Alors voilà, avec mon mari nous nous sommes enfin décidés à faire un beau voyage, hors des limites frontalières de notre beau pays qu est la France ;o) Le pays qui nous a toujours attiré est les USA. J'ai donc fait pas mal de recherches, et nous nous sommes finalement arrêtés sur la cote Ouest. Nous avons envie de bouger, de ne pas stagner dans une seule ville, de voir un peu de paysage et de jolies grandes villes.
Après pas mal d'heures de recherches j'ai défini un itinéraire sur 12 jours (nous sommes limités par le temps étant donnés que nous avons des enfants, mais ils ne partiront pas avec nous).
J1 Arrivée San Francisco
J2, J3, J4 Visite de San Francisco qui a l'air d'être une ville magnifique et très appréciée, et des américains, et des touristes
J5 Nous allons longer la cote en passant par Santa Cruz, Monterey, Big Sur, San Luis Obispo où nous dormirons.
J6 Nous continuons notre descente en passant par Santa Barbara et arrivée sur Los Angeles
J7 et J8 Visite de LA
J9 San Diego
J10 Retour LA et vol pour Denver
J11 et J12 Visite de Denver et départ pour Paris
Qu'en pensez vous ? Passons nous trop de temps à certains endroits et pas assez sur d'autres ??? Nous sommes complètement novices en la matière, alors il se peut que nous ne priorisons pas les bonnes choses.
Y a t il des endroits que j'oublie de citer ? D autres villes interessantes a visiter sur mon parcours ? Je précise juste que Las Vegas n'est pas du tout notre priorité. Et Denver c'est une petite folie personnelle que je souhaite m'accorder, meme si ce n'est pas spécialement sur le chemin !

Pq Denver?... Si vs maintenez l'arrêt ds cette ville, il faudra y louer une voiture pour aller par exemple jusqu'au Rocky Mountain NP (pcq le tour de ville, même si il est agréable, est vite vu....)
Vs ne préféreriez pas une visite des parcs nationaux avec une arrivée-départ de Las Vegas (et visiter Valley of Fire, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Page, Monument Valley, Grand Canyon) ou une arrivée à SF, puis vol interne vers Las Vegas pour faire une mini-boucle autour de Las Vegas

De J1 à J8, RAS ça me parait bien 😇 Y compris les 3j pour SF, ça les mérite bien en effet.
C'est après que ça cloche un peu : un A/R LA<=> San Diego quasi dans la journée, c'est gacher cette jolie ville. Mais surtout le trajet est hyper chargé et te "mange" une demie journée par sens ! Attention au retour vers LAX pour ne pas rater le vol !
D'où une suggestion : pourquoi ne pas faire ce vol de San Diego à Denver ??
A propos de Denver : folie personnelle, soit... mais pour y être allé 2 fois, je n'ai rien vu de "à ne pas manquer" dans cette ville. OK, quelques beaux immeubles, une belle rue piétonne... en tout cas pas de quoi y passer 2 jours.
Par contre, à 2-3h de voiture il y a le Rocky Mountains National Park qui est magnifique avec une route à plus de 3500m !

Ah !!! Denver, c'est une ville que je souhaiterai découvrir meme si ce n'est pas spécialement "LA" plus belle ville à visiter. Effectivement nous louerons une voiture, j'ai pensé aller au red rocks amphitheatre, pour avoir un apperçu des paysages.
La visite des parcs nationaux sera pour nous l'objet d un autre voyage je pense, il faut prendre le temps de les faire et là ce n'est pas le cas, et nous préférons commencer par visiter les villes.

Pour Denver, je ne peux pas me faire une idée tant que je n'y serai pas allée, mais j'ai lu pourtant pas mal de choses disant que ce n'était effectivement pas un incontournable, mais une bien jolie ville a visiter. 2 jours sembles trop pour cela ? Comme je dis au dessus, j'avais vu le red rocks amphitheatre histoire de se mettre un peu dans l'ambiance.
Nous souhaiterions également, si c'était possible, assister à un match de baseball ou football américain, pensez vous que ca serait faisable pendant notre séjour ? (pas spécialement sur Denver, quoi qu il y ait un bien joli stade)

Oui, ils ont osé faire un aéroport à SD 🙂😛 presque en ville d'ailleurs !
Pour ces vols, n'oublie pas une simulation sur southwest.com au moins avec eux tu ne paies rien pour une valise en soute ... et ils font de très bons tarifs !
Denver : en juillet dernier, on avait prévu 2 jours, avec un musée intéressant (Science et techniques ou qq chose du genre) mais il est fermé pour déménager... alors on a taillé la route vers le sud et les villes minières de Cripple Creek, et en passant monter au Pikes Peak (4300m)
Mais je ne connais pas ton red rock... truc 😊 C'est où ??
Pour les matches : perso, le sport le plus "hard" que je pratique est la chaise longue... alors je me déclare incompétent !

