Hi there,

I arrived in Taoyuan, just outside Taipei, yesterday, and I can’t withdraw money from ATMs with my cards.

Do you know which bank I should try to get my banking transactions done?

I feel so helpless in a foreign country with a language I don’t understand.

Thanks, I’m really looking forward to your reply!

Hello,

I arrived yesterday in Taoyuan, in the suburbs of Taipei, and I can't withdraw money with my cards at ATMs.

Do you know which bank I could go to that would allow me to make my transactions?

I feel helpless, in an unfamiliar country with an unfamiliar language.

Thanks, I’m eagerly waiting for your reply!

Hi,

I’m not sure how Canadian banks work, but your issue makes me think it might be a block from your bank because you didn’t inform them you were traveling to Taiwan (so they suspect fraudulent use). Try contacting them to check. This same thing happened to me in Germany (and yet, it’s not exactly an exotic country for a French person!); now, my banker knows all about my travel plans.

Hi there,

I’ve had similar issues in Taiwan before. The withdrawals that always worked for me were the ones I made at the Bank of Taiwan. Hope this helps you too!

Thanks so much for your reply. I contacted my Canadian bank, and the issue comes from the number of digits used for the PIN (NIP), which isn’t the same in every country. I’ll need to find another alternative.

On top of that, Taiwanese banks confirmed that I can only use ATMs, unlike in Thailand, where you can make withdrawals without a PIN directly at the branch.

Too late for you, but it might still help others—I’ve always used the ATMs in 7/11s because they’re super common and you’ll find them everywhere. The instructions switch to English once you insert your card into the machine.

Hi Michel, 7/11 ATMs charge huge fees—watch out!

Yeah, but I always withdrew the maximum possible. I preferred this option over ATMs outside bank opening hours because when you're sightseeing, the main goal isn't to find an open bank. I only had two cards with me—a debit and a credit one—and I didn’t want to "lose" one if there was an issue. I found the 7-Eleven option much easier.

Are you still in Taiwan or have you left already?

A card with no fees might mean cash... Not an option in Taiwan.

I was there a few years ago. A really beautiful trip. A month.

We just got back from Taiwan (spent a month there in November/December 2025) and withdrew money from ATMs at Taiwan Cooperation Bank with no fees. The max was 20,000 NTD. When we tried at a 7/11, the fee was pretty steep, so we canceled the withdrawal
