Which island to visit in Vietnam?

We’re heading to Vietnam for 3 weeks from January 17th to February 6th. In addition to the Mekong Delta and the central region, we’d like to spend some time by the sea. We’re torn between visiting the islands of Hon Son/Nam Du/(+Phu Quoc?) or choosing Con Dao Island. We’re hesitant because we’ve read that the sea around Con Dao can be rough and not great for swimming at this time of year (and that boats might be canceled). Could you share your thoughts? Thanks

Hi there, From experience, Con Dao is best avoided in January if you're looking for a beach holiday—there’s quite a bit of wind on the deserted beaches of Côn Son, though the other side is a bit more sheltered. That said, there aren’t many people around for walks, and accommodations often have promotions to attract guests. There are beautiful sights to see, not to mention the historical aspect of the prison, the market, etc... If you book a place with a pool, opt for one that’s sheltered from the ocean winds rather than one with a sea view. Phu Quoc—you’ll either love it or not! Safe travels, Eric

Thanks for your reply! So, I think we’ll go for Hon Son/Nam Du/Phu Quoc. Have you been to these two small islands? Otherwise, do you know the Phu Yen/Song Cau region in the center? How’s the sea there, and what’s the weather like in early February? Have a great evening! Christine

Hi,

We went to Con Dao at the beginning of February during Tet. I don’t remember there being much wind. It’s a really nice island without too many people, but the beaches weren’t always very clean. We enjoyed it, but with Tet, it was hard to find an open shop to grab a bite.

Hi Christine,

For beach destinations, Vietnam isn’t my top pick. I was drawn to Con Dao more for its historical side, and Phu Quoc because I was in Chau Doc and Ha Tien and wanted to form my own opinion. In central Vietnam, I spent 2 days in Quy Nhon on my way back from the Central Highlands, then 2 days in Nha Trang as a stopover before celebrating Tet in Saigon (HCMC). Quy Nhon is a nice city, buzzing with Tet preparations—that appealed to me more than the beach. The weather in the central region was great, with calm seas. Nha Trang has a beautiful beach, but I preferred the countryside. I’m not the best person to advise on beach destinations, but I can share insights on the weather in the areas I mentioned. Have a great trip! Eric