Le red rocks amphitheatre est apparemment à une quinzaine de km à l ouest de Denver. "Le Red Rocks Amphitheatre est un amphithéâtre naturel fait dans la roche et situé dans le Red Rocks Park près de la localité de Morrison à l'ouest de la ville de Denver dans l'État du Colorado aux États-Unis. "
Un petit coup sur google et on peut y trouver de jolies photos.
Disons que ça donne une "toute" petite idée de ce qu on peut voir comme paysage dans la parc nationnal sans pour autant aller très loin. Parait que la ville de Morrison est pas mal à visiter, faut que j'étudie ça !

Denver est une ville sympathique mais vraiment pas "obligatoire" pour un premier voyage aux USA. Restez plutot en Californie et allez au parc de Yosemite.
N'oubliez pas que les matchs de base-ball sont long et ennuyeux pour les Europeens habitués au foot. Enfin, il y a une certaine ambiance qui peut plaire et si on connait les règles du jeu, ça peut etre interessant. Comme vous pouvez le deviner, je ne suis pas fan de base ball :-)
Avec seulement 12 jours, il y a assez de choses a voir en Californie sans aller au Colorado. (Muir Woods, Sonoma, Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, highway 49 avec les villages de la Gold Rush etc)

Alors ne me prennez pas pour une dingue 😛 mais en fait je suis une très grande fan depuis plusieurs années d'un groupe de musique de Denver. Ils ne sont pas spécialement super connus en France, mais moi j'adore. Et j'ai vraiment envie d'aller un peu sur leurs traces, sans pour autant me dire que je vais les rencontrer, faut rester lucide 😏
D'où cette envie d'aller à Denver ... biensur nous irions sur la cote Est, je ne ferais pas de détour par Denver lol mais là c'est vrai que c'est l'occasion où jamais, c'est finalement un peu sur le chemin, ça nous coupe un peu le long trajet en avion.

Quant aux vols d'avion, BA et US Airways sont des lignes classiques. Y a pas à avoir peur😉
Il faut seulement prévoir 3h d'escale minimum lors de la 1ère escale sur le territoire US, car les contrôles sont longs...
Maintenant, si tu voles avec BA, je suppose que tu partiras de Londres... et que de Londres, tu auras un vol direct jusque Denver, ou San Francisco, ou LA.
Edit: Pour le vol retour, l'escale peut être plus courte (puisqu'il y a nettement moins de contrôles)... mais 35 minutes... c'est quand même trop peu😛

Ce n'est pas pour le plaisir de contredire 😊, mais pour ma part, je ne vois pas pourquoi, parce qu'Amélie a envie de voir Denver, il faudrait faire une boucle à partir de là, et du coup, faire l'impasse sur la Californie, surtout qu'elle a envie de voir de grandes villes et "un peu" de paysage.
Pour un premier voyage aux USA, la Californie et ses grands attraits touristiques me semblent quand même plus emblématiques. Après, rien n'empêche de faire un petit stop à Denver pour quelques jours, mais de là à y faire un circuit... personnellement, je ne trouve pas que ce soit indiqué dans ce cas précis.

Ben ... je trouve que tant qu'à vouloir faire une halte à Denver, autant en profiter alors pour faire une boucle à partir de là et visiter le Rocky Mountain NP, la région de Moab (qui est une des plus belles du SouthWest 😛), Monument Valley, Mesa Verde, Great Sand Dunes et remonter à Denver
Parce que rester 2 jours à Denver sans voiture, je trouve que c'est du gâchis... à côté des merveilles toutes proches...
Personnellement, la semaine prochaine, j' atterrirai pour la 2ème fois à Denver pour commencer un périple ds le Southwest...
En 12 petits jours, je trouve qd même dommage de se dissiper... de perdre du temps ds les avions, aéroports et formalités pour louer une seconde voiture pour seulement 2 petits jours...
Pour son 2ème voyage , Amélie pourrait alors prévoir un atterrissage à LV, SF ou LA ds l'optique de visiter la Californie et la partie Utah autour de LV.
Enfin, ce n'est que mon avis... Je ne donne que des idées... C'est bien sûr Amélie qui choisira😉

