What to see in Puglia in 5 days around Bari?

Hi everyone,

For the May public holidays, we’ve planned a 5-day trip to Puglia (which feels a bit short, but we couldn’t do otherwise—work commitments!).

We’ll be staying in Bari and plan to explore the surrounding villages on day trips or half-day trips. We’re struggling to decide which ones to visit.

What do you think is doable/reasonable in 5 days? Are some places more worth it than others?

Off the top of our heads, we were considering: Lecce, Ostuni, Alberobello, Brindisi, Matera, and Polignano a Mare... I think we won’t be able to do it all, so we’re thinking of cutting some destinations—but which ones?

Thanks in advance! Tyflore

Hi, - From a single base in BARI, you can skip Matera—it’s a bit far (1-hour drive) and really needs 2 days there! Same for Lecce, which is 1h45 away and deserves at least a day and a half on-site...

- Brindisi isn’t really worth it...

- 5 days—is that *on-site* time, or does it include two half-days for flights? And what are your dates (weekend, holidays, etc.)?

For choosing villages!!! There are 27 on my blog—READ HERE:

Hi there,

Alberobello, the postcard-perfect town of trulli, is one I’d avoid unless you love the vibe of Rocamadour or Les Baux-de-Provence... Lecce is a bit far and deserves more than just a quick visit. Are you renting a car? One day in Trani and Castel del Monte. One day in Ostuni and Martina Franca. Maybe an excursion to Monopoli. The rest in Bari.

Thanks for your replies—they’ve really helped me get a clearer picture!

Even though we know every city deserves at least two days to soak it all in, it seems a bit extreme to rule them out just for that reason. Because if we go by that logic, we’d end up visiting almost none of them if we *have* to stay longer everywhere.

After all, for example, you clearly can’t see all of Paris in a week (and yet some people only go for 3 days). I don’t know if my analogy makes sense, but we can’t always skip seeing something just because it’ll be too short...

When I say 5 days, I obviously mean *on location*...

We’re not put off by 1h45 trips, especially since we’ll be staying near the central station—we’ve done day trips to certain spots before. Leaving at a reasonable time (like an 8 AM train) means we can arrive early enough to make the most of the day, I think. I just checked, and the Bari-Lecce service is regular, with a direct train every hour (the Trenitalia Bari-Lecce).

My question is more about the cultural/aesthetic appeal of the places I mentioned. Do some of them seem less *must-see* than others from that perspective?

@UnaMilanese: When you mention the vibe in Rocamadour and Les Baux-de-Provence, what exactly are you referring to?

When you mention the atmosphere in La Rocamadour - Les Baux-de-Provence, what exactly do you mean?

Crowds of tourists and mediocre craft shops aimed at them everywhere.
