Hi everyone, we’re thinking of heading to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, in early July 2025, but a few people have warned us against it because of the sargassum. Is it really that bad?

Hello everyone, we’d like to go to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, in early July 2025, but several people are advising against it because of the sargassum. Is it really that bad?

Hi there, it’s kind of a lottery depending on the arrival of the seaweed. Some days there’s a lot, and other days there’s less. Big hotels and some beaches, like in Playa, have systems in the water to limit the amount of algae washing up. They’re removed every day by workers on certain hotel beaches. Out of three July trips to the Playa del Carmen area, we had sargassum twice and nothing at all once. We’d still recommend going—this part of Mexico is amazing.

It’s really hit-or-miss as a phenomenon. You’ll want to check ahead before you go. There are always areas that are less affected than others.

This site has the link to the real-time sargassum map.
Il faut bien revenir pour repartir!

Hi there,

I just looked into this... and it's completely unpredictable, especially if you're planning to go in July. I came across some useful information about sargassum that might help. It seems you can still swim despite its presence, but I’d advise checking things out thoroughly beforehand. The ecology and environment department usually publishes weekly updates on this phenomenon, but unfortunately, the site is in Spanish and the link seems to be down. So, it’s best to stay as informed as possible—maybe by checking with local tourist offices for the latest updates. Fingers crossed it doesn’t mess up your plans! 🤞

There’s no rule to it, and people often exaggerate. This year there’s none, even though there should be. And when there is some, it’s not everywhere... Anyway, since there are fewer tourists, there’s a lot less of it (since COVID).

Hi there. I’m planning a trip to Mexico in 2026. Do you think Mexico has become less touristy since Covid? I’ve looked into the sargassum situation, and it seems like it’s localized to certain beaches, but you can avoid it if you move a little further away, right?