Sur le fond, ça se tient, bien sûr, mais si je me reporte à l'époque où je n'étais jamais allée aux USA, je dois dire que j'aurais été vachement plus tentée par la Californie que par Rocky Mountain, Mesa Verde ou Great Sand Dunes, qui - encore maintenant, je l'avoue 😊, ne m'évoquent rien et ne me font pas rêver outre mesure. Monument Valley, c'est différent, évidemment. 😎
Quant aux pertes de temps et formalités de l'avion etc., l'année dernière nous avons fait une grosse semaine en Floride plus 3 jours en Louisiane, et malgré quelques a priori à ce sujet qui ont failli me faire changer d'avis, franchement, je ne le regrette pas un instant aujourd'hui. Les vols intérieurs se prennent très facilement, et quel plaisir de changer d'univers en à peine 2 ou 3 heures ! Rien n'empêche d'ailleurs Amélie de faire, par exemple, une croix sur San Diego pour passer 3 ou 4 jours dans le Colorado et en voir un peu plus. Ca, ça ferait un beau kaléidoscope ! 🙂
Mais là encore, ce n'est qu'un avis parmi tant d'autres. 🙂

perso dans les voyages le plus penible ce sont les aeroports donc je privilegie les vols avec le moins d'escale possible
en avril de cette année nous avons fait un toulouse denver avec BA (tres bien ) il y a 10 ans deja !! nous avions fait un toulouse denver via lufthansa (tres bien aussi )

Merci pour le passeport, effectivement il faut qu on s en fasse faire, ça prend combien de temps ? Et l'autorisation ESTA, c'est le fameux papier qu ils doivent avoir au moins 72h avant le départ ??? Je vais étudier la question.
Virginie, je pense effectivement que tu as réussi à cerner le type de voyage que l'on désire faire. Les parcs m'intéressent, mais ce n'est pas ma priorité pour un 1er voyage. Nous sommes très citadins ! Visiter les grandes villes, s'imprégner de l'ambiance d'une ville américaine et observer le style de vie des américains. Je suis très curieuse de tout ça. Biensur voir un peu de pays, c'est pour cela qu'on n'a pas choisi de faire new york en premier voyage. Je pense que faire la cote en voiture sera vraiment magnifique. Un petit tour autour de Denver, sera amplement suffisant ! D'ailleurs on ne souhaite pas passer par Las Vegas parce que ça n'est que parade, grands hotels et décors en tout genre, on ne recherche pas spécialement ça. Une soirée dans un petit bar à ambiance au coin d'une rue, ça c'est le top !
Tu me diras, des bars à ambiance y en a partout, mais je pense pas que ça soit la même chose là bas. Après je me ferai une idée !!!

I know you can’t see into the future any better than I can, so I’m obviously not asking what the wildfire situation will be like in a month...
But if any of you could let me know if, CURRENTLY, there are major difficulties—not just for locals, of course, but for tourists as well?

Hello everyone! Really damaged due to flooding caused by runoff after forest fires (a total mess!), does anyone in this friendly forum have any updates on the Apache Trail between Apache Junction and Roosevelt Dam? Is there still a section of the road that’s tough to navigate?
We're leaving at the end of June and will be driving the route between Buffalo and Cody. We’ve already booked our accommodations and a rodeo in Cody, but during the day, we’ll be driving between the two and I’m unsure about the itinerary.
Which route do you think is the most pleasant, interesting, or scenic between:
- The northern route via Highway 14 with Sheridan, Lowell, etc.
- The southern route with Highways 16/20/14, passing by Loaf Mountain Overlook, Powder River Pass, Ten Sleep Canyon...
We’ll be in a car, so we should be able to drive on any road.

I’m almost done planning our September road trip. After our 3-night visit to Sequoia, we’ll have a stopover night in Coalinga (to break up the drive). We’ll be staying two nights in Monterey and would like to stop along the way to visit one side of Pinnacles National Park. We’re torn between the West entrance and the East entrance, and we’d like to do a short hike of no more than 2 hours since we don’t want to arrive too late in Monterey.
This park is split into two distinct zones with no connection between them, and the mileage from Coalinga to Monterey is pretty much the same for both. Which area do you recommend visiting—east or west? And which route is the most scenic?
I’ve spotted two short hikes:
- East: Moses Spring to Rim Trail Loop
- West: Balconies Cliffs Cave Loop
Has anyone been there, or do you have another hike to suggest?

