our bikes at the hotel) and book a guided tour, or base ourselves in Kraków and take a tour that includes transport.
One thing’s for sure—we’d prefer a guide in French since we don’t speak English 😅.

Unfortunately, I’m worried that parts of the N630 may have disappeared or merged with the A66 motorway, forcing us to ride long stretches of highway, which we’d rather avoid.

This is our first motorcycle trip in Morocco. I got my license two years ago with the dream of taking this kind of trip, and here we are! ✌️😍
In France, we usually ride between 300 to 400 km per day on roadsters. We’re not used to off-road tracks, so we’re looking for easy ones 😅—especially for me 😅.
For Morocco, I’ve planned stages of 200 to 300 km per day.

Day 2: Tafingoult - Amzarkou - Telouet (200 km - 4h34)

Day 6: Agoudim - Imilchil - Aghbala - El Ksiba (280 km - 4h45)
Day 7: El Ksiba - La Cathédrale - Zaouiat Ahansal (212 km - 4h20)
Day 8: Ahansal - Ouzoud Waterfalls via R 302 (188 km - 4h22)
