Hi everyone, I’m thinking of taking a 20-day trip to Laos in January 2026. I’m currently looking at itineraries, hotels, excursions, transport, etc. For the route, nothing’s set in stone yet, but we’d do: Vientiane - Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang - Champassak - Pakse. What do you think? Anyone have any tips? Thanks, Alain

Hi there, this is a great plan, and you’ll find several recent posts about trips to Laos right here on the forum. (A lot has changed since Covid, so stick to recent posts.)

To help you plan your trip, just a few facts: - 20 days to see part of Laos is a bit tight, but it’s doable if you focus on the main spots. - Since you want to visit both the North and the South, you’ll need to optimize your travel time—transport in Laos can be long, sometimes *very* long due to poor road conditions. You can check out my latest post: *Northern Laos in 4 weeks*, where I listed travel times for the northern part. For example, you could arrive in the North and leave from the South… or the other way around. It all depends on which airport you’re flying into in Asia.

Hi Alain, What a fantastic idea to visit Laos! I recently published a travel journal about my 18-day trip there: Some ideas on activities and routes. Laos is such a peaceful country—trying to cover it in 20 days like you’re planning will only leave you frustrated. Do less, but do it better. Just my two cents, though! If you’ve got any questions, don’t hesitate.

Hi there,

Your route is pretty classic. Personally, I’d skip Vang Vieng—the landscapes are beautiful, sure, but I just don’t click with the vibe of the town.

Vientiane is nice (I loved living there), but for tourists, there aren’t many points of interest. Luang Prabang is great, I’m a big fan of Champassak, and Pakse is really nice. You can do the loop around the Bolaven Plateau or decide to stay in Pakse, but the days will be a bit long.

Another great spot to relax is the 4,000 Islands, and it’s not far from Pakse, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary.

Finally, I *highly* recommend checking out Konglor Cave. Yeah, it’s a trek to get there, but it’s absolutely spectacular.

Happy to chat more! 🙂

Safe travels with your planning, Fab