After our first trip as a young couple to the West in 2007 (yes, that doesn’t make us any younger!), we’re planning to go back in 2028, but this time as a family of four! (We have two boys who’ll be 5½ and 13 years old in the summer of 2028.)
Our plan is to combine a few big cities (SF and LA, maybe San Diego) with national parks and state parks, mostly!
Ideally, we’d like to leave at the end of June and head back to France around July 19–20, so we can enjoy the first week of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Since we already did the "loop" in 2007, there are must-see places we absolutely want to revisit—and especially share with our kids: Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, and above all, the Grand Canyon, which is still the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen on Earth!
On the other hand, some places didn’t leave a big impression on us for various reasons, so we’re not making them a priority: Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, for example.
We’re planning ahead, but might as well be smart about it😏
Do you have any tips for a fun and doable itinerary over about 20–25 days with kids, without rushing?

Just a quick question about King Canyon and Sequoia National Park.
Before our night in Miramonte, we plan to visit King Canyon. The next stop will be two nights in Three Rivers to explore Sequoia National Park. I wanted to go all the way to Roaring River Falls on the King Canyon Scenic Byway and then turn back to head to Miramonte. Since we’re coming from Oakhurst, Google Maps says it’s 300 km and 5 hours of driving. Since we also want to hike to see the sequoias (Big Stump Area and Grand Grove) before tackling the King Canyon Scenic Byway, the timing’s going to be tight. How far do you recommend going before turning back to miss as few points of interest as possible on the King Canyon Scenic Byway? Thanks for your advice, and have a great evening!

We’ll be alternating between house swaps, motels, and campgrounds. I’ve booked all the accommodations (except the campground at Bryce since sunset bookings open only 14 days in advance) and the first activities, as well as the most touristy ones.
I’m currently putting together my day-by-day roadbook and having some trouble planning certain days, like in LA or Las Vegas. Choosing hikes isn’t easy either—it’s tough to decide!

I’d like to travel along I-15N from San Diego to Las Vegas with my mom, who’s 67. We’ve explored Northern California and the California Coast over the past two years and now want to continue through the desert.
There are several attractions along the way:

- Joshua Tree National Park
- Mojave Desert
- Mojave National Preserve
- Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
- Silverwood Lake
My mom has back issues that prevent her from hiking or walking on trails with elevation changes. Is it possible to visit these places by car, or are the routes flat enough?
I’d love for her to experience the desert with an itinerary adapted to her condition. I’m also open to other points of interest that aren’t mentioned. We have 3-4 days for the trip, so we’re not in a rush—just want to explore.
I’d love to take a road trip and visit Nova Scotia. I’d appreciate some info on the best cities to see and the most interesting spots. The trip should last about 10 to 15 days, staying in hotels or motels. Thanks in advance!

Is it pretty easy to navigate Detroit Airport to catch the connecting flight to Grand Rapids (domestic flight)? There are several of them who speak English well.

**Viewpoints on the East Side:**
Are most of the viewpoints (Balancing Rock, Granite Cave, Bonsai Rock, etc.) right by the road, or do you have to hike to reach them?
**Donner Memorial State Park:**
Is it worth making a detour to Truckee to visit this park and the Truckee historic downtown?

I'm shocked by the price of the Upper Antelope Canyon tour—$175 for less than an hour… You might say, "if you can’t afford it…" But the real question is whether it’s really worth it, because $350 for two makes me feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’m a total USA addict. I’ve already done several road trips, including the East Coast and West Coast.
I’m here today because I’m planning to go back for another road trip on the West Coast. Possibly with one of my sisters and a couple of friends. It’s still just a plan for now, but I’m working on an itinerary in the meantime. Ideally, I’d leave in 2026, but I don’t have the exact dates yet—maybe April-May or September-October.
My last trip to the West Coast was in September 2014. We went for 2 weeks, but this time it’d be 3 weeks. What made me want to go back was simply a colleague who just left today. As I’m writing this, he’s on the plane. I’m so happy for him, but now all I can think about is going back.
Since I recently went to NY, I noticed that prices have really gone up. I assume the same is true for the West Coast? For 2 people over 3 weeks, what budget should I expect? We’re the type to watch our spending and find great tips.
I think we’ll arrive in San Francisco like the first time and leave from either Los Angeles or Las Vegas.

I assume many of you already know, but the America the Beautiful annual pass, which was $80, will increase to $250 starting January 1, 2026.
So if you're planning to travel before the end of December 2026, it's in your best interest to buy your pass in December 2025, since it will still cost $80 and be valid until the end of December 2026 if you purchase it in December 2025.
This price increase only applies to non-U.S. residents.
Additionally, for those who planned to visit just one park, a $100 surcharge per person will apply to access a list of 11 national parks...
For example, if there are 4 of you in a car, you’ll have to pay $35 + $400,
which comes to $435 to visit one of the 11 parks on the list (I don’t have all of them... Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, etc.).
Total madness.
The goal is to push people who only visit one park into buying the annual pass.
Last point: free entry days are over for non-residents!
